Sri Vasishtha said: You who wear the half moon on your head, the great being who is the truth of consciousness has no end and only one form. How did duality come upon him?
And great god, how has this duality become so firmly fixed and so full of shifting forms that it wounds us with suffering, a thing that only wisdom can drive away?
Ishvara said: That Brahman holds every power. When it exists as the one reality, then this rising of the parts called duality and oneness has no root at all.
sati dvitve kilaikaṃ syātsatyekatve dvirūpatā | kale dve api cidrūpe cidrūpatvāttadapyasat || 4 ||
If there is duality, then there must also be oneness. If there is oneness, then there must also be twoness. But both of these are only forms of consciousness, and because they are only consciousness, this duality and this oneness are both unreal.
ekābhāvādabhāvo'tra ekatvadvitvayordvayoḥ | ekaṃ vinā na dvitīyaṃ na dvitīyaṃ vinaikatā || 5 ||
If oneness itself were absent, then both oneness and duality would be absent. Without the one there is no second, and without the second there is no oneness.
Because cause and effect share the very same essence, they are really one. Even from the seed to the fruit, this idea of change is only something imagined.
Being the knower and being the known shine by themselves, without any real difference, both made only of consciousness. Whatever change seems to happen is within that very consciousness, and because it shares its essence, it is not different from it.
This idea of change rises out of consciousness, and once it falls upon things, it gets its meaning only through the many relations of cause and effect.
The waves in water and the waves in a mountain's water are the same. And one to whom a horn sprouting on a hare seems real is himself like a hare's horn.
Here it is the direct knowledge of the thing itself that settles this, enough with clever words about it. Cutting things apart into this and that cannot really be done through words alone, brahmin.
Brahman holding every power is, in truth, no different from Brahman itself, just as a wave, a drop, a swell and a flood of water are nothing but water.
Just as the flower, the young shoot and the leaf of a vine are nothing other than the vine, so duality, oneness, the being of the world, and the being of you and I are nothing other than consciousness.
And the powers called place, time, action, existence and law are, in their own nature, nothing but consciousness. They arise by themselves out of the very being of consciousness.
The truth of consciousness, consciousness, the known, I, Brahman, these are only different names given to the one thing, just as a ripple of water is called by different names like wave, while remaining water.
For the vast ocean that is consciousness at play, a wave is not really possible at all. Whatever looks like waviness in it is only the name we give to the known, nothing more.
Whatever is seen here, the fruit, the shoot, the flower and the rest, belongs to that vast vine which is consciousness itself, and none of it is different, because it is all made of that same consciousness.
Consciousness, led on by great ignorance, while still remaining itself, comes to bear a name. Then, as a living soul, it sees an outside world, seeing double, like someone seeing two moons where there is only one.
By its own nature it imagines, I myself am someone else, and so it seems to become another, an otherness that is nothing but its own imagining, made by itself.
With a form that has no stain at all, it comes to carry what looks like a stained form, and having entered the river of this world, it still knows only through consciousness itself.
The form that is consciousness itself, through this very process, comes to become one with being a living soul. It is by the shining of the truth of consciousness that the living soul lives at all, being made entirely of it.
That matter, once the living being takes it in, quickly turns into vital strength. Then it knows, as its own direct experience, I have become a being with life breath.
Through the sequence that begins with 'I am', quickly, out of the confusion of experiencing the five elements, it comes to know everything that stands still and everything that moves — and it becomes exactly that thing it knows.
kākatālīyayogena dṛḍhābhyāsakṣayeṇa ca | vāsanāntarasaṃśleṣātsūkṣmamākāramujjhati || 27 ||
By sheer coincidence — as when a crow lands on a branch just as a palm fruit happens to fall — and by the wearing away of a fixed habit, when it joins with another set of impressions, it gives up its subtle form.
By its own sense of being two, twoness arises in what is really only the one — bright and vivid, like a ghost that appears simply because a man imagines a ghost.
advitvavedanādvitvamātmano'pi nivartate | na karomīti saṃkalpātpuruṣasyeva kartṛtā || 29 ||
By knowing non-duality, the self's duality too comes to an end — just as a man's sense of being the doer ends the moment he thinks, 'I am not doing this.'
Because the self is the highest self, duality truly does not exist in it — it is changeless through and through, it fills all things, and this is so always.
tathā saṃkalpane kleśo na saṃkalpavināśane | saṃkalpayakṣo gandharvapuryāḥ sṛṣṭau na tu kṣaye || 33 ||
In the same way, the pain is in forming the thought, not in ending the thought — the spirit that builds the city in the sky works only in its making, not in its unmaking.
This suffering has come only because a thought was fed and made strong; it ends the moment there is simply no thought at all — so what difficulty can there be in that?
Use the winds of your own good sense to blow away the cloud of thought, and come to the highest clearness — like the sky in autumn, free of every cloud.
Rest on the pure awareness within you, and watch — see how it is tossed by the wind of thought, drifting through this world like a scrap of leaf or straw.
The self holds every power; whatever it fully imagines, in whatever way, it then sees exactly that, in that way — it is only its own thought spreading out.
saṃkalpavātavalitaṃ janmajālakadambakam | asaṃkalpānilasparśād viśrāmyati pare pade || 43 ||
The whole tangled net of rebirth, twisted about by the wind of thought, comes to rest in the highest state the moment it is touched by the breeze of no-thought.
For him, O Brahmin, once the present memory has arisen, the earlier one does not remain — just as, the moment autumn comes, it clears away the murkiness the rains had brought.
ghanapravahaya'kasmaccittheha saiva vardhate | ya evoccaissvarastantryah sa evakramati srutim || 48 ||
Suddenly, in a dense flood, that very craving of the mind grows stronger — just as, among the strings of a lute, it is the loudest note that fills the ear.
So, since this reality cannot arise in any other way, it shines forth free of all desire — that very being is the highest state, the one supreme God. In every act of worship it appears as the worshiper, the worship itself, and the one worshipped; it is something, and yet as if nothing at all — it alone is the single form that is the very ground of the mind.
