14.1.1

athottpattiprakaraṇādanantaramidaṃ śrṇu | sthitiprakaraṇaṃ rāma jñātaṃ nirvāṇakāri yat || 1 ||

Now, right after the chapter on how the world comes into being, listen to this: the chapter on how it goes on existing, Rama. Knowing this brings liberation.

evaṃ tāvadidaṃ viddhi dṛśyaṃ jagaditi sthitam | ahaṃ cetyādyanākāraṃ bhrāntimātramasanmayam || 2 ||

So, first understand this: this world that you see standing before you, and the sense of I and everything like it, none of this has any real shape. It is only an illusion, made of what does not exist.

akartṛkamaraṅgaṃ ca gagane citramutthitam | adraṣṭṛkaṃ cānubhavamanidraṃ svapnadarśanam || 3 ||

It is a picture with no painter and no canvas, rising in the open sky. It is an experience with no one to experience it, a dream seen without being asleep.

44.1.4

bhaviṣyatpuranirmāṇaṃ cittasaṃsthamivoditam | markaṭānalatāpāntamasadevārthasādhakam || 4 ||

It is like building a city that does not exist yet, something that rises as if it stood only in the mind. It dies down like the heat of a monkeys fire, and though it is made of nothing real, it still gets its work done.

brahmaṇyananyadanyābhamambvāvartavadāsthitam | sadrūmapi niḥśūnyaṃ tejaḥ sauramivāmbare || 5 ||

It is not different from Brahman, though it looks like something else, it stands the way a whirlpool stands in water. Though it has the shape of something real, it is not empty, like the suns light in the open sky.

ratnābhāpuṃjamiva khe dṛśyamānamabhittimat | gandharvāṇāṃ puramiva dṛśyaṃ nityamabhittimat || 6 ||

It appears in the sky like a heap of jewel light, with no wall behind it. It is seen there always, like the city of the Gandharvas, with no wall behind it either.

74.1.7

mṛgatṛṣṇāmbvivāsatyaṃ satyavatpratyayapradam | saṃkalpapuravatprauḍhamanubhūtamasanmayam || 7 ||

It is unreal, like the water of a mirage, yet it convinces you it is real, the way a true thing does. It is fully formed, like a city built only by imagination, and though you experience it, it is made of what does not exist.

84.1.8

kathārthapratibhānātma na kvacitsthitamasthitam | niḥsāramapyatīvāntaḥsāraṃ svapnācalopamam || 8 ||

Its nature is like the meaning inside a story, it stands nowhere at all, it has no fixed place. Though it has no real substance, it feels intensely solid from within, like a mountain seen in a dream.

94.1.9

bhūtākāśamivākārabhāsuram śūnyamātrakam | śaradabhramivāgrasthamalamakṣayamakṣatam || 9 ||

Like the empty space inside things, it shines with a shape, though it is nothing but emptiness. Like an autumn cloud standing right in front of you, it is, in truth, never destroyed and never broken.

varṇo vyomamalasyeva dṛśyamānamavastukam | svapnāṅganāratākāramarthaniṣṭhamanarthakam || 10 ||

It is like a color that seems to appear on the sky, though the sky is clean and has nothing on it, you can see it, but it is not a real thing. It is like making love to a woman in a dream, it feels like it means something, but it means nothing at all.

114.1.11

citrodyānamivotphullamarasaṃ sarasākṛti | prakāśamapi nistejaścitrārkānalavatsthitam || 11 ||

It is like a garden in a painting, in full bloom, yet with no juice or life in it, though it has the shape of something fresh and full of sap. It shines, yet it has no heat in it, like the sun and the fire painted in a picture.

anubhūtaṃ manorājyamivāsatyamavāstavam | citrapadmākara iva sārasaugandhyavarjitam || 12 ||

It is experienced, yet it is untrue and unreal, like a kingdom built only in the mind. It is like a painted lotus pond, without any real substance or fragrance in it.

śūnye prakacitaṃ nānāvarṇamākāritātmakam | apiṇḍagrahamāśūnyamindracāpamivotthitam || 13 ||

It shines out in emptiness, showing many colors, its whole being nothing but an appearance with no substance behind it. It cannot be grasped as a solid thing, it is completely without substance, yet it rises up like a rainbow.

parāmarśena śuṣyadbhirbhūtapelavapallavaiḥ | kṛtaṃ jaḍamasārātma kadalīstambhabhāsuram || 14 ||

It is made of the tender, withering young shoots of created things, fragile at the slightest touch. It is dull, with no real substance in it, shining only like the trunk of a banana tree.

154.1.15

sphuritekṣaṇadṛṣṭāndhakāracakravartanam | atyantamabhavadrūpamapi pratyakṣavatsthitam || 15 ||

It is like the wheel of darkness you see turning when your eye trembles or flutters. Even though such a thing has never really come into being at all, it stands right there in front of you as if you could touch it.

vārbudbudamivābhogi śūnyamantaḥsphuradvapuḥrasātmakaṃ cāpyarasamavicchinnakṣayodayam || 16 ||

It is like a bubble on water, it looks full and round, but is empty inside, its body flickering within. It seems to be full of essence, yet it has no essence at all, it keeps rising and dying away without a break.

nīhāra iva vistāri gṛhītaṃ sanna kiṃcana jaḍaśūnyāspadaṃ śūnyaṃ keṣāṃcitparamāṇuvat || 17 ||

It spreads out like fog, it seems like something you can grasp, but it turns out to be nothing at all. It is the home of a dull emptiness, to some it is like a mere atom, empty.

kiṃcidbhūtamayo'smīti sthitaṃ śūnyamabhūtakamgṛhyamāṇo'pyasadrūpo niśācara ivāsthitam || 18 ||

It stands there thinking, I am made of something real, yet it is empty, it is not a real thing at all. Even while you can feel it right there, its form is untrue, it stands just like a demon that walks at night.

śrīrāma uvācamahākalpakṣaye dṛśyamāste bīja ivāṅkuraḥpare bhūya udetyetattata eveti kiṃ vada || 19 ||

Sri Rama said: When the great cosmic age ends, the world we see remains within the Supreme, the way a sprout stays inside a seed. Later it rises again from that very same source. Tell me, what does this mean?

evaṃ bodhāḥ kimajñāḥ syuruta jñā iti ca sphuṭamyathāvadbhagavanbrūhi sarvasaṃśayaśāntaye || 20 ||

So tell me clearly, are these knowing beings ignorant, or are they wise? Please, Lord, tell me exactly as it is, so that all my doubts are put to rest.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | idaṃ bīje'ṅkura iva dṛśyamāste mahāśaye | brūte ya evamajñatvametattasyāsti śaiśavam || 21 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: This visible world stays within the great being, the way a sprout stays inside a seed. Whoever says this and takes it as the plain truth, that itself shows he is still a child in understanding.

śṛṇvetatkimasaṃbandhaṃ kathametadavāstavam | viparīto bodha eṣa vaktuḥ śrotuśca mohakṛt || 22 ||

Listen to this: how is this comparison without a real connection, how is it not true to fact? This backward understanding confuses both the one who says it and the one who hears it.

bīje kilāṅkura iva jagadāsta itīha yā | buddhiḥ sā satpralāpārthaṃ mūḍhā śṛṇu kathaṃ kil || 23 ||

The idea that the world sits inside a seed the way a sprout does, that idea is spoken only as a manner of speaking. If someone takes it as the literal truth, it is a foolish idea. Listen, and I will show you how.

bījaṃ bhavetsvayaṃ dṛśyaṃ cittādīndriyagocaram | yavadhānādidhānyāni yuktaḥ patrāṅkurodbhavaḥ || 24 ||

A real seed is itself something we can see, something the mind and the senses can reach, like grains of barley or paddy. From such grains, the sprouting of a leaf and a shoot rightly follows.

manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyātītaṃ yatsyādatitarāmaṇu | bījaṃ tadbhavituṃ śaktaṃ svayaṃbhūrjagatāṃ katham || 25 ||

But that which is beyond the mind and the five senses, and is said to be finer than the finest, how could that be able to act as a seed? How can something so different from a seed be called the self-born source of all the worlds?

ākāśādapi sūkṣmasya parasya paramātmanaḥ | sarvākhyānupalambhasya kīdṛśī bījatā katham || 26 ||

The highest Self is finer even than empty space, and it cannot be grasped or named by anything at all. What kind of seed-nature could such a thing have? How?

tatsūkṣmamasadābhāsamasadeva hyatādṛśam | kīdṛśī bījatā tatra bījābhāve kuto'ṅkuraḥ || 27 ||

That subtle reality only looks like something that does not exist, it is truly unlike anything else, and not a solid thing itself. So what kind of seed-nature could it have there? And if there is no seed, where could a sprout come from?

gaganāṅgādapi svacche śūnye tatra pare pade | kathaṃ santi jagannmerusamudragaganādayaḥ || 28 ||

In that highest state, which is clear and empty, finer even than the substance of the sky, how can the world, Mount Meru, the oceans, the sky, and everything else exist there?

na kiṃcidyatkathaṃ kiṃcittatrāste vastu vastuni | asti cet tatkathaṃ tatra vidyamānaṃ na dṛśyate || 29 ||

That which is nothing at all, how can any object exist inside it, one thing inside another thing? And if it really does exist there, then why, though it exists, is it not seen?

na kiṃcidātmanaḥ kiṃcikathameti kuto'thavā | śūnyarūpāddhaṭākāśājjāto'driḥ kva kutaḥ kadā || 30 ||

Nothing can turn into something on its own, so how, and from where, could it arise? Has a mountain ever been born from the empty space closed inside a pot? Where, from where, and when has that happened?

pratipakṣe kathaṃ kiṃcidāste cchāyātape yathā | kathamāste tamo bhānau kathamāste himo'nale || 31 ||

How can anything exist inside its own opposite? Just as shade cannot exist inside sunlight, how can darkness exist inside the sun, and how can frost exist inside fire?

meruraāste kathamaṇau kutaḥ kiṃcidanākṛtau | tadatadrūpayoraikyaṃ kva cchāyātapayoriva || 32 ||

How can Mount Meru exist inside an atom? How can anything with a shape exist inside what has no shape at all? Where can a thing and its very opposite ever become one, just as shade and sunlight never do?

sākāravataḍhānādāvṅkurāḥ santi yuktimat | nākāre tanmahākāraṃ jagadastītyayuktikam || 33 ||

In things that have a shape, like a banyan seed or a grain, sprouts reasonably come up. But to say that this vast, shaped world exists inside something that has no shape at all, that makes no sense.

deśāntare yacca narāntare ca buddhyādisarvendriyaśakti dṛśyam | nāstyeva tattadvidhabuddhibodhe na kiṃcidityeva taducyate ca || 34 ||

A thing that is seen through the power of the mind and the senses, in one place and by one person, does not exist at all in the same way for the understanding of another place or another person. This, having no existence apart from one particular mind, is exactly what we call nothing.

kāryasya tatkāraṇatāṃ prayātaṃ vaktīti yastasya vimūḍhabodhaḥ | kairnāma tatkāryamudeti tasmātsvaiḥ kāraṇādyaiḥ sahakārirūpaiḥ || 35 ||

Whoever says that an effect simply comes from being caused by that one thing, his understanding is entirely confused. After all, an effect only arises from a cause together with its own other causes and the many supporting conditions that work along with it.

durbuddhibhiḥ kāraṇakāryabhāvaṃ saṃkalpitaṃ dūratare vyudasya | tadeva tatsatyamanādimadhyaṃ jagattadetatsthitamityavehi || 36 ||

So set aside, far away, this whole idea of cause and effect, it is only something foolish minds have imagined. Know instead that the one truth, which has no beginning and no middle, is itself what stands here as this world.
