Sri Ishvara said: The universe stands exactly like this. It is both the existing and the non-existing, and it also wears the form of the divine. It is free from the very idea of twoness and oneness, and for that same reason it rightly holds both twoness and oneness too.
The blemish and the distorted shape of consciousness -- that is what has become this world. But consciousness itself, without blemish and without this world, is whole, undivided, and one without a second.
Consciousness becomes bound when it takes on the stain of thinking, 'I am this.' But when it recognizes this very state as its own, not different from itself, it becomes free.
When consciousness takes on the shape of an object and so becomes two, it gives up its true being. It takes on a nature mixed with pleasure and other such things, and holds an existence that is not real -- an 'it exists' that lasts only a moment.
Pure, without parts, whether called real or unreal or anything else like that, and free from every name, every word, and every meaning those words carry -- it is like the sky, even though it is the very self of everything.
All this is beyond compare and at peace; the mind moves through it along three paths. This same reality, called Brahman, though it grows and expands, remains Brahman, through the power that unfolds as the sky.
When the mind is cut off by the mind itself, within the self that is made only of one's own sense organs, and, through the true light, the net of the world lies hidden and reaches its dissolution,
then the existence of the individual soul -- known by that very name -- which is the crumbling shape given to the world, made only of imagination, and like a roasted seed, is cut away.
It is called 'the seeing.' Having grasped this, it gives up its endless chewing over of things to be known, and, freed from the cloud of the mind's delusion, becomes like the clear expanse of the autumn sky.
Pure, resting only in the state of being consciousness, it has left behind the restlessness of things that are known and things that are unconscious. Having become common to all, it crosses over the ocean of becoming.
Grown full with the mastery of that dreamless sleep from which there is no birth again, it reaches the highest and comes to rest -- truly at rest, in that vast, open state.
This is the first state, told to you, that comes when the mind is worn away. Now hear the second, O best of the brahmins -- the most purifying state of this same power.
This same power of consciousness, once freed from the mind, is full of peace. It is the light of everything, free from all darkness, and beautiful like the wide open sky.
It is like the trace of deep sleep, like a formation held inside a rock, like the taste held inside a grain of rock-salt, like the power of vibration inside the wind.
It surely gives up its turning toward the world of things to be known -- just as water gives up its restlessness, just as a trace of wind gives up its motion, just as a trace of a flower gives up its fragrance.
It has given up being time and being space. It is whole everywhere, yet it has no parts. It is neither dull nor not dull. Vast, it holds an existence that has no name.
That existence has reached the state of great being, one that space, time and everything else cannot break into parts. It holds within it something of the state beyond the fourth state. It is without stain and without any affliction.
It is a certain something, O wide-eyed one, standing there like a witness. Everywhere, always, it is given over to the sweet taste of the light of all things.
Because the seer and the seen have both come to rest, this state is beyond name and meaning. Going beyond what words like 'the absolute' and 'the self' mean, it rises alone, on its own.
By its own steadiness, it rests untouched by time, without stain, as the highest self. And even though it is called by names such as 'the state beyond the fourth state,' it reaches the highest state.
Resting long in this foundation, it has gone far beyond every path and everyone who walks a path. That, dear one, does not come within the reach of even my own words.
etanmayamidaṃ viśvaṃ mune tanmayavedanāt| satyasaṃvedanānnedaṃ na ca nedaṃ munīśvara || 26 ||
This universe, sage, is made of that very thing, since it is felt to be made of that. Seen with true understanding, it is neither 'this' nor 'not this,' lord of sages.
Because it is one, with nothing else beside it, because it is never shaken, because it is thick with consciousness, and because it is changeless and more besides, it goes on, for a long time, as both everlasting and not everlasting.
ciddhanatvācchiśuśilākośānāṃ jagatāmapi| manāgapi na bhedo'sti satāmapyasatāmapi || 29 ||
Because consciousness is one dense whole, there is not the slightest difference between worlds — whether they are like a child, a stone, or a husk — nor between what is real and what is unreal.

Sri Valmiki said: Having said this, the Lord — whose sight is without stain — passed, through that same change, into this highest state called 'the fully quieted sound.' There he stood silent for a moment, his mind at rest, together with that sage.
