bhānuruvāca tenaitadvacmi bhavaganyathākālaṃ mano mune anigrāhyamabhedyaṃ ca śāpairapi durāsadaiḥ || 1 ||
The Sun said: So I say this to you, lord. The mind, sage, is beyond time. It cannot be seized, and it cannot be broken even by curses that are hard to overcome.
mano hi jagatāṃ kartṛ mano hi puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ | yanmanoniścayakṛtaṃ taddravyauṣadhidanḍanaiḥ || 4 ||
Mind alone is the maker of the worlds. Mind alone is called the person. What the mind has firmly decided cannot be undone by any substance, medicine, or punishment.
It cannot be destroyed, just as the reflection of a creature in a jewel cannot be destroyed by killing the creature. So let these beings stay here, in their bright whirl of creation.
Having created your people here, stay at ease. The space of intellect is endless. The space of mind, the space of consciousness, and ordinary space is the third.
Stay in yourself by your own will. What is it to you, taken from the moon-beings? Brahma said: Then, when the Sun had said all this about the web of the moon-world,
Just as those moon-beings, through their wondrous variety, reached the state of Brahma, so we too, through the nature of consciousness, through being mind, have reached the state of Brahma.
Mind is nothing but appearance, and that appearing is the mind itself. So this that shines as the body and so on is only one's own inner self; there is no other seer of the body.
This, shining like the mind, is called by the name 'the subtle travelling body'. That very thing is also called, by the name 'the body', a solid illusion.
This mind, carrying its thin traces of desire, is called by the name 'the living self'. Know the living self, once the wonder of the body has grown still, as the highest, step by step.
'I am not, and nothing else exists here.' Yet this wondrous mind stands. Vasishtha, it has come to an existence that is really non-existence, like the awareness of the moon-beings.
Just as the false second moon is nothing but the one real moon, so this I that I seem to be is nothing but that same Brahman. This world made by the mind is myself alone; it only shows up as a thought, an idea in the mind.
This is just some play of the mind, I, Brahman, exist right here as this. Know that the body and everything else is only its own nature, born out of the self that is like empty space itself.
By imagining pure consciousness, the one highest truth, to be this and that, the soul turns into mind and then wrongly believes itself to be a body, all for nothing.
All this world, appearing like the illusion of a moon that is not really there, is really just the body of consciousness. It is a long dream, produced by consciousness's own power, whose true self is discovered only in full wakefulness.
Everything takes the shape of the double-moon illusion, starting from the mere appearance of the subtle elements, and stays fixed like that false moon in the sky, all of it comes from the mind alone.
na sannāsadahamrūpaṃ sattāsatte tadeva ca | upalambhena sadrūpamasatyaṃ tadvirodhatḥ || 30 ||
The I is neither purely real nor purely unreal; it is itself the very ground of both existing and not existing. Because it is experienced, it seems real, but it is not true, since it contradicts itself.
Know that the mind is both conscious and unconscious. It is made of thought and imagination, vast in its reach. It is conscious because it is really Brahman itself; it is unconscious to the extent it becomes a seen object.
dṛśyānubhavasatyātma na sadbhāve vilāsi tat | kaṭakatvaṃ yathā hemni tathā brahmaṇi saṃsthitam || 32 ||
The mind is real only as an experience of things seen; it has no real existence in true being. Just as being a bracelet exists only in gold, so this mind exists resting in Brahman.
sarvatvādbrahmaṇaḥ sarvaṃ jaḍaṃ cinmayabheva ca | asmadādiśilāntātma na jaḍaṃ na ca cetanam || 33 ||
Since Brahman is everything, everything, even what looks inert, is really made of consciousness. So everything from us down to a stone is, in itself, neither purely inert nor purely conscious.
Since wood and things like it have no consciousness, they cannot perceive anything. Perception can only arise through a connection between like and like.
upalabdhe'jaḍaṃ viddhi tenedaṃ sarvameva hi | upalambho hi sadṛśasambandhātsyātsamātmanoḥ || 35 ||
Know that wherever something is perceived, consciousness is present there too, so all of this is indeed conscious. For perception can only happen through a connection between things of the same nature.
Words like inert and conscious have no real meaning of their own, that state cannot be described in words, just as there are no leaves or vines in a vast desert.
When consciousness grasps something as an object, that is called being mind. In this, the conscious part is the awake, living part; the object part, the part that is known, is the inert part.
The conscious part here is the portion that is aware; what is perceived is seen as inert matter. Seeing the world this way, as an illusion, the soul becomes restless and unsteady.
cittasya eva bhāvo'sau śuddha eva dvividhā kṛtaḥ | ataḥ sarvaṃ jagatsaiva dvaitalabdhaṃ ca saiva tat || 39 ||
This is just a state of the mind, something purely one that has been split into two. So the whole world is nothing but that one consciousness, and even the sense of duality we get is also that same one thing.
Seeing itself as something other than itself, consciousness takes on a body as the thing seen. Though it has no parts at all, it wanders about like someone confused, seeming as if split into parts.
na bhrāntirasti bhramabhāṅgā naivetīha niścayaḥparipūrṇārṇavaprakhyāvetītthaṃ saṃsthitā citiḥ || 41 ||
There is no delusion, nor is it settled that the delusion has been broken, that is not a fixed certainty either. Consciousness stands as it is, resembling a completely full ocean.
sarvaṃ syājjāḍyamapyasyāścitiścittvaṃ ca vetsi tatcidbhāgoṃśo'vabodhasya tvahaṃtājaḍatodayaḥ || 42 ||
Everything may seem inert, yet all of it is really this same consciousness, and you call that mind. The conscious part is the share of pure awareness; but the sense of I is where dullness, inertness, arises.
ahaṃtādipare tattve manāgapi na vidyateūrmyādīva pṛthaktoye saṃvitsāraṃ hi tadyataḥ || 43 ||
In the highest reality, I-ness and things like it do not exist even slightly on their own, just as waves do not exist apart from water, because their very essence is nothing but consciousness.
ahaṃpratyayasaṃdṛśyaṃ cetyaṃ viddhi samutthitammṛgatṛṣṇāmbvivāntasthaṃ nūnaṃ vidyata eva no || 44 ||
Know that whatever is seen through the notion of I has merely arisen as an appearance, like the water in a mirage, it certainly does not truly exist at all.
Know that the state called I is really the state of the innermost self, free of all trouble. Those who know say that I-ness is like coldness in snow, the two cannot be separated.
The mind itself experiences dullness, much like dreaming of one's own death. Because consciousness is the self of everything and carries out every power there is, it can never be reduced to sameness with any one thing.
The mind spreads itself out into every form, starting with becoming objects and things. This world of many separate beings, seeming like inert bodies, in truth has a shape as clear and empty as the open sky.
One who exists should give up identifying with this body and its mere appearance. That very mind, which is only an appearance, must be examined by the mind itself, by oneself.
yadvidyatē śōdhyatē tadbōdhaḥ kē ca khapādapāḥ | dēhādyavidyā satyā cēdyukta ētāṃ prati grahaḥ || 50 ||
Only what truly exists can be purified, and that is real understanding. What are trees growing in the sky? They do not exist, so there is nothing to purify in them. If the ignorance that makes us think we are the body and so on were real, then holding on to it would make sense.
asatyaviniviṣṭānāṃ dehavācitayā tv iha| ye nāmopadiśantyajñāḥ kiṃcitte puruṣaiḍakāḥ || 51 ||
Those ignorant people who are stuck on things that are not real, and who teach anything at all just by calling it "the body," are nothing but sheep in the shape of men.
Whatever the mind pictures within itself, that becomes true in that very instant. The example here is the firm belief created about the moon, about Ahalya, and about the false Indra and such.
yadyadyathā sphurati supratibhātmacittaṃ tattattathā bhavati dehatayoditātma| deho'yamasti na na cāhamiti svarūpaṃ vijñānamekamavagamya niricchamāssva || 53 ||
Whatever the shining, aware mind pictures, and in whatever way, that is exactly what comes about, appearing as a self inside a body. "This body exists," "it does not," "I am not this" — all these are just forms taken by that one awareness. Once you understand it as a single awareness, remain free of wanting anything.
deho'yameṣa ca kilāyamiti svabhāvāddeho'yametadakhilaṃ tata eti nāśam| yakṣādikalpanavashādbhayameti bālo niryakṣadehagata eva kayāpi yuktyā || 54 ||
The thought "this is a body, yes, this is a body" arises simply out of habit. This whole body, and everything built on it, ends in destruction. In the same way, a child becomes afraid by imagining a ghost, and through some odd reasoning feels that fear even in a place where there is no ghost at all.
