By that gaze which takes away all suffering, I have for a long time been made a dwelling place for him who sits on the flower-covered ridge, the witness of all three worlds.
The sage's flow of words came to a stop, like a raincloud stops raining once it has watered the crops. Then, after half a moment had passed, Rama was roused.
Just go on resting on this alone, stay firm, and do not take a foothold here again. This wheel of the world, indeed, turns on a hub that is nothing but intention.
Even when it is checked by effort, it still rushes on with force. It can be stopped only by taking up great manly effort, strength, and wisdom, applied the right way.
nābhiṃ saṃsāracakrasya cittameva nirodhayetprajñāsaujanyayuktena śāstrasaṃvalitena ca || 8 ||
One should hold back the mind alone, which is the hub of this wheel of the world, using wisdom joined with goodness, and combined with the teaching of the scriptures.
Relying on one's own effort, one should first hold back the mind, hold back the confusion, in the form of ignorance, that has been moving on ever since Brahma.
Rama, a wise man should not trouble himself weighing pleasure against pain, telling apart a face gone dull and damp with sorrow from one that is bright and free of that dampness.
api citranarāddehanarastucchataraḥ smṛtaḥādhivyādhiparimlāne svayaṃ kledini nāśini || 14 ||
Indeed, the man of flesh is reckoned more worthless than the man painted in a picture, since the body of flesh withers from mental grief and bodily disease, turns damp and rotten by itself, and perishes.
na tathā sthiratā dehe citrapuṃso yathā kila | vināśito hi citrastho deho naśyati nānyathā || 15 ||
The real body does not have as much lasting power as the painted man's body does. For the body in a picture perishes only when someone destroys it, never otherwise.
dehas tu pālito'py uccair naśyaty eva na vardhate | tena śreṣṭhaś citradeho nāyaṃ saṃkalpadehakaḥ || 17 ||
But the body of flesh, however well it is cared for, only wastes away, it never grows better. So the painted body is the finer one, not this body, which is made only of imagination.
ye guṇāś citradehe hi na te saṃkalpadehake | citradehād api jaḍād yo'yaṃ tucchataraḥ kila || 18 ||
Whatever good qualities are found in the painted body are not found in this body made only of imagination. This body is more worthless, indeed, than even the painted body, and that painted body is itself lifeless.
So, sinless one, what regard should you still have for that body of flesh? It is a body made of long-held imagination, great one, give it no regard at all.
svapnasaṃkalpajād dehād api tucchataro hy ayam | alpasaṃkalpajo dīrghaiḥ sukhaduḥkhair na gṛhyate || 20 ||
This body is more worthless, indeed, than even a body born of a dream's imagining. What is born of a short imagining is not gripped by long-lasting pleasure and pain.
dīrghasaṃkalpajaścāyaṃ dīrghaduḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ | deho hi saṃkalpamayo nāyamasti na vāsti naḥ || 21 ||
But this body, born of a long imagining, is pained by long-lasting pain. The body, indeed, is made only of thought, for us it neither exists, nor does it fail to exist.
kiṃ vyarthametadarthaṃ hi mūḍho'yaṃ kleśabhājanam | yathā citramaye puṃsi kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ || 22 ||
Why does this fool needlessly turn himself into a vessel of suffering, for the sake of this body? Just as, when the man in a painting is cut or worn away, that is no real loss.
tathā saṃkalpapuruṣe kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ | yathā manorājyamaye kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ || 23 ||
So too, when the man made only of imagination is cut or worn away, that is no real loss. And just as, when something in a daydream is cut or worn away, that is no real loss.
yathā dvitīye śaśini kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ | yathā svapnasamārambhe kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ || 24 ||
Just as, when a second moon is cut or worn away, that is no real loss, just as, when something arising in a dream is cut or worn away, that is no real loss.
yathā nadyātapajale kṣate kṣīṇe na tatkṣatiḥ | saṃkalpamātraracite prakṛtyaiva ca nāśini || 25 ||
Just as, when the water of a mirage on a sunlit riverbed is cut or worn away, that is no real loss, since it is a thing made only by imagination, and by its own nature bound to vanish.
na brahma vikṛtiṃ yāti kiṃvā dehakṣaye kṣatam | bhramaccakropariṣṭho hi pūrvacakropacakravat || 28 ||
Brahman does not change, nor is there any harm when the body dies, for it stands above the whirling wheel, like a small wheel resting on a bigger, earlier wheel.
Just as someone made completely dizzy sees the whole circle of the directions spinning, because of a false idea that suddenly takes hold and runs wild in him,
The body is made by intention, and because of false knowledge it seems to exist though it does not exist. Since it is made from what is unreal, it can never be real.
The body rises up out of the unreal, like the thought of a snake in a rope. Though it is unreal, it still carries out the actions of the world, as if it were real.
This house of the body is made of what is unreal. It is empty. It has arisen, and has come to feel like something real, like a ghost that a foolish child only imagines.
Coming from who knows where, with no substance in it, shunned by every good person, the ego entered this house like an evil ghost, going by the name of the mind.
Having entered the empty house of the body, this is what the ghost of the mind has done: even great souls have grown afraid of it, and stay bound in meditation because of it.
It is strange that those who delight in this body, this house possessed by the ghost of the mind, still stand today joined to it as if it were their own self.
ahaṃkārabṛhadyakṣagṛhe dagdhaśarīrake | viharannāsthayā sādho na tu vai tatkil sthiram || 46 ||
Good man, that body is the great house of the ego-ghost, and it will end in fire. Even if you live there with attachment, know that it is never lasting.
Whatever this moving machine of the body does, whatever it takes hold of, Rama, this body strung with ropes of wind, all of that is the working of the ego.
Just as space, though it does nothing, is still a cause of a tree's growth, simply by being there, so too the Self, simply by being there, is the cause behind the workings of the mind.
Rama, the self and the mind are always separate from each other. What real connection can there be between them, any more than between the sky, which is open and bright, and the earth, which is blind?
Rama, wrapped in these quick, flickering movements, which are powers belonging to the self, the mind gets mistaken for the self. That is pure foolishness.
The self is truly the form of light, eternal, present everywhere, all-powerful. Know the mind to be a cunning ego, sitting in the heart, a thick darkness.
ātmāsi vastutastvaṃ hi sarvajño na mano bhṛśam| dūre kuru manomohaṃ kimetenābhisaṅgataḥ || 65 ||
You are the self. In truth you are the one who knows everything, not the mind at all. Throw the delusion of the mind far away. What use is there in clinging to it?
The mind, Rama, best of men, is like a ghoul living in the empty house of the body. This wicked being keeps imagining things, even while it brushes against silence itself.
Give up this ghoul called the mind. It leads to rebirth, it brings nothing good, and it steals away all your courage. Give it up, and be steady as the self that you really are.
But once the mind-ghost has grown calm, teachers, scriptures, purpose, and relatives can lift a man up, the way a deer is pulled out of shallow mud.
In this empty city that is the world, everything has been fouled, even the house of the body, by the reckless mind-demon that leaps and roams about inside it.
This wilderness that is the world is empty, entirely made of broken-up bodies, and wound all through with the mind-ghost. Who would not be afraid of it?
In this wilderness that is the world, a person grows confused like a bewildered child. He must win steadiness for himself, by himself, and pull himself up by his own self.
A person should not sink into something that looks like a kinsman but only smears you with mud for a moment's coolness, the way a buffalo sinks into a muddy pond.
For the sake of this body, which is impure, worthless, unlucky, and ugly, one should not become attached. Worry over it is as fierce and terrible as the goddess Chandi.
The body is made by one, and inhabited by another, a demon. The suffering belongs to one, and the one who enjoys it is yet another. Strange is this wheel of foolishness.
Just as the hardness of a stone has only one form, so it is with the self too, because, once there is only bare existence in common, nothing else is possible.
Just as the hardness of a stone is not separate from the stone, so the mind and its states are not separate from the self, because they are not different from bare existence, and because the mind has no standing of its own apart from it.
This was told, to calm the suffering of this world, by the god who wears the crescent moon on his head. There is a mountain, shining with a flood of moonlight, that rises higher than the sky.
For the sake of austerity, I settled for a long time into the ways of an ascetic, surrounded by a crowd of perfected sages, and gathered together the meaning of the scriptures.
The dark fortnight of the month of Shravana had passed and come to its end. Night was falling, and on every side the directions had grown calm and hushed, as still and silent as wood.
khadgacchedyāndhakāreṣu kuñjeṣu gahaneṣu ca | etasminnantare tatra yāmārdhe prathame gate || 93 ||
In the groves and the thick woods, the darkness was so deep it could be cut with a sword. Meanwhile, there, half of the first watch of the night had passed.
It looked like a hundred bright clouds, like a cluster of moon discs, and it lit up the groves in every direction. Seeing it, I was filled with wonder.
I watched it with outward eyes that were lit by an inner light. And as I kept looking at that hilltop, there arrived the one who wears the crescent moon.
His hand rested in Gauri's hand, and Nandi went ahead of him, clearing the way. He spoke to the disciples standing there, and, composed, accepted the water offered to him.
I offered him arghya, bowed low, and paid homage to the god. And she joined me in honoring him too, that honest and cool woman, moonlight's own companion.
She was honored together with her companions, and with the whole band of Shiva's attendants besides. When the worship ended, in a voice as cool as the light of the full moon,
thoughts that work only good, are they established in the Highest? Does your penance go on without hindrance, and does good fortune keep following it?
With a voice full of humble courtesy, I answered. Rama, this is what I said: Great lord, for those who have the blessing of remembering the three eyed god in this world,
There is no one in this whole world who does not bow down to you. The same is true of those lands, those countries, those directions, and those mountains
where people live whose minds are fixed only on remembering you. That is the fruit of merit earned in the past, and it nourishes the merit of the present.
And remembering you, my lord, also sows the seed of the merit yet to come. You are the one vessel holding the nectar of knowledge, the moon whose moonlight is steadiness.
Lord Shiva said: Listen, best of those who know the highest truth. I will tell you the highest way to worship god. By doing it, even just once, a person is set free.
na brāhmaṇo nā'vanipo nāhaṃ na tvaṃ dvijottama | na devo deharūpo hi na devaścittarūpadhṛk || 120 ||
God is not the priest, and not the king. God is not I, and not you, best of the twice born. God does not have the form of a body, and god does not take the form of the mind.
How could that be found in a thing bound and limited by shape and the rest? The wise know that uncontrived shining, without beginning or end, as pure awareness, as Shiva himself.
That alone is called by the name "God"; worship that alone. That alone truly exists, because everything, real or unreal, takes that as its own true form.
For those who do not know the true nature of Shiva, worship of an image is prescribed. It is like this: for someone unable to walk the full distance of a yojana, a shorter distance of one krosha is set instead.
The fruit gained from Rudra and other such gods is limited and measured. But the fruit that is uncreated, without beginning or end, is the bliss of the Self.
bodhaḥ sāmyaṃ śama iti puṣpāṇyagrāṇi tatra ca | śivaṃ cinmātramamalaṃ pūjyaṃ pūjyavidō viduḥ || 127 ||
Understanding, evenness of mind, and calm, these are the finest flowers to offer there. Those who know what deserves worship know that Shiva, who is pure and stainless consciousness itself, is the one to be worshipped.
ātmasaṃvittirūpaṃ tu tyaktvā devārcanaṃ janāḥ | kṛtrimārcāsu ye saktāściraṃ kleśaṃ bhajanti te || 129 ||
But people who give up worshipping God as the knowledge of the Self, and cling instead to artificial forms of worship, suffer distress for a long time.
jñātajñeyā hi ye santo bālakrīḍopamaṃ ca te | ātmadhyānādṛte brahmannkurvanto devapūjanam || 130 ||
O Brahmin, the truly wise, who have known what must be known, see the worship of God done without meditation on the Self as nothing more than a children's game.
Know yourself to be this space of consciousness, the Self, the living being, imperishable, your own true nature. No one else is to be worshipped; worship is truly the worship of the Self.
Sri Vasishtha said: Lord, tell me how this world is nothing but a space of consciousness, and how that same consciousness comes to have the states of being a living being and so on.
Ishvara said: Only the space of consciousness truly exists here, without a far shore or a near shore, without any limit. It can never become an object anywhere, and it alone remains when an entire age of the world comes to an end.
So the world, whose nature is consciousness, appears just like a city seen in a dream. In the same way, the world, whose self is nothing but the space of consciousness, is clear and pure, resting on no wall or foundation.
Because it can never truly become an object at all, this visible world is nothing but the space of consciousness. Because it is consciousness, it shines forth at the start of creation, and that shining is what is called "the world."
tasmātsvapnapurākāraṃ yadidaṃ bhāsate jagat | tatra cidvyomamātrātmanyanyatā nāma kā kutaḥ || 138 ||
So this world that appears, shaped like a city in a dream, in it, within a self that is nothing but the space of consciousness, what could "otherness" even be, and where would it come from?
Mountains are nothing but consciousness. The sky of this world is nothing but consciousness. The self and the living being are nothing but consciousness. The whole line of living creatures is nothing but consciousness.
Tell me, at the very start of creation, in this all-knowing space of consciousness, what else could possibly exist, whether in a different heaven or a different city?
Space, the highest space, the space of Brahman, and the consciousness that is this world, these are only different names for one and the same thing, just as a tree can be called by more than one name.
In this way, these two are experienced through dream, through mere thought, and through illusion. Then indeed, it is only the space of consciousness that appears as the world.
Just as this space of awareness appears in a dream as the shape of a whole world, in just the same way it is that same awareness which appears to us in this state we merely call "waking," itself a kind of dream.
Just as, in a city seen in a dream, nothing else at all exists anywhere apart from the space of consciousness, so too in the waking state, nothing exists apart from that same vast consciousness.
yato na saṃbhavyanyacchetyaṃ kiṃcittato'khilam cittaṃ saṃcetyamapyetadacetyaṃ sajjagatsthitam || 145 ||
Because nothing else that could ever be an object exists at all, this whole world, mind itself, though it seems an object one can know, is really beyond being any object at all; and just this is what stands as the world that exists.
paramākāśakalanaṃ trijagatsvayamutthitam svapnavadviddhi cidvyomni na tvetaddvaitavatsthitam || 146 ||
Know that the three worlds, a stirring of the highest space, arisen on their own, exist within the space of consciousness just like a dream; none of this stands there as if it were two separate things.
Just as a pot, a cloth, and everything else in a dream have nothing for their true nature but the space of consciousness, so too this creation, from the very start, is nothing but that same space of consciousness.
yāḥ kāścana dṛśo ye ye bhāvābhāvāstrikālagāḥ | sadeśakālacittāstatsarvaṃ cidvyomamātrakam || 149 ||
Whatever there is to see, whatever things exist or do not exist across past, present, and future, together with their place, their time, and their mind, all of it is nothing but the space of consciousness.
sa eṣa devaḥ kathito yaḥ paraḥ paramārthatḥ | yastvaṃ so'ham aśeṣaṃ vā jagadeva ca yo'khilaḥ || 150 ||
This very one, who in ultimate truth is the Supreme, has been declared to be God, the one who is you, who is I, who without exception is this whole world, who is everything.
sarvasya vastujātasya jagato'nyasya te mama | deho hi cetanākāśe paramātmaiva netarat || 151 ||
Of every single thing that exists, this world, anything else, you, me, the body is truly nothing but the Supreme Self within the space of consciousness; it is nothing other than that.
Just as, in a dream-city built by mere imagination, there is no body that is anything but the space of consciousness, so too, O sage, in this creation, right from the first act of creation onward, there is no other form than that.
