16.28.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ bhuśuṇḍavṛttāntaḥ kathitas te mayānagha | anayā prajñayā tīrṇo bhuśuṇḍo mohasaṃkaṭāt || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: I have told you the whole story of Bhushunda, blameless one. By this wisdom Bhushunda crossed beyond the danger of delusion.

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya svaprāṇābhyāsapūrvikām | bhuśuṇḍavatmahābāho bhava tīrṇamahārṇavaḥ || 2 ||

Grasp this insight, gained through the practice of your own breath, mighty-armed one, and become one who has crossed the great ocean, like Bhushunda.

yathā jñānena yogena saṃtatābhyāsajanmanā | bhuśuṇḍaḥ prāptavānprāpyaṃ tathāsādaya tatpadam || 3 ||

Just as Bhushunda reached the goal he sought, through knowledge and yoga born of constant practice, so you too reach that same state.

asaktabuddhayaḥ sarve bhuśuṇḍavadavasthitim | prāpnuvanti pare tattve prāṇāpānāvalokinaḥ || 4 ||

All those whose minds are free of attachment, who watch their in-breath and out-breath, reach a state fixed in the highest reality, just like Bhushunda.

etā vicitrā bhavatā śrutā vijñānadṛṣṭayaḥ | idānīṃ dhiyamālambya yathecchasi tathā kuru || 5 ||

You have now heard these many wondrous insights of true knowledge. Now hold fast to your own understanding, and do as you wish.

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavan bhavatā bhūmibhāsvatā jñānaraśmibhiḥ | hārdamuddāmadaurātmyaṃ pramṛṣṭamakhilaṃ tamaḥ || 6 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, you shine on the earth with rays of knowledge, and you have wiped away all the darkness of my heart, the unchecked evil in it.

prabuddhāḥ smaḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ smaḥ praviṣṭāḥ smaḥ svamāspadam | sthitāḥ smo jñātavijñeyā bhavanto hyaparā iva || 7 ||

We are awake, we are full of joy, we have entered our own true home. We stand here, knowing what is to be known, as if we have become other people.

aho bhuśuṇḍacaritaṃ paraṃ vismayakārakam | bhagavan bhavatā proktam uttamārthāvabodhanam || 8 ||

How wonderful is the story of Bhushunda, it fills us with wonder. Lord, you have told it so that we may understand the highest truth.

bhuśuṇḍacarite brahmannetasmin kathite tvayā | yaccharīragṛhaṃ proktaṃ māṃsacarmāsthinirmitam || 9 ||

In this story of Bhushunda that you have told, Brahmin, you spoke of the body as a house built of flesh, skin, and bone.

tatkena nāma racitaṃ kuto vā tatsamutthitam | kathaṃ vā sthitimāyātaṃ ko vā tatrāvatiṣṭhate || 10 ||

Who really made it? Where did it come from? How did it come to exist? And who lives inside it?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca paramārthāvabodhāya doṣāpākaraṇāya ca śṛṇu rāghava tattvena vakṣyamāṇamidaṃ mayā || 11 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: To help you understand the highest truth, and to remove your faults, listen, Raghava, to what I am now about to tell you truly.

asthisthūṇaṃ navadvāraṃ raktamāṃsāvalepanam śarīrasadanaṃ rāma na kenacididaṃ kṛtam || 12 ||

Rama, this house that is the body, its pillars are bones, it has nine doors, and it is plastered with blood and flesh, was not made by anyone.

ābhāsamātramevedamitthamevāvabhāsate dvicandravibhramākāraṃ sadasaccavyavasthitam || 13 ||

This is nothing but appearance; it shows itself only in this way, like the illusion of two moons, existing as both real and unreal.

dvicandradarśanavidhau candradvitvaṃ sadaiva hi vastutaścaika evenduḥ sthito dehastathaiva hi || 14 ||

When someone sees two moons, he always sees two, even though in fact there is only one moon. The body is exactly the same.

dehapratyayakāle hi deho'yaṃ samavasthitaḥ asanneva ca sattasmātproktaḥ sadāsadātmakaḥ || 15 ||

This body stands only as long as the notion body lasts. In that moment it is not unreal but real, and that is why it is called both real and unreal.

svapne svapnāvabodhaḥ saṃstvananyadā sa mudhaiva hi | budbudo budbudavidhau satyo mithyaiva cānyadā || 16 ||

In a dream, what one dream-knows is real inside the dream, but at another time it is simply not true. A bubble, while it is a bubble, is real, but at another time it is simply not true.

deho dehavidhau satyo hyasatya itaradvidhau | pratibhāsavidhau tāvajjalaṃ sadadasadanyadā || 17 ||

The body is real as long as it is taken to be a body, but it is not real when looked at differently. In the same way, in a mirage, water seems real for a moment, but it is not real at another time.

pratibhāsavidhau dehaḥ sannasaṃścānyadā smṛtaḥ | ābhāsamātramevedamitthaṃ saṃprati bhāsate || 18 ||

In the same way, the body is taken to be real in the moment it appears, and remembered as unreal at another time. All this is nothing but appearance, it merely appears this way, right now.

ayaṃ nāmāhamityantargṛhītamananaṃ sthitam | māṃsāsthimayanirmāṇadeho'hamiti vibhramam || 19 ||

The thought held within the mind, this is who I am, stays fixed there, the delusion I am a body made of flesh and bone.

tyaja saṃkalpanirmāṇadehāḥ santi sahasraśaḥ | sukhatalpagato yena svapnadehena diktataṭān || 20 ||

Give up this delusion. Bodies built by nothing but thought and imagination exist by the thousands, like the dream-body of a man lying happily on his bed, that wanders off to the far edges of the world's directions.

paribhramasi he rāma sa dehaste kva saṃsthitaḥ | jāgarāyāṃ manorājye yena svargapurāntaram || 21 ||

You wander there, Rama, so where is that body of yours now? Even while awake, in the kingdom your own mind imagines, you go deep into the city of heaven.

paribhramasi meruṃ vā sa dehaste kva saṃsthitaḥ | svapneṣvapi ca yaḥ svapnastatra yena mahītaṭān || 22 ||

Or you wander to Mount Meru, so where is that body of yours now? Even inside a dream, in a dream within that dream, you go to the shores of the earth.

paribhramasi he rāma sa dehaste kva saṃsthitaḥ | manorājyaṃ manorājye mahadvibhavabhūmiṣu || 23 ||

You wander there, Rama, so where is that body of yours now? Kingdom of the mind within kingdom of the mind, you go into lands of great wealth and splendor.

paribhramasi yeneha sa dehaste kva saṃsthitaḥ | gatairdhehairmanorājye yā vicitrā jagatkriyāḥ || 24 ||

By all this you wander here, so where is that body of yours now? With bodies now gone, in the kingdom your mind imagines, come the many wondrous doings of the world.

prakaroṣi mahābāho te dehāste kva saṃsthitāḥ | vilāsinyānurāgiṇyā yena saṃkalpakāntayā || 25 ||

Mighty-armed Rama, you act with a loving, playful woman who is nothing but the beloved of your own imagination — so where do those bodies of yours stand?

nirvṛtiṃ yāsi dehena sa dehastē kvā saṃsthitaḥ | ētē rāma yathā dēhā manasaḥ sadasantamayāḥ || 26 ||

By that body you reach your delight — where does that body of yours stand? These bodies, Rama, are of the mind, made of both the real and the unreal.

tathaiva tādṛśācāro dēho'yaṃ manasaḥ smṛtaḥ | idaṃ dhanamayaṃ dēho dēśo'yamiti vibhramaḥ || 27 ||

In the same way, this body that acts so is known to be only of the mind. Thinking, 'this body is made of wealth,' or 'this is a place,' is nothing but confusion.

tatsarvaṃ cittavīryasya saṃkalpasya vijṛmbhitam | dīrghasvapnamimaṃ viddhi dīrghaṃ vā cittavibhramam || 28 ||

All that is the unfolding of the mind's power of will. Know it to be a long dream, or a long delusion of the mind.

dīrghaṃ vāpi manorājyaṃ saṃsāraṃ raghunandana | prabodhameṣyasi yadā paramātmecchayā svayā || 29 ||

This long mental kingdom, Rama, is the cycle of the world itself. You will wake up from it when you yourself, as the highest self, wish to.

drakṣyasi tvaṃ tadā samyagidamarkodaye yathā | svapnasankalpajālena yathānyaiva jagatsthitiḥ || 30 ||

Then you will see all this clearly, as things become clear at sunrise. You will see that the world, woven from the net of dream and imagination, is something altogether different.

tathaiveyaṃ hi saṃkalpakalanā kācideva hi | yathā pūrvaṃ mayotpattiḥ proktā kamalajanmanaḥ || 31 ||

In just this way, this world too is nothing but a working of imagination, as I told you earlier about the birth of the lotus-born Brahma.

326.28.32

manasaḥ svayamevāntaḥsaṃkalpakalanodbhavā | vicitraracanopetaṃ manastatrāttavibhramam || 32 ||

This rises up by itself, from within the mind, as the mind's own act of imagining. The mind, filled with these strange creations, falls into confusion over them.

saṃkalpakalanāmātraṃ tathedamavabhāsanam | yathā kalpita ābhāso manaso'bjajatāṃ gataḥ || 33 ||

In the same way, this whole appearance is nothing but a mere act of imagining — like the imagined image in the mind that took on the form of the lotus-born Brahma.

dehādvicintito dehaḥ sthito'nyastadvadeva hi | prākpravāhacirābhyasto vāsanātiśayena yaḥ || 34 ||

In the same way, out of one body, another body that is merely imagined comes to stand there as if it were real — a body long formed, carried down from the past, by the sheer weight of old impressions.

tathaiva dṛśyate dehastathā'kṛtyudayena saḥ | pauruṣeṇa prayatnena saṃkalpo hyayameva cit || 35 ||

In just this way that body is seen, through the rising of its form by one's own effort — and this act of will is, in truth, nothing but consciousness itself.

anyathā bhāvyate rāma bhūyate tadihānyathā | ayaṃ so'yaṃ mamāyaṃ ca saṃsāra iti bhāvite || 36 ||

Rama, when something is imagined in one way, it then becomes that very way here — when one thinks, 'this is that,' 'this is mine,' and 'this is the world.'

satyo yo bhāvyate rāma bhāvanādārḍhyasaṃbhavaḥ | bhāvitaṃ tīvravegena yadevāśu tadeva hi || 37 ||

Rama, what is imagined as real becomes real through the firmness of that imagining. What is imagined with great intensity becomes so at once.

sarvatra dṛśyate rāma kāntevātyantavallabhā | aharvyāvṛttirabhyastā yathā svapneṣu dṛśyate || 38 ||

This imagining is seen everywhere, Rama, the way an utterly beloved woman is seen everywhere. The passing of day after day, once it becomes a habit, is seen just as it is seen in dreams.

tathāyaṃ bhāvanābhyastaḥ saṃsāro'pyavalokyate | yathā svapnāvanau kṣipramaharyadavabhāsate || 39 ||

In the same way, this world too, shaped by such constant imagining, comes to be seen as real — just as, within a dream, a whole day can quickly appear to pass.

tathedamalpakālasthamapi saṃlakṣyate sthiram | vyomanyeva yathā tāpatapte saṃdṛśyate sarit || 40 ||

In the same way, this world, though it lasts only a short time, seems to be lasting — just as a river seems to appear in the sky, shimmering with heat.

dharāpyavidyamānāpi saṃkalpāddṛśyate tathā | dṛśyate dṛṣṭivairūpyādyathā vyomani picchikā || 41 ||

The earth too, though it does not truly exist, is seen in just this way, through imagination — seen only because of a fault in one's sight, the way a speck like a feather is seen in an empty sky.

tathaiveyaṃ jagallakṣmīrdurjñānādavabhāsate | dṛśyate samayā dṛṣṭyā na yathā vyomni picchikā || 42 ||

In just this way, this glory of the world appears only because of faulty understanding. Seen with true sight, it is not there at all — just as that feather-like speck is not there in the sky for one who sees correctly.

samyagdṛṣṭyā jagallakṣmīstathaeyaṃ nāvabhāsate | bhīrurabhyeti na yathā svasaṃkalpeṣu saṃbhramam || 43 ||

With true sight, this glory of the world likewise does not appear — just as a fearful person does not fall into panic over his own imaginings.

svasaṃkalpe hi saṃsāre na tathaeti bhayaṃ sudhīḥ | sva eva hi svabhāvo'yamitthaṃ saṃprati bhāsate || 44 ||

In this world, which is only one's own imagining, a wise person does not fall into fear. This is simply one's own nature — that is how it now appears.

saṃsārasaraṇisthityāṃ kasmātko'tra vibheti kiṃ | sa eva kiṃcitsaṃśodhyaḥ śuddhyā vimalatāṃ gate || 45 ||

In the ongoing course of the world, who here is afraid, of what, and why? That same self only needs to be purified a little, until through that purity it becomes stainless.

tasminn dṛśyate rāma moho'yaṃ jagataḥ sthitaḥ | samyagālokamātreṇa svabhāvaḥ śuddhimṛcchati || 46 ||

In that state, Rama, this delusion of the world, though it stands there, is no longer seen. Through right seeing alone, one's own nature becomes pure.

na gṛhṇāti malaṃ bhūyastāmratāmiva kāñcanam | ābhāsamātramevedaṃ na sannāsajjagattrayam || 47 ||

It does not become impure again, just as gold, once purified, does not turn back into copper. This world of three realms is nothing but a mere appearance — neither real nor unreal.

ityanyakalanātyāgaḥ samyagālokanaṃ viduḥ | maraṇaṃ jīvitaṃ svargo jñānamajñānameva ca || 48 ||

The wise call it right seeing when, in this way, one gives up the very notion of 'an other.' So too are death, life, heaven, knowledge, and ignorance.

cidābhāsādṛte nāstītyekatā samyagīkṣaṇam | tvamahantādisaṃsāra iti me na diśo daśa || 49 ||

Nothing exists except this appearance of consciousness; to see this as a single thing is true seeing. For me there are no ten directions at all, no you, no I, nothing else, no world.

sarvaṃ svābhāsam eveti samyagālokanaṃ viduḥ | sadāsanmayasaṃsāre yathā bhūtārthadarśanāt || 50 ||

They call it true seeing when someone knows that everything is only its own appearance. This comes from seeing things exactly as they really are, in this world made of both being and non-being.

nāstameti na codeti samyagālokanānmanaḥ| nirṇīya sarvabhāvānāmasattvaṃ sattvameva ca || 51 ||

Through true seeing, the mind neither sets nor rises, once it has settled that all things both exist and do not exist.

niṣkāmaṃ śāntimabhyeti samyagālokanānmanaḥ| na nindati na ca stauti na hṛṣyati na śocati || 52 ||

Through true seeing the mind reaches a peace free of desire. It does not blame, it does not praise, it does not rejoice, and it does not grieve.

śītalāṃ satyatāmeti samyagālokanānmanaḥ| avaśyameva martavyaṃ sarvaireva hi bandhubhiḥ || 53 ||

Through true seeing, the mind reaches a cool, steady truth. All relatives, every single one, must certainly die.

iti bandhuvivyogeṣu kiṃ vṛthā paritapyase| avaśyameva ca mayā martavyamiti niścayaḥ || 54 ||

So why do you torment yourself uselessly over separation from your relatives? It is certain that I too must die.

ityātmamarṇaprāptau kiṃ mudhā paritapyase| avaśyameva jātena kiṃcitsuvibhavādikam || 55 ||

So why do you torment yourself uselessly when your own death is certain to come? For anyone who is born, some amount of prosperity and the rest is bound to happen.

prāptavyaṃ puruṣeṇeti harṣasyāvasaro hi kaḥsarvasyaiva hi saṃsāre narasya vyavahāriṇaḥ || 56 ||

Since a person is bound to get these things anyway, what real occasion is there for joy? This is true for absolutely everyone who deals with the affairs of this world.

arthāyātā bhavatyāpacchokasyāvasaro hi kaḥbṛṃhatyudeti sphurati budbudaugha ivārṇave || 57 ||

Trouble comes for the sake of wealth, so what real occasion is there for grief? It swells up, rises and glitters, like a mass of bubbles on the ocean.

idaṃ hi jagatāṃ jālaṃ kimatra paridevanāsatsadeva sadaivaitadasadevāsadeva hi || 58 ||

This is simply the net of the worlds, so what is there here to grieve over? What is real is always simply real, and what is unreal is always simply unreal.

kriyāvaicitryamātre tu kimanyatparidevyatenāhamasmi na cābhūvaṃ bhaviṣyāmi na so'dhunā || 59 ||

This is all just the many different things that happen, so what else is there to grieve over? I am not what I was, I was not what I am now, I will not be what I am now, and I am not now what I will be.

deho'yaṃ citradoṣotthaḥ kimanyatparidevyatedehāccedanya evāhaṃ cidābhāsastadaṅga he || 60 ||

This body has arisen from some strange defect, so what else is there to grieve over? And if I am indeed different from the body, being only the appearance of consciousness, that is how it is, friend.

kau tau me sadasadbhāvau yanniṣṭhaṃ paritapyate | iti niścayavatsvāntaṃ samyagjñānātmano muneḥ || 61 ||

What are these two things, my existing and my not existing, that anyone should grieve resting on them? Such is the firm, settled mind of the sage whose very nature is true knowledge.

nāstameti na codeti na śāntaṃ paritapyate | paratāmeva nāśāntāmanuttamapade sthitaḥ || 62 ||

That mind neither rises nor sets, and being at peace, it does not suffer. Standing in the highest state, it never turns into a restless, troubled state.

ādatte tittirī mṛdvīṃ tṛṇakoṭimivāmalām | etadarthamasatye'sminnāsthā kāryā manāgapi || 63 ||

A tittiri bird holds up a soft, clean blade of grass. For that reason, one should not place even the slightest concern in this unreal world.

surajjveva balīvardo badhyate janturāsthayā | atastvayā dṛḍhamidamiti nirṇīya buddhitḥ || 64 ||

As an ox is bound by a strong rope, a creature is bound by its own concern. So you must firmly settle this in your mind.

āsthārahitatayā buddhyā vihartavyamihānagha | kartavyameva kartavyamakartavyamupekṣyate || 65 ||

You should live in this world with a mind free of concern, sinless one. What must be done should indeed be done; what must not be done should be disregarded.

āsthānāsthe parityajya līlayaiva mahādhiyā | ābhāsamātramevedaṃ yasya ca pratibhāsate || 66 ||

Having given up both concern and lack of concern, acting only in play, with a great mind, for the person to whom this world appears as mere appearance.

so'ntaḥ śītalatāmeti dinānte bhuvanaṃ yathā | pratibhāsaṃ parityajya padārthapaṭalavraje || 67 ||

That person becomes cool and calm within, just as the world grows cool at the end of the day, once he has given up the sense of appearance amid this whole array of objects.

ābhāsamātrasāmānyamidamālokayānagha | ābhāsamātrakaṃ rāma cittāmarśakalaṅkitam || 68 ||

See this, sinless one, as nothing but a common appearance. It is only appearance, Rama, stained by the touch of the mind.

tatastadapi saṃtyajya nirābhāso bhavottama | cidākāśamayo nityaṃ sarvagaḥ sarvavarjitaḥ || 69 ||

Then, having given up even that appearance, become free of all appearance, best of men, eternal, made of the space of consciousness, present everywhere, free from everything.

ābhāsasya parityāge bhavasyekāntanirmalaḥ | nāhamasmi na me bhogāḥ satyā ityabhibhāvite || 70 ||

By giving up appearance, you become utterly pure, once this thought fully takes hold: I am not this, and my pleasures are not real.

nedamāḍambaraṃ vyarthamanarthāyāvabhāsate | aham-eva hi vā sarvaṃ cid-ity-evaṃ vibhāvite || 71 ||

This whole grand display does not shine out in vain or to cause harm, once you have truly realized: I alone am everything, or, everything is consciousness.

726.28.72

nedamāḍambaraṃ vyarthamanarthāyāvabhāsate | darśanadvayam-apy-etat-satyaṃ-atyaṃta-siddhi-dam || 72 ||

This whole display does not appear pointlessly, or to harm you. Both these ways of seeing it are true, and each one brings you all the way to fulfillment.

yad-ekam-etayo-vetsi ramyaṃ tad-rāma saṃśraya | dvābhyām-eva-atha vai tābhyāṃ darśanābhyām-iha-anagha || 73 ||

Rama, of these two ways of seeing, hold to whichever one you find pleasing. Or, sinless one, you may rely on both together, right here.

viharan kuru kalyāṇa rāga-dveṣa-parikṣayam | yat-kiṃcid-uditaṃ loke yan-nabhasy-atha vā divi || 74 ||

Good man, live in the world, but bring wanting and hating to a complete end. Whatever has come to be in this world, in the sky, or in heaven,

tat-sarvaṃ prāpyate rāma rāga-dveṣa-parikṣayāt | rāgād-ih-tayā buddhyā yādṛg-rāma vic-eṣṭitam || 75 ||

all of it, Rama, is reached by ending wanting and hating. Whatever is done here, Rama, by a mind that has destroyed wanting and its kin,

tattadeva prayātyāśu mūḍhānāṃ viparītatām | dveṣadoṣormiruddhāsu na guṇāścittavṛttiṣu || 76 ||

for fools, that same action quickly turns into its opposite. Where the mind is choked by the waves of the fault of hate, no virtue grows.

padaṃ kurvanti dagdhāsu sthalīṣu hariṇā iva | rāgo dveṣaśca sarpaudvau na vilīnau manovile || 77 ||

Such fools take their stand on scorched ground, the way deer wander onto it. Wanting and hating, the two snakes, have not yet dissolved in the cave of the mind.

yasya kalpatarostasmātkiṃ nāmāṅga na labhyate | ye hi prājñāḥ svaniyatā vidagdhāḥ śāstraśālinaḥ || 78 ||

My dear, what indeed is not gained from that wish granting tree by the wise, the self controlled, the skillful, those well versed in the scriptures?

rāgadveṣamayāste vai jambukāste dhigastu tān | maddhanaṃ bhuktamanyena dhanaṃ tyaktaṃ mayā'nyataḥ || 79 ||

Those who are entirely wanting and hating are nothing but jackals, and a curse be on them. My wealth was enjoyed by another, and elsewhere, wealth of my own I gave up.

iti saṃvyavahārehāḥ ke rāgadveṣayoḥ kramāḥ | dhanāni bandhavo mitraṃ punarāyānti yānti ca || 80 ||

So go the doings of everyday dealings, what are they but the workings of wanting and hating? Wealth, kinsmen, and friends come back again, and go away again.

kimeṣu naraḥ prājño rajyate vā virajyate | bhāvābhāvabhavābhogā māyeyaṁ pārameśvarī || 81 ||

Does a wise man become attached to these things, or turn away from them? This is the great illusion of the Supreme Lord, made of things existing, not existing, coming into being, and being enjoyed.

saṁsāraracanā sarvā saṁsaktaṁ pātayatyalam | na dhanaṁ na jano nātmā satyaṁ rāghava vastutaḥ || 82 ||

This whole design of the world brings down completely anyone who clings to it. Wealth is not real, people are not real, even the self is not real, Raghava, not truly, not in fact.

mithyaiava mithyāvasitamitīdaṁ parilakṣyate | ādyantayoḥ sarvamasantmadhye'pyasthiramādhi mat || 83 ||

This is clearly seen to be false, plainly false. At the start and at the end, all of it is unreal, and even in the middle, it is unsteady and full of pain.

kva bhagnāti ratiṁ prājño hyanyakalpitakhadrume | ekena kalpitā khe strī bhuṅkte tāṁ dūrago'paraḥ || 84 ||

Why would a wise man set his heart on a sky tree that someone else has merely imagined? One man imagines a woman in the sky, and another man, far away, enjoys her.

itīyamaṅga saṁsāraracanā tena mā bhrama | bhūtājavaṁ javībhāvamimamātatamākulam || 85 ||

So, dear one, is this design of the world, do not be misled by it. It holds the stillness and the movement of all beings, spread out everywhere, and full of turmoil.

gandharvapuranirmāṇavilāsena samaṃ viduḥ | svapnasankalpapuravadasadevedamutthitam || 86 ||

They know it to be just like the play of building a city in the sky. Like a city seen in a dream or shaped by imagination, this world has arisen wholly unreal.

sarvatra saṃsthamavedaṃ suṣuptamiva vicyutam | paripaśyasi saṃsāradīrghasvapnapuradrumam || 87 ||

This, though it stands everywhere, has slipped away like something in deep sleep. Now you see clearly, this world is a tree standing in the city of one long dream.

ajñānanidrāluṭhanasvabhāvātmakamacyutam | saṃsārasvapnasambhrānto bhavānayamiha sthitaḥ || 88 ||

By nature it tosses and turns in the sleep of ignorance, yet in truth it never changes. You, bewildered by this dream of the world, are standing right here caught in it.

tadenāṃ vitatāṃ nidrāṃ ghanājñānamayātmikām | tyajālakṣmīmivāvāptanidhānaḥ puruṣottamaḥ || 89 ||

So give up this vast sleep made of thick ignorance, just as a great man who has found a hidden treasure gives up misfortune.

prabodhamehi paśya svamātmānamuditaṃ sadā | nirvikalpaṃ cidābhāsaṃ prātaḥpadmaṃ raviṃ yathā || 90 ||

Wake up fully. See your own self, always risen, free of all division, the very shining of awareness, like the morning sun on the lotus.

prabudhyasva prabudhyasva punaḥpunarayaṃ mayāprabodhyase mahābāho paśyātmārkamanāmayam || 91 ||

Awake, awake! Again and again I am waking you, mighty armed one. See the sun of your own self, free from all affliction.

mayaitenābhivṛṣṭena śītena jñānavāriṇāsuśabdaśālinā rāma hyanenaivāsi bodhitaḥ || 92 ||

Rama, with this cool water of knowledge that I have poured down on you, carrying a lovely sound, you have indeed been awakened by this alone.

bodhamāsādaya paraṃ prabodho'dyaiva rāghavasatyamālokayālīkaṃ tyaktvemaṃ jāgataṃ bhramam || 93 ||

Reach the highest awakening. Let it happen today, Raghava. Give up this false delusion of the world, and see the truth.

You have no birth, you have no suffering, you have no faults, you have no delusions. Give up every wish and thought, and stay firmly settled in your own self.

parigalitavikalpadoṣajālastvamasi susārasuṣuptasaumyadṛṣṭiḥativitatamidaṃ suśuddhaye tvaṃ samupaśamātmani tiṣṭha he mahātman || 95 ||

You are one in whom the whole web of doubt and imagined ideas has melted away. Your vision is deep, still as dreamless sleep, gentle, and true to its very core. All that has been said here at such length is for your complete purification. Great soul, remain in the self that is utter peace.
