The body is surrounded by mental pain and disease, and it is going to die anyway, maybe this very morning, maybe today. Foolish people work hard for the comfort of this body, but not for their own true self.
ye tu pāraṃ gatā buddher-indriyair-na vaśīkṛtāḥ | ta enāṃ jāgatīṃ māyāṃ paśyanti karabilvavat || 2 ||
But those who have gone beyond the intellect, whose senses do not control them, see this illusion of the waking world as clearly as a bel fruit held in the hand.
Seeing that this illusion of the waking world is worthless, a person who reflects deeply drops this illusion made of ego, just as a snake sheds its skin.
Having become free of attachment in this way, Rama, a person is not born again, like a seed burnt by fire, which even after lying a long time in the field never sprouts.
Sri Rama said, my lord, is this wheel of pleasant worldly life, like the story of Dashura, only a shape built by the imagination, with nothing real in it? Is that so?
Its borders were thick with grain fields, its towns were decorated with gardens, and the banks of all its rivers were full of lotuses, blue water lilies, and white water lilies.
The land echoed with the sweet songs of women swinging happily on swings in gardens, and its streets lay thick with flowers left over from the night before.
On that slope lived a man named Dashura. He was full of great austerity and yogic practice, he made his home at the top of a great kadamba tree, he was free of all desire, and he was very wise.
Son of a sage, you are very wise. Why then are you crying like someone who knows nothing? Why do you not understand that the true nature of this world is restless, always changing?
Good soul, in this world it is always this way. The round of birth and life is restless. One is born, then one lives, and afterward one must certainly die.
So do not grieve uselessly over your father's death. For one who is born, an end is bound to come, just as sunset is certain for the sun that has risen.
He got up and, out of respect for his father, performed the last rites that were needed. Then he made a firm decision to practice austerity, so as to reach the highest attainment.
Carrying out the duties of a Brahmin, practicing austerity in the forest, he became learned in the Veda, and this whole learning was built out of his own endless imagining.
But that learned man had still not truly grasped what was to be known. Try as he might in one way and another, his mind found no rest, even on that pure ground.
Then he thought, because I am the one making this offering, may the throats of the whole host of gods not be burned to ash from eating a Brahmin's flesh.
Thinking this, the lord Agni, the seven-flamed one, who was this boy's own deity, appeared before him, blazing with light, as radiant as the lord of speech.
He spoke a calm, steady word, granting the boy the boon he wished for. Take what has been given to you, good one, the way a jewel is taken out of an open case.

He was so pleased that the glow on his happy, satisfied face was full and bright, and with his gleaming white smile he seemed to outshine both the full moon with all its parts and the lotus in full bloom.
