15.36.1

prahlāda uvāca | ātmā sarvapadātītaścirātsaṃsmṛtimāgataḥ | diṣṭyā labdho'si bhagavannamastestu mahātmane || 1 ||

Prahlada said: The Self, which is beyond every state, has come back into my memory after a long time. By good luck I have found you, Lord; I bow to you, great soul.

abhivandyātha cālokya ciramāliṅgyase mayā | ko'nyaḥ syāttvadṛte bandhurbhagavannbhuvanatraye || 2 ||

Having bowed to you and looked at you, I hold you in a long embrace. Lord, who else could be my kinsman in the three worlds besides you?

haṃsi pāsi dadāsi tvaṃ stauṣi yāsi vivalgasi | ayaṃ prāptosi dṛṣṭosi kiṃ karosi kv gacchasi || 3 ||

You laugh, you protect, you give, you praise, you walk, you dance about. Now you are found, now you are seen — what are you doing, where are you going?

svasattāpūritāśeṣaviśva viśvajanīna bhoḥ | sarvatra lakṣyase nityamadhunā kv palāyase || 4 ||

You fill the whole universe with your own being, friend of the whole world. You are seen everywhere, always — where can you run away to now?

āvayorantaraṃ bhūri janmavyavahitāntaram | adūramadya saṃpannaṃ diṣṭyā dṛṣṭo'si bāndhava || 5 ||

The distance between us two was great, a distance kept apart by births. Today that distance is gone — by good luck I have seen you, my kinsman.

namaste kṛtakṛtyāya kartrē bhartṛē namōstu tē | namaḥ saṃsāravṛntāya nityāya vimalātmanē || 6 ||

I bow to you, who have done all that needed doing; I bow to you, the doer, the sustainer. I bow to the stem that holds up the whole world, to the eternal one, to the stainless self.

namaścakrājahastāya namascandrārdhadhāriṇē | namō vibudhanāthāya namastē padmajanmānē || 7 ||

I bow to you whose hand holds the discus, I bow to you who wears the crescent moon. I bow to the lord of the gods, I bow to you, the lotus-born.

vācyavācakadṛṣṭyaiva bhēdō yō'yamihaāvayōḥ | asatyā kalpanaiṣā vīcivīcyambhasōriva || 8 ||

The difference that seems to be between us here is only a matter of the word and its meaning. This is a false idea, like the difference between one wave and another, when both are only water.

tvamēvānantayānantavastuvaičitryarūpayā | bhāvābhāvavilāsinyā nityayaiēva vijṛmbhasē || 9 ||

It is you alone who, through your own endless power, spread out as all this. That power takes the form of the endless variety of things, its play is appearing and disappearing, and it never ends.

namō drṣṭrē namaḥ sraṣṭrē namō'nantavikāsinē | namaḥ sarvasvabhāvāya namastē sarvagātmanē || 10 ||

I bow to the seer, I bow to the creator, I bow to the one who unfolds without end. I bow to the one who is the nature of everything, I bow to you, the self that is present in all.

pratijanma ciraṃ bahvyo dīrghaduḥkhvatā mayā | tvayā mayopadiṣṭena dagdhenāpahataujasā || 11 ||

Birth after birth, for a long time, I suffered long. Though I was taught by you, I was burned, and my strength was destroyed.

ālokitā lokadṛśo dṛṣṭā dṛṣṭāntadṛṣṭayaḥ | na prāptastattvayā'nena kiṃcidāsāditaṃ bhavet || 12 ||

I saw the sights of this world, I saw the examples that were shown to teach me, but through none of it was truth ever attained; nothing was gained.

sarvaṃ mṛtkāṣṭhapāṣāṇavārimātramidaṃ jagat | nehāsti tvadṛte deva yatprāptau nābhivāñchati || 13 ||

This whole world is nothing but earth, wood, stone and water. Except for you, God, there is nothing here whose finding leaves nothing more to wish for.

devāyamadya labdho'si dṛṣṭo'syadhigato'si ca | saṃprāpto'si gṛhīto'si namaste'stu na muhyasi || 14 ||

God, today you are found, you are seen, you are known. You are fully reached, you are held — I bow to you, who are never confused.

yo'kṣṇoḥ kanīnikāraśmijālaprotavapuḥ sthitaḥ | deva darśanarūpeṇa kathaṃ so'tra na dṛśyate || 15 ||

You dwell woven into the very net of light in the pupils of the eyes. God, being sight itself, how can you not be seen?

yastvaksparśau spṛśansarvaṃ gandhaṃ tailaṃ tile yathā | sparśamantaḥkarotyeṣa sa kathaṃ nānubhūyate || 16 ||

You touch every touch felt on the skin, the way oil fills a sesame seed. You make the feeling happen inside — how can you not be felt?

yaḥ śabdaśravaṇādantaḥ śabdaśaktiṃ parāmṛśan | romāñcaṃ janayatyange sa dūrasthaḥ kathaṃ bhavet || 17 ||

When a sound is heard, you reach inside and take hold of the power in that sound, and you make the hair on the body stand up. How could you be far away?

Things that touch the tip of the tongue taste sweet right at the moment they are tasted — it is you who taste them. In whom are you not the one tasting?

With the nose as its hand, you take up the scent of flowers and take pleasure in what you sense of the body. In whose hand are you not present?

vedavedāntasiddhāntatarkapaurāṇagītibhiḥ | yo gītaḥ sa kathaṃ hyātmā vijñāto yāti vismṛtiṃ || 20 ||

The Self that is sung of in the words of the Vedas, the Vedanta, their final teachings, logic, and the Puranas — once known, how could it ever be forgotten?

saiveha dehabhogālī subhagāpīyamadya me | antarna svadate svacche tvayi dṛṣṭe parāvare || 21 ||

This same string of bodily pleasures, sweet as it is, no longer tastes sweet to me inside, now that I have seen you, the pure one, who are beyond everything and within everything.

tvayā vimaladīpena bhānuḥ prakaṭatāṃ gataḥ | tvayā śītatuṣāreṇa candraḥ śiśiratāṃ gataḥ || 22 ||

Through you, the spotless lamp, the sun has become bright. Through you, cool as frost, the moon has become cool.

tvayaita gurovaḥ śailāstvayaita dyucarā dhṛtāḥ | tvayaiveyaṃ dharā dhīrā tvayaivāmbaramambaram || 23 ||

Through you these heavy mountains stand. Through you these travellers of the sky are held in their place. Through you alone this steady earth stays firm. Through you alone the sky is the sky.

diṣṭyā mattāmasi prāpto diṣṭyā tvattāmahaṃ gataḥ | ahaṃ tvaṃ tvamahaṃ deva diṣṭyā bhedo'sti nāvayoḥ || 24 ||

By good luck you have become me, and by good luck I have become you. I am you, you are I, God — by good luck there is no difference between us.

ahaṃ tvaṃ itiśabdābhyāṃ paryāyābhyāṃ mahātmanaḥ | tava vā mama vā śākhā saṃyuktābhyāṃ namonamaḥ || 25 ||

The two words "I" and "you" are just two names for the one great Self, whether tied to the branch called yours or the branch called mine. I bow again and again.

namo mahyamanantāya nirahaṃkārarūpiṇe | namo mahyamarūpāya namaḥ samasamātmane || 26 ||

I bow to myself, the endless one, whose very form has no ego in it. I bow to myself, the formless one. I bow to the self that is the same in everyone.

mayyātmani same svacche sākṣibhūte nirākṛtau | dikkālādyanavacchinne svātmanyeveha tiṣṭhasi || 27 ||

In me, the Self — the same in all, clear, the witness, without shape, not bound by place or time or anything else — you stand there in your own self alone.

manaḥ prakṣobhamāyāti sphurantīndriyavṛttayaḥ | śaktirullasati sphārā prāṇāpānapravāhinī || 28 ||

The mind grows restless, and the movements of the senses begin to stir. The great power surges up, flowing as the breath that goes in and the breath that goes out.

vahanti dehayantrāṇi kṛṣṭānyāśāvaratrayā carmamāṃsāsthidigdhāni manaḥsārathimanti ca || 29 ||

The body is like a machine, dragged along by the rope of desire, covered in skin, flesh and bone, with the mind as its driver.

ayaṃ saṃvidvapurahaṃ na kācinnā kṛtāspadaḥ | dehaḥ patatu vōdetu yathābhimatayecchayā || 30 ||

I am this form of pure awareness. I am not anything at all; I have no fixed place. Let the body fall, or let it rise, just as it pleases.

cirādahamahaṃ jātaḥ svātmalābhaścirādayam | cirādupśama yāti kalpasyaante jagadyathā || 31 ||

Only after a long time did this sense of I-am-I arise in me. Only after a long time did I gain my own true self. And only after a long time does it come to rest, just as the world dissolves at the end of an age.

cirātsaṃsāragāmitvāddīrgha saṃsāravartmani | viśrānto'smiciraṃ śrāntaḥ kalpasyaanta ivānalaḥ || 32 ||

After a long journey through this world, on this long road of worldly life, I have grown tired through the long journey, and now I have come to rest, like a fire that dies down at the end of an age.

sarvātītāya sarvāya tubhyaṃ mahyaṃ namo namaḥ | tebhyo'pi ca namastestu ye māṃ tvāṃ pravadanti ca || 33 ||

Salutation, salutation to you, who are beyond everything and yet are everything, to you and to me. And salutation too to those who speak of me and of you.

akhilānantasaṃbhogā na spṛṣṭā doṣavṛttibhiḥ | jayatyakṛtasaṃrambhā sākṣitā paramātmanaḥ || 34 ||

The witness-nature of the highest self wins. Its joy is whole and without end, untouched by any fault, and never shaken by any struggle.

ātmanpuṣpa ivāmodo bhastrāpiṇḍa ivānilaḥ | tile tailamivāsmiṃstvaṃ sarvatra vapuṣi sthitaḥ || 35 ||

O Self, you are like the fragrance in a flower, like the air inside a bellows, like the oil inside a sesame seed. You are present everywhere in this body.

haṃsi pāsi dadāsi tvamavasphūrjasi valgasi | anahaṃkṛtirūpo'pi citreyam tava māyitā || 36 ||

You kill, you protect, you give, you roar out, you leap and play. Even though your true form has no sense of I, how strange is this power of illusion in you.

jayāmīśajvaladdīptiḥ sarvamunmīlayañjagat | jayāmyuparatārambho jagadbhūyo nimīlayan || 37 ||

I win, shining bright like a lord, opening up the whole world for all to see. I win again, all effort at rest, folding the world back in.

paramāṇostavaivāntaridaṃ saṃsāramanḍalam | vaṭatvaṃ vaṭadhānāyāṃ babhūvāsti bhaviṣyati || 38 ||

Inside a single speck of you lies this whole round world, just as the whole banyan tree lies inside a banyan seed. It was so, it is so, and it will be so.

hayadviparathākārairyadvatkhe dṛśyate'mbudaḥ | tadvadālokyase deva padārthśatavibhramaiḥ || 39 ||

Just as a cloud in the sky is seen taking the shape of horses, elephants and chariots, so too, God, you are seen through the changing shapes of a hundred different things.

bhāvānāṃ bhūribhaṅgānāmabhavāya bhavāya ca | bhava bhāvavimuktātmā bhāvābhāvabahiṣkṛtaḥ || 40 ||

For the sake of the rising and passing of these many things that keep breaking apart, be one whose self is free of all becoming, standing outside both being and not being.

jahi mānaṃ mahākopaṃ kāluṣyaṃ krūratāṃ tathā | na mahānto nimajjanti prākṛte guṇasaṃkaṭe || 41 ||

Give up pride, great anger, an impure mind, and cruelty too. Great people never sink into the trouble that comes from the qualities of matter.

prāktanīṃ dīrghadaurātmyadaśāṃ smṛtvā punaḥpunaḥ | kohaṃ kiṃ tadbabhūveti hasanmuktācchaṭāsitam || 42 ||

Remembering, again and again, his own long and deep-rooted wickedness of before, and asking, who am I, what was that, he laughs, his laughter shining white like a burst of pearls.

te prayātāḥ samārambhā gatāste dagdhavāsarāḥ | yeṣu cintānalajvālājālākīrṇo bhavānabhūt || 43 ||

Those undertakings are gone, those burning days have passed, the days in which you were caught in a net of flames from the fire of worry.

adya tvaṃ dehanagare rājā sphāramanorathaḥ | na duḥkhairgṛhyase nāpi sukhairvyoma karairiva || 44 ||

Today you are the king in the city of the body, your every wish fulfilled and vast. Sorrows do not grip you, nor do pleasures, just as rays of light do not touch the sky.

adyendriyaduraśvāṃśca jitvā jitamanogajaḥ | bhogārimabhito bhaṅktvāsāmrājyamadhitiṣṭhasi || 45 ||

Today, having tamed the wild horses of your senses and mastered the elephant of your mind, having broken the enemy of craving for pleasure on every side, you sit on the throne of your own kingdom.

apārāmbarapānthastvamajasrāstamayodayah | avabhāsakaro nityaṃ bahirantaśca bhāskarah || 46 ||

You are the traveler of the boundless sky, forever rising and setting, always giving light, a sun both outside and within.

sarvadaivāsi saṃsuptaḥ śaktyā saṃbodhyase vibho | bhogālokanalīlārthaṃ kāminyā kāmuko yathā || 47 ||

You are always asleep, Lord, and your own power wakes you up for the play of watching and enjoying the world, just as a lover is woken by his beloved.

dṛkṣudrābhirupānītaṃ dūrādrūpamadhu tvayā | pīyate svīkṛtaṃ śaktyā netravātāyanasthayā || 48 ||

The honey of beauty, carried from far away by the small rays of your sight, is drunk by you, taken in by your own power that sits at the window of the eye.

brahmāṇḍakoṭarādhvāntāḥ prāṇāpānaparais tvayā | gatāgatair brahmapure saṃprekṣyante pratikṣaṇam || 49 ||

Through the breath moving in and moving out, you look, moment by moment, into the dark hollows of the universe's egg, within the city of Brahma.

dehapuṣpe tvamāmodo dehendau tvamṛtāmṛtam | rasastvaṃ dehaviṭape śaityaṃ dehahime bhavān || 50 ||

In the flower of the body, you are its scent. In the moon of the body, you are its true nectar. In the tree of the body, you are its sap. In the frost of the body, you are its coolness.

tvayyasti vismayasnehaḥ śarīrakṣīrasarpiṣitvamantarasya dehasya dāruṇyagniriva sthitaḥ || 51 ||

In you lies the very heart of wonder. You are the ghee hidden inside the milk of the body. You stay deep inside the body, like fire hidden inside wood.

tvamevānuttamāsvādaḥ prākāśyaṃ tejasāmapiavagantā tvamarthānāṃ tvaṃ bhāsāmavabhāsakaḥ || 52 ||

You alone are the taste beyond every other taste. You are the brightness inside every bright thing. You are the one who knows all things. You are the light that lights up every light.

spandastvaṃ sarvavāyūnāṃ tvaṃ manohastino madaḥprajñānalaśikhāyāstvaṃ prākāśyaṃ taikṣṇyameva ca || 53 ||

You are the movement in every wind. You are the frenzy of the elephant that is the mind. You are the brightness and the sharpness of the flame of the fire of wisdom.

tvadvaśādiyamātmīyā vācā saṃpravilīyatedīpavatpunaranyatra samudeti kuto'pi sā || 54 ||

Because of your power, this sound of ours dies away the instant it is spoken, the way a lamp goes out; then, from somewhere, it rises again somewhere else.

tvayi saṃsāravartinyaḥ padārthāvalayastathākaṭakāṅgadakeyūrayuktayaḥ kanake yathā || 55 ||

The many things of this world, forever turning in the cycle of birth and death, exist within you, the way bangles, armbands, and bracelets all exist within gold.

bhavānayamayaṃ cāhaṃtvaṃśabdairevamādibhiḥ | svayamevātmanātmānaṃ līlārthaṃ stauṣi vakṣi ca || 56 ||

With words like 'you,' 'this,' 'I,' and 'you' again, you yourself, all alone, praise yourself and speak of yourself, just for play.

mandānilavinunno'bdo gajāśvanaradṛṣṭibhiḥ | yathā saṃlakṣyate vyomni tathā tvaṃ bhūtadṛṣṭibhiḥ || 57 ||

Just as a cloud pushed along by a soft wind is seen in the sky as an elephant, a horse, or a man, depending on who is looking, so you are seen differently through the eyes of each creature.

yathā hayagajākārairjvālā lasati vahniṣu | tathaivāvyatiriktaistvaṃ dṛśyase bhuvi sṛṣṭiṣu || 58 ||

Just as a flame in a fire flickers into the shape of a horse or an elephant, so you are seen in the creations of this earth, never separate from them.

tvaṃ brahmāṇḍakamuktānāmacchinnastanturātataḥ | kṣetraṃ tvaṃ bhūtasasyānāṃ cidrasāyanasevitam || 59 ||

You are the unbroken thread strung through the worlds like pearls on a string. You are the field where living beings grow like crops, watered by the nectar of consciousness.

asattadanabhivyaktaṃ padārthānāṃ prakāśyate | tvayā tattvaṃ yathā paktyā māṃsānāṃ svādavedanam || 60 ||

What is not shown is as good as not there. The true nature of things is revealed only by you, the way the taste of meat is known only once it is cooked.

vidyamānāpi vastuśrīrna sthitā tvayi na sthite | vanitārūpalāvaṇyasatteva gatacakṣuṣaḥ || 61 ||

Even if it truly exists, the beauty of a thing means nothing when you are not present, the way a woman's beauty and grace mean nothing to a man who has lost his eyes.

sadapīha na sattāyai vastu nāvarjitaṃ tvayā | tṛptaye na svalāvaṇyaṃ mukurātpratibimbitam || 62 ||

Something may exist here, but that existence is nothing unless you have laid hold of it, the way one's own beauty reflected in a mirror gives no satisfaction by itself.

luṭhati tvāṃ vinā dehaḥ kāṣṭhaloṣṭasamaḥ kṣitau | sannapyasannagocchrāyaḥ śyāmāsviva raviṃ vinā || 63 ||

Without you, the body rolls on the ground like a log of wood or a clump of earth. It exists, and yet, without the sun, it is as good as not existing, like the height of a mountain lost in the dark of night.

sukhaduḥkhakramaḥ prāpya bhavantaṃ parinaśyati | prākāśyamāsādya yathā tamastejo'thavā himam || 64 ||

The whole run of pleasure and pain, on reaching you, comes to a complete end, the way darkness, or the glow of a flame, or frost, vanish the moment sunlight arrives.

tvadālokanayaivaite sthitiṃ yānti sukhādayaḥ | sūryālokanayā prātarvarṇāḥ śuklādayo yathā || 65 ||

Pleasure and everything like it come to exist only through your light, the way colours like white appear only through the morning sunlight.

labdhātmāno vinaśyanti saṃbandhakṣaṇa eva te| te tamāṃsīva dīpasya dṛṣṭā eva vrajantyalam || 66 ||

The very instant they come into being, they perish, in that same moment of contact with you. They vanish completely the moment they are seen, like patches of darkness the instant a lamp is lit.

tamastā tamaso dīpāsattāyāṃ sphuṭatāṃ gatā| dīpasaṃbandhasamaye sā cotpadya vinaśyati || 67 ||

Darkness is darkness most clearly only when there is no lamp. The moment a lamp touches it, that darkness is born and dies in that very same instant.

tadevaṃ sukhaduḥkhaśrīrdṛṣṭvaiva tvāmanāmayam| jāyate jātamātraivaṃ sarvanāśena naśyati || 68 ||

In this way, pleasure and pain appear only when they catch sight of you, the flawless one, and the very instant they are born, they are completely destroyed.

bhaṅguratvādiha sthātuṃ kālaṃ nāṇumapi kṣamā| nimeṣalakṣabhāgākhyā tanvī kālakalā yathā || 69 ||

Because they are so fragile, they cannot last here even for an instant, like that tiny unit of time called a hundred-thousandth part of an eye-blink.

gāndharvī nagarī tanvī sukhaduḥkhādibhāvanā| sphurati tvatprasādena tvayi dṛṣṭe vilīyate || 70 ||

The feeling of pleasure, pain, and the rest is delicate, like a city in the sky. It flashes into being by your grace, and it melts away the moment you are truly seen.

tvadālokekṣaṇodbhūtā tvadālokekṣaṇakṣayā | mṛteva jātā jāteva mṛtā kenopalakṣyate || 71 ||

It is born from one glimpse of your light, and it dies from that very same glimpse of your light, born as if already dead, dead as if just born. Who can tell the two apart?

kṣaṇamapyasthiraṃ vastu kathaṃ kāryakaraṃ bhavet | taraṅgairutpalākārairmālā kathamavekṣyate || 72 ||

How can something that cannot stay still even for one moment actually get anything done? How could you ever see a garland made out of waves shaped like lotus flowers?

yadā vā jātanirnaṣṭaṃ kriyāṃ vastu kariṣyate | tadā rameta loko'yaṃ mālāṃ kṛtvā taḍidgaṇaiḥ || 73 ||

Or say a thing that dies the very instant it is born could somehow get something done. Then this world could well take pleasure in a garland made of flashes of lightning.

imāṃ sukhādikāṃ lakṣmīṃ vivekijanacetasi | sthitaḥ sanneva gṛhṇāsi na jahāsi samasthitim || 74 ||

You take hold of this treasure called pleasure while it sits in the heart of a person of understanding, and yet, even while doing so, you never lose your own steadiness, the same in everything.

avivekiṣu yo'si tvaṃ sahajātmanyadṛcchayā | tadrūpakathanenālaṃ mamānalpapadāspada || 75 ||

Among people without understanding, you exist only by chance, as their bare inborn self. Enough, for me, of describing that side of you, you who hold so vast a place.

nirīheṇa niraṃśena nirahaṃkṛtinā tvayā | satā vāpyasatā vāpi kartṛtvamurarīkṛtam || 76 ||

You have no desire, no parts, no sense of 'I' -- and yet, whether you are said to exist or not to exist, you have still taken on the role of the doer.

jaya proḍḍāmarākāra jaya śāntiparāyaṇa | jaya sarvāgamātīta jaya sarvāgamāspada || 77 ||

Hail to you, of wild, boundless form. Hail to you, given over only to peace. Hail to you, who are beyond every scripture. Hail to you, who are the ground of every scripture.

jaya jāta jayājāta jaya kṣata jayākṣata | jaya bhāva jayābhāva jaya jeya jayājaya || 78 ||

Hail to the born, hail to the unborn. Hail to the wounded, hail to the unwounded. Hail to being, hail to non-being. Hail to what can be won, hail to victory and to defeat both.

ullasāmyupaśāmyāmi tiṣṭhāmyadhigato'smi ca | jayī jayāya jīvāmi namo mahyaṃ namo'stu te || 79 ||

I shine, I grow quiet, I stand still, and I have reached what is to be reached. Victorious, I live only for victory. Hail to myself. Hail to you.

When you stand firm, and I too stand in my own true nature, free of all sickness, untouched by any tinge of passion -- then where is bondage? Where are misfortunes? Where is wealth? Where is coming to be and ceasing to be? I reach only a peace that lasts forever.
