Sri Vasishtha said: Janaka stayed in his kingdom, busy with its affairs, but the fever in him was gone, and his mind stayed always calm within.
Your grandfather Dilipa was devoted to every undertaking, yet inside he was entirely free of attachment, and so he ruled the earth for a long time.
Manu was awake within, free of all stain, and he protected his people for a long time. Always in the shape of one who is free while still alive, he ruled his kingdom.
Bali sits on his throne in the underworld, ruling it as if that were all there was. Yet he is always letting go, always without attachment, and so he stands as one who is free while still alive.
Namuchi, the lord of the demons, was always locked in conflict with the gods. Amid all his many kinds of actions and thoughts, he never once burned with pain inside.
Shambara was given over entirely to magic, yet within he had risen up as one with it. Rama, this same Shambara let go of the great trick that is the world.
Agni, the mouth of all the gods, is caught up in the whole web of ritual acts, and for a long time he enjoys the riches of sacrifice. Yet even here, he remains free.
Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, even went to war with Chandra for the sake of his wife. Acting out this strange struggle in heaven, he still remained, in truth, free.
Brahma knows well how the world rushes about, how everyone hurries in distress, yet his mind never tires. Rama, staying even-minded, he spends this very long life of his in just this way.
Soma is drunk by all the gods, yet he stays one in taste throughout, and he never falls into attachment, just as the sky, even when it is overcast, is never touched by it.
Even though the three-eyed Shiva is free, he holds Gauri, the flowering branch of the tree of beauty, on half of his body, the way a lover holds his beloved.
Though he is free, the fair three-eyed Shiva is bound at the throat by Gauri. Yet he stays pure, like a string of pearls, spotless as a sliver of the moon.
Guha, deep of mind, a hero, fought the whole war against Taraka and the other demons. Though he was free, he did all of this, the one ocean holding the jewel of knowledge.
The sage Narada was free by nature. Yet he wandered through this stretch of wild forest that is the world, his mind cool and calm, busy doing his work.
Vishvamitra, this honored lord, has a mind that is free while he still lives. He carries out the rites of building the sacrifice exactly as the Vedas prescribe.
Shesha holds up the earth. The sun makes the days follow one another. Yama does the work of Yama. They do all this only because they are free while still alive.
There are others too, in these three worlds, spirits, demons, men, and gods. Hundreds of them have reached this same freedom, and still they remain within the round of birth and death.
They stay engaged in every kind of affair, following all sorts of strange customs. Some of them are cool and calm within. Others are simply deluded, like stones.
Some stay on in their kingdoms, sheltered under the royal umbrella and fanned with the royal fly-whisk, like Janaka, Sharyati, Mandhata, Sagara, and others like them.
Among creatures born as animals there are always some of ripe understanding. Among those born as gods too, there are the wise, and there are the foolish.
The law that the Ordainer sets is strange and wonderful. It moves slowly through endless beginnings. Because its parts are arranged in so many different ways, everything is seen everywhere.
The Ordainer is Fate. The Ordainer is the Creator, the Lord of all, Shiva, the Supreme Lord. By these names, people speak of our own Self, the awareness that faces inward.
Something real exists within the unreal, the way gold exists within sand. Something unreal exists within the real, the way dirt exists within grains of gold.
When you look closely with reasoning, even what does not fit can seem to fit. Rama, it is only fear of sin that makes people act rightly.
ye vajrasārāḥ sudṛḍhā dṛśyante te kṣayaṃ gatāḥ | kalpasyaante yathendvarkadharābdhivibudhādayaḥ || 40 ||
Even the things that seem as hard and solid as diamond come to an end, at the close of a cosmic age, like the moon, the sun, the earth, the ocean, and the gods.
Here, the unreal appears real, and the real too can appear unreal. Give up holding on to either belief or disbelief, and through this quickly reach calm evenness.
muktau rāghava loke'sminn prāptirasti sadaiva hi | pravṛttyā hi vivekasya vimuktā bhūtakoṭayaḥ || 44 ||
Raghava, in this world, freedom can always be reached where discernment is at work. Through this working of discernment, millions and millions of beings have become free.
Through discernment and its absence, freedom becomes either easy or hard to reach. Freedom comes when the mind is brought to an end, so kindle discernment.
People free of craving and free of clinging, liberated while still alive, with great wisdom, appear in this world again and again, like Suhotra and Janaka.
So you too, whose mind has grown calm and steady through dispassion and discernment, should live liberated while still alive, friend, seeing a lump of clay, a stone, and gold as all the same.
For beings that have a body, there are two kinds of freedom in this world, one while still in the body, the other after leaving the body. Listen to how the two differ.
Freedom is the peace of mind that comes from not clinging to things. For someone of flawless nature, this peace happens whether the body is there or gone.
yo jīvati gatasnehaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate | sasneha jīvito baddho mukta eva tṛtīyakaḥ || 52 ||
Whoever lives free of attachment is called liberated while alive. Whoever lives with attachment is bound. The one who is simply free after leaving the body is the third kind.
One should strive hard for freedom, and strive with the right method. For someone who lacks both effort and method, even a puddle the size of a cow's hoofprint becomes impossible to cross.
na tv anadhyavasāyasya duḥkhāya vipulātmane | ātmā paravaśaḥ kāryo mohamāśritya kevalam || 54 ||
But you of great soul must not let your self fall under another's control just by giving in to delusion. That only brings the sorrow of someone without resolve.
Hold on to great courage, and with a firm and steady mind, examine the self by means of the self, so as to reach the self's lasting mastery. For someone whose resolve reaches far, the whole world becomes as small as a cow's hoofprint.
The chief state that Sugata reached, the state by which a certain king left all instability behind, the highest state the great ones reached - that is the great fruit of the wish-granting tree of effort.
