श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । अथ वीरवरोत्कण्ठनृत्यदप्सरसि स्थिता । लीलावलोकयामास व्योम्नि विद्यान्वितावनौ ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha vīravarotkaṇṭhanṛtyadapsarasi sthitā | līlāvalokayāmāsa vyomni vidyānvitāvanau || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Then Lila, standing where the apsaras were dancing in eagerness for the finest of heroes, watched for sport from the sky, looking down with her magic power upon the earth.

वसिष्ठ बोले: फिर लीला, जहाँ अप्सराएँ सबसे श्रेष्ठ वीर के लिए उत्सुक होकर नाच रही थीं, वहाँ खड़ी होकर, आकाश से अपनी विद्या की शक्ति से धरती को खेल-खेल में देखने लगी।

स्वराष्ट्रमण्डले भर्तृपालिते बलमालिते । कस्मिंश्चिद्विततारण्ये द्वितीयाकाशभीषणे ॥ २ ॥

svarāṣṭramanḍale bhartṛpālite balamālite | kasmiṃścidvitatāraṇye dvitīyākāśabhīṣaṇe || 2 ||

There, in her own kingdom, guarded by her husband and filled with troops, in a vast forest, as frightening as a second sky,

वहाँ, उसके अपने राज्य में, जो उसके पति द्वारा रक्षित था और सेना से भरा था, एक विशाल जंगल में, जो मानो दूसरे आकाश जैसा भयानक था,

सेनाद्वितयमाक्षुब्धं सौम्याब्धिद्वितयोपमम् । महारम्भघनं मत्तं स्थितं राजद्वयान्वितम् ॥ ३ ॥

senādvitayamākṣubdhaṃ saumyābdhidvitayopamam | mahārambhaghanaṃ mattaṃ sthitaṃ rājadvayānvitam || 3 ||

two armies stood churning like two calm oceans about to rise, dense with a great undertaking, furious, joined with two kings.

दो सेनाएँ खड़ी थीं, मानो दो शांत समुद्र उमड़ने को हों, एक बड़े अभियान से घनी, क्रोध से भरी, और दो राजाओं के साथ।

युद्धसज्जं सुसंनद्धमिद्धमग्निमिवाद्भुतम् । पूर्वप्रहारसंपातप्रेक्षाक्षुब्धाक्षिलक्षितम् ॥ ४ ॥

yuddhasajjaṃ susaṃnaddhamidhdhamagnimivādbhutam | pūrvaprahārasaṃpātaprekṣākṣubdhākṣilakṣitam || 4 ||

Ready for battle, well armored, wonderful like blazing fire, marked by eyes that grew restless watching for the first blow to fall.

युद्ध के लिए तैयार, अच्छी तरह कवच पहने, धधकती आग जैसी अद्भुत, और ऐसी आँखों से पहचानी जाती थी जो पहले वार के गिरने की ताक में बेचैन थीं।

उद्यतामलनिस्त्रिंशधारासारवहज्जनम् । कचत्परश्वधप्रासभिन्दिपालर्ष्टिमुद्गरम् ॥ ५ ॥

udyatāmalanistriṃśadhārāsāravahajjanam | kacatparaśvadhaprāsabhindipālarṣṭimudgaram || 5 ||

It carried men bearing raised, spotless swords whose edges flowed like a stream, and it gleamed with axes, spears, javelins, lances and clubs.

उसमें ऐसे लोग थे जो उठी हुई निर्मल तलवारें लिए थे जिनकी धार किसी बहती धारा जैसी थी, और वह कुल्हाड़ियों, भालों, बरछों, बरछियों और गदाओं से चमक रही थी।

गरुत्मत्पक्षविक्षुब्धवनसंपातकम्पितम् । उद्यद्दिनकरालोकचञ्चत्कनककङ्कटम् ॥ ६ ॥

garutmatpakṣavikṣubdhavanasampātakampitam | udyaddinakarālokacañcatkanakakaṅkaṭam || 6 ||

It trembled like a forest struck by the beating of Garuda's wings, and its golden armor flashed in the light of the rising sun.

वह ऐसे काँप रही थी जैसे गरुड़ के पंखों की चोट से हिला हुआ जंगल, और उसके सुनहरे कवच उगते सूरज की रोशनी में चमक रहे थे।

परस्परमुखालोककोपप्रोद्दामितायुधम् । अन्योन्यबद्धदृष्टित्वाच्चित्रं भित्ताविवार्पितम् ॥ ७ ॥

parasparamukhālokakopaproddāmitāyudham | anyonyabaddhadṛṣṭitvāccitraṃ bhittāvivārpitam || 7 ||

Its weapons were raised in anger at the sight of each other's faces, and because every eye was fixed on the other side, the whole scene stood still like a picture painted on a wall.

एक-दूसरे का चेहरा देखकर क्रोध से हथियार उठा लिए गए थे, और चूँकि सबकी नज़रें एक-दूसरे पर टिकी थीं, पूरा दृश्य दीवार पर बने चित्र जैसा स्थिर खड़ा था।

लेखामर्यादया दीर्घबद्धया स्थापितस्थिति । अनिवार्यमहासैन्यझांकाराश्रुतसंकथम् ॥ ८ ॥

lekhāmaryādayā dīrghabaddhayā sthāpitasthiti | anivāryamahāsainyaẕāṅkārāśrutasaṅkatham || 8 ||

Its position was fixed by a long, unbroken line, and it was filled with the ceaseless, confused clang of the huge army that could not be checked.

उसकी जगह एक लंबी, बिना टूटी रेखा से तय की गई थी, और वह विशाल सेना की उस रुके न सकने वाली गड़गड़ाहट से भरी थी जो शांत नहीं होती थी।

पूर्वप्रहारस्मयतश्चिरं संशान्तदुन्दुभि । निबद्धयोधसंस्थाननिखिलानीकमन्थरम् ॥ ९ ॥

pūrvaprahārasmayataściraṃ saṃśāntadundubhi | nibaddhayodhasaṃsthānanikhilānīkamantharam || 9 ||

Out of wonder at who would strike the first blow, the war drums stayed silent for a long time, and the whole army moved slowly, with every warrior fixed in his place.

यह देखकर कि पहला वार कौन करेगा, युद्ध के नगाड़े देर तक चुप रहे, और पूरी सेना धीरे-धीरे चल रही थी, हर योद्धा अपनी जगह पर जमा हुआ था।

धनुर्द्वितथमात्रात्मशून्यमध्यैकसेतुना । विभक्तं कल्पवातेन मत्तमेकार्णवं यथा ॥ १० ॥

dhanurdvitathamātrātmaśūnyamadhyaiakasetunā | vibhaktaṃ kalpavātena mattamekārṇavaṃ yathā || 10 ||

Divided by a single narrow strip no wider than a bow's length, with an empty space between, it was like the one great ocean stirred by the wind of the world's end.

एक धनुष जितनी चौड़ी संकरी पट्टी से बँटी हुई, बीच में खाली जगह के साथ, वह मानो प्रलय की आँधी से उमड़ता एक विशाल समुद्र थी।

काये संकटसंरम्भचिन्तापरवशेश्वरम् । विरटद्भेककण्ठत्वग्भङ्गुरातुरहृद्गुहम् ॥ ११ ॥

kāye saṃkaṭasaṃrambhacintāparaveśvaraṃ | viraṭadbhekakaṇṭhatvagbhagurāturahṛdguhaṃ || 11 ||

In its body it was ruled by anxious thought born of danger and fury, and the cave of its heart trembled and ached like the throat-skin of a croaking frog.

उसके शरीर में वह खतरे और क्रोध से उपजी बेचैन सोच के अधीन थी, और उसके हृदय की गुफा उस मेंढक की गर्दन की खाल जैसी काँप रही थी और दुखी थी जो टर्र-टर्र कर रहा हो।

प्राणसर्वस्वसंत्यागसोद्योगासंख्यसैनिकम् । कर्णाकृष्टशरौघौघत्यागोन्मुखधनुर्धरम् ॥ १२ ॥

prāṇasarvasvasaṃtyāgasodyogāsaṃkhyasainikaṃ | karṇākṛṣṭaśaraughaughatyāgonmukhadhanurdharaṃ || 12 ||

Countless soldiers were ready to give up their whole life for it, and archers stood eager to loose the flood of arrows drawn back to the ear.

अनगिनत सैनिक उसके लिए अपना पूरा प्राण देने को तैयार थे, और धनुर्धर कान तक खींचे गए बाणों की बाढ़ छोड़ने को उत्सुक खड़े थे।

प्रहारपातसंप्रेक्षानिष्पन्दासंख्यसैनिकम् । अन्योन्योत्कण्ठकाठिन्यभरभ्रुकुटिसंकटम् ॥ १३ ॥

prahārapātasaṃprekṣāniṣpandāsaṃkhyasainikaṃ | anyonyotkaṇṭhakāṭhinayabharabhrukuṭisaṃkaṭaṃ || 13 ||

Countless soldiers stood motionless, watching for the blow to fall, and the place was crowded with frowns heavy with mutual eagerness and hardness.

अनगिनत सैनिक निश्चल खड़े थे, वार गिरने की ताक में, और वह जगह एक-दूसरे के लिए उत्सुकता और कठोरता से भरी भौंहों की तनाव से भरी थी।

परस्परसुसंघट्टकटुटङ्कारकङ्कटम् । वीरयोधमुखादग्धभीरुप्रेप्सितकोटरम् ॥ १४ ॥

parasparasusaṃghaṭṭakaṭuṭaṅkārakaṅkaṭaṃ | vīrayodhamukhādagdhabhīruprepsitakoṭaraṃ || 14 ||

Its armor rang with the harsh clash of bodies colliding with one another, and the cowards, scorched by the faces of the heroic warriors, longed for some hollow place to hide in.

उसका कवच एक-दूसरे से टकराने की कड़वी झंकार से गूँज रहा था, और डरपोक लोग, वीर योद्धाओं के चेहरों से जैसे झुलसकर, छिपने के लिए कोई खोखली जगह चाहते थे।

पूर्वप्रहारसंप्रेक्षाव्यग्रप्राणतया तया । संशान्तकल्लोलरवं निद्रामुद्रपुरोपमम् ॥ १५ ॥

pūrvaprahārasaṃprekṣāvyagraprāṇatayā tayā | saṃśāntakallolaravaṃ nidrāmudrapuropamaṃ || 15 ||

With its life-breath anxious watching for the first blow to fall, its roaring like waves fell silent, and it was like a city sealed shut in sleep.

पहले वार की ताक में उसकी साँसें बेचैन थीं, उसकी लहरों जैसी गर्जना शांत हो गई थी, और वह मानो नींद में बंद एक नगरी जैसी थी।

पूर्वप्रद्वारसंम्रेक्षाव्यश्नप्राणतयातया ॥ संशातकल्लोलरवंनिद्रामुदपुरोपमं ॥ ॥ १६ ॥

pūrvapradvārasaṃmrakṣāvyaśnaprāṇatayātayā || saṃśātakallolaravaṃnidrāmudapuropamaṃ || || 16 ||

With its life-breath anxious watching for the first blow to fall, its roaring like waves fell silent, and it was like a city sealed shut in sleep.

पहले वार की ताक में उसकी साँसें बेचैन थीं, उसकी लहरों जैसी गर्जना शांत हो गई थी, और वह मानो नींद में बंद एक नगरी जैसी थी।

संशान्तशंखसंघाततूर्यनिर्ह्राददुन्दुभिभूतलाकाशसंलीनसर्वपांसुपयोधरम् ॥ १७ ॥

saṃśāntaśaṅkhasaṃghātatūryanirhrādadundubhibhūtalākāśasaṃlīnasarvapāṃsupayodharam || 17 ||

Its conches, massed trumpets, and drums had all gone quiet, and all its dust had settled, merging into the sky and the ground like clouds.

उसके शंख, इकट्ठे बाजे और नगाड़े सब चुप हो गए थे, और उसकी सारी धूल आकाश और धरती में बादलों की तरह मिलकर बैठ गई थी।

पलायनपरैः पश्चात्त्यक्तमङ्गुलमण्डलम्विसारिमकरव्यूहमत्स्यसंख्याब्धिभासुरम् ॥ १८ ॥

palāyanaparaiḥ paścāttyaktamaṅgulamaṇḍalamvisārimakaravyūhamatsyasaṃkhyābdhibhāsuram || 18 ||

The ring of its footprints was left behind by those bent on running away, and it shone like an ocean spread with crocodile formations and countless fish.

भागने पर तुले लोगों ने अपने पैरों के निशानों का घेरा पीछे छोड़ दिया था, और वह मगरमच्छों की तरह फैली हुई पंक्तियों और असंख्य मछलियों वाले समुद्र जैसी चमक रही थी।

पताकामञ्जरीपुञ्जविजिताकाशतारकम्हास्तिकोत्तम्भितकरकाननीकृतखान्तरम् ॥ १९ ॥

patākāmañjarīpuñjavijitākāśatārakamhāstikottambhitakarakānanīkṛtakhāntaram || 19 ||

Its clusters of banners outshone the stars in the sky, and the raised trunks of its elephants turned the space between them into a forest.

उसके झंडों के गुच्छे आकाश के तारों को भी मात दे रहे थे, और उसके हाथियों की उठी हुई सूँडों ने बीच के आकाश को मानो जंगल बना दिया था।

तरत्तरलभापूरसपक्षसकलायुधम्धमद्धमितिशब्दैश्च श्वासोस्थैर्ध्मातखान्तरम् ॥ २० ॥

tarattaralabhāpūrasapakṣasakalāyudhamdhamaddhamitiśabdaiśca śvāsosthairdhmātakhāntaram || 20 ||

All its weapons floated with a trembling light like fish, feathered and ready, and the space between the armies was filled with the sound of panting breath going dhamad-dhamad.

उसके सभी हथियार मछलियों की तरह काँपती हुई चमक के साथ तैर रहे थे और पंखदार थे, और सेनाओं के बीच की जगह हाँफती साँसों की धमद-धमद आवाज़ से भरी थी।

चक्रव्यूहकराक्रान्तदुर्वृत्तसुरभासुरम् । गरुडव्यूहसंरम्भविद्रवन्नागसंचयम् ॥ २१ ॥

cakravyūhakarākrāntadurvṛttasurabhāsuram | garuḍavyūhasaṃrambhavidravannāgasaṃcayam || 21 ||

It shone with the wheel formation whose arms seized whatever went wrong, like the gods, and masses of great serpents fled in fear before the fury of the eagle formation.

वह चक्रव्यूह से चमक रही थी जिसके हाथ हर गलत चाल को पकड़ लेते थे, मानो देवता हों, और नागों की भीड़ गरुड़-व्यूह के प्रकोप से भयभीत होकर भाग रही थी।

श्येनव्यूहविभिन्नाग्रसंनिवेशोत्तमध्वनि । अन्योन्यास्फोटनिःशेषप्रपतद्भूरिवृन्दकम् ॥ २२ ॥

śyenavyūhavibhinnāgrasaṃniveśottamadhvani | anyonyāsphoṭaniḥśeṣaprapatadbhūrivṛndakam || 22 ||

The hawk formation was loud with the sound of its front ranks breaking apart, and great masses fell completely, striking against one another.

बाज़-व्यूह का अगला हिस्सा टूटकर बिखरने की आवाज़ से गूँज रहा था, और बड़ी-बड़ी भीड़ें एक-दूसरे से टकराकर पूरी तरह गिर रही थीं।

विविधव्यूहविन्यासवान्तवीरवरारवम् । करप्रतोलनोल्लासमत्तमुद्गरमण्डलम् ॥ २३ ॥

vividhavyūhavinyāsavāntavīravarāravam | karapratolanaullāsamattamudgaramaṇḍalam || 23 ||

The finest heroes roared out as they were thrown into the many kinds of battle formation, and the ring of clubs grew wild with delight as arms swung them.

श्रेष्ठ वीर विभिन्न प्रकार के व्यूहों में झोंके जाते हुए गरज रहे थे, और गदाओं का घेरा भुजाओं के हिलने के आनंद से उन्मत्त हो रहा था।

कृष्णायुधांशुजलदश्यामीकृतदिवाकरम् । अनिलाधूतपल्यूलसूत्कृताभशरध्वनि ॥ २४ ॥

kṛṣṇāyudhāṃśujaladaśyāmīkṛtadivākaram | anilādhūtapalyūlasūtkṛtābhaśaradhvani || 24 ||

The sun turned as dark as a cloud from the rays of the black weapons, and the sound of the arrows was like the hiss of dry stalks shaken by the wind.

काले हथियारों की चमक से सूरज बादल जैसा काला पड़ गया था, और बाणों की आवाज़ हवा से हिलते सूखे डंठलों की सरसराहट जैसी थी।

अनेककल्पकल्पाग्रसवृन्दमिव संस्थितम् । प्रलयानिलसंक्षुब्धमेकार्णवमिवोत्थितम् ॥ २५ ॥

anekakalpakalpāgrasavṛndamiva saṃsthitam | pralayānilasaṃkṣubdham ekārṇavamivotthitam || 25 ||

It stood there like the whole mass gathered at the end of many ages, and it rose up like a single ocean churned by the wind of the great dissolution.

वह ऐसे खड़ी थी जैसे कई युगों के अंत में इकट्ठा हुआ पूरा जत्था हो, और वह ऐसे उठी जैसे प्रलय की आँधी से मथा हुआ एक ही समुद्र उठ खड़ा हुआ हो।

सद्यश्छिन्नं महामेरोः पक्षद्वयमिव स्फुरत् । क्षुब्धमारुतनिर्धूतमिव कज्जलपर्वतम् ॥ २६ ॥

sadyaśchinnaṃ mahāmeroḥ pakṣadvayamiva sphurat | kṣubdhamārutanirdhūtamiva kajjalaparvatam || 26 ||

It flashed like the two wings of the great mountain Meru just now cut off, like a mountain of black soot shaken by a raging wind.

वह ऐसे चमक रही थी जैसे महामेरु पर्वत के अभी-अभी कटे हुए दोनों पंख हों, जैसे तेज़ आँधी से हिलता हुआ कालिख का पहाड़ हो।

पातालकुहरात्क्षुब्धमन्धकारमिवोत्थितम् । लोकालोकमिवोन्मत्तनृत्यलोललसत्तटम् । महानरकसंघातं भित्त्वावनिमिवोत्थितम् ॥ २७ ॥

pātālakuharātkṣubdhamandhakāramivottitam | lokālokamivonmattanṛtyalolasattataṃ | mahānarakasaṃghātaṃ bhittvāvanimivottitam || 27 ||

It rose up like churning darkness out of the pit of the underworld, like the ring-mountain Lokaloka with its shores trembling and glittering as in a mad dance, and it rose up as if it had broken through the earth and lifted up with it a mass of the great hells.

वह ऐसे उठी जैसे पाताल के गड्ढे से मथा हुआ अंधकार उठ रहा हो, जैसे लोकालोक पर्वत हो जिसके किनारे पागलों जैसे नाच में काँप-काँप कर चमक रहे हों, और वह ऐसे उठी जैसे धरती को फोड़कर बड़े-बड़े नरकों का ढेर साथ लेकर उठी हो।

आलोलकुन्तमुसलासिपरश्वधांशुश्यामायमानदिवसातपवारिपूरैः । एकार्णवं भुवनकोशमिवाचिरेण कर्तुं समुद्यतमगाधमनन्तपूरैः ॥ २८ ॥

ālolakuntamusalāsiparaśvadhāṃśuśyāmāyamānadivasātapavāripūraiḥ | ekārṇavaṃ bhuvanakośamivācireṇa kartuṃ samudyatamagādhamanantapūraiḥ || 28 ||

With the gleam of swaying spears, clubs, swords and axes darkening the sun's daylight heat like floods of water, it stood ready, with endless, bottomless floods, to soon turn the whole world into a single ocean.

डोलते हुए भालों, गदाओं, तलवारों और कुल्हाड़ियों की चमक से दिन की धूप को पानी की बाढ़ की तरह काला करते हुए, वह अनंत और अथाह बाढ़ों के साथ पूरी दुनिया को जल्दी ही एक ही समुद्र बना देने के लिए तैयार खड़ी थी।
