16.30.1

īśvara uvāca | evaṃ sarvamidaṃ viśvaṃ paramātmaiva kevalam | brahmaiva paramākāśameṣa devaḥ paraḥ smṛtaḥ || 1 ||

Ishvara said: In this way, this whole universe is nothing but the one supreme self. Brahman alone is the highest space; this god is known as the supreme one.

tadetatpūjanaṃ śreyastasmātsarvamavāpyate | tadeva sargabhūḥ sarvamidaṃ tasminvyavasthitam || 2 ||

Worshipping this alone is the highest good; from it everything is gained. That alone is the source of creation; all this rests in it.

akṛtrimamanādyantamadvitīyamakhaṇḍitam | avahiḥsādhanāsādhyam sukhaṃ tasmādavāpyate || 3 ||

It has no beginning and no end, it was never made, it has no second, and it is not broken into parts. The happiness that no outside means can bring is gained only from it.

prabuddhastvaṃ muniśreṣṭha tenedaṃ tava kathyatenātidevārcane yogyaḥ puṣpadhūpacayo mahān || 4 ||

You are awake, best of sages, and that is why this is being told to you. A great heap of flowers and incense is not fit for the worship of the supreme god.

avyutpannadhiyo ye hi bālape lavacetasaḥ | kṛtrimārcāmayaṃ teṣāṃ devārcanamudāhṛtam || 5 ||

For those whose understanding is not yet grown, whose minds are childish and weak, the worship of god is said to be made of artificial rites.

śamabodhādyabhāve hi puṣpādyairvārcayanti hi | mithyaiva kalpitairevamākāre kalpitātmake || 6 ||

When there is no peace and no understanding, people worship with flowers and such things, merely with imagined offerings, before a form that is itself imagined.

svasaṅkalpakṛtaiḥ kṛtvā kramairarcanaṃādṛtāḥ | bālāḥ saṃtoṣamāyānti puṣpadhūpalavārcanaiḥ || 7 ||

Performing worship step by step with rites made up by their own imagination, the childish find contentment through worship with a little flower and incense.

svasaṅkalpakṛtairarthaiḥ kṛtvā devārcanaṃ mudhā | yataḥ kutaścinmihyātma phalamātraṃ nayanti te || 8 ||

Having done the worship of god uselessly, with things made up by their own imagination, they gain, from wherever it comes, only a false result.

puṣpadhūpārcanaṃ brahman kalpitaṃ bālabuddhiṣu | yatsyādbhavādṛśāṃ yogyamarcanaṃ tadvadāmyaham || 9 ||

Worship with flowers and incense, Brahmin, is made for childish minds. Now I will tell you the worship that is fit for one such as you.

asmadādistvasau kaściddevo matimatāṃ vara | devastribhuvanādhāraḥ paramātmaiva netarat || 10 ||

But one such as myself is only some sort of god, best among the wise. The god who is the support of the three worlds is the supreme self alone, and nothing else.

śivaḥ sarvapadātītaḥ sarvasaṅkalpanātigaḥ | sarvasaṅkalpavalito na sarvo na ca sarvakaḥ || 11 ||

Shiva is beyond every condition, beyond every thought a mind can form, and yet he is wrapped in every thought a mind can form. He is not everything put together, and he is not each separate thing either.

dikkālādyanavacchinnaḥ sarvārambhaprakāśakṛt | cinmātramūrtiramalo deva ityucyate mune || 12 ||

He is not bound by place or time or anything like them. He lights up every act as it begins. His only form is pure awareness, and he is without a stain. Sage, this is what is called god.

saṃvitsarvakalātītā sarvabhāvāntarasthitā | sarvasattāpradā devī sarvasattāpahāriṇī || 13 ||

Awareness, the goddess, is beyond every division and lives inside everything that exists. She gives existence to everything, and she also takes existence away from everything.

brahma brahmansadasator madhyaṃ taddeva ucyate | paramātmparābhikhyam tatsadomityudāhṛtam || 14 ||

Brahman, Brahmin, is what stands between being and non-being; that is what is called god. It is known by the highest name, the supreme self, and it is also called being and Om.

mahāsattāsvabhāvena sarvatra samatāṃ gatam | mahācidi ti saṃproktaṃ paramārtha iti śrutam || 15 ||

Through the nature of vast being, it has become the same everywhere. It is called the great awareness, and it is known as the highest truth.

sthitaṃ sarvatra sarvaṃ tu latāsvantaryathā rasaḥ| sattāsāmānyarūpeṇa mahāsattātmanāpi ca || 16 ||

It stays everywhere, in everything, the way sap stays inside a vine, present both as ordinary being and as vast being.

yaccittattvamarundhatyā yaccittattvaṃ tavānagha| yaccittattvaṃ ca pārvatyā yaccittattvaṃ gaṇeṣu ca || 17 ||

The awareness that is in Arundhati, the awareness that is in you, sinless one, the awareness that is in Parvati, and the awareness that is in the ganas.

cittattvaṃ yanmamedaṃ ca cittattvaṃ yajjagatraye| taddeva iti tattvajñā viduruttamabuddhayaḥ || 18 ||

And the awareness that is in me, and the awareness that is in the three worlds. Those who know the truth, those of the finest understanding, know this as god.

pādapāṇyādimānanyo yo vā devaḥ prakalpyate| saṃvinmātrādṛte brahmannkiṃsāraḥ kila kathyatām || 19 ||

Brahmin, tell me what essence any other imagined god would have, one with hands and feet and so on, apart from pure awareness.

cinmātrameva saṃsārasāraḥ sakalasāratām| gataḥ sa devaḥ sarvo'haṃ tasmātsarvamavāpyate || 20 ||

Pure awareness alone is the essence of this world, and it has become the essence of everything. That god is everything, and I am that everything. From it, everything is gained.

He is not far away, Brahmin, and for no one is he hard to reach. He always stays in the body, and the same way, everywhere, in space too.

sa karoti sa cāśnāti sa bibharti prayāti ca | saniḥśvasiti saṃvettāso'ṅgānyaṅgāni vetti ca || 22 ||

He acts, and he eats; he sustains, and he moves; he breathes; he is the one who knows, and he knows every limb, one by one.

so'syāṃ vicitracēṣṭāyāṃ prakāśinyāṃ ca tadvāśāt | tatsvarūpanibaddhāyāṃ puryāmāste munīśvara || 23 ||

In this strange, restless city, which shines by his own power and is made of his own true nature, he lives, lord of sages.

śarīrāvasathāyāṃ ca calāyāṃ tatprasādataḥ | so'syāṃ gahanakośāyāṃ hradguhāyāṃ guheśvaraḥ || 24 ||

In this moving house that is the body, which moves by his own grace, he lives inside its deep covering, in the cave of the heart, the lord of that cave.

manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyācārasattātītāmalātmanaḥ | tasya saṃvyavahārārthaṃ saṃjñā ciditi kalpitā || 25 ||

He is beyond the working of the five senses and the mind, and his nature is pure. Just so people can talk about him in ordinary dealings, he has been given the name awareness.

He is made of awareness, subtle, present everywhere, and without a stain. He both makes this shining appearance and does not make it.

sā cidatyantavimalā jagadarthaṃ jagatkriyām | imāṃ rañjayati prājña raseneiva madhurlatām || 27 ||

That awareness, utterly pure, colors this purpose of the world and this working of the world, wise one, the way sap colors a sweet flowering vine.

cāravo ye camatkārāścitaściti yathāsthitam | camatkurvanti kila te tena kecinnabhobhidhāḥ || 28 ||

Whatever beautiful wonders shine out, staying just as they are within consciousness itself, truly amaze the eye; because of this, some of them are called by the name sky.

296.30.29

kecijjīvābhidhānāśca keciccittābhidhānakāḥ | kecitkalābhidhānāśca kecidddeśābhidhānakāḥ || 29 ||

Some are called by the name life, some are called mind, some are called a part, and some are called a place.

306.30.30

kecitkriyābhidhānāśca keciddravyābhidhānakāḥ | kecidbhāvavikārādijātyaucityābhidhānakāḥ || 30 ||

Some are called action, some are called a thing, and some are called by whatever name fits their kind, starting with a change of state.

316.30.31

prakāśābhidhānāḥ kecitkecicchailatamobhidhāḥ | arkendrādyabhidhāḥ kecitkecidyakṣābhidhānakāḥ || 31 ||

Some are called light, some are called mountain or darkness, some are called the sun, Indra, and so on, and some are called a yaksha.

niricchasvasvabhāvena vasantena yathāṅkuraḥ | tanyate tadvadeveyaṃ jagallakṣmīścidātmanā || 32 ||

Just as spring, through its own nature and without wanting anything, makes a sprout spread out, in the same way this glory of the world spreads out through the nature of consciousness.

cidevāsu samagrāsu sarvadaivekikaiva hi | trailokyāmbhodhisansthāsu śarīrajalajālikā || 33 ||

In all these bodies, a mass of water within the ocean of the three worlds, consciousness alone, always, is the one single reality.

śarīrapaṅkajabhrāntamanobhramarasaṃbhṛtām | āsvādayati saṃkalpamadhusattāṃ cidīśvarī || 34 ||

Consciousness, the queen, tastes the honey sweet being of imagination, a being filled with the mind, a bee wandering confused on the lotus of the body.

sasurāsuragandharvaṃ saśailārṇavakaṃ jagat | citi sthitaṃ pravahati jalāvarte jalaṃ yathā || 35 ||

The world, with its gods, demons, and gandharvas, its mountains and oceans, resting in consciousness, flows the way water flows in a whirlpool.

bandhacittamayācāracārucañcuracakrikam | saṃsāracakraṃ ciccakre bhrāmyati bhramabhājanam || 36 ||

The wheel of the world, a beautiful, swiftly turning wheel made from the conduct of the bound mind, a vessel of confusion, turns on the wheel of consciousness.

ciccaturbhujarūpeṇa jaghānāsuramaṇḍalam | kālo jaladakhaṇḍena sāyudhena yathā''tapam || 37 ||

Consciousness, in the form of the four armed one, struck down the whole host of demons, the way time, armed with a piece of cloud, strikes down the heat of the sun.

386.30.38

citrttrinetratayā brahmanvṛṣaśītāṃśucihnayā | gaurīkamalinīvakrapadmaṣaṭpadatāṃ gatā || 38 ||

Consciousness, taking the form of the three eyed one marked by the bull and the crescent moon, has become the bee on the curving lotus that is Gauri's lotus pond.

viṣṇoḥ padmālitāmetya ciddhyānādhīnamānasā | trayī nalinyāḥ sarasīṃ dhatte paitāmahīṃ sthitim || 39 ||

Consciousness, becoming the bee on Vishnu's lotus, its mind absorbed in meditation and carrying the three Vedas within it, takes on, in that same lotus pond, the position of Brahma the grandfather.

cito brahmanvicitrāṇi śarīrāṇīha bhūriśaḥ | patrāṇīva tarorhemni keyūrādikriyeva ca || 40 ||

O wise one, from consciousness come many kinds of wondrous bodies here in plenty, just as leaves come from a tree, and just as armlets and other ornaments are made from gold.

citsamastasurānīkaparivanditapādayā trailokyacūḍāmaṇitāṃ dhatte vāsavalīlayā || 41 ||

Consciousness, whose feet are worshipped by the whole army of gods, takes on, through Indra's play, the state of being the crown jewel of the three worlds.

citsubhāsvartāmetya trailokyodaraḍambare patatyudeti saṃyāti svātmanyevābdhivārivat || 42 ||

Consciousness, becoming radiant, seems to fall, rise, and pass away within the great display inside the three worlds, yet all this happens within itself alone, like the water of the ocean.

cicchandrikā caturdikṣu avabhāsaṃ vitanvatī vikāsayati niḥśeṣabhūtasattākumudvatīm || 43 ||

The moonlight of consciousness, spreading its glow in all four directions, makes the lily pond that is the existence of every single being bloom.

446.30.44

ciddarpaṇamahālakṣmīstrijagatpratibimbhitam gṛhṇātyanugraheṇāntaḥ svagarbhmiv garbhiṇī || 44 ||

The great glory that is the mirror of consciousness holds within itself, out of its own grace, the reflected image of the three worlds, the way a pregnant woman holds her own child in the womb.

456.30.45

The great glory that is the mirror of consciousness holds within itself, out of its own grace, the reflected image of the three worlds, the way a pregnant woman holds her own child in the womb.

vicitrālokakusumā ghanasaṃkalpapallavā | vyomakedārikārūḍhā sattaughaphalaśālinī || 46 ||

The creeper of consciousness has dazzling light for its flowers and dense thought for its young shoots; it has grown up on a plot of the sky, and it carries the abundance of all existence as its fruit.

It is coloured by the sap of desire that is the pollen mass of the web of living beings; it is wrapped in the bark of awareness; and it is thick with the buds that are the mind's cravings.

486.30.48

atītāsaṃkhyatrijagatkēsarōjjvalarūpiṇī | anārataspandamahāvilāsōllāsahāsinī || 48 ||

Its shape shines bright, with countless past worlds as its threads, and it laughs with the joy of its own great, ceaseless play of motion.

496.30.49

sarvartuparvaparuṣā jaḍaśailādigulmakā | vigrhagraṇthivalitā mūlāgraparivartitā || 49 ||

It has the joints of every season for its stem knots, and lifeless mountains and the like for its thickets; it is coiled round with the knots that are bodies, and it turns from its root to its tip.

cillateyaṃ vikasitā pelavaṃ sadasadvapuḥ | vicitraṃ dṛśyakusumaṃ parāmarśāsaḥaṃ bahu || 50 ||

This creeper of consciousness has blossomed: delicate, its body something that is and is not, a wondrous flower to see, and in many ways beyond all grasp.

anayeh hi sarvatra chChAyAchChamiva janyate | manyate tanyate vastu gIyate kriyate'pi cha || 51 ||

By this, indeed, everywhere here, like one shadow inside another, a thing is born, is thought about, is spread out, is spoken of, and is also made.

526.30.52

mahAchitAnayA nityaM bhAsante bhAskarAdayaH | dehAH svadante cha mithastatsachchijjDavibhramaiH || 52 ||

By this great consciousness, the sun and the rest shine forever, and bodies enjoy one another, through illusions that split it into being, awareness, and lifeless matter.

chitA chAvartavartinyA siddhAnyeva pranRtyati | jagajjAlarajolekhA tatsattA dRshyadehinI || 53 ||

Through consciousness dwelling in its own turning cycle, the trail of dust that is the web of the world, its being embodied as the visible, truly dances like a thing perfected.

546.30.54

chitsarvaM jagadArambhamimaM prakaTayatyalam | trailokyadIpakaSikhAdIpo varNAshrayaM yathA || 54 ||

Consciousness fully reveals this entire arising of the world, the way a lamp, the flame that lights the three worlds, reveals colours and shapes.

556.30.55

chichchandrabimbe vimale shashavatprApya saMgamam | sarvatra lakShyatAmeti padArthashrIrjagadgatA || 55 ||

Once the glory of things spread through the world joins itself to the pure moon-disc of consciousness, the way a hare's mark belongs to the moon, it becomes visible everywhere.

cidrasāyanasekena padārthapaṭalāvalī | rūpameti phalaṃ caiva prāvṛṭsiktēva sallatā || 56 ||

When the whole array of things is sprinkled with the elixir of consciousness, it takes on shape and bears fruit, like a healthy vine watered by the rains.

cicchāyayaiva sarvasya jāḍyaṃ samyagudeti ca | sarvasyāsya śarīrasya gṛhasyēva tamastvih || 57 ||

It is the shadow of consciousness that brings out the dullness in everything; dullness fills this whole body the way darkness fills a house.

ciccmatkṛtayo dēhē na bhavēyurimā yadi | trailōkyadēhāstyaktvaitē na spṛśēyuḥ kilākṛtim || 58 ||

If consciousness did not work its wonders in the body, then every body in the three worlds would lose everything and never take shape at all.

cidākāśaprakāśē'smin saṃkalpaśiśudhāriṇī | kriyākulavadhūrdēhagṛhē sphurati cañcalā || 59 ||

In this light of the open space of consciousness, action is like a restless young wife carrying her baby, which is intention: she flickers inside the house of the body.

cidālōkaṃ vinā kasya rasanāgrē sphurannapi | kathaṃ kadā prakaṭatāmēti dṛṣṭaḥ kvā vā rasāḥ || 60 ||

Without the light of consciousness, taste may flicker on the tip of the tongue, but how or when would anyone notice it there? Where has taste ever been experienced without that light?

śr̥ṇvaṅga svāṅgaśākho'pi kuntalālilato'pyalam | cinmajjanam vinā dehavṛkṣaḥ ka iva rājate || 61 ||

Listen, friend: the tree that is the body has its own limbs for branches and thick curling hair like climbing vines, but without being steeped in consciousness, what does this tree of a body look like?

vardhate viluṭhatyatti ciccarācarakāriṇī | cidevāstītarannāsti cinmātramidamutthitam || 62 ||

Consciousness grows, tumbles about, and eats; consciousness makes everything that moves and everything that stands still. Only consciousness exists, nothing else exists. All that has arisen here is consciousness alone.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktavāṃstadā tryakṣaḥ sudhāṃśusvacchayā girā | punaḥ pṛṣṭo mayā rāma sudhāṃśusvacchayā girā || 63 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: after the three-eyed Shiva had said this, in a voice clear as moonlight, I questioned him again, Rama, in a voice just as clear as moonlight.

yadi sarvagatā deva cidastyekā tadātmakaḥ | tadayaṃ cāvanisphāramayāndheva na cetati || 64 ||

If, my lord, there is one consciousness that goes everywhere, and this being is nothing but that consciousness, then why does it, like someone blind, fail to perceive even the vastness of the earth?

ayaṃ citvānpurā bhūtvā ciddhīnaḥ saṃprati sthitaḥ | itīyaṃ kalpanā loke pratyakṣānubhavā katham || 65 ||

People say: this one used to be conscious, and now stands without consciousness. How is such an idea in the world ever something we directly experience?

īśvara uvāca | śr̥ṇvetadakhilaṃ brahmanyadā pṛṣṭaṃ vadāmi te | mahānayaṃ tvayā praśnaḥ kṛto brahmavidāṃ vara || 66 ||

Ishvara said: listen to all of this, sage. I will answer what you have asked. This is a great question you have raised, greatest among those who know the highest truth.

cidasti hi śarīreha sarvabhūtamayātmikā | calonmukhātmikaikā tu nirvikalpā parā smṛtā || 67 ||

Consciousness does exist in the body: it takes on the nature of every being and inclines toward movement. But there is one consciousness, remembered as supreme, that never changes.

saṃkalpabuddhā saivāntaḥ svayamanayeva saṃsthitā | saṃkalpitetaravarā dauḥśīlyaṃ strī yathā gatā || 68 ||

That same consciousness, roused by thought, stands within as if it were someone else, the same excellent one turned into another through imagination, like a good woman fallen into bad conduct.

sa eva hi pumānkopādyathehānya iva kṣaṇāt | bhavatyevaṃ vikalpāṅkā cittasvarūpānyatāṃ gatā || 69 ||

Just as an angry man can turn, in a moment, into what seems like a different person, so consciousness, once marked by thought, turns into something other than its own true nature.

vikalpakalpitā brahmaṃścitsvarūpaparicyutā | jāḍyaṃ kramādbhāvayantī prayāti kalanāpadam || 70 ||

Sage, once consciousness is shaped by thought and falls away from its own true nature, it slowly grows dull and reaches the state where it acts and creates.

citsvayaṃ cetyatāmeti sākāśaparamāṇutām | śabdabījātmikāṃ paścādvātatanmātragāminī || 71 ||

Consciousness itself becomes an object: it turns into a tiny particle of space, carrying the seed of sound, and from there moves on to the subtle stuff of air.

deśakālavibhāgāntā tanmātrāvalitā kramāt | jīvo bhūtvā bhavatyāśu buddhiḥ paścādahaṃ manaḥ || 72 ||

Wrapped in the subtle elements one after another, ending in the division into space and time, it quickly turns into a living being: first the intellect, then the sense of I, then the mind.

manastvaṃ samupāyātā saṃsāramavalambate | caṇḍālo'smīti mananāccaṇḍālatvamiva dvijaḥ || 73 ||

Once it becomes mind, it clings to the world, the way a brahmin, merely by thinking I am an outcaste, takes on the state of an outcaste.

saṃkalpitā'prabodhena jāḍyā'viśvaprabodhinī | śabalaṃ rūpamāsādya saṃkalpādyātyanāratam || 74 ||

Shaped by this failure to awaken, grown dull, no longer rousing the world into wakefulness, it takes on a mixed, changing form, and moves on endlessly, driven by thought.

anantasaṃkalpamayī jāḍyasaṃkalpapīvarā | cijjāḍyānmōdamāyāti payaḥ pāṣāṇatāmiva || 75 ||

Consciousness, made entirely of endless thought and grown heavy with dull thinking, comes to find relish even in dullness, the way water can turn into stone.

tatashchittaṃ manomoho māyeti vihitābhidhā | jāḍyaṃ nipuṇamāśritya saṃsāre jāyate mune || 76 ||

Then it becomes thought, the mind's confusion, given the name illusion. Having settled completely into dullness, it is born into the round of worldly life, sage.

776.30.77

mohamāndyamupāyātā tṛṣṇānigaḍapīḍitā | kāmakrodhabhayopetā bhāvābhāvātipātinī || 77 ||

Grown sluggish with delusion, bound tight by the shackles of craving, gripped by desire, anger and fear, swinging endlessly between existing and not existing.

786.30.78

tyaktānantanijābhogā vyavacchedavikāriṇī | duḥkhadāvānalātaptā śokāśivakṛśāśayā || 78 ||

It has given up its own boundless joys, and keeps changing as it splits itself apart; it is burned by the wildfire of suffering, its heart worn thin by bitter grief.

iyamasmīti bhāvena śūnyena vikalīkṛtā | dehamātragṛhītāsthā paraṃ dainyamupāgatā || 79 ||

Crippled by the empty thought I am this body, it puts all its trust in the body alone, and falls into utter misery.

magnā mohamahāpaṅke jīrṇeva vanadantinī | bhāvābhāvalatādolā parilolaśarīrakā || 80 ||

Sunk in the great mire of delusion like an old elephant stuck in a forest swamp, it swings on a vine of being and not being, its little body swaying restlessly.

816.30.81

asārāpārasaṃsāravikāravyavahāriṇī | tāpopataptahṛdayā rāgatejonurañjitā || 81 ||

Forever caught up in the endless, empty changes of this world, its heart scorched with torment, colored by the burning glow of passion.

nijayūthaparibhraṣṭā mṛgīvāvaśatāṃ gatā | āvirbhāvoditākārā tirobhāve'stamāgatā || 82 ||

Strayed from its own herd like a helpless doe, it rises into shape when it appears, and sets like the sun when it fades away.

svasaṃkalpopayātāsu bhītā saṃbhramadṛṣṭiṣu | palāyate vāṣvanyāsu vetāleṣviva bālikā || 83 ||

Among these things that her own imagination has produced, whose sight bewilders her, she is frightened and runs away, like a young girl fleeing among ghosts.

uṣṭrīva madhuraṃ vinduṃ vāñchate bhāvitaṃ sukham | avāntaraparibhraṣṭā doṣāddoṣaṃ patatyadhaḥ || 84 ||

Like a she-camel longing for a sweet drop, she longs for a happiness that is only imagined; slipping in between, she falls downward from one fault into the next.

paraṃ vaiṣamyamāyāti saṃkaṭātsaṃkaṭaṃ gatā | duḥkhāddhuḥkhaṃ nipatitā vipado vipadi sthitā || 85 ||

She comes to the worst distress, going from one tight spot into another; she falls from one sorrow into the next sorrow, and stands from one disaster in another disaster.

nānānarthagaṇopetā ceṣṭāparavaśāśayākaṣṭātkaṣṭamanuprāptā paritāpānutāpinī || 86 ||

Joined with many kinds of misfortune, her mind helplessly driven by her own actions, she passes from ease into hardship, and grieves with torment after torment.

876.30.87

kramādābaddhavaidagdhyādvaidagdhyāṅgamupāgatāvicitrabandhanirmāṇaparākramapadaṃ gatā || 87 ||

Step by step, having gained skill, she becomes skill itself; she reaches the power to build bonds of every strange kind.

sarvataḥ śaṅkate bhītā prāṇātyayamupāgatākṣīṇatoyeva śapharī vivartanaparāyaṇā || 88 ||

Frightened, she suspects danger on every side, coming close to death, like a little fish in a drying pool, desperate, turning this way and that.

bālye vivaśasarvārthā yauvane cintayā''vṛtāvārdhake'pyatiduḥkhārtā mṛtā karmavaśīkṛtā || 89 ||

In childhood she is helpless in everything she wants; in youth she is wrapped in worry; in old age too she suffers great pain; and in death she is ruled by her own karma.

jāyate svarganagare nāgī pātālakoṭareāsurī daityavivare narastrī vasudhātale || 90 ||

She is born in heaven's city; a serpent-woman in a cave of the underworld; an asura-woman in a pit of the daityas; a human woman on the face of the earth.

rākṣasī rākṣasādhāre vānarī vanakoṭare | siṃhī girīndraśikhare kinnarī kulaparvate || 91 ||

A rakshasi in the home of the rakshasas, a she-monkey in a hollow of the forest, a lioness on the peak of the king of mountains, a kinnari on a great mountain range.

vidyādharī devagirau vyālī ca vanagartake | latā tarau khagī nīḍe vīrutsānau vane mṛgī || 92 ||

A vidyadhari on the mountain of the gods, a female serpent in a pit of the forest, a creeper on a tree, a bird in a nest, a shrub on a mountain ridge, a doe in the forest.

śete nārāyaṇo'mbhodhau dhyānī brahmapure'bjajaḥ | kāntāgato haraḥ śaile svarge suravaro hariḥ || 93 ||

Narayana lies on the ocean; Brahma, the lotus-born, meditates in his own city; Hara, gone to his beloved, is on the mountain; in heaven is Hari, best of the gods.

dinaṃ karoti tīkṣṇāṃśurvarṣatyambudharo jalam | karoti śvasanaṃ saṃvitsaparvatamahodadhim || 94 ||

The sharp-rayed sun makes the day; the cloud pours down rain; consciousness makes the wind that moves over the mountains and the great ocean.

ṛtucakraṃ pravahati sahasā kālamanḍalam | dinarātritayopaiti tejastimiratāṃ kramāt || 95 ||

She flows on, all at once, as the wheel of the seasons, as the circle of time; through day and night, in turn, she becomes light, and she becomes darkness.

kva cid bīja rasollāsāt kva cit pāṣāṇam auninī kva cin nadī rasavatī kva cit kumudavistṛtiḥ || 96 ||

Somewhere she bursts out with delight as the sap of a seed; somewhere she is silent like a stone; somewhere she is a river, flowing with water; somewhere she is a wide bed of white lotuses.

kva cit phalāvalīpākaiḥ kva cit kāṣṭhānalādibhiḥ kva cicchait yahimadvāri kva cit khādi na kiñcana || 97 ||

Somewhere she is in the ripening rows of fruit; somewhere in wood and fire and such things; somewhere in the cold, in ice, in water; somewhere there is nothing at all to eat.

kva cid ujjvalitākārā kva cit kṣṭā śilā kva cit kva cin nīlātha haritā kva cid agniḥ kva cin mahī || 98 ||

Somewhere she has a blazing form; somewhere she is a hard rock; somewhere she is blue, or she is green; somewhere she is fire; somewhere she is the earth.

sarvātmavāt sarvagatvāt sarvaśaktitvayogataḥ sarvatvādevaṃrūpaiva khādapyacchai va sā parā || 99 ||

Because she is the self of everything, because she is present everywhere, because she carries every power, because she is everything, she has just this one form; clearer even than the sky, she is the highest.

ciccinoti yathātmānaṃ yena yatra yadā yadā tattathānubhavatyambu spandādvīcyāditāṃ yathā || 100 ||

Just as water, when it stirs, becomes a wave and the rest, so consciousness, in whatever way, by whatever cause, wherever, whenever it comes to know itself, experiences itself in that very way.

haṃsī krauñcī bakī kākī sārasī turagī vṛkībakī balākā hariṇī vānarī kinnarī śunī || 101 ||

A female swan, a female curlew, a female stork, a female crow, a female sarus crane, a mare, a she-wolf, a female stork, a female crane, a doe, a she-monkey, a kinnari, a female dog.

vaṭīkā piṅgalī śālī makṣikā bhramarī śukīdhīḥ śrīrhrīḥ prītī ratiśca śaṃbarī śarvarī śaśī || 102 ||

A young banyan tree, a tawny lizard, a rice plant, a fly, a bee, a female parrot, understanding, fortune, modesty, affection, and desire, a sambar doe, the night, the moon.

etāsvanyāsu cānyāsu paribhramati yoniṣuvivartamānasaṃsāre jalāvarte tṛṇaṃ yathā || 103 ||

Among these wombs, and others, and yet others, she wanders in this ever-turning cycle of rebirth, like a blade of grass caught in a whirlpool.

bibhetyatha svasaṃkalpātsvaśabdādiva gardabhīnānayā sadṛganyāsti mugdhā bālā calā'balā || 104 ||

Then she is afraid of her own thought, like a she-donkey afraid of her own braying; there is no other like her, a bewildered young girl, restless and powerless.

eṣā sā kathitā tubhyaṃ jīvaśaktirmahāmuneprākṛtācāravivaśā varākī paśudharmiṇī || 105 ||

This, great sage, is the power of the soul that I have told you about, helpless in her worldly ways, wretched, living by the law of an animal.

karmātmetyabhidhāṃ prāptā śocyāsya paramātmanaḥ | anantaṃ duḥkhabahulaṃ svayaṃ vibhramamāśritā || 106 ||

She has come to be called 'the self of action,' a pitiable part of this supreme self; on her own she has taken shelter in an endless confusion, full of sorrow.

asadevānayākrāntaṃ vināśi sahajaṃ malam | taṇḍuleneva kañcūkamananyayā'vyavasthitam || 107 ||

It is only what is unreal that has taken hold of her, an inborn stain that will perish, like the husk on a grain of rice; not different from her, yet without any fixed being of its own.

anantavibhavabhrastā daurbhāgyaparitāpinī | śocantī prāpya jīvatvaṃ bhartr̥hīneva nāyikā || 108 ||

Fallen from endless wealth, and burning with misfortune, she grieves on reaching the state of a living being, like a woman left without her husband.

jaḍagateravalokaya śaktatāṃ nijapadasmarṇena vineha cit | vrajati kaṣṭamadhaḥ patanāya yā yadaraghaṭṭaghaṭīghanapīṭhavat || 109 ||

See the power in the way that dull matter moves. Here, consciousness, without remembering its own true place, goes down into hardship and falls, the way the buckets go down, one after another, on the wheel of a well.
