14.2.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | athaitadabhyupagame vacmi vedyaavidāṃ vara | samastakalanātīte mahācidvyomni nirmale || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: accepting this, I will now speak, best of the knowers of what can be known, about that pure, great space of consciousness which is beyond all division.

jagadādyaṅkuras tatra yadyasti tadasau tadā | kairivodeti kathaya kāraṇaiḥ sahakāribhiḥ || 2 ||

If the first sprout of the world exists there, then tell me, by what causes and what helping conditions does it arise?

sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāve tvāṅkurodgatiḥ | vandhyākanyeva dṛṣṭeha na kadācana kenacit || 3 ||

But without helping causes, the world's sprouting is never seen by anyone here, just as the daughter of a barren woman is never seen.

sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāve yadyavoditam | mūlakāraṇamevāṅga tatsvabhāvasthitiṃ gatam || 4 ||

And if, without helping causes, it never arose at all, then, dear one, the root cause itself simply stayed in its own natural state.

sargādau sargarūpeṇa brahmaivātmani tiṣṭhati | yathāsthitamanākāraṃ kva janyajanakakramaḥ || 5 ||

At the start of creation, Brahman alone stays within itself, in the form of creation, remaining just as it is, without any shape. So where is there any order of a thing produced and a thing that produces it?

atha pṛthvyādayo'nye vā kecidatro'pakurvate | sahakārikāraṇatvaṃ tatpūrvaṃ cātra dūṣaṇam || 6 ||

Now suppose earth and the other elements, or something else, help out here as co-operating causes, that idea, as already shown, is itself the flaw in this.

tasmātpade jagacchāntamāste tatsahakāribhiḥ | cittātprasaratītyuktirvālasya na vipaścitaḥ || 7 ||

So the world, together with its so-called helping causes, remains still and at rest in that one state. To say it spreads out from the mind is something a child would say, not a wise person.

tasmādrāma jagannāsīnna cāsti na bhaviṣyati | cetanākāśamevāśu kacatītthamivātmani || 8 ||

Therefore, Rama, the world never existed, does not exist now, and will not exist later. It is only the space of consciousness that instantly shines like this within itself.

atyantābhāva evāsya jagato vidyate yadā | tadā brahmedamakhilamiti tadrāma nānyathā || 9 ||

When it is understood that this world has absolutely never existed at all, then all this is Brahman, that is so, Rama, and not otherwise.

pūrva pradhvaṃsanānyonyābhāvairyadupaśāmyati | na śāmyatyeva taccitte śāmyatyeva tu dṛśyate || 10 ||

Whatever seems to stop through not yet having arisen, through destruction, or through one thing simply not being another, none of that truly stops in consciousness. It only looks like it stops, when merely seen.

atyantābhāva evāsya bhāvairyadupaśāmyati | na śāmyatyeva saccitte kv śāmyatyeva dṛśyatā || 11 ||

Only the world's absolute non-existence is real. Whatever seems to stop because other things arise, does not truly stop in true consciousness, so how could the seen world itself ever really stop?

atyantābhāva evāto jagaddṛśyasya sarvathā | varjayitvetarā yuktirnāstyevānarthasaṃkṣaye || 12 ||

So the seen world's absolute non-existence, in every respect, is the truth. Leaving this aside, there is no other real way to end this harmful illusion.

cidākāśasya bodho'yaṃ jagadbhātīti yatsthitam | ayaṃ so'hamidaṃ nāhaṃ loke citrakathā yathā || 13 ||

This is simply the awareness of the space of consciousness, the fact that a world appears. Ideas like this is that, I, this, and not I are like a painted story in this world.

idamadyādi pṛthvyādi tathedaṃ vatsarādi ca | ayaṃ kalpaḥ kṣaṇaścāyamime maraṇajanmanī || 14 ||

This today and the rest, this earth and the rest, this year and the rest, this long age, this single instant, this dying, this being born.

ayaṃ kalpāntasaṃrambho mahākalpānta eṣa saḥ | ayaṃ sa sargaprārambho bhāvyabhāvakramastvāsau || 15 ||

This is the start of an age ending, that is the great dissolution of all ages, this is the beginning of creation, and that is the whole order of things coming to be and ceasing to be.

lakṣmāṇīmāni kalpānāmimā brahmāṇḍakoṭayaḥ | ete ceme parigatā ime bhūya upāgatāḥ || 16 ||

These are the signs by which the ages are marked, these are the tens of millions of universes. These ages have gone by, and these have come around again.

imāni dhiṣṇyajālāni deśakālakalā imāḥ | mahācitparamākāśamanāvṛtamanantakam || 17 ||

These are the webs of worlds, these are the divisions of place and time, and all of it is only the great consciousness, the highest space, open and endless.

yathāpūrvaṃ sthitaṃ śāntamityevaṃ kacati svayam | paramāṇusahasrāṃśubhāsa etā mahāciteḥ || 18 ||

Remaining just as it was before, at peace, it shines on its own. These appearances are like the light of a thousand rays streaming from tiny specks, all belonging to that great consciousness.

svayamantaścamatkāro yaḥ samudgīryate citā | tatsargabhānaṃ bhātīdamarūpaṃ natu bhittimat || 19 ||

The wonder that rises up on its own from within, thrown up by consciousness itself, that shining appearance of creation has no shape of its own. It does not rest on any solid support.

nodyanti na ca naśyanti nāyānti na ca yānti ca | mahāśilāsu lekhānāṃ sanniveśā ivācalāḥ || 20 ||

They do not rise up and they do not perish, they do not come and they do not go, like carvings set into a huge rock, unmoving.

ime sargāḥ prasphuranti svātmanātmani nirmale | nabhasīva nabhobhāgā nirākārā nirākṛtau || 21 ||

These creations flicker into view all by themselves, within the pure self, formless things within the formless, like patches of sky within the sky.

dravatvānīva toyasya spandā iva sadāgatau | āvartā iva cāmbhodherguṇino vā yathā guṇāḥ || 22 ||

Like the wetness that belongs to water, like the movement in the ever-blowing wind, like whirlpools in the ocean, or like qualities belonging to the thing that has them.

234.2.23

vijñānaghanamevaikamidamevamavasthitam | sodayāstamayārambhamanantaṃ śāntamātatam || 23 ||

All this is just one single, solid mass of awareness, existing in this way. Seeming to rise and set, it is still endless, at peace, and spread through everything.

sahakāryādihetūnāmabhāve śūnyato jagat | svayaṃbhūrjāyate ceti kilaunmattakaphūtkṛtam || 24 ||

To say the world is born all by itself out of nothingness, with no helping causes at all, that is really just the ranting of a madman.

praśāntasarvārthakalākalaṅko nirastaniḥśeṣavikalpatalpaḥ | cirāya vidrāvitadīrghanidro bhavābhayo bhūṣitabhūḥ prabuddhaḥ || 25 ||

Such a person is the truly awake one. Every trace of worldly concern in him has grown still, he has thrown away completely his whole bed of doubts and mental games, he has driven off, for good, his long sleep of ignorance, he has no fear left of this life, and he is the one who graces the earth.
