Shri Vasishtha said: Indeed, the perception of 'I am not' yields good and bad results; it is the fruit of worldly existence and certainly pacifies desires.

anahaṃvedanābhyāsātsamaloṣṭāśmakāñcanaḥ | bhūtvā śāntabhavāpīḍo na naraḥ paritāmyati || 2 ||

By the practice of the perception of 'I am not', becoming indifferent to gold, stone, and dirt, a person does not suffer from worldly troubles.

ahaṃtāpuṭakoḍḍīnaparabodhabalēritaḥ | ahamityarthapāṣāṇo na jānē kvāśu gacchati || 3 ||

Driven by the power of others' knowledge, enclosed in the ego-shell, one becomes like a stone in the meaning of 'I', and does not know where to go.

Enclosed in the ego-shell, driven by the power of Brahma's heroism, one becomes like a stone in the meaning of 'I', and does not know where to go.

ahaṃtāpuṭakoḍḍīno brahmavīrabalēritaḥ | śarīrayantrapāṣāṇo na jānē kvāśu gacchati || 5 ||

Enclosed in the ego-shell, driven by the power of Brahma's heroism, one becomes like a stone in the bodily machine, and does not know where to go.

ahamarthahimaṃ tvantaranahantā cidarciṣā | uḍḍīyeva vilīnaṃ sanna jāne kvāśu gacchati || 6 ||

I do not know where the essence of 'I', which has merged into the inner self through the light of consciousness, goes instantly.

ahaṃraso vilīnontaranahantācidarciṣā | śarīraparṇādudvarṇānna jāne kvāśu gacchati || 7 ||

I do not know where the essence of 'I', which has merged into the inner self through the light of consciousness, goes instantly from the body.

87.17.8

śarīraparṇānniṣpītastvahaṃbhāvarasāsavaḥ | anahantārkamārgeṇa paratāmadhigacchati || 8 ||

The essence of 'I', which has been extracted from the body, attains the ultimate state through the path of non-ego.

śayane kardame śaile gṛhe vyomni sthale jale | sthūlā sūkṣmā nirākārā rūpāntaragatāpi ca || 9 ||

Whether in sleep, mud, mountain, home, sky, land, or water, it is gross, subtle, formless, and also in another form.

yatra tatra sthitā suptā prabuddhā bhasmatāṃ gatā | dhṛtā nītā nimagnā ca dūrasthā nikaṭā satī || 10 ||

Whether situated, asleep, awakened, turned to ashes, held, led, immersed, far away, or near, it remains.

śarīravata dhānāntaḥsthitāhaṃtvānavāṃkurā | śāstrājālaṃ tanotyāśu saṃsārākhyamidaṃ kṣaṇāt || 11 ||

The ego, which is like a seed within the body, quickly spreads the net of scriptures in this world known as samsara in an instant.

ahaṃtvavata dhānāntaḥsthitadehabṛhaddrumaḥ | saṃsāraśākhānivahaṃ yatra tatra tanotyalam || 12 ||

The ego, like a large tree within the body, spreads its branches of worldly entanglements everywhere.

śākhāśateddhadalapuṣpaphaladrumo'sti bījodare nanu dṛśā paridṛśyate'sau | deho'styahaṃtvakaṇikāntaraśeṣadṛśyasaṃvitparīta iti buddhidṛśaiva dṛṣṭam || 13 ||

The tree with hundreds of branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits exists within the seed, and it is seen through vision. The body exists as the essence of the ego, seen through the intellect.

dehādahaṃtvamanavāptavato vicāraiścidvyomamātravapuṣo vapuṣo'tha voccaiḥ | nāhaṃtvabījajaṭharādasato'bhyudeti saṃsāravṛkṣa iha bodhamahāgnidagdhāt || 14 ||

For those who have not attained the ego from the body, through contemplation, the form of pure consciousness arises. The tree of worldly life does not sprout from the seed of ego, which is destroyed by the great fire of knowledge.
