śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | taccittāstadgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam | kathayantaśca tannityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: With their minds fixed on that truth and their very life-breath given to it, waking one another up to it, and always talking about it, they stay content and they delight.
For those who are devoted only to knowledge and who inquire into knowledge of the self, that state of being liberated while living arises in them - and it is the very same as the liberation that comes after leaving the body.
Rama said: Brahmin, tell me the mark of one liberated after leaving the body and one liberated while still living, so that I may strive in that very same way with a mind that sees through the scriptures.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathāsthitam idaṃ yasya vyavahāravato'pi ca | astam gataṃ sthitaṃ vyoma jīvanmuktaḥ sa ucyate || 4 ||
Vasishtha said: The one for whom this world, even while he carries on his ordinary dealings, stays exactly as it truly is - set, gone still, unmoving like the sky - he is called liberated while living.
One who has become steady, resting only in awareness, who even while awake stays as if in deep sleep, and who stays exactly the same even while dealing with the world - he is called liberated while living.
The glow on whose face neither rises in pleasure nor sets in pain, whose state is only whatever comes to him as it comes - he is called liberated while living.
yo jāgarti suṣuptastho yasya jāgranna vidyateyasya nirvāsano bodhaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 7 ||
He who is awake but stays as if he were in deep sleep, for whom ordinary waking does not exist, whose awareness is free of craving - he is called liberated while living.
rāgadveṣabhayādīnāmanurūpaṃ carannapiyo'ntarvyomavadacchasthaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 8 ||
He who, even while acting in keeping with liking, hatred, fear and the like, stays within like the clear open sky - he is called liberated while living.
yasyonmeṣanimeṣārdhādvidaḥ pralayasaṃbhavaupaśyettrilokyāḥ svasamaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 10 ||
The knower who, in the time it takes an eye to open and close, could see the three worlds come to an end and come into being, and yet stays equal to himself - he is called liberated while living.
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ | harṣāmarṣabhayonmuktaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 11 ||
He from whom the world does not shrink back in fear, and who does not shrink back in fear from the world, who is free of joy, anger and fear - he is called liberated while living.
He in whom the stir of worldly life has gone quiet, who though full of activity is untouched by it, and who though having a mind is free of mind - he is called liberated while living.
He who, amid all kinds of things and even while dealing with them, stays cool, whose self remains full even while among things - he is called liberated while living.
Leaving behind the state of being liberated while living, once the body has come under the power of time, he enters the liberation that has no body - the way wind enters stillness.
videhamukto nōdeti nāstameti na śāmyati | na sannāsanna dūrastho na cāhaṃ na ca netaraḥ || 15 ||
The one liberated without a body neither rises nor sets nor goes quiet; he is not existing, not non-existing, not far away, not "I", and not "other" either.
Becoming the sun he burns and shines; as Vishnu he protects the three worlds; as Rudra he destroys everyone; as the lotus-born one (Brahma) he creates the creations.
Becoming space he holds up the mass of wind together with the sages, gods and demons; becoming the great mountains he becomes the seat on which the cities of the world-guardians stand.
tejaḥ prakaṭayatyāśāstanotyāndhyaṃ tamo bhavat | śūnyaṃ sadvyomatāmeti giriḥ san rodhayaty alam || 20 ||
As light he shows brightness; as darkness he spreads blindness; being empty he takes on the state of open sky; being a mountain he blocks the way completely.
As mind he makes things move; in the form of the unmoving he keeps things standing still; becoming the ocean he encircles the earth like a woman, the way a bangle encircles a wrist.
Becoming the body of the supreme sun, spreading his light out to its very limit, he still stays at peace as the mass of dust-motes that makes up the three worlds.
Whatever is shining here, whatever has shone, and whatever is going to shine - every visible thing belonging to the three times - he himself is all of that.
This world that we see, tied up with I-ness, with a beginning and an end, even though it looks real, this liberation is reached by understanding, with the mind, that it never truly came into being.
Sri Rama said: When those who are freed without a body become the three worlds themselves, then, best among the knowers of what is to be known, I think they have simply gone back into being created again.
Sri Vasishtha said: If the three worlds really exist, then let the liberated go into that state. But they go where the very meaning of the words three worlds cannot exist at all.
How can there be a real meaning in saying this has become Brahman as the three worlds? So this idea, that the word world points to something real, does not hold at all.
It is nothing other than Brahman, peaceful, a mere appearance, pure like space. Brahman alone is the world, all this is understood through pure awareness of being.
yathā śūnyatvamākāśe tāpa eva marau jalam| teja eva sadā loke brahmaiva trijagattathā || 34 ||
Just as emptiness is nothing but space, just as the water in a mirage is nothing but heat, just as what shines in the world is always just light, so, in the same way, the three worlds are Brahman alone.
Sri Rama said: Teach me, sage, that best method of reasoning by which the freedom from the visible world comes, through understanding that it utterly does not exist.
dṛśyasya jagatastasmādatyantāsaṃbhavo yathā | brahmaivetthaṃ svabhāvasthaṃ budhyate vada me tathā || 37 ||
So tell me how it can be understood that the visible world utterly does not exist, so that Brahman alone, resting in its own true nature, becomes known.
It cannot be thrown off all at once, in a single moment, just as a mountain does not fall all at once, and climbing up or down it happens step by step.
So listen, I will tell you this, how, through steady practice, through reasoning, and through sound arguments, the delusion of the world can be calmed.
Rama, I will tell you a story meant to bring about understanding. If you listen to it, good man, then, having gained understanding, you are already free.
This delusion of the world, in this way, though never truly born, appears real, being empty like space in its very nature. This is what I am now telling you in this chapter on how things come into being.
When the great dissolution comes, in which even Rudra and the other gods are transformed, this world becomes unreal in its very appearance, it goes off somewhere, it perishes.
na śūnyaṃ nāpi cākāraṃ na dṛśyaṃ na ca darśanam | na ca bhūtapadārthaugho yadanantatayā sthitam || 48 ||
It is not emptiness, nor does it have any shape, it is not the thing seen, nor is it the act of seeing, nor is it the mass of created things, it stands there without end.
kimapyavyapadeśātma pūrṇātpūrṇatarākṛti | na sannāsanna sadasanna bhāvo bhavanaṃ na ca || 49 ||
He is something that cannot be named or pointed out. He is full, and more full than the full. He is not being, not non-being, not both being and non-being. He is not a state, and he is not becoming.
He is pure consciousness alone, with nothing to be known standing apart from him. He is endless, never grows old, and is the source of all good. He has no beginning, no middle and no end; he is without a beginning and free from every flaw.
In him the world shines and flickers, the way a pearl shows itself with a swan. He is this world, and he is not this world; he is the god whose nature is both being and non-being.
sa eva sadasadrūpaṃ yenālokena lakṣyate | sargacitramanādyantaṃ svarūpaṃ cāpy rañjanam || 53 ||
He alone has the form of being and non-being; it is by his light that things are seen. The picture of creation, without beginning or end, is his own nature, and its color and beauty are his too.
For him who sees his own true nature — which is nothing but space, always shining — the whole world looks as small as a star seen between half-closed eyebrows.
He blazes everywhere without stopping, standing in the mind of every living being. By the light of his lamp, which is pure consciousness, the three worlds shine.
saspande samudetīva niḥspandāntargate na ca | iyaṃ yasmiñjagallakṣmīralāta iva cakratā || 58 ||
When there is movement in him, the world seems to rise up; when he is still and unmoving within, it does not. This glory of the world in him is like the ring of fire made by a whirling firebrand.
The making and the unmaking of the world are his play. He is vast and reaches everywhere. His nature — made of movement and stillness — is pure and never wears out.
What is without movement in him is peaceful and full of good; what moves in him is the existence of the three worlds. He alone, whose nature is the play of movement and stillness, is one and whole.
Like the scent in flowers, he does not perish when the flowers perish. Though he stands right in front of the eyes, he cannot be caught hold of — like the whiteness in a white cloth.
He is like someone silent, yet he is not silent. He is like a stone, yet he thinks. He enjoys, yet he is always already content. He acts, yet he owns nothing.
He has no power of the senses, yet all the actions of the senses happen through him. He has no mind, yet the very way the mind is formed comes from him.
He is the witness, a vast light, unchanging — like a lamp by which actions happen. Only because he exists do the movements of the mind, which begin with a stir, take place.
sa evānyatayodeti yatpadārthaśatabhramaiḥ| kaṭakāṅgadakeyūranūpurairiva kāñcanam || 70 ||
He himself rises up as if he were many different things, through the illusion of hundreds of objects — like gold appearing as a bracelet, an armlet, a bangle and an anklet.
yastvameko'vabhāsātmā yo'hame te janāśca ye | yaśca na tvamabuddhātmā nāhaṃ naite janāśca yaḥ || 71 ||
You alone are that one whose nature is pure light. You are 'I', and you are these people too. And to a mind that has not woken up, he is not 'you', not 'I', and not these people.
From him the visible world flickers into view — seeming different from him, and also seeming apart from him, yet being just him, and also seeming not to be him, and fragile — like a row of waves in water.
It is that from which time's movement comes, that from which the seen world gets its visibility, that by which the mind's activity happens, and that by whose light everything shines forth.
Action, form, taste, smell, sound, touch, and consciousness itself - whatever among these you know, that itself is that God; and that by which you know it, that too is that same God.
Amid the seer, the state of not seeing, and the things seen, there stands one seeing awareness that remains present throughout. O good one, by attending closely to that awareness, you come to know your own self.
This Brahman is unborn, unaging, without beginning, eternal, everlasting, auspicious, stainless, and never in vain. It is deeply venerable and wholly blameless. It is free of every kind of activity, it is the cause of all causes, it is direct experience itself - unknowable to the mind, yet it is the very knowing - and it is present within the whole universe.
