Sri Vasishtha said: So now, Rama of great wisdom, to wake you up I will tell you this, simply, so that what happened to Dama, Vyala, and Kata does not happen to you.
Because it follows a lack of good sense, the mind carelessly takes on trouble like this, and so brings upon itself endless suffering through birth after birth.
kva kilāmaravidhvaṃsiśambarānīkanāthatā | kva tāpataptajambālajālajarjarameenatā || 3 ||
Where indeed was that lordship over Shambara's army, the destroyer of the gods? And where, now, is this: a broken fish trapped in a mesh of mud scorched by heat.
kva nāma nirahaṅkāracitsattvodāradhīratā | kva mithyāvāsanāveśādahaṅkārakukalpanā || 5 ||
Where indeed was that noble, steady wisdom of a pure mind free of ego? And where is this: the ugly, false idea of 'I,' born from being seized by false impressions.
Dama, Vyala, and Kata, these three, were gripped by the ghost of ego. They were not real, yet through the power of illusion they came to exist, as titans.
śrīrāma uvāca | nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ | te hyasantḥ kathaṃ sattāṃ saṃpannā iti me vada || 11 ||
Sri Rama said: The unreal never comes to be, and the real never ceases to be. So tell me, how did Dama, Vyala, and Kata, unreal as they are, come to have real existence?
Sri Vasishtha said: It is just so, mighty-armed Rama. The unreal never comes into being, anywhere, at any time. Yet something small can indeed become huge.
śrīrāma uvāca | santa eva sthitāḥ santo brahmanvayamime kila | dāmādayastvasanto’pi vakṣi santaḥ sthitā iti || 14 ||
Sri Rama said: Real beings, Brahmin, stand as real, we ourselves for instance. But you say that Dama and the rest, though unreal, stood there as if real.
Your existence is false, and my existence is equally false. Even though it is experienced, it has no real form, like experiencing one's own death in a dream.
Just as a relative who has died, though experienced in a dream and felt as real, is still unreal, even when the thought comes, 'he is dead,' so too is this world.
For someone completely confused about this subject, this statement does not seem convincing. Through practice it becomes pleasant, but this does not deny that things are experienced.
A firm conviction that has taken deep root within, arising even without practice, once it exists, never perishes for anyone, in this world, at any time.
Whoever says, 'This world is unreal; Brahman alone is real,' at him, even a madman, however confused himself, laughs loudly, as if he too were mad.
akṣībakṣīvayoraiikyaṃ kva kilehājñatajjñayoḥ | andhaprakāśayorbodhe syācchāyātapayoriva || 22 ||
How, indeed, could there be any oneness between the blind and the seeing, between the ignorant and the knowing? In understanding, it would be like equating a blind man with light, or a shadow with sunshine.
Even with great effort, a thing that has already been experienced cannot be turned into a lie. Someone ignorant inside cannot manage this, just as one cannot truly conquer a corpse.
It is not right for an ignorant person to say, 'Brahman is everything, this world too is Brahman.' Only one who has gained that experience through discipline and knowledge has truly experienced it.
This talk of "I am" appears only where a person is not awake to the truth, Rama. In the one who is awake, there is truly no "I am" of that kind at all.
The wise person feels, "This is Brahman itself, the highest, the peaceful one" — so how could it ever be right for him to deny what he himself has felt?
Take away the highest reality, and there is nothing of "I" left in me at all. It is like gold and a ring made from it: the ring has no identity of its own apart from the gold, and I have no identity of my own apart from that highest reality.
Take away mere existence, and the confused person has nothing of his own left either. It is like gold and a ring made from it: for someone who truly understands, the ring's shape has no truth of its own — only the gold is real.
The confused person is made entirely of the false sense of "I." The wise person is made entirely of the one true self. To deny the true nature of either one is never right, in any case.
yo yanmayastasya tasminyujyate'pahnavaḥ katham | puruṣasya ghaṭo'smīti vākyamunmattameva hi || 30 ||
Whoever is made of a certain thing — how can it be right to deny that thing in him? If a person says, "I am a pot," that is simply the talk of a madman.
What is real is pure awareness, the stainless space of knowing. What is real reaches everywhere and is at peace — it exists without ever rising or setting.
sarvaṃ śāntaṃ ca niḥśūnyaṃ na kiṃcidiva saṃsthitam | tatra vyomni vibhāntīmā nijā bhāso'ṅga sṛṣṭayaḥ || 33 ||
Everything is at peace, and it is not empty — it stays there as if it were nothing at all. In that space, dear one, these creations shine as its own light.
Just as, for an eye with an eye-disease, its own natural sight shows things like floating hairs and specks, in the same way, these sights appear there.
As the self knows itself, so it experiences things at once. Because the space of consciousness sees in a certain way, even what is unreal becomes real through that seeing.
In the three worlds, there is neither "real" nor "unreal" as such — whatever consciousness knows, in whatever way, that arises exactly that way, without doubt.
Just as Dama and the others came to be that way, in the same way we too have come to be. Real or unreal — what does that matter here, dear one? The same uncertainty applies to them as well.
This space of consciousness is endless, reaches everywhere, and has no shape. However an awareness rises within it and moves on, that is exactly how it shines forth there, fully.
The name "world" has been given to the appearance of one's own dream. It belongs to the space of consciousness, whose very body is empty space — just as mirage-water belongs to the heat.
yatra prabuddhaṃ cidvyoma tatra dṛśyābhidhā kṛtā | yatra suptaṃ tu tenaiva tatra mokṣābhidhā kṛtā || 42 ||
Where the space of consciousness is awake, there it is given the name "the seen world." But where that same space is asleep, there it is given the name "liberation."
And that space is truly never asleep anywhere, nor is it ever awake. It is simply the space of consciousness — understand that the seen world is just this and nothing else.
Liberation itself is the glory of creation, and the glory of creation itself is liberation. Between these two words, there is no difference in meaning — they are like two names for the same thing.
na tatkeśoṇḍṛkaṃ kiñcit sā hi dṛṣṭistathā sthitā | nedaṃ dṛśyamidaṃ kiñciditthaṃ cidvyoma saṃsthitam || 46 ||
Those hairs and specks are nothing at all — it is just the eyesight standing that way. In the same way, this seen world is nothing at all — it is just the space of consciousness standing this way.
sarvatra sarvamidamasti yathānubhūtaṃ no kiñcana kvacidihāsti na cānubhūtam | śāntaṃ sadekamidamātatamitthaṃmāste saṃtyaktaśokabhayamedamatastvamāssv || 47 ||
Everywhere, all this exists exactly as it is experienced; nothing here exists anywhere that has not been experienced. This one, peaceful, existing reality spreads out and stays just so. So, let go of grief and fear over this, and rest at peace.
This, its own form — solid like the inside of a rock, utterly calm, belonging to the great consciousness, pure and clear — cannot rightly be called either existing or not existing. But whatever truly is, that alone is real, and that alone shines.
