Ishvara said: Believing 'I am sorrowful,' consciousness in this way creates only something unreal - it has fallen into a delusion like the drunkenness of a dream, into sheer confusion.
Just as a young bride who is not dead at all gets it backward and thinks, 'I am dead,' and weeps, though she is not ruined in the least, thinking 'I am ruined' - consciousness does the very same thing.
For no real reason, a bewildered mind sees even something perfectly steady as if it were reeling, the way it sees this whole world. In the same way, through the delusion of 'I,' consciousness sees wrongly too.
cittaṃ hi kāraṇam tvasyāḥ saṃsārānubhave citeḥ | na ca tatkāraṇam kiṃciccittvānyatvātyasambhavāt || 4 ||
The mind is indeed said to be the cause of consciousness's experience of the world. But it is not really any cause at all, because it is utterly impossible for the mind to be anything separate from consciousness.
So indeed, since there is no such cause, the thing perceived is itself impossible - that is what is meant. That thing, then, is not the mind; it is only the perceived object, which consciousness perceives by its own effort.
na dṛśyadarśanadraṣṭrarūpaṃ tailamivopale | na kartṛkarma-karaṇaṃ dṛśīndāviva kṛṣṇatā || 6 ||
Consciousness has no seer, no seeing and no thing seen within it - just as no oil is hidden inside a stone. It has no one who acts, nothing acted upon, and no tool for acting within it - just as no blackness is hidden inside the shining moon.
na mātṛmeyamānāni nabhasīva navāṅkuraḥ | na cic-cetana-cetyādi nandane khadiro yathā || 7 ||
It has no knower, no known thing and no act of knowing in it, just as no new sprout grows in the sky. It has no consciousness, a conscious being and an object of consciousness in it, just as no khadira tree grows in Nandana, the heavenly garden.
It has no 'I,' no 'you,' no 'that' and so on in it, just as there is no mountain in the sky. It has no 'this is my body' and 'that is another's body' in it, just as there is no whiteness of a conch shell in black soot.
nānā'nānā na cāpyantaraṇāviva sumeravaḥ | na ca śabdārthaśabdaśrīrmahoṣaralatā yathā || 9 ||
It is not many things, and it is not one thing that is 'not-many' either - it is not like many Sumeru mountains packed into a single atom. And the beauty of words together with their meanings does not touch it, any more than a vine grows in a barren, salty field.
neti neti na caivārkamaṇḍale rajanī yathā | na vastutāvastute ca tuṣāre tu yathoṣṇatā || 10 ||
Of it one can only say, 'not this, not this' - just as there is no night inside the disc of the sun. It is neither a real thing nor an unreal thing, just as there is no warmth in frost.
It is not emptiness, and it is not the absence of emptiness either - as impossible as a tree growing inside solid rock. In fact, even calling it 'emptiness-and-non-emptiness' would be too grand a claim - as absurd as a great hole dug into the sky.
This whole trouble stands there, produced only by the habit of imagining everything as real. For one who knows the truth, the trouble dies down the moment that imagining stops.
tajjñe'pyabhāvanāmātrādṛte'nyatro'payujyate | na tṛṇaṃ na ca trailokyamiti svāyattatātra yā || 14 ||
For the one who knows this, nothing else works except simply not imagining it - not the smallest blade of grass, not the three whole worlds. Such is how completely this matter rests in one's own hands.
This matter rests entirely in one's own hands, yet it is hard to achieve because it is rooted in old habits of imagining. Whatever a person does not work to achieve - how, and from where, could that ever be gained?
This consciousness has no mental constructs and no second beside it; it reaches everywhere. It is supreme, one, beyond all else, perfectly clear - the very lamp that lights up every light.
This same consciousness is what lights up everything. It reaches everywhere, and it is always pure. It is always shining and never sets, it has no mind of its own, it never changes, and it is never stained.
It is present in a pot, in cloth, in a banyan tree, in a wall, in a cart, in a monkey, in a donkey, in a demon, in the ocean, in every creature, in a man, and in a serpent.
sākṣivattiṣṭhati satī spandate na ca kutracit | dīpaḥ prakāśanāyeva karoti na punaḥ kriyām || 19 ||
While present everywhere, it just stands there like a witness - it never stirs anywhere at all. Like a lamp that exists only to give light, it performs no other action.
malināpyamunaiṣā sā'vikalpāḍhyā vikalpinī | jaḍevāpyajaḍābhāsā na sarvā sarvagaiva ca || 20 ||
Though it may seem stained by all this, this consciousness - which is truly full of freedom from thought - appears full of thoughts. Though it seems lifeless, it has the appearance of the living. It is not everything, yet it reaches everywhere.
Free of mental constructs, supreme and subtle, consciousness perceives its own self-awareness - the way a breath, whether moving or still, reaches the limbs and vital points inside, within the wrappings of a machine.
Consciousness, caught up in shape, sight and thought, turns - through both not-knowing and knowing - into what we call sleep, since sleep itself is both real and unreal.
That same supreme, perfectly clear consciousness comes to feel worry, simply through the activity of thinking - just as a good man turns into a bad one once wicked desires take root in him.
Just as a mirror, once the disturbance in it settles, comes to hold a steady reflection, so too consciousness, having entered creation as if it were many things, returns through awakening to its own self, to that highest state.
abhāvavedanādasyaḥ saṃsāraḥ saṃpravartate | svabhāvavedanādeṣa tv asadevopaśāmyati || 26 ||
Because consciousness fails to recognize its own true state, the round of the world arises. When it recognizes its own true nature, this round of the world, which was never real to begin with, comes to rest.
When, having become mind, consciousness conceives an inner difference that isn't really there, then, taking on a sense of 'I,' it seems to perish, though it can never actually die.
Just as, from the slightest shake, the fruit of a tree at the edge of a cliff falls all the way down, so this fall of consciousness seems like a great fall, though it began with only a slight stir.
rūpādīnāṃ tu sattaiṣā cit evāmalai va cit | dvitvaikatve tvabodhotthe bodhena vilayaṃ gate || 29 ||
The reality that form and the rest have is just this same consciousness, the one stainless consciousness. Duality and oneness both arise from not knowing; when knowledge comes, they dissolve.
By the mere presence of the mind, awareness arises in the mind, the senses, and the rest, just as by the mere presence of light, work becomes possible in actions.
From the breath, the pupil trembles; its shine is what we call sight. But when that sight turns toward what is outside, the awareness of the shape it shows is the higher consciousness.
Skin and breath, by themselves, are both lifeless and empty things; their contact is what we call touch. Thinking about it is the awareness of touch, but the awareness of that awareness is the higher consciousness.
The joining of the subtle element of smell with the breath gives the awareness of smell. But feeling these without any mind at all is nothing but the supreme consciousness.
From the joining of the subtle element of sound, hearing, and breath, when there is no mind, the awareness that remains, like the awareness of deep sleep, is called the supreme consciousness.
Being ready to act comes from intention, and intention is the process of thinking. Thinking is what clouds the mind; the self, free of it, is pure consciousness.
Consciousness, whose very nature is light, eternal, resting only in itself, holds this inner world as a structure within it, the way a rock holds a structure within it.
Through thought, it takes on the state of a living being, though by its own true nature it is free of thought. It is consciousness appearing as inert matter, yet not inert by nature, bringing about that inert state while all along resting in itself.
The chariot of this consciousness is the individual soul; the chariot of the individual soul is the sense of I; the chariot of the sense of I is the intellect; and the chariot of the intellect is the mind.
The chariot of the mind is the breath; the chariot of the breath is the group of senses. The chariot of the group of senses is the body; the chariot of the body is the chariot.
Like a stone let loose from a sling that goes where it is thrown, and otherwise just falls away: where there is a flower, there is fragrance; where there is fire, there is heat.
Where the breath-wind goes, and where the moon is, there is its glow. Awareness comes from the trembling of the breath; it is felt as a touch in the body's channels.
The spreading-out of awareness is the mind; the mind sits in the hollow of that breath. Awareness exists everywhere, clear like open sky, in both the lifeless and the living.
It seems to stir, and is felt that way because of the trembling of the breath. But in its nature as mere existence, it is present just the same in lifeless things.
prāṇasaṃbodhitā vetti vedaṃātmatayā jaḍe | nānāsphārasamullāsairyaḥ pūrvaṃ parivalgati | prāṇe'tīte tvamananaḥ sa evāśu na vepati || 53 ||
Stirred awake by the breath, awareness knows through the nature of feeling, even in a lifeless body. What used to leap about before, bursting out in all its many thrills, stops trembling at once, without a thought, once the breath is gone.
puryaṣṭake cittaparamā sve mune pratibimbiti | ādarśa eva pratimā dṛśyate nopalādiṣu || 54 ||
O sage, the supreme consciousness reflects itself in its own eightfold body, the way a reflection is seen only in a mirror, not in a stone or such things.
Know the mind as this eightfold body, the one single cause behind everything that happens. Others speak of it under different names, each shaped by their own way of thinking.
yasmādudeti kalanākuladṛśyajālaṃ yattatra ca sthitavadityanubhūtamuccaiḥ | yasmānmano viparivartati dehadṛṣṭyā sarvaṃ tu tatparamavastviti viddhi viśvam || 56 ||
Know that the whole universe -- the tangled net of visible things that rises from it, thick with imagination and strongly felt as though it truly stood there, and the mind that turns and moves through it by way of the body's sight -- all of this is that supreme reality.
