Vasishtha said: These cycles of the world, though they look very fixed and solid all around, arise again and pass away again and again, simply from the nature of Brahman.
Just as deep, unfathomable water is still by itself but shows waves within it, in the same way this world, though not fully real and not fully unreal, is seen, and it is really nothing but consciousness.
Just as, because of the summer heat, rivers seem to appear in the empty, formless sky, in the same way these visions of creation are seen within the one reality of consciousness.
Just as a person, under the effect of intoxication, seems to themselves to be someone else, in the same way, because it is of the nature of consciousness, that same element of consciousness stands as if it were something else.
na cedaṃ sadasannedaṃ tatsthātatsthatayā citaḥnātiriktātiriktā ca kaṭakādiṣu hematā || 6 ||
This is neither fully real nor fully unreal, neither wholly this nor wholly not this, because consciousness both stays in it and does not stay in it. It is neither completely separate from it nor completely the same as it, the way goldness is in a bangle and other gold ornaments.
The pure self goes beyond both diversity and oneness, and it pervades everything. Because of that, no second thing exists there at all, anywhere, in any way.
Rama, it is someone who lacks true understanding who imagines all this: creations good and bad, existing and not existing, imagined to be either in what is not the self or in the self.
yasmādātmano vyatirikte vastuni siddhe sati tatrecchā pravartateyatra svātmano vyatiriktaṃ na kiṃcidapi saṃbhavati tatrātmā kimiva vāñchankimanusmarandhāvatu kimupaitu || 10 ||
Desire arises only where something is shown to be separate from oneself. But where nothing at all separate from one's own self is possible, what could the self want, what could it remember, and what could it run toward or move to reach?
ata idamīhitamidamanīhitamityātmānaṃ na spṛśanti vikalpāḥ | ato niricchatāyāmātmā na kiṃcidapi karoti kartṛkaraṇakarmaṇāmekatvāt na kvacittiṣṭhatyādhārādheyayorekatvāt naca niricchasyātmano naiṣkarmyamabhimatam dvitīyāyāḥ kalpanāyā abhāvāt || 11 ||
So ideas like this is wanted and this is not wanted do not touch the self at all. Because of this, when there is no desire, the self does nothing whatsoever, since the doer, the means, and the thing done are all one and the same. It does not stand anywhere either, since the container and the thing held inside are one and the same. And still, one should not think the desireless self is without action, because there is no second thing at all even to imagine.
Rama, you understand nothing other than this: that you yourself are this state of standing fixed in Brahman. So act as the doer, free from every pair of opposites, with your inner fever gone.
And another thing, Rama: doing this work of many kinds again and again in haste, what do you actually get from it? Tell me, what is fitting to gain once it is done? Instead, hold firmly to the idea that you are not the doer, and since you have gained this understanding, be settled, be clear, be still, like a windless sea.
Even by going very far, trying hard and moving fast, one cannot reach here the thing by which a person becomes fully complete. Knowing this, do not chase after the heap of objects with your mind. You are not the you that you think you are, in the highest truth you alone are the self that is consciousness.
