eṣa sarvamidaṃ viśvaṃ na viśvaṃ caiṣa sarvagaḥ | vidyate hyeṣa evaiko na tu viśvābhidhāsti dṛk || 3 ||
He is this whole world, yet he, who is present everywhere, is not the world. He alone truly exists; there is no separate seen thing that deserves the name "world."
Pure awareness alone is Shiva, who wears the moon. Pure awareness alone is Vishnu, who rides Garuda. Pure awareness alone is the sun. Pure awareness alone is Brahma, who was born from the lotus.
Vasishtha said, "You have understood that the world is pure awareness, that it is something conscious. But you have not truly understood anything that would end worldly existence."
Rama, this conscious thing is called the individual soul, the bound creature, and this itself is what people call the world of birth and death. From this alone come the fears of old age and death.
This bound creature is ignorant, and though it has no fixed form, it is a vessel of suffering. Because it is conscious in this limited way, the mind is what it must come to know - and this mind, which is itself the source of trouble, stands there on its own.
Being completely free from the thing that is known, or else turning away from the thing that is known - either way, this is the Self's state of fullness. Knowing this, a person does not grieve.
The knot in the heart is broken, all doubts are cut away, and this person's past actions wear away, when that reality is seen which is both the highest and everything within it.
tasya cetyondmukhatvaṃ tu cetysāṃbhavanaṃ vinā | roddhuṃ na śakyate dṛśyaṃ cetyaṃ śāmyati vai katham || 11 ||
But the mind's turning toward the thing that is known cannot be stopped unless that known thing stops arising. So how does the seen, the known thing, ever grow quiet?
acetyacitsvarūpaṃ yattaccāsaṃbhavaṇaṃ vinā | kva svarūponmukhatvaṃ hi kevalaṃ cetyarodhataḥ || 12 ||
That which is pure awareness free of anything known - without that known thing ceasing to arise, where is the turning toward one's own true nature? It comes only by stopping the thing that is known.
Rama said, "That soul, knowing whom the cycle of birth and death does not end, the ignorant, unconscious creature that seems shaped like empty space - where is it, teacher, and what is it like?"
Through the company of good people and true scriptures, a person crosses the ocean of worldly existence and sees the Supreme Self. Tell me, teacher, what is that Supreme Self like?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadetaccetanaṃ jīvo viśīrṇo janmajaṅgale | etamātmānamicchanti ye te'jñāḥ paṇḍitā api || 15 ||
Vasishtha said, "This conscious thing, the soul scattered about in the wilderness of births - those who take this to be the true Self, they are ignorant, even if they are scholars."
jīva eva hi saṃsāraścetanā duḥkhasaṃtatiḥasmiñjñāte na vijñātaṃ kiṃcidbhavati kutracit || 16 ||
The soul itself is the world of birth and death; this limited consciousness is a constant stream of suffering. When this is understood for what it is, nothing anywhere is left unknown.
If the Supreme Self is known, Rama, this stream of suffering comes to an end - just as a violent bowel disease grows quiet once the force of the poison inside it has calmed down.
Sri Vasishtha said: The awareness that travels a great distance from one place to another far-off place in the blink of an eye - the space in between, in which this happens, that is the form of the Supreme Self.
The world of birth and death, exactly as it truly stands, is in fact completely non-existent. That great ocean of awareness within which this is so, that is the form of the Supreme Self.
The order of seer and seen, though it is present there, has in truth vanished. That which is space and yet is not space - that is the form of the Supreme Self.
That which is empty, yet seems as if it were not empty; in which the empty world stands; the emptiness that remains even while the flood of creation goes on - that is the form of the Supreme Self.
That which, though made of vast awareness, stands still like a huge rock - whether it looks lifeless or not, it is lifeless only on the outside. That is the form of the Supreme Self.
That by which everything, inside and outside, comes into contact and union, and thereby gains the reality of its own true nature - that is the form of the Supreme Self.
As radiance naturally belongs to light, and emptiness naturally belongs to the sky, so this world rests in that which is the very form of the Supreme Self.
Rama said: How can it be understood that the Supreme Self has the nature of pure existence? And how can it be said that this seen world, which is so vast, does not exist at all?
Vasishtha said: This illusion of the world is born just like a colour seeming to appear in the empty sky. If ordinary agreement were enough to fully understand that it does not exist at all,
then that alone would be known as the true form of Brahman, and nothing else would need to be done. Except through the complete non-existence of this seen world, there is no other good path.
When this seen world reaches its complete non-existence, exactly as it truly is, what remains is the Supreme Reality. From that, true understanding is born.
For the one who knows, there is no reflection anywhere except through the absence of the thing seen. Yet nowhere does a mirror stand without some reflection in it.
Without recognising that this thing called the world, which is seen, cannot truly have its own existence, the highest truth is never understood by anyone, at any time.
Rama said: O sage, how can there be non-existence of this vast seen creation, this universe, this world that stands before us? Where can Mount Meru fit inside the belly of a mustard seed?
pramārjayāmi te dṛśyaṃ bodhe mṛgajalaṃ yathā | dṛśyābhāve draṣṭṛtā ca śāmyedbodho'vaśiṣyate || 34 ||
will wipe away this seen world for you, the way a mirage's water is wiped away by true knowledge. When the seen thing is gone, the sense of being a seer will also calm down, and only pure awareness will remain.
draṣṭṛtvaṃ sati dṛśye'smin dṛśyatvaṃ satyathekṣake | ekatvaṃ sati hi dvitve dvitvaṃ caikatvayojane || 35 ||
Being a seer exists only when this seen thing exists, and being seen exists only when there is a seer. Oneness exists only in relation to twoness, and twoness exists only by joining two ones together.
When one of the two is absent, neither of them can truly be established at all. When twoness, oneness, being-a-seer and being-seen all dissolve away, pure being alone remains.
ahaṃtādijagadṛśyaṃ sarvaṃ te mārjayāmyaham | atyantābhāvasaṃvittyā manomukurato malam || 37 ||
I will wipe away this whole seen world for you, starting with the sense of I, the dirt on the mirror of the mind, through the realisation that it has no existence at all.
What is unreal never truly exists, and what is real never truly stops existing. So if a thing does not exist at all by its own nature, what trouble is there in wiping it away?
This world, never born from the very beginning, which appears spread out before us as something seen, exists only within its own pure self, grown out of itself, because it is nothing but the consciousness of Brahman.
jagannāmnā na cotpannaṃ na cāsti na ca dṛśyate | hemnīva kaṭakāditvaṃ kimetanmārjane śramaḥ || 40 ||
This thing called the world was never born, does not exist, and is not really seen, just as names like bangle or bracelet exist only within gold. So what effort is there in wiping this away?
So I will explain this to you in detail, with many kinds of reasoning, so that you yourself may directly experience this truth, which cannot be denied.
What was never born at all in the beginning, how can it have real existence here? How can there be a river of water in a desert mirage, how can there be a second moon, how can there be an eclipse seizing it?
Just as a barren woman's son does not exist, just as water does not exist in a desert mirage, just as a spirit in the empty sky does not exist, so this illusion of the world does not exist.
O noble-minded one, it is not right to disrespect what the knowers of truth explain here through reasoning. Whoever, with a confused mind, scorns what is proven by sound reasoning and stubbornly clings to a wrong, difficult position, that person the wise know as simply ignorant.
