Vasishtha said: Brahma, the lord born from the lotus, had said this to me. Then, O best of the Raghus, I asked that lord of beings again, taking up his own words.
yathaitau pavanaspandau yathā snehatilau yathā | abhinnautadvadevaitau manodehau sa eva tat || 4 ||
As the wind and its movement are not two different things, as oil and the sesame seed are not two different things, in the same way mind and body are not different from each other; the one is the other.
Or else, the body does not exist here at all; it is the mind alone. It is felt in vain, like a dream, like a mirage, like a second moon seen by mistake.
When one of the two is destroyed, it follows that both are destroyed. When the mind is destroyed, the wasting away of the body must necessarily happen.
It is almost mute, powerless, wretched, perishable in a moment, as unsteady as a drop of water on a lotus leaf, its state helpless before fate and the like.
This second body, called the mind, belongs to embodied beings here. Though it seems ruled by other things, it is actually not ruled by them, among creatures in the three worlds.
puruṣātiśayaḥ sarvaḥ sarvabhāvopamardane | dadātyavighnena phalaṃ mano hi manaso mune || 19 ||
O sage, in overcoming every condition, all of a man's excellence comes to this: it is the mind alone that, without any obstacle, gives its fruit to the mind.
By the strength of his own effort, having made the mind within full of what was dear to him, through an artificial Indra, not even the slightest pain of suffering was seen.
Having made the mind, through his own effort, free from passion and free from anguish, Mandavya conquered all afflictions even while he stood impaled on a stake.
ye cāpi khaṇḍitāḥ kecicchāpādyairādhisāyakaiḥ| svavivekākṣamaṃ teṣāṃ mano manye vipauruṣam || 26 ||
And whoever's mind is broken by such things, by curses and other arrows of mental pain, I consider their mind, unable to use its own good sense, to be weak and unmanly.
In this world, no one is ever even a little watchful in mind; whether in a dream or in the waking world one sees, he gets caught and made worthless by the web of his own faults.
Therefore, in this world, a man should control his mind by his mind alone, through his own effort; let him, by his own effort alone, set his own mind upon the pure path.
By mere fixed attention, the mind can see night even in the disc of the sun, just as a person with a faulty eye sees two moons in the disc of the moon.
In the same way, the instant such an idea appears, the mind sees an elixir even in a caustic liquid, and after drinking it feels utterly content, leaps about, and dances.
pratibhānupadaṃ ceto vyomanyapi mahāvanam | dṛṣṭvā lunāti lūtvā ca punarāropayaty alam || 36 ||
In the same way, the instant such an idea appears, the mind sees a great forest even in the empty sky, cuts it down, and after cutting it, plants it right back again.
In this way, dear one, whatever magic show the mind conjures up, that very thing it soon sees fully before it. Knowing for certain that the world is neither unreal nor real, give up this fragmented way of seeing, which holds so many divisions.
