13.30.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācapṛthivyaptejasāṃ tatra nabhasvannabhasorapiyathottaraṃ daśaguṇānatītyāvaraṇānkṣaṇāt || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: There, in an instant, he crossed beyond the coverings of earth, water, fire, wind, and space too - each one ten times bigger than the one before it.

dadarśa paramākāśa tatpramāṇavivarjitamtathā tataṃ jagadidaṃ yathā tatrāṇḍamātrakam || 2 ||

He saw the highest space, which has no measure at all, and saw that this whole world was spread out in it, looking like nothing more than a tiny egg.

tādṛśāvaraṇānsargānbrahmāṇḍeṣu dadarśa sākoṭiśaḥ sphuritānvyomni trasareṇūnivātape || 3 ||

He saw, in the sky, world-eggs by the crore with coverings just like that, shimmering the way tiny specks of dust shimmer in sunlight.

43.30.4

mahākāśamahāmbhodhau mahāśūnyatvavāriṇimahāciddravabhāvotthānbudbudānarbudaprabhān || 4 ||

In the great ocean of the great space, whose water is a great emptiness, he saw bubbles rising up from the flowing nature of great consciousness, shining in their countless millions.

yatra yatroditā saṃvidyeṣāṃ yeṣāṃ yathā yathātatra tatroditaṃ rūpaṃ teṣāṃ teṣāṃ tathā tathā || 5 ||

Wherever awareness has risen, in whatever way, for whichever beings - there, in that very same way, a form has arisen for each of them, exactly matching it.

yatra yatroditā saṃvidyeṣāṃ yeṣāṃ yathā yathā | tatra tatroditaṃ rūpaṃ teṣāṃ teṣāṃ tathā tathā || 6 ||

Wherever awareness has risen, in whatever way, for whichever beings - there, in that very same way, a form has arisen for each of them, exactly matching it.

nehaiva tatra nāmordhvaṃ nādho na ca gamāgamāḥanyadeva padaṃ kiṃcittasmāddehāgamaṃ hi tat || 7 ||

There, truly, nothing is called 'up' and nothing is called 'down', and there is no coming and no going at all. It is some entirely different state - one that does not depend on having a body.

utpadyotpadyate tatra svayaṃ saṃvitsvabhāvataḥsvasaṃkalpaiḥ śamaṃ yāti bālasaṃkalpajālavat || 8 ||

There, awareness itself keeps arising again and again, on its own, by its own nature; and through its own imaginings it settles down again, just like a child's tangle of fancies settling down.

śrīrāma uvācakimadhaḥ syātkimūrdhvaṃ syātkiṃ tiryaktatra bhāsureti brūhi mama brahmannihaiva yadi na sthitam || 9 ||

Sri Rama said: Then what is below, what is above, what is to the side, in that shining space? Tell me this, O sage - since, as you say, nothing stays fixed here in the usual sense.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sasarvāvaraṇā ete mahatyantavivarjite | brahmāṇḍā bhānti durdṛṣṭervyomni keśoṇḍrako yathā || 10 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: These world-eggs, each with all its coverings, appear inside that great space which has no end at all - just as tiny hair-like specks appear to float in the sky before eyes with faulty vision.

asvātantryātpradhāvanti padārthāḥ sarva eva yat | brahmāṇḍe pārthivo bhāgastadadhastūrdhvamanyathā || 11 ||

Since no single thing here has any control of its own, everything simply moves the way it is made to move. So within a world-egg, the earthy part is called 'below' - but this is not fixed; elsewhere it could just as well be called 'above'.

pipīlikānāṃ mahatāṃ vyomni vartulaloṣṭake | daśadikkamadhaḥ pādāḥ pṛṣṭhamūrdhvamudāhṛtam || 12 ||

Think of large ants crawling all over a round ball hanging in space, moving in all ten directions. For each ant, wherever its feet are is called 'down', and its back is called 'up' - it is exactly like that here too.

vṛkṣavalmīkajālena keṣāṃciddhṛdi bhūtalam | sasurānaradaityena veṣṭitaṃ vyoma nirmalam || 13 ||

In some of these world-eggs, the earth, covered with masses of trees and anthills, and filled with gods, men and demons, sits held at the centre, surrounded by clear, open space.

saṃbhūtaṃ saha bhūtena sagrāmapuraparvatam | idaṃ kalpanabhūtena pakvākṣoṭamiva tvacā || 14 ||

This world, together with its villages, towns and mountains, has come into being along with the elements, and is wrapped in its own covering of thought - like a ripe walnut wrapped in its skin.

yathā vindhyavanābhoge prasphuranti kareṇavaḥtathā tasminparābhoge brahmāṇḍatrasareṇavaḥ || 15 ||

Just as herds of elephants move about within the vast Vindhya forest, so do these world-eggs, tiny as specks of dust, move about within that vast, supreme space.

tasminsarvaṃ tataḥ sarvaṃ tatsarvaṃ sarvataśca yattacca sarvamayo nityaṃ tathā tadaṇukaṃ prati || 16 ||

Everything is in it; everything comes from it; it is everything, and it is present on every side. That which is made of everything is eternal - and this is just as true down to a single tiny atom.

śuddhabodhamaye tasminparamālokavāridhauajasrametya gacchanti brahmaṇḍākhyāstaraṅgakāḥ || 17 ||

In that ocean of supreme light, made purely of pure awareness, waves called 'world-eggs' constantly rise up and pass away.

antaḥśūnyāḥ sthitāḥ kecitsaṃkalpakṣayarātrayaḥtaraṅgā iva toye'bdhau prohyante śūnyatārṇave || 18 ||

Some of these world-eggs are empty inside - like nights when all thought has died away - and they are swept along in the ocean of emptiness, just as waves are carried along in the water of the sea.

keṣāṃcidantaḥkalpāntaḥ pravṛtto ghargharāravaḥna śruto'nyairna ca jñātaḥ svabhāvena rasākulaiḥ || 19 ||

In some of them, deep inside, a rumbling roar has started at the end of an age - but no one else hears it or knows about it, because by nature they are absorbed in their own pleasures.

anyeṣāṃ prathamārambhe śuddhabhūṣu vijṛmbhatesargaḥ saṃsiktabījānāṃ kośe'ṅkurakalā yathā || 20 ||

In others, at their very first beginning, creation opens up on pure ground, just as a tiny sprout unfolds inside the husk of a seed once it has been watered.

mahāpralayasaṃpattau sūryārcirvidyuto'drayaḥpravṛttā galituṃ kecittāpe himakaṇā iva || 21 ||

When the great dissolution comes, some of these world-eggs are like mountains that begin to melt away under the fire of the sun and the lightning - the way snowflakes melt in the heat.

ākalpaṃ nipatantyeva kecidaprāptabhūmayaḥyāvadviśīrya jāyante tathā saṃvinmayāḥ kila || 22 ||

Some of them, never reaching any ground, simply keep falling all the way to the end of the age - until they break apart and are born again, since after all they are made purely of consciousness.

stabdhā iva sthitāḥ kecitkeśoṇḍrakamivāmbarevāyoḥ spandā ivābhānti tathā proditasaṃvidaḥ || 23 ||

Some stand frozen and still, like a tiny hair-speck floating in the sky. Others flicker and shine like gusts of wind stirring - that is how these worlds, risen out of consciousness, appear.

ācārādvedaśāstrāṇāmādya evānyathoditeārambho'pi tathānyeṣāmanityaḥ saṃsthitaḥ kramaḥ || 24 ||

In some worlds, from the very start, conduct arises different from what the Veda-scriptures teach elsewhere; and for others too, even the starting order is different - the pattern is not fixed, it changes from world to world.

kecidbrahmādipuruṣāḥ kecidviṣṇvādisargapāḥkeciccānyaprajānāthāḥ kecinnirnāthajantavaḥ || 25 ||

In some worlds the ruling being is Brahma and beings like him; in some the guardians of creation are Vishnu and others like him; in some the lords of creatures are still others; and in some the creatures have no lord at all.

kecidvicitrasargeśāḥ kecittiryaṅmayāntarāḥkecidekārṇavāpūrṇā itare janivarjitāḥ || 26 ||

In some worlds the rulers of creation are strange and wonderful; some are filled inside with animals; some are completely full of one single ocean; and others have no living beings born in them at all.

kecicchilāṅganiṣpiṇḍāḥ kecitkṛmimayāntarāḥkeciddevamayā eva kecinnaramayāntarāḥ || 27 ||

Some worlds are solid lumps made of rock; some are filled inside with worms; some are made entirely of gods; and some are filled inside with men.

kecinnityāndhakārāḍhyāstathā śīlitajantavaḥkecinnityaprakāśāḍhyāstathā śīlitajantavaḥ || 28 ||

Some worlds are full of endless darkness, and the creatures there are used to that darkness. Some worlds are full of endless light, and the creatures there are used to that light.

kecinmaśakasaṃpūrṇā udumbaraphalaśriyaḥnityaṃ śūnyāntarāḥ kecicchūnyaspandātmajantavaḥ || 29 ||

Some worlds are completely full of gnats, like a fig fruit full of tiny insects. Some worlds are always empty inside. And in some, the creatures are made of nothing but empty stirring, movement happening in emptiness itself.

sargeṇa tādṛśenānye pūrṇā ye'ntardhiyāmihakalpanāmapi nāyānti vyomapūrṇācalo yathā || 30 ||

Other worlds are full of such creation that the mind here cannot even imagine them - as still and as full as the whole sky filling a mountain.

tādṛgambarameteṣāṃ mahākāśaṃ tataṃ sthitamājīvitaṃ pragacchadbhirviṣṇvādyairyanna mīyate || 31 ||

Such is the sky of these worlds - a vast space stretched out and standing there, so immense that even Vishnu and others like him, moving through it their whole life long, cannot measure its end.

pratyekasyāṇḍagolasya sthitaḥ kaṭakaratnavatbhūtākṛṣṭikaro bhāvaḥ pārthivaḥ svasvabhāvataḥ || 32 ||

In each cosmic egg there exists, set in it like a jewel set in a bracelet, an earthy quality that by its very own nature pulls beings toward itself.

yaḥ sarvavibhavo'smākaṃ dhiyāṃ na viṣayaṃ tataḥtajjagatkathane śaktirna mamāsti mahāmate || 33 ||

This whole vast glory of ours does not fall within the reach of our minds; so, great and wise one, I have no power to describe that universe.

bhīmāndhakāragahane sumahatyaraṇye nṛtyantyadarśitaparasparameva mattāḥyakṣā yathā pravitate paramāmbare'ntarevaṃ sphuranti subahūni mahājaganti || 34 ||

As drunken yakshas dance in a vast forest thick with terrible darkness, unable to see one another, so within the great, spread-out sky countless great worlds shine, each unaware of the rest.
