The English and Hindi are machine translations, not yet reviewed by a scholar. How they are madeये कैसे बने
Shri Rama said: By what reasoning is this known? How is this proven? Once this is experienced through sound reasoning, nothing more remains to be known.
Shri Vasishtha said: For a long time this false-knowledge sickness has taken root. It is what goes by the name of the world, and it is really nothing but the habit of not examining things. Without true knowledge, it does not stop.
I will tell you these stories, Rama, which are meant to bring you understanding. If you listen to them, good man, then, being intelligent, you are indeed already free.
no cedudvegaśīlatvādardhādutthāya gacchasi | tattiryagdharminaste'dya na kiñcidapi setsyati || 4 ||
But if, out of restlessness, you get up and leave in the middle, then, having today the nature of an animal, nothing at all will be accomplished for you.
Shri Rama said: Best among those who know the scriptures, which scripture is the foremost one for awakening self-knowledge — the one which, once known, leaves nothing to grieve about?
Shri Vasishtha said: Great-minded one, among the scriptures whose main subject is self-knowledge, this very one — the auspicious Maha-Ramayana — is the supreme scripture.
Because, when this body of words is heard, unfailing liberation-while-living arises on its own — for this very reason, this is the most purifying thing of all.
The visible world, though it stands right there before us, sets like the sun through inquiry — just as, once a dream is recognized as a dream, the sense of it being real dies away right within the dream itself.
yadihāsti tadanyatra yannehāsti na tatkvacitimaṃ samastavijñānaśāstrakośaṃ vidurbudhāḥ || 12 ||
What exists here exists elsewhere too; what does not exist here does not exist anywhere. The wise know this to be the complete treasury of all knowledge and scripture.
Whoever listens to this every day, his mind reaches, without doubt, an understanding higher even than the wonderful, generous understanding it already has.
Whoever, because of past bad deeds, does not like this — let him instead examine whatever other true scripture, made of words of knowledge, he prefers.
śrūyamāṇe hi śāstre'smiñchrotā vettyetadātmanāyathāvadidamasmābhirnanūktaṃ varaśāpavat || 16 ||
For when this scripture is being heard, the listener himself comes to know this exactly as it is — indeed, what we have spoken here works like a boon or a curse.
naśyati saṃsṛtiduḥkhamidaṃ te svātmavicāraṇayā kathayaivano dhanadānatapaḥśrutavedaistatkathanoditayatnaśatena || 17 ||
This suffering of worldly existence of yours is destroyed by inquiry into your own self, through this telling alone — not by giving wealth, by austerity, by scriptural learning, by the Vedas, or by the hundreds of efforts spoken of for those other paths.
