13.31.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca evamākalayantyau ye nirgatya jagato nijāt antaḥpuraṃ dadṛśatūrjhaṭityeva vinirgate || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Thinking this, the two women left their own world. As soon as they came out, they suddenly saw an inner palace room.

sthitapuṣpabhara pūrṇamahārājam dāśavaṃ jhāvapāścopaviṣṭāntaścittalīlaśarīrakam || 2 ||

A great king, whole and complete and weighed down with flowers, sat within, his body shaped by the play of the mind, by Lila's own sport.

33.31.3

ghanarātritayālpālpamahānidrājanākulam dhūpacandanakarpūrakuṅkumāmodamantharam || 3 ||

That room was crowded with people falling little by little into deep, heavy sleep through the thick of three nights. It was heavy with the smell of incense, sandalwood, camphor, and saffron.

tamālokyāparam bhartuḥ saṃsāraṃ gantumādṛtā papāta līlā saṃkalpadehenātraiva tannabhaḥ || 4 ||

Seeing this, Lila wished to go on to her husband's other world. Right there, she fell into that sky with the body made by her own will.

viveśa bhartuḥ saṃkalpasasāraṃ kiṃcidātatam saṃsārāvaraṇaṃ bhittvā bhittvā brahmāṇḍakarpuram || 5 ||

She entered her husband's world, made by his own will, a world spread out quite far. She broke through the covering of that world again and again, breaking through the shell of the whole universe.

prāpa sārdhaṃ tayā devyā punarāvaraṇānvitam | brahmāṇḍamaṇḍapaṃ sphāraṃ taṃ praviśya tathā javāt || 6 ||

Along with the goddess, she reached another covering, and quickly passing through it, entered the vast hall of that universe.

dadarśa bhartuḥ saṃkalpajagajjambālapalvalam | siṃhīva śailakuharaṃ tamo jaladapaṅkilam || 7 ||

She saw her husband's imagined world like a muddy pond. She entered it like a lioness entering a mountain cave — a darkness thick as rain clouds and mud.

devyo viviśatus tatte vyoma vyomātmike jagat | brahmāṇḍe'ntaryathā pakvaṃ mṛdubilvaṃ pipīlike || 8 ||

The two goddesses entered that sky, that world made of sky itself, inside the universe — like two ants entering a ripe, soft wood-apple fruit.

tatra lokāntarāṇyadrīnantarikṣamatītya te | prāpaturbhūtalaṃ śailamaṇḍalāmbhodhisaṃkulam || 9 ||

There they crossed other worlds, mountains, and the sky, and reached the surface of the earth, crowded with mountain ranges and oceans.

meruṇālaṅkṛtaṃ jambudvīpaṃ navadalodaram | gatvātha bhārate varṣe līlānāthasya maṇḍalam || 10 ||

They went to Jambudvipa, the land decorated by Mount Meru, whose middle has nine regions, and then to the land of Bharata, to the kingdom of Lila's husband.

etasminnantare tasminmaṇḍale maṇḍitāvanaucakre'vaskandanaṃ kaścitsāmantodriktabhūmipaḥ || 11 ||

Meanwhile, in that kingdom, on that beautiful land, a certain feudal king who had grown too powerful launched a sudden attack.

tena saṃgrāmasaṃrambhe prekṣārthaṃ samupāgataiḥtrailokyabhūtaistadvyoma babhūvātyantasaṃkaṭam || 12 ||

Because of him, when the battle broke out, that sky became extremely crowded with beings from the three worlds who had come to watch.

aśaṅkitāgate tatte devyau dadṛśaturnabhaḥnabhaścaragaṇākrāntamambudairiva mālitam || 13 ||

The two goddesses arrived without expecting it, and saw that sky covered with crowds of sky-travelers, as if wrapped in clouds.

143.31.14

siddhacāraṇagandharvagaṇavidyādharānvitamśūragrahaṇasaṃrabdhasvargalokāpsarovṛtam || 14 ||

It was full of groups of Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, and Vidyadharas, and surrounded by heaven-dwellers and Apsaras excited to pick out the heroes.

153.31.15

raktamāṃsonmukhonmattabhūtarakṣaḥpiśācakampuṣpavṛṣṭibhirāpūrṇahastavidyādharāṅganam || 15 ||

It was full of Bhutas, Rakshasas, and Pishachas, wild and eager for flesh and blood, and Vidyadhara women whose hands were busy showering flowers.

163.31.16

vetālayakṣakūśmāṇḍairdvandvālokanasādaraiḥ| āyudhāpātarakṣārthaṃ gṛhītādrītaṭairvṛtam || 16 ||

It was surrounded by Vetalas, Yakshas, and Kushmandas eagerly watching the duel, holding pieces of mountain cliffs to protect themselves from falling weapons.

173.31.17

astramārganabhobhāgavidravadbhūtamaṇḍalam| āhopuruṣikākṣubdhaprekṣakāmodanodbhaṭam || 17 ||

In the path of the weapons, crowds of beings fled across the sky. Excited spectators, boastful and restless, made the whole scene fierce.

183.31.18

āsannabhīmasaṃgrāmakiṃvadantīparasparam| līlāhāsavilāsotkasundarīdhṛtacāmaram || 18 ||

Everyone talked to each other about the fearsome battle that was near at hand. Beautiful women, eager for playful laughter and charm, stood holding fly-whisks.

193.31.19

dharmāprekṣyaprayuktāgryamunisvastyayanastavam| saṃpannānekalokeśvanitāvasarastavam || 19 ||

Great sages sang hymns of blessing without asking which side was right. Many wives of world-rulers had also come and filled that occasion.

203.31.20

svargārhaśūrānayanavyagrendrabhaṭabhāsuram| śūrārthālaṃkṛtottuṅgalokapālākhyavāraṇam || 20 ||

The sky shone with Indra's soldiers, busy bringing forward the heroes worthy of heaven, and with tall elephants named after the guardians of the world, decorated for the sake of the heroes.

213.31.21

āgacchacchūrasanmānonmukhagandharvacāraṇam | śūronmukhāmarastraiṇakaṭākṣekṣitasadbhaṭam || 21 ||

Gandharvas and Charanas came, eager to honor the heroes, and heaven-dwelling women watched the good warriors with sidelong glances, eager for them.

vīradordaṇḍakāśleṣalampatastrīgaṇākaram | śuklena śūrayaśasā candrīkṛtadivākaram || 22 ||

It was a mine full of women eager to embrace the warriors' strong arms. The white fame of the heroes was so bright that it turned the sun into a moon.

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavañchūraśabdena kīdṛśaḥ procyate bhaṭaḥ | svargālaṃkaraṇa kaḥ syātkovā ḍimbhaāhavo bhavet || 23 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, what kind of fighter is called a hero by that word? Who deserves to reach heaven, and who is merely fighting a child's battle?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | śāstroktaācārayuktasya prabhorarthena yo raṇe | mṛto vātha jayī vā syātsa śūraḥ śūralokabhāk || 24 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Whoever follows the conduct laid down by scripture and fights in battle for his lord's cause, whether he dies or wins, he is a hero, and he shares in the world of heroes.

anyathā prāṇikṛttāṅgo raṇe yo mṛtimāpnuyāt | ḍimbhaāhavahataḥ proktaḥ sa naro narakāspadam || 25 ||

Otherwise, if a man's limbs are cut off by other fighters and he dies in battle in this way, he is said to have been killed in a mere scuffle, not a real battle, and that man ends up in hell.

ayathāśāstrasaṃcāravṛtterarthena yudhyate | yo narastasya saṃgrāme mṛtasya nirayo'kṣayaḥ || 26 ||

The man who fights only for money, in a way that does not follow the scriptures' rules - if he dies in that battle, he goes to hell forever, an endless hell.

yathāsaṃbhavaśāstrārthalokācārānuvṛttimān | yudhyate tādṛśaścaiva bhaktaḥ śūraḥ sa ucyate || 27 ||

But the man who fights, as far as he can, according to the meaning of the scriptures and the customs of the world, and who is loyal to his master - such a man is called a hero.

gorarthe brāhmaṇasyārthe mitrasyārthe ca sanmate | śaraṇāgatayatnena sa mṛtaḥ svargabhūṣaṇam || 28 ||

The man who dies trying to protect a cow, or a brahmin, or a good friend, or someone who has come to him for shelter - that man, when he dies, becomes an ornament of heaven.

paripālyasvadeśaikapālane yaḥ sthitaḥ sadā | rājā mṛtāstadarthaṃ ye te vīrā vīralokinaḥ || 29 ||

The king who always stays firm in protecting his own land, which he alone is meant to protect - the men who die fighting for his sake are heroes, and they go to the world of heroes.

prajopadravaniṣṭhasya rājño'rājño'tha vā prabhoḥ | arthena ye mṛtā yuddhe te vai nirayagāminaḥ || 30 ||

But those who die in battle fighting for a king - or for someone who is not really a king, or for any master - who is bent on troubling his own people, they go straight to hell.

ye hi rājñāmarājñāṃ vāpyayathāśāstrakāriṇām | raṇe mriyante chinnāṅgāste vai nirayagāminaḥ || 31 ||

Those whose limbs are cut off and who die in battle fighting for kings, or for men who are not really kings, who act against what the scriptures say - they too go to hell.

dharmyaṃ yathā tathā yuddhaṃ yadi syāttarhi saṃsthitiḥ | nāśayeyuralaṃ mattāḥ paralokabhayojjhitāḥ || 32 ||

If war were called right no matter how it is fought, then that would become the accepted rule, and men drunk with battle-fury, with no fear left of what comes after death, would destroy everything without any limit.

yatra yatra hataḥ śūraḥ svarga ityavaśoktayaḥ | dharme yoddhā bhavecchūra ityevaṃ śāstraniścayaḥ || 33 ||

Wherever a hero is killed, people simply say, without thinking further, that he has gone to heaven. But the scriptures have settled it clearly: a hero is only the one who fights for what is right.

sadācāravatāmarthe khaḍgadhārāṃ sahanti ye | te śūrā iti kathyante śeṣā ḍimbāhavāhatāḥ || 34 ||

Those who face the edge of the sword for the sake of people who live by good conduct - they are the ones called heroes. All the rest are just men killed in a worthless scuffle.

teṣāmarthe raṇe vyomni tiṣṭhantyutkaṇṭhitāśayāḥ | śūrībhūtamahāsattvadayitoktisurāṅganāḥ || 35 ||

For the sake of such heroes, the heavenly women stand in the sky above the battle, their hearts full of longing, speaking loving words to the great being who has proved himself a hero.

363.31.36

vidyādharīmadhuramantharagītigarbhaṃ mandāramālyavalanākulakāminīkam | viśrāntakāntasurasiddhavimānapaṅkti vyomotsavoccariataśobhamivollalāsa || 36 ||

That row of beautiful chariots of the gods and the siddhas, resting there in the sky, was full of the sweet, slow songs of the vidyadhara women, and crowded with women busy weaving garlands of mandara flowers - it shone out as if it were the very glow of a festival being held in the sky.
