Sri Rama said: Tell me, O Brahmin, how this world, being just as it looks, stands within the conscious self that is beyond the world, so that my understanding may grow again.
Sri Vasishtha said: Just as waves that have not yet shown themselves are already resting in the water, and are nothing other than the water, so this whole creation rests within the mind, and is nothing other than the mind.
Just as space goes everywhere but is not seen, because it is so fine, so consciousness, which has no parts, is not seen either, even though it too goes everywhere.
Just as something inside a gem can look as if it is firmly there and as if it is not there at all, neither fully real nor fully unreal, so this creation, within the self, is neither fully real nor fully unreal.
Just as clouds rest in the sky and stand on their own, yet never touch the sky, so this creation rests in consciousness and stands on consciousness, yet never touches the highest consciousness.
Just as light resting on water is seen reflected in that water, dear one, so consciousness, within bodies, is seen only in the subtle body made of eight parts.
This consciousness has no thought in it at all and no name in it at all, and it never comes to an end. Yet it is given names such as "that" and "the known," and others like these.
This consciousness is clearer than even a hundredth part of the sky. To those who truly know it, it looks like one whole thing, without parts. It sees that the world, whether it looks broken into many parts or looks like one whole, has one and the same nature.
Consciousness knows whatever it knows as consciousness itself, so this world rests within the self alone. Only in someone who does not understand this does the wrong idea arise: "something else has come, something else exists."
To those who do not understand, this consciousness looks as if it is carrying the whole harsh, unreal world inside itself. To those who understand, it is nothing but pure light, the one self within everything.
Through its own power to experience, it always lights up the sun and everything else like it. It is the one who tastes life in every creature, and it is the one who becomes the world for those who live out worldly life.
nāstameti na codeti nottiṣṭhati na tiṣṭhati | na cāyāti na vā yāti na ceha naca neha cit || 14 ||
Consciousness never sets and never rises. It never gets up and it never stays still. It never comes and it never goes. It is not confined here, and it is not missing from here either.
This same consciousness, completely free of any stain, rests all by itself within the self. In this way, Raghava, through this spreading-out, it unfolds itself under the name "world."
Just as light only shines as clusters of its own light, and water only flows as floods of its own water, so consciousness only stirs into motion through the illusion of the world it creates.
This same awareness is known by its own nature: it is called consciousness, present everywhere, its true self now arisen. It is known through what shows itself and through what does not show itself. It has no parts, yet it holds parts.
When this state of many-ness has grown, following the course of worldly wandering, it comes to rest at the point where being and non-being are taken up and let go.
puryaṣṭakaspandaśataiḥkaroti na karoti ca | utsedhameti bhūkośakoṭarastho'ṅkurotkaraḥ || 20 ||
Through hundreds of throbs of the subtle body, it acts and it does not act. A mass of sprouts, sitting hidden in the hollow of the earth's crust, rises upward.
The earth becomes solid, fire becomes visible, and the worlds gain steadiness. In stopping things and allowing things, time exists through its work of measuring.
Destiny, who makes things firm and exact, settles into a fixed state. Firm and unshaken, holding up the earth as her nature, she stands until the final dissolution.
This crowd of people comes, goes, and lingers a while, just out of mere play. It grabs too much for its own gain, and runs about through birth after birth and death after death. Making up its own ideas like a madman, driven by its own urges, this deluded, wretched crowd is helpless before death.
