14.35.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | jayanti te mahāśūrāḥ sādhavo yairvinirjitam | avidyāmedurollāsaiḥ svamano viṣayonmukham || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Those great heroes, the good and wise, have won. They have beaten their own mind, which runs after the things of the senses, pushed on by urges full of ignorance.

saṃsārasyāsya duḥkhasya sarvopadravadāyinaḥ | upāya eka evāsti manasaḥ svasya nigrahaḥ || 2 ||

For this world of suffering, which brings every kind of trouble, there is only one remedy, controlling your own mind.

śrūyatāṃ jñānasarvasvaṃ śrutvā caivāvadhāryatām | bhogecchāmātrako bandhaḥstattāgo mokṣa ucyate || 3 ||

Listen to the whole essence of true knowledge, and once you have heard it, hold it firmly in mind. Bondage is nothing but the wish to enjoy things, and giving up that wish is called freedom.

kimanyaiḥ śāstrasaṃdarbhaiḥ kriyatāmidameva tu | yadyatsvādviha tatsarvaṃ dṛśyatāṃ viṣavahṇivat || 4 ||

What is the use of other scriptures and long discussions? Do just this one thing, see everything here, whatever it is, as if it were poison, as if it were fire.

viṣamā viṣayābhogāḥ pravicārya punaḥpunaḥ | upariṣṭātparityajya sevyamānāḥ sukhāvahāḥ || 5 ||

Pleasures of the senses are treacherous. Think them through again and again, and let go of them completely. After that, even when they come your way, they bring only happiness.

doṣānprasavati sphārānvāsanāvalitā matiḥ | kīrṇakaṇṭakabījā bhūḥ kaṇṭakaprasaraṃ yathā || 6 ||

A mind wrapped up in old desires gives birth to many faults, the way ground planted with thorn seeds grows into a spread of thorns.

alagnavāsanājālā matiḥ prasaravarjitā | adṛṣṭarāgadvēṣā yā śamameti śanaiḥ param || 7 ||

But a mind that is not caught in the net of old desires, that does not let them spread, that shows no liking or disliking, that mind slowly reaches the highest peace.

śubhāśubhānasadglānīnprasūte sugūṇānsadā | phaladānaṅkurānkāle śreṣṭhabījavatīva bhūḥ || 8 ||

That peaceful mind ends false, restless states that seem good or bad, and it always grows good qualities, like sprouts that will bear fruit in season, the way soil planted with the very best seed does.

śubhabhāvānusandhānātaprasanne manasi sthitē | śanaiḥ śanaiḥ praśānte ca mithyājñānaghanāmbudē || 9 ||

When the mind holds on to good thoughts and becomes clear and settled, and the thick cloud of wrong knowledge slowly, slowly grows calm,

vṛddhiṃ yāte ca saujanye yakṣe śukla ivōḍupē | viveke prasṛte puṇyē nabhasīvārkatejasi || 10 ||

and when kindness grows in it, the way the moon grows bigger in its bright half, and when clear understanding spreads out, the way sunlight fills the whole sky,

dhṛtāvantarvivṛddhāyāṃ muktāyāmiva kīcake | sthitāvantaḥ kṛtārthāyāṃ madhāviva niśākare || 11 ||

when inner strength grows within, like a pearl growing inside a bamboo stem, and when that strength, now complete, settles inside, like nectar inside the moon,

phalite śītalacchāye satsaṅgasaphaladrumē | sravatyānandasurasa samādhisaraladrumē || 12 ||

when the tree of good company bears fruit and gives cool shade, and this pine tree of deep meditation drips the sweet sap of joy,

mano bhavati nirdvandvaṃ niṣkāmaṃ nirupadravam | praśāntacāpalānarthaśokamohabhayāmāyam || 13 ||

then the mind becomes free of all opposites, free of wanting, free of trouble, its restlessness, misfortune, grief, confusion, fear, and sickness all calmed.

144.35.14

kṣīṇaśāstrārthasaṃdehaṃ vigatāśeṣakautukam | nirastakalpanājālaṃ mohamuktamalepakam || 14 ||

Its doubts about what the scriptures mean are gone. All its idle curiosity is gone. It throws off the whole web of fancy and imagination. It is free of confusion and stays unstained.

nirīhaṃ nirupākrośaṃ nirapekṣaṃ nirādhikam | saṃśāntaśokanīhāramasaktaṃ granthivarjitam || 15 ||

It wants nothing, blames no one, depends on nothing, carries no extra burden. The fog of its grief has completely cleared. It holds on to nothing, and it has no knots left inside.

sandehograsutaṃ sāgraṃ satṛṣṇādārapañjaram | nāśayitvā svamātmānaṃ sādhayatyarthamaiśvaram || 16 ||

It destroys its old self, which was the harsh child of doubt, full of excess, and shut inside the cage of craving and family ties. In this way it wins the greatest prize, mastery over itself.

ātmapīvaratāhetūnvikalpāṃścāyamujjhati | saṃsmṛtya prabhutāmeṣu jahāti tṛṇavattanum || 17 ||

It gives up all the thoughts that puff up the sense of self. Remembering that it is master over these thoughts, it drops the body the way one drops a blade of grass.

manaso'bhyudayo nāśo manonāśo mahodayah | jñamano nāśamabhyeti mano'jñasya vivardhate || 18 ||

When the mind rises up and grows strong, that is really its ruin. When the mind is destroyed, that is its true rise. In someone who knows the truth, the mind fades away. In someone who does not know it, the mind keeps growing.

manomātraṃ jagaccakraṃ manaḥ parvatamaṇḍalam | mano vyoma mano devo mano mitraṃ mano ripuḥ || 19 ||

This whole turning world is nothing but mind. The circle of mountains is mind. The sky is mind. A god is mind. A friend is mind. An enemy is mind.

vikalpakaluṣā yā syāccittatattvasyātmavismṛtiḥ | mana ityucyate seyaṃ vāsanā bhavabhāginī || 20 ||

When the true nature of awareness forgets itself, clouded over by thought after thought, that is what is called mind. This is the old impression that keeps a person tied to the round of birth and rebirth.

cetyānupātakalitacinmātre tiṣṭhatābhidham | manāgvivakalpakaluṣaṃ cittattvaṃ jīva ucyate || 21 ||

That same pure awareness, when it stays as pure awareness but touches, just a little, the things it can know, and gets a bit clouded with thought, that is what is called the living being.

224.35.22

cetyaprapatitaṃ rūḍhasaṃjñamajñatvamāgatam | tadevādhikanisāraṃ kalpyate'ntarmanastayā || 22 ||

That same awareness, once it falls into the world of things to be known, gets a fixed label, and turns into a kind of not knowing, that very thing, empty and worthless as it is, is what gets imagined as an inner mind.

nātmā saṃsāripuruṣo na śarīraṃ na śoṇitam | jaḍaṃ sarvaṃ śarīrādi dehī svavadalepakaḥ || 23 ||

The true self is not the person caught up in the world. It is not the body, and not the blood. The body and everything like it is lifeless matter. The one who lives in the body stays untouched, the way its own true nature always is.

śarīre kaṇaśaḥ kṛtte nāstyanyadrudhirādikāt | nirbhinne kadalīstambhe nāstyanyatpallavādṛte || 24 ||

When the body is cut apart bit by bit, there is nothing in it but blood and the rest. When a banana tree trunk is split open, there is nothing in it but layer after layer of leaf sheath.

mano jīvo naraṃ viddhi tadevākāramāgatam | ātmanātmānamādatte svavikalpātmakalpitam || 25 ||

Know that the man is nothing but the mind, the living self. It is this same mind that has come to take this shape. Through itself it takes hold of itself, made into itself by its own imagining.

svavikalpānnarastatra prasārya racayaty alam | jālamātmanibandhāya kośakārakṛmiryathā || 26 ||

Out of his own thoughts, the man spreads them out and weaves himself a whole net there, to tie himself up in it, just like the worm that spins its own cocoon.

imaṃ dehabhramaṃ tyaktvā deśakālāntare punaḥ | śarīratvamathādatte pallavatvamivāṅkuraḥ || 27 ||

Giving up this false idea of being this body, it takes on a body again in another place and time, the way a sprout grows on into a new shoot.

yādṛgvāsanametatsyāttamanastādṛkprajāyate | jātaṃ svapiti yaccittaṃ tatsvapne niśi tiṣṭhati || 28 ||

Whatever kind of impression this is, the mind that grows from it becomes just that kind. The mind that forms and then falls asleep carries that same nature into the dream at night.

amlaṃ madhurasāsiktaṃ madhuraṃ madhurañjitam | bījaṃ prativiṣākalpasiktaṃ ca kaṭu jāyate || 29 ||

A sour fruit soaked in sweet juice becomes sweet, coloured through with sweetness. A seed soaked with a paste of poison turns bitter.

śubhavāsanayā cetomahatyā jāyate mahat | bhavatīndramanorājya indratā svapnabhāṅgaraḥ || 30 ||

With a good impression, the mind becomes great through that same greatness. It comes to feel, in its own thought, like the kingdom of Indra. But being Indra is as fragile as a dream.

kṣudravāsanayā cetaḥkṣudratāmapi pelavām | piśācavibhramātsvapne piśācānniśi paśyati || 31 ||

With a mean, petty impression, the mind sinks into a weak and petty state. Out of a delusion about ghosts, it sees ghosts at night in its dreams.

sarasi sphāranairmalye kāluṣyaṃ yāti na sthitim | tathaiva sphārakāluṣye prasādo yāti na sthitim || 32 ||

In a lake, when the water is very clear, mud cannot settle and stay in it. In the same way, when the water is very muddy, clearness cannot settle and stay in it.

manasi sphārakāluṣye tadrūpaṃ jāyate phalam | tathaiva sphāranairmalye tadrūpaṃ jāyate phalam || 33 ||

When the mind is very murky, what comes from it is murky too. In the same way, when the mind is very clear, what comes from it is clear too.

tyajatyudārāṃ na gatiṃ kṣīṇo'pyaniśamuttamaḥ | udyogavānaviratam pūraṇāśāmivouḍupaḥ || 34 ||

Even when it has waned, the best does not give up its high course. It keeps striving without pause, holding to the hope of becoming full again, like the moon.

neha bandho na mokṣo'sti nābandho'sti na bandhatā | mithyotthitaiva māyeyamindrajālalatā yathā || 35 ||

Here there is no bondage and no freedom, no state free of bondage and no state of being bound. This is only an illusion that has arisen falsely, like a magician's illusion show.

gandharvanagarākārā mṛgatṛṣṇā ivottithā | dvicandravibhramābhāsā dvaitaikatvavivarjitā || 36 ||

It looks like a city in the sky, risen up like a mirage. It appears like the illusion of seeing two moons, and it is free of both twoness and oneness.

sarvaiva brahmasatteyamityeṣā paramārthatā | parisphurati niḥsāraḥ saṃsāro'yamasanmayaḥ || 37 ||

All this is nothing but the being of brahman, that is the highest truth. This world we see has no real substance in it, it is made of what is not real.

nānantohaṃ varāko'hamiti durniścayoditaḥ | ananto'smīśvaro'smīti niścayena vilīyate || 38 ||

The false belief "I am not infinite, I am a poor, small thing" is what creates bondage, and it dissolves through the sure knowledge "I am infinite, I am the Lord."

sarvage svātmani svacche eṣo'hamiti bhāvanā | etattadbandhanaṃ loke svavikalpopakalpitam || 39 ||

The self is present everywhere and is pure and clear, but the thought "this is me" fixes itself onto it. That is what bondage in this world really is, made up entirely by one's own imagining.

bandhamokṣadaśāhīnā dvitvaikatvavivarjitā | sarvaiva brahmasatteyamityeṣā paramārthatā || 40 ||

It has no state of bondage and no state of freedom, it is free of both twoness and oneness. All this is nothing but the being of brahman, that is the highest truth.

nairmalyaprāptamarṇamasaktaṃ sarvadṛṣṭiṣu| amanastvamihāpannaṃ brahma paśyati nānyathā || 41 ||

When the mind becomes so pure that it dies to itself, untouched by any view whatsoever, and reaches this state where mind itself is gone, only then does it see brahman, never otherwise.

mano nirmalatāṃ yātaṃ śubhasaṃtānavāribhiḥ| brāhmīṃ dṛṣṭimupādatte rāgaṃ śuklapato yathā || 42 ||

When the mind becomes pure through a steady stream of good thoughts, it takes on the vision of brahman, the way a white cloth takes on colour.

sarvameva mamātmeti sarvabhāvanayānagha| heyādeyabale kṣīṇe bandhamokṣo vimucyatām || 43 ||

Feeling in every way that all this is indeed my own self, o sinless one, when the strength of choosing "this to throw away, that to keep" has worn out, let go even of bondage and freedom.

śuddhasya manasaḥ kāyaśāstravairāgyabuddhibhiḥ| abhijātopalasyeva jagattasyeti vidyutiḥ || 44 ||

Through bodily discipline, the scriptures, dispassion, and understanding, the mind becomes pure, and then the world is seen as nothing but its own glow, the way the light glinting off a fine gem is not separate from the gem.

padārtheneikatāmetya manaso naikatānatā| asatyajñānadṛṣṭiṃ tāṃ viddhi kṣaṇavināśinīm || 45 ||

When the mind becomes one with some object, that is not real one-pointed absorption. Know it instead as a false view born of ignorance, one that falls apart in a moment.

sabāhyābhyantaraṃ tyaktvā sarvāṃ dṛśyadṛśaṃ yadā| manastiṣṭhati tallīnaṃ saṃprāptaṃ tatpadaṃ tadā || 46 ||

When the mind gives up completely, both outside and inside, all this seeing of things as separate objects, and comes to rest merged in that, then that highest state is reached.

dṛśyadṛṣṭiḥ sphuṭā yeyaṃ sā hyavaśyamasanmayī| tanmayatvaṃ ca manasaḥ svarūpaṃ viddhi netarat || 47 ||

This vivid vision of the world we see is bound to be unreal. Know that the mind's own nature is to be made of that same unreal stuff, and nothing else.

ādyantayorvināśitvānmadhye'pi tadasanmayam| ajñātamanasastena duḥkhitā hastasaṃsthitā || 48 ||

Since it dies out at both its start and its end, it must be unreal in the middle too. Because the mind does not know this, it stays sorrowful, even though the answer is right there in its own hand.

ātmaivedaṃ jagaditi vinā bhāvena duḥkhadā| dṛśyaśrīranyathā tveṣā bhogamokṣapradāyinī || 49 ||

Without the thought that this whole world is nothing but the self, this vision brings only sorrow. But with that thought, this same beauty of the visible world gives both enjoyment and freedom.

jalamanyattaraṅgo'nya iti nānātayā'jñatā| jalameva taraṅgo'yamityekatvātkila jñatā || 50 ||

To think water is one thing and the wave is another, seeing them as separate, is not knowing. To know that this wave is nothing but water, seeing them as one, is real knowing.

duḥkhamāyātyasaditi heyopādeyarūpi yat | tadabhāvena tu jñānādānantyamavaśiṣyate || 51 ||

Sorrow comes from what is unreal, from the habit of splitting everything into this must be rejected and this must be taken. When knowledge removes that habit, what remains is the endless, the infinite.

saṃkalpakalpitavācca manorūpamasanmayam | asanmayavināśetu kaḥ śoko vada rāghava || 52 ||

Because it is shaped only by the mind's own imagining, the mind's form is made of the unreal. So tell me, Rama, when something unreal is destroyed, what is there to grieve about?

avatsalo yathā bandhurarāgadveṣayā dhiyā | dṛśyate paśya tadvattvaṃ tattvaṃ pañjaramātmanaḥ || 53 ||

See this: just as one looks at an unloving relative with a mind free of love and hate, look at yourself in that same way. The truth is, you are nothing but a cage holding the self.

avatsalādyathā bandhoḥ sukhaduḥkhairna lipyate | tattvena saṃparijñānāttathā tattvacayātmanaḥ || 54 ||

Just as one is not touched by the joy or sorrow that comes through an unloving relative, so too, once the truth is fully known, one's real self is not touched by joy or sorrow.

tadanādi śivaṃ jñānaṃ yanmadhyaṃ draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ | tasmin satye manaḥ śāntaṃ pāṃsurvāyukṣaye yathā || 55 ||

That knowledge, without beginning and pure, is what lies between the one who sees and the thing seen. Resting in that truth, the mind grows still, like dust when the wind dies down.

upaśānte manovāyau dehapāṃsuḥ praśāmyati | punaḥ saṃsāranagare na nīhāraḥ pravartate || 56 ||

When the wind of the mind grows still, the dust of the body settles too. Then, in this city called worldly life, no fog rises up again.

vāsanāprāvṛṣi kṣīṇe saṃsthitau rāmamāgate | jāḍye janitahṛtkampe paṅke śoṣamupāgate || 57 ||

When the rainy season of desire has dried up, when steadiness has settled into Rama, when the numbness that once made the heart shake is gone, when the mud has fully dried away,

śuṣke tṛṣṇāvaṭe śānte mandē hṛdayakānanē | kṣīṇēṣvakṣakadambēṣu mithyājñānaghane kṣatē || 58 ||

When the banyan tree of craving has dried up and gone still, when the forest of the heart has grown quiet, when the crowd of the senses has thinned out, when the thick cloud of false knowledge has been torn open,

kṣīyatē mōhamihikā prabhāta iva śarvarī | kvāpi gacchati tajjāḍyaṃ viṣaṃ mantrahataṃ yathā || 59 ||

then the mist of delusion melts away, just as night fades at dawn. That numbness disappears somewhere, like poison destroyed by a spell.

dēhādrau na bhayakṣudrāḥ saritaḥ prasarantyalam | nōllasanti lasatpakṣāḥ saṃkalpōgrakalāpiṇaḥ || 60 ||

On the mountain of the body, the small streams of fear no longer flow. The fierce peacocks of imagination, with their shining tails, no longer dance.

parāṃ nirmalatāmeti saṃvidākāśagocaraḥ | rājate'titaraṃaccho jīvādityo mahodayaḥ || 61 ||

This sun of the living self, moving through the open sky of pure awareness, reaches the highest, spotless clarity, and shines out utterly clear, like a great and glorious rising.

ghanamohabharonmuktā viviktatvaṃ paraṃ gatāḥ | samaye hyatiśobhante dhautā āśā mahādiśaḥ || 62 ||

Freed from the heavy weight of thick delusion, and reaching the highest clarity, the great directions of the sky shine at their brightest in due season, washed clean.

bhṛśamābhāti vimalā muditākāśamañjarī | śītalīkṛtadikvakrā śaradvyomnīva candrikā || 63 ||

A spotless blossom of the joyful sky shines out brilliantly, cooling the whole curve of every direction, like moonlight in the autumn sky.

sarvasaṃpatprakāśena paramānandadāyinā | bhṛśaṃ saphalatāmeti suviviktā vivekabhūḥ || 64 ||

Shining with a light that holds every kind of wealth and gives the highest joy, the ground of true understanding, now fully clear and distinct, comes to full, rich fruit.

saparvatavanābhogaṃ paramālokasundaram | acchācchaṃ śītalacchāyaṃ jāyate bhuvanāntaram || 65 ||

A new world is born, one with its own mountains and forests, beautiful with the highest light, utterly clear, and cool with shade.

vistāritaṃ susumatāṃ sphāritaṃ sphaṭikākṛtim | upaiti hṛtsaraḥ svacchaṃ nīrajoṃbujakośakam || 66 ||

The lake of the heart grows wide and bright, spreads out clear as crystal, like a lotus bud born of water.

hṛtpadmakośānmali naḥ svāhaṃkāramadhuvrataḥ | apunardarśanāyaiva cañcalaḥ kvāpi gacchati || 67 ||

The bee that is one's own ego, soiled, flies out of the lotus bud of the heart. Restless, it goes off somewhere, never to be seen again.

bhavatyapagatākṣepaḥ sarvagaḥ sarvanāyakaḥ | nirvāsanaḥ śāntamanāḥ svadehanagareśvaraḥ || 68 ||

He becomes free of all disturbance, present everywhere, the lord of all, free of every hidden desire, and at peace in mind. He becomes the ruler of the city that is his own body.

vicāraṇāsamadhigatātmadīpako manasyalaṃ parigaliteva dhīradhīḥ | vilokayan kṣayabhavanīrasā gatīr gatajvaro vilasati dehapattanē || 69 ||

Through inquiry, he has fully lit the lamp of the self within. His once restless, firm intellect has, as it were, melted away completely into the mind. Watching the tasteless, decaying comings and goings of worldly life, free of all fever, he shines in joy in the city of the body.
