श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाचतत्र ते पेततुर्देव्यौ ग्रामेऽन्तःशीतलात्मनिभोगमोक्षश्रियौ शान्ते पुंसीव विदितात्मनि ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācatatra te petaturdevyau grāme'ntaḥśītalātmanibhogamokṣaśriyau śānte puṃsīva viditātmani || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: There the two goddesses came down into that village, a place quiet and cool at heart, carrying between them the glory of both worldly joy and freedom - as if meeting inside a peaceful man who has come to know his own self.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: वहाँ वे दोनों देवियाँ उस गाँव में उतर आईं, जो अंदर से शांत और ठंडा था, और वे दोनों मिलकर भोग और मोक्ष दोनों की शोभा लिए हुए थीं, जैसे किसी शांत और आत्मज्ञानी इंसान के भीतर मिलती हैं।

कालेनैतावता लीला तेनाभ्यासेन साभवत्शुद्धज्ञानैकदेहत्वात्त्रिकालामलदर्शिनी ॥ २ ॥

kālenaitāvatā līlā tenābhyāsena sābhavatśuddhajñānaikadehatvāttrikālāmaladarśinī || 2 ||

After all that time, through that same practice, Lila became a woman made entirely of pure knowledge, and with that one pure body she could see the past, the present and the future clearly, without any mistake.

इतने समय के बाद, उसी अभ्यास से लीला पूरी तरह शुद्ध ज्ञान की बनी हुई स्त्री बन गई, और उस एक शुद्ध शरीर से वह भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्य तीनों को साफ़-साफ़, बिना किसी गलती के देख सकती थी।

अथ सस्मार सर्वास्ताः प्राक्तनीः संसृतेर्गतीःसा स्वयं स्वरसेनैव प्राग्जन्ममरणादिकाः ॥ ३ ॥

atha sasmāra sarvāstāḥ prāktanīḥ saṃsṛtergatīḥsā svayaṃ svarasenaiva prāgjanmamaraṇādikāḥ || 3 ||

Then, on her own, without anyone's help, she remembered all her earlier journeys through this world of birth and death - her past births, her past deaths, and everything else that had happened before.

फिर वह खुद ही, अपने आप, अपने पहले के जन्म-मरण के सारे सफ़र याद करने लगी - अपने पिछले जन्म, अपनी पिछली मृत्यु, और उससे पहले जो कुछ भी हुआ था, सब कुछ।

लीलोवाचदेवि देशमिमं दृष्ट्वा त्वत्प्रसादात्स्मराम्यहमिह तत्प्राक्तनं सर्वं चेष्टितं चेष्टितान्तरम् ॥ ४ ॥

līlovācadevi deśamimaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvatprasādātsmarāmyahamiha tatprāktanaṃ sarvaṃ ceṣṭitaṃ ceṣṭitāntaram || 4 ||

Lila said: Goddess, seeing this place, and by your grace, I now remember everything I did here before, one act after another, from that earlier time.

लीला ने कहा: हे देवी, इस जगह को देखकर और आपकी कृपा से, मुझे यहाँ की अपनी पहले की सारी बातें याद आ रही हैं, एक के बाद एक, जो मैंने उस समय की थीं।

इहाभूवमहं जीर्णा शिरालाङ्गी कृशा सिताब्राह्मणी शुष्कदर्भाग्रभेदरूक्षकरोदरा ॥ ५ ॥

ihābhūvamahaṃ jīrṇā śirālāṅgī kṛśā sitābrāhmaṇī śuṣkadarbhāgrabhedarūkṣakarodarā || 5 ||

Here I was once an old Brahmin woman - my body thin, my veins showing, my hair white, and my hands and belly as rough and dry as the split ends of dry darbha grass.

यहाँ मैं एक बुढ़िया ब्राह्मणी थी - मेरा शरीर दुबला था, नसें उभरी हुई थीं, बाल सफ़ेद थे, और मेरे हाथ और पेट सूखी दर्भ घास की फटी नोकों जैसे खुरदरे और रूखे थे।

भर्तुः कुलकरी भार्या दोहमन्थानशालिनी । माता सकलपुत्राणामतिथीनां प्रियंकरी ॥ ॥ ६ ॥

bhartuḥ kulakarī bhāryā dohamanthānaśālinī | mātā sakalaputrāṇāmatithīnāṃ priyaṃkarī || || 6 ||

I was the wife who carried on my husband's family line, skilled at milking the cow and churning butter. I was mother to all my sons, and I made guests happy.

मैं वह पत्नी थी जो अपने पति के कुल को आगे बढ़ाती थी, गाय दुहने और मक्खन बिलोने में माहिर थी। मैं अपने सारे बेटों की माँ थी, और मेहमानों को खुश रखती थी।

देवद्विजसतां भक्ता सिक्ताङ्गी घृतगोरसैःभर्जनी चरुकुम्भादिभाण्डोपस्करशोधिनी ॥ ७ ॥

devadvijasatāṃ bhaktā siktāṅgī ghṛtagorasaiḥbharjanī carukumbhādibhāṇḍopaskaraśodhinī || 7 ||

I was devoted to the gods, to Brahmins and to good people. My body was always wet with ghee and milk. I roasted grain, and I cleaned the cooking pots, jars and all the other vessels.

मैं देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों और अच्छे लोगों की भक्त थी। मेरा शरीर हमेशा घी और दूध से गीला रहता था। मैं अनाज भूनती थी, और खाना पकाने के बर्तन, घड़े और बाकी सामान साफ़ करती थी।

नित्यमन्नलवाक्तैककाचकम्बुप्रकोष्ठकाजामातृदुहितृभ्रातृपितृमातृप्रपूजनी ॥ ८ ॥

nityamannalavāktaikakācakambuprakoṣṭhakājāmātṛduhitṛbhrātṛpitṛmātṛprapūjanī || 8 ||

Every day, with the one glass-and-conch bangle on my wrist always smeared with bits of food, I honored my son-in-law, my daughter, my brother, my father and my mother.

हर दिन, मेरी कलाई की एक ही काँच और शंख की चूड़ी पर खाने के टुकड़े लगे रहते थे, और मैं अपने दामाद, बेटी, भाई, पिता और माँ का आदर करती थी।

आदेहं सद्मभृत्यैव प्रक्षीणदिनयामिनीवाचं चिरं चिरमिति वादिन्यनिशमाकुला ॥ ९ ॥

ādehaṃ sadmabhṛtyaiva prakṣīṇadinayāminīvācaṃ ciraṃ ciramiti vādinyaniśamākulā || 9 ||

As long as I had this body, I was nothing but a servant of the house. My days and nights wore away like that. I kept saying 'soon, soon, it will be done' - I was always restless and busy.

जब तक मेरे पास यह शरीर था, मैं घर की एक सेविका ही थी। मेरे दिन और रातें ऐसे ही बीत जाते थे। मैं बस यही कहती रहती थी 'अभी हो जाएगा, बस थोड़ी देर में' - मैं हमेशा बेचैन और व्यस्त रहती थी।

काहं क इव संसार इति स्वप्नेऽप्यसंकथाजाया श्रोत्रियमूढस्य तादृशस्यैव दुर्धियः ॥ १० ॥

kāhaṃ ka iva saṃsāra iti svapne'pyasaṃkathājāyā śrotriyamūḍhasya tādṛśasyaiva durdhiyaḥ || 10 ||

'Who am I? What is this world?' - such questions never came to me, not even in a dream. I was the wife of a man who knew the scriptures by heart but had no real wisdom, a dull-minded man, just like that.

'मैं कौन हूँ? यह संसार क्या है?' - ऐसी बातें मुझे सपने में भी नहीं सूझती थीं। मैं एक ऐसे आदमी की पत्नी थी जो शास्त्र तो जानता था पर उसमें असली समझ नहीं थी, वह एक मूर्ख आदमी था, बस ऐसा ही।

एकनिष्ठा समिच्छाकगोमयेन्धनसंचये । म्लानकम्बलसंवीतशिरालकृशगात्रिका ॥ ११ ॥

ekaniṣṭhā samicchākagomayendhanasaṃcaye | mlānakambalasaṃvītaśirālakṛśagātrikā || 11 ||

I gave my whole attention to gathering sticks, cow-dung cakes and fuel-wood. My thin body, with its veins showing, was wrapped in a worn-out blanket.

मैं पूरा ध्यान लकड़ी, गोबर के उपले और जलावन इकट्ठा करने में लगाती थी। मेरा दुबला शरीर, जिसकी नसें दिखती थीं, एक फटे-पुराने कंबल में लिपटा रहता था।

तर्णकीकर्णजाहस्थकृमिनिष्कासतत्परा । गृहशाकायनासेकसत्वराहूतकर्परा ॥ १२ ॥

tarṇakīkarṇajāhasthakṛminiṣkāsatatparā | gṛhaśākāyanāsekasatvarāhūtakarparā || 12 ||

I was busy pulling worms out from the base of the calf's ear, and quick to water the vegetables in the house garden, calling out in a hurry for the water pot.

मैं बछड़े के कान की जड़ से कीड़े निकालने में लगी रहती थी, और घर की सब्ज़ियों को पानी देने में फुर्ती दिखाती थी, जल्दी से घड़ा मंगवाती थी।

नीलनीरतरङ्गान्ततृणतर्पिततर्णिका । प्रतिक्षणं गृहद्वारकृतलेपनवर्णका ॥ १३ ॥

nīlanīrataraṅgāntatṛṇatarpitatarṇikā | pratikṣaṇaṃ gṛhadvārakṛtalepanavarṇakā || 13 ||

I fed the calf grass from the edge of the dark, rippling water, and every moment I was smearing fresh cow-dung paste on the doorway of the house.

मैं बछड़े को गहरे, लहराते पानी के किनारे की घास खिलाती थी, और हर पल घर के दरवाज़े पर ताज़ा गोबर का लेप लगाती रहती थी।

नीत्यर्थं गृहभृत्यानामादीनकृतवाच्यता । मर्यादानियमादब्धेर्वेलेवानिशमच्युता ॥ १४ ॥

nītyarthaṃ gṛhabhṛtyānāmādīnakṛtavācyatā | maryādāniyamādabdhervelēvāniśamacyutā || 14 ||

For the sake of discipline, I would scold the timid servants of the house. Like the shore that never lets the sea cross its fixed line, I never departed, day or night, from my own rules and limits.

अनुशासन के लिए, मैं घर के डरपोक नौकरों को डाँटती थी। जैसे किनारा समुद्र को अपनी तय सीमा कभी पार नहीं करने देता, वैसे ही मैं भी दिन-रात अपने नियमों और सीमाओं से कभी नहीं हटती थी।

जीर्णपर्णसवर्णैककर्णदोलाधिरूढया । काष्ठताड्यजराभीतजीववृत्त्येव चिह्निता ॥ १५ ॥

jīrṇaparṇasavarṇaikakarṇadolādhirūḍhayā | kāṣṭhatāḍyajarābhītajīvavṛttyeva cihnitā || 15 ||

I wore a single earring, the color of a dried leaf, swinging from my ear, and I looked just like some old, frightened creature that has been beaten with a stick.

मैं एक ही कान में सूखे पत्ते के रंग की बाली पहनती थी जो झूलती रहती थी, और मैं बिल्कुल किसी ऐसे बूढ़े, डरे हुए जीव जैसी दिखती थी जिसे डंडे से पीटा गया हो।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा संचरन्ती सा शिखरिग्रामकोटरे । संचरन्त्याः सरस्वत्या दर्शयामास सस्मयम् ॥ १६ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktvā saṃcarantī sā śikharigrāmakoṭare | saṃcarantyāḥ sarasvatyā darśayāmāsa sasmayam || 16 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having said this, Lila, walking about in a hollow of that mountain village, showed all this, smiling in wonder, to Saraswati, who was walking along beside her.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: यह कहकर, लीला, उस पहाड़ी गाँव के एक गड्ढे-नुमा हिस्से में घूमती हुई, यह सब कुछ आश्चर्य से मुस्कुराते हुए सरस्वती को दिखाने लगी, जो उसके साथ-साथ चल रही थीं।

इयं मे पाटलाखण्डमण्डिता पुष्पवाटिका । इयं मे पुष्पितोद्यानमण्डपाशोकवाटिका ॥ १७ ॥

iyam me pāṭalākhaṇḍamaṇḍitā puṣpavāṭikā | iyam me puṣpitodyānamanḍapāśokavāṭikā || 17 ||

This is my flower garden, decorated with a cluster of patala flowers. This is my garden with its flowering bower of ashoka trees.

यह मेरा फूलों का बगीचा है, जो पाटल फूलों के झुरमुट से सजा है। यह मेरा वह बगीचा है जिसमें अशोक के फूलों वाला मंडप खिला हुआ है।

इयं पुष्कीरणीतीरद्रुमाऽऽग्रन्थिततर्णका । इयं सा कर्णिकानाम्नी तर्णिका मुक्तपर्णिका ॥ १८ ॥

iyam puṣkīrṇītīradrumā'āgranthitatarṇakā | iyam sā karṇikānāmnī tarṇikā muktaparṇikā || 18 ||

This is the pond, where my calf is tied to a tree on the bank. And this is that raft named Karnika, now bare, its leaf covering gone.

यह वह तालाब है, जहाँ मेरा बछड़ा किनारे के पेड़ से बँधा रहता था। और यह वह बेड़ा है जिसे कर्णिका कहते थे, अब वह खाली है, उसका पत्तों का ढकना उतर गया है।

इयं सा मेऽलसाकीर्णा वराकी जलहारिका । अद्याष्टमं दिनं बाष्पक्लिन्नाक्षी परिरोदिति ॥ १९ ॥

iyam sā me'lasākīrṇā varākī jalahārikā | adyāṣṭamam dinaṃ bāṣpaklinnākṣī pariroditi || 19 ||

This is my poor water-carrier, worn out and weary. Today is the eighth day she has been crying, her eyes wet with tears.

यह मेरी बेचारी पानी भरने वाली औरत है, थकी-हारी। आज आठवाँ दिन है जब से वह रो रही है, उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भीगी हुई हैं।

इह देवि मया भुक्तमिहोषितमिह स्थितम् । इह सुप्तमिहापीतमिह दत्तमिहाहृतम् ॥ २० ॥

iha devi mayā bhuktaṃ ihoṣitam iha sthitam | iha suptam ihāpītam iha dattam ihāhṛtam || 20 ||

Goddess, here I ate my food, here I lived, here I stood. Here I slept, here I drank, here I gave things away, and here I received them.

हे देवी, यहाँ मैंने खाना खाया, यहाँ रहती थी, यहाँ खड़ी होती थी। यहाँ सोती थी, यहाँ पीती थी, यहाँ चीज़ें देती थी, और यहाँ चीज़ें लेती थी।

एष मे ज्येष्ठशर्माख्यः पुत्रो रोदिति मन्दिरे । एषा मे जङ्गले धेनुर्दोग्ध्री चरति शाद्वलम् ॥ २१ ॥

eṣa me jyeṣṭhaśarmākhyḥ putro roditi mandire | eṣā me jaṅgale dhenurdogdhrī carati śādvalam || 21 ||

This is my eldest son, named Jyeshtha-sharma, crying inside the house. And this is my milk-giving cow, grazing on the green grass out in the wild.

यह मेरा सबसे बड़ा बेटा है, जिसका नाम ज्येष्ठशर्मा है, घर के अंदर रो रहा है। और यह मेरी दूध देने वाली गाय है, जो जंगल में हरी घास चर रही है।

गृहे वसन्तदाहाय रूक्षक्षारविधूसरम् । स्वदेहमिव पञ्चाक्षं पश्येमं प्रघणं मम ॥ २२ ॥

gṛhe vasantadāhāya rūkṣakṣāravidhūsaram | svadehamiva pañcākṣaṃ paśyemam praghaṇam mama || 22 ||

Look at this hearth of mine in the house, grey with dry ash from the spring fires - like my own body, worn down in the same way.

मेरे घर की इस चूल्हे को देखो, वसंत की आग से सूखी राख से धूसर हुई, बिल्कुल मेरे अपने शरीर की तरह, वैसे ही घिसी हुई।

तुम्बीलताभिरुग्राभिः पुष्टाभिरिव वेष्टितम् । महानसस्थानमिदं मम देहमिवापरम् ॥ २३ ॥

tumbīlatābhirugrābhiḥ puṣṭābhiriva veṣṭitam | mahānasasthānamidaṃ mama dehamivāparam || 23 ||

This is my kitchen, wrapped round with thick, healthy gourd-vines - it is like another body of mine.

यह मेरी रसोई है, जो मोटी, हरी-भरी लौकी की बेलों से लिपटी हुई है, यह मानो मेरा एक और शरीर है।

एते रोदनताम्राक्षा बन्धवो भुवि बन्धनम् । अङ्गदार्पितरुद्राक्षा आहरन्त्यनलेन्धनम् ॥ २४ ॥

ete rodanatāmrākṣā bandhavo bhuvi bandhanam | aṅgadārpitrudraakṣā āharantyanalendhanam || 24 ||

These are my relatives, their eyes red from crying - a bond that ties me to this world. Wearing rudraksha beads on their arms, they are gathering wood for the fire.

ये मेरे रिश्तेदार हैं, रोने से जिनकी आँखें लाल हैं, यही वह बंधन है जो मुझे इस दुनिया से बाँधे रखता है। अपनी बाँहों पर रुद्राक्ष पहने हुए, ये आग के लिए लकड़ी इकट्ठा कर रहे हैं।

अनारतं शिलाकच्छे गुच्छाच्छोटनकारिभिः । तरङ्गैः स्थगिताकारं स्पृष्टतीरलतादलैः ॥ २५ ॥

anārataṃ śilākacche gucchācchoṭanakāribhiḥ | taraṅgaiḥ sthagitākāraṃ spṛṣṭatīralatādalaiḥ || 25 ||

Waves constantly covered it, shaking loose clusters of flowers on the rocky bank and touching the leaves of the creepers along the shore.

पत्थरीले किनारे पर लहरें उसे लगातार ढके रहती थीं, फूलों के गुच्छों को झकझोर कर गिरा देती थीं और किनारे की लताओं के पत्तों को छूती थीं।

सीकराकीर्णपर्यन्तशाद्वलस्थलसल्लतैःशिलाफलहकास्फालप्हेनिलोत्पलसीकरैः ॥ २६ ॥

sīkarākīrṇaparyantaśādvalasthalasallataiḥśilāphalahakāsphālaphenilotpalasīkaraiḥ || 26 ||

The grassy ground at its edges was covered with spray and thick with creepers, and where the water struck the rocks, drops of foam flew off the lotuses.

किनारे की घास वाली ज़मीन छींटों से भरी थी और लताओं से घिरी थी, और जहाँ पानी चट्टानों से टकराता था वहाँ कमलों से झाग के छींटे उड़ते थे।

तुषारीकृतमध्याह्नदिवाकरकरोत्करैःफुल्लपुष्पोत्करासारप्रणादोत्कटटद्रुमैः ॥ २७ ॥

tuṣārīkṛtamadhyāhnadivākarakarotkaraiḥphullapuṣpotkarāsārapraṇādotkataṭadrumaiḥ || 27 ||

Its spray turned the noon sun's rays into mist, and the trees on its bank roared with the endless shower of full-blown flowers pouring down.

इसके छींटों ने दोपहर की धूप को धुंध में बदल दिया था, और किनारे के पेड़ खिले हुए फूलों की लगातार बरसात से गूँज रहे थे।

विद्रुमैरिव संक्रान्तफुल्लकिंशुककान्तिभिःव्याप्तया पुष्पराशीनां समुल्लासनकारिभिः ॥ २८ ॥

vidrumairiva saṃkrāntaphullakiṃśukakāntibhiḥvyāptayā puṣparāśīnāṃ samullāsanakāribhiḥ || 28 ||

It was covered, as if with coral, by the reflected glow of the blooming flame-of-the-forest flowers, making the heaps of blossoms around it sparkle brighter.

मानो मूँगे से ढका हो, ऐसे खिले हुए पलाश के फूलों की लाल चमक उस पर झलकती थी, जिससे चारों तरफ फूलों के ढेर और चमक उठते थे।

उह्यमानफलापूरसुव्यग्रग्रामबालयामहाकलकलावर्तमत्तया ग्रामकुल्यया ॥ २९ ॥

uhyamānaphalāpūrasuvyagragrāmabālayāmahākalakalāvartamattayā grāmakulyayā || 29 ||

This was the village canal, alive with village girls busy over the fruit drifting along it, wild with the loud gurgling of its whirlpools.

यह गाँव की नहर थी - बहते फलों के पीछे भागती गाँव की लड़कियों से गुलज़ार, और अपने भँवरों की तेज़ गड़गड़ाहट से मानो मस्त।

वेष्टितस्तरलास्फालजलधौततलोपलःघनपत्रतरुच्छन्नच्छायासततशीतलः ॥ ३० ॥

veṣṭitastaralāsphālajaladhautatalopalaḥghanapatratarucchannacchāyāsatataśītalaḥ || 30 ||

This water surrounded the pavilion, its stone floor washed clean by the splashing ripples, and it stayed cool always, in the shade hidden under trees thick with leaves.

यह पानी उस मंडप को घेरे हुए था, जिसका पत्थर का फर्श लहरों के छींटों से धुला हुआ साफ़ था, और घने पत्तों वाले पेड़ों की छाया में वह हमेशा ठंडा रहता था।

अयमालक्ष्यते फुल्ललतावलनसुन्दरःदलद्गुलुच्छकाच्छन्नगवाक्षो गृहमण्डपः ॥ ३१ ॥

ayamālakṣyate phullalatāvalanasundaraḥdaladgulucchakācchannagavākṣo gṛhamaṇḍapaḥ || 31 ||

Look, here it is - the garden pavilion, beautiful with blooming creepers wound around it, its windows covered over by bursting clusters of flowers.

देखो, यही है वह मंडप - खिली हुई लताओं से लिपटा हुआ सुंदर, जिसकी खिड़कियाँ फूलों के गुच्छों से ढकी हुई हैं।

अत्र मे संस्थितो भर्ता जीवाकाशतयाकृतिःचतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तमेखलाया भुवः पतिः ॥ ३२ ॥

atra me saṃsthito bhartā jīvākāśatayā'kṛtiḥcatuḥsamudraparyantamekhalāyā bhuvaḥ patiḥ || 32 ||

Here my husband lives, without a body, present only as the space of awareness - lord of the earth, whose realm reaches out like a belt to the four oceans.

यहीं, बिना किसी शरीर के, सिर्फ़ चेतना के रूप में, मेरे पति रहते हैं - वह धरती के राजा हैं जिनका राज्य एक कमरबंद की तरह चारों समुद्रों तक फैला है।

आ स्मृतं पूर्वमेतेन किलासीदभिवाञ्छितम्शीघ्रं स्यामेव राजेति तीव्रसंवेगधर्मिणा ॥ ३३ ॥

ā smṛtaṃ pūrvametena kilāsīdabhivāñchitamśīghraṃ syāmeva rājeti tīvrasaṃvegadharmiṇā || 33 ||

Long ago, driven by intense, eager longing, he had wished, 'let me quickly become a king' - that was what he wanted.

पहले उन्होंने बड़ी बेचैन इच्छा से यही चाहा था - 'मैं जल्दी राजा बन जाऊँ' - यही उनकी गहरी चाहत थी।

दिनैरष्टभिरेवासौ तेन राज्यं समृद्धिमत्चिरकालप्रत्ययदं प्राप्तवान्परमेश्वरि ॥ ३४ ॥

dinairaṣṭabhirevāsau tena rājyaṃ samṛddhimatcirakālapratyayadaṃ prāptavānparameśvari || 34 ||

O supreme goddess, in just eight days that wish gave him a rich, prosperous kingdom - one that felt as if it had lasted a very long time.

हे परम देवी, बस आठ दिनों में ही उस इच्छा से उन्हें एक समृद्ध राज्य मिल गया - ऐसा राज्य जो मानो बहुत लंबे समय तक चला हो।

अत्रासौ भर्तृजीवो मे स्थितो व्योम्नि गृहे नृपःअदृश्यः खे यथा वायुरामोदो वानिले यथा ॥ ३५ ॥

atrāsau bhartṛjīvo me sthito vyomni gṛhe nṛpaḥadṛśyaḥ khe yathā vāyurāmodo vānile yathā || 35 ||

Here, in this house in the sky, that king - my husband's life - dwells, unseen, as wind is unseen in the sky, as fragrance is unseen in the breeze.

यहीं, आकाश के इस घर में, वह राजा - मेरे पति का जीवन - रहता है, अदृश्य, जैसे आकाश में हवा दिखाई नहीं देती, जैसे बयार में खुशबू दिखाई नहीं देती।

इहैवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रान्ते तद्व्योम्न्येव पदं स्थितम्मद्भर्तृराज्यं समवगतं योजनकोटिभाक् ॥ ३६ ॥

ihaivāṅguṣṭhamātrānte tadvyomnyeva padaṃ sthitammadbhartṛrājyaṃ samavagataṃ yojanakoṭibhāk || 36 ||

Right here, in a space no bigger than a thumb, in that very sky, lies the place we know as my husband's kingdom, spread across ten million yojanas.

यहीं, अंगूठे जितनी छोटी जगह में, उसी आकाश में, वह जगह है - मेरे पति का राज्य, जिसे हम करोड़ों योजन तक फैला हुआ जानते हैं।

आवां खमेव स्वस्थं च भर्तृराज्यं ममेश्वरिपूर्णं सहस्रैः शैलानां महामायेयमातता ॥ ३७ ॥

āvāṃ khameva svasthaṃ ca bhartṛrājyaṃ mameśvaripūrṇaṃ sahasraiḥ śailānāṃ mahāmāyeyamātatā || 37 ||

O goddess, the two of us are now nothing but empty space, while my husband's kingdom is full of thousands of mountains - this is the great illusion spread out before us.

हे देवी, हम दोनों अब बस खाली आकाश हैं, और मेरे पति का राज्य हज़ारों पहाड़ों से भरा है - यही वह बड़ी माया है जो फैली हुई है।

तद्देवि भर्तृनगरं पूनर्गन्तुं ममेप्सितम्तदेहि तत्र गच्छावः किं दूरं व्यवसायिनाम् ॥ ३८ ॥

taddevi bhartṛnagaraṃ pūnargantuṃ mamepsitamtadehi tatra gacchāvaḥ kiṃ dūraṃ vyavasāyinām || 38 ||

So, goddess, I want to go again to my husband's city. Come, let us go there - what is far for people who are determined?

इसलिए, देवी, मैं फिर से अपने पति के नगर जाना चाहती हूँ। चलो, वहाँ चलते हैं - जो लोग ठान लेते हैं उनके लिए दूरी क्या मायने रखती है?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाचैत्युक्त्वा प्रणता देवीं सा प्रविश्याशु मण्डपम्विहंगीव तया साकं पुप्लुवे सिनिभं नमः ॥ ३९ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaityuktvā praṇatā devīṃ sā praviśyāśu maṇḍapamvihaṃgīva tayā sākaṃ pupluve sinibhaṃ namaḥ || 39 ||

Vasishtha said: Saying this, she bowed to the goddess, quickly entered the pavilion, and flew up into the sky together with her, like a bird.

श्री वसिष्ठ बोले: यह कहकर उसने देवी को प्रणाम किया, जल्दी से मंडप में गई, और उसके साथ पक्षी की तरह आकाश में उड़ गई।

भिन्नाञ्जनचयप्रख्यं सौम्यैकार्णवसुन्दरम्नारायणाङ्गसदृशं भृङ्गपृष्ठामलच्छवि ॥ ४० ॥

bhinnāñjanacayaprakhyaṃ saumyaikārṇavasundaramnārāyaṇāṅgasadṛśaṃ bhṛṅgapṛṣṭhāmalacchavi || 40 ||

That sky looked like a mass of broken black collyrium, beautiful and calm like one single ocean, resembling the body of Narayana, its clear sheen like the back of a black bee.

वह आकाश टूटे हुए काजल के ढेर जैसा दिखता था, एक शांत समुद्र जैसा सुंदर, नारायण के शरीर जैसा, भँवरे की पीठ जैसी उसकी साफ़ चमक थी।

मेघमार्गमतिक्रम्य वातस्कन्धावनिं तथासौरमार्गमथाक्रम्य चन्द्रमार्गमतीत्य च ॥ ४१ ॥

meghamārgamatikramya vātaskandhāvaniṃ tathāsauramārgamathākramya candramārgamatītya ca || 41 ||

Passing beyond the region of the clouds, and beyond the layer of wind, then crossing the path of the sun, and going past the path of the moon,

बादलों के रास्ते को पार करके, फिर हवा की परत को, फिर सूरज के रास्ते को लांघकर, और चाँद के रास्ते को भी पार करके,

धुवमार्गोत्तरं गत्वा साध्यानां मार्गमेत्य चसिद्धानां समतीत्योर्वीमुल्लङ्घ्य स्वर्गमण्डलम् ॥ ४२ ॥

dhuvamārgottaraṃ gatvā sādhyānāṃ mārgametya casiddhānāṃ samatītyorvīmullaṅghya svargamaṇḍalam || 42 ||

going beyond the path of Dhruva the pole star, reaching the path of the Sadhyas, crossing that of the Siddhas, passing over the earth, and going beyond the realm of heaven,

ध्रुव तारे के रास्ते से आगे जाकर, साध्यों के रास्ते तक पहुँचकर, सिद्धों के रास्ते को भी पार करके, धरती को लांघकर और स्वर्ग को भी पार करके,

ब्रह्मलोकोत्तरं गत्वा तुषितानां च मण्डलम्गोलोकं शिवलोकं च पितृलोकमतीत्य च ॥ ४३ ॥

brahmalokottaraṃ gatvā tuṣitānāṃ ca maṇḍalamgolokaṃ śivalokaṃ ca pitṛlokamatītya ca || 43 ||

going beyond Brahmaloka, and the realm of the Tushitas, passing beyond Goloka and Shivaloka, and beyond the world of the ancestors,

ब्रह्मलोक से आगे जाकर, तुषितों के लोक को पार करके, गोलोक और शिवलोक को भी लांघकर, और पितृलोक को भी पार करके,

विदेहानां सदेहानां लोकानुत्तीर्य दूरगम्दूराद्दूरमथो गत्वा किंचिद्बुद्धा बभूव सा ॥ ४४ ॥

videhānāṃ sadehānāṃ lokānuttīrya dūragamdūrāddūramatho gatvā kiṃcidbuddhā babhūva sā || 44 ||

crossing the far-reaching worlds of beings without bodies and beings with bodies, and going farther and farther still, she slowly began to notice something.

बिना शरीर वाले और शरीर वाले जीवों के दूर-दूर तक फैले लोकों को पार करके, और और भी आगे जाकर, वह धीरे-धीरे कुछ महसूस करने लगी।

पश्चादालोकयामास समतीतं नभस्थलम्यावन्न किंचिच्चन्द्रार्कताराद्यालक्ष्यते ह्यधः ॥ ४५ ॥

paścādālokayāmāsa samatītaṃ nabhasthalamyāvanna kiṃciccandrārkatārādyālakṣyate hyadhaḥ || 45 ||

Then she looked back at the stretch of sky she had crossed - to the point where nothing at all, not the moon, the sun, or the stars, could be seen below anymore.

फिर उसने पीछे मुड़कर उस आकाश को देखा जो वह पार कर आई थी - वहाँ तक जहाँ अब नीचे न चाँद, न सूरज, न तारे, कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था।

तमस्तिमितगम्भीरमाशाकुहरपूरकमेकार्णवोदरप्रख्यं शिलोदरघनं स्थितम् ॥ ४६ ॥

tamastimitagambhīramāśākuharapūrakamekārṇavodaraprakhyaṃ śilodaraghanaṃ sthitam || 46 ||

There lay a darkness - still, deep, filling the hollow of every direction, like the inside of one vast ocean, dense as the inside of solid rock.

वहाँ एक अंधेरा था - शांत, गहरा, हर दिशा के खोखलेपन को भरने वाला, मानो एक विशाल समुद्र का पेट हो, पत्थर के अंदर जैसा घना।

लीलोवाचतद्देवि भास्करादीनां क्वाधस्तेजो गतं वदशिलाजट्हरनिष्पन्दं मुष्टिग्राह्यं तमः कुतः ॥ ४७ ॥

līlovācataddevi bhāskarādīnāṃ kvādhastejo gataṃ vadaśilājaṭharaniṣpandaṃ muṣṭigrāhyaṃ tamaḥ kutaḥ || 47 ||

Lila said: Tell me, goddess, where below has the light of the sun and the rest gone? Where has this darkness come from, so still it feels like the inside of rock, thick enough to grab in a fist?

लीला ने कहा: देवी, बताओ, नीचे सूरज वगैरह की रोशनी कहाँ चली गई? यह अंधेरा कहाँ से आया, जो पत्थर के अंदर जैसा एकदम स्थिर है, और मुट्ठी में पकड़ा जा सके इतना घना?

श्रीदेव्युवाचेतावतीमिमां व्योम्नः पदवीमागतासि भोःअर्कादीन्यपि तेजांसि यतो दृश्यन्त एव नो ॥ ४८ ॥

śrīdevyuvācaetāvatīmimāṃ vyomnaḥ padavīmāgatāsi bhoḥarkādīnyapi tejāṃsi yato dṛśyanta eva no || 48 ||

The goddess said: You have come this far along the path of the sky - far enough that even the light of the sun and the rest can no longer be seen by us at all.

देवी ने कहा: तुम आकाश के रास्ते पर इतनी दूर आ गई हो कि अब यहाँ से सूरज वगैरह की रोशनी भी हमें बिल्कुल दिखाई नहीं देती।

यथा महान्धकूपाधः खद्योतो नावलोक्यतेपृष्ठगेन तथेहातो नाधः सूर्योऽवलोक्यते ॥ ४९ ॥

yathā mahāndhakūpādhaḥ khadyoto nāvalokyatepṛṣṭhagena tathehāto nādhaḥ sūryo'valokyate || 49 ||

Just as someone standing at the top cannot see a firefly deep down inside a great pitch-dark well, in the same way, from here, we cannot see the sun below us at all.

जैसे कोई ऊपर खड़ा आदमी किसी बहुत गहरे अंधेरे कुएँ के तल में जुगनू को नहीं देख पाता, वैसे ही यहाँ से हमें नीचे सूरज बिल्कुल नहीं दिखता।

अहो नु पदवीं दूरमावामेतामुपागतेसूर्योऽप्यधोणुकणवन्न मनागपि लक्ष्यते ॥ ५० ॥

aho nu padavīṃ dūramāvāmetāmupāgatesūryo'pyadhoṇukaṇavanna manāgapi lakṣyate || 50 ||

Oh, look how far we two have come on this path. Even the sun below now looks like a tiny speck of dust, and we cannot make it out even a little.

अरे, देखो हम दोनों इस रास्ते पर कितनी दूर आ गए हैं। नीचे सूरज भी अब धूल के एक कण जैसा लगता है, और वह ज़रा भी दिखाई नहीं देता।

इत उत्तरमन्या स्यात्पदवी का नु कीदृशीकथं च मातरेतव्या कथ्यतामिति देवि मे ॥ ५१ ॥

ita uttaramanyā syātpadavī kā nu kīdṛśīkathaṃ ca mātaretavyā kathyatāmiti devi me || 51 ||

Beyond this point, is there some other path, and what is it like? And how is it to be travelled, mother? Tell me this, goddess.

यहाँ से आगे क्या कोई और रास्ता है, और वह कैसा है? और उस पर कैसे चला जाए, माँ? यह मुझे बताइए, देवी।

श्रीदेव्युवाचैत उत्तरमग्रे ते ब्रह्माण्डपुटकरपरम्यस्य चन्द्रादयो नाम धूलिलेशाः समुत्थिताः ॥ ५२ ॥

śrīdevyuvācaita uttaramagre te brahmāṇḍapuṭakarparamyasya candrādayo nāma dhūlileśāḥ samutthitāḥ || 52 ||

The goddess said: Here is what comes next for you, ahead. Inside the shell of this cosmic egg, the moon and the other heavenly bodies are nothing but tiny specks of dust that have appeared.

देवी ने कहा: आगे तुम्हारे लिए यही है। इस ब्रह्मांड रूपी अंडे के खोल के भीतर, चाँद और बाकी सब चीज़ें धूल के छोटे-छोटे कणों जैसी ही उठी हैं।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाचैति प्रकथयन्त्यौ ते प्राप्ते ब्रह्माण्डकरपरम्भ्रमर्याविव शैलस्य कुड्यं निबिडमण्डपम् ॥ ५३ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaiti prakathayantyau te prāpte brahmāṇḍakarparambhramaryāviva śailasya kuḍyaṃ nibiḍamaṇḍapam || 53 ||

Vasishtha said: Talking like this, the two of them reached the shell of the cosmic egg, like two bees reaching the thick wall of a mountain hall.

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: ऐसी बातें करते हुए, वे दोनों ब्रह्मांड रूपी अंडे के खोल तक पहुँच गईं, जैसे दो मधुमक्खियाँ किसी पहाड़ी भवन की मोटी दीवार तक पहुँचती हैं।

अक्लेशेनैव ते तस्मान्निर्गते गगनादिवनिश्चयस्थं हि यद्वस्तु तद्वज्रगुरु नेतरत् ॥ ५४ ॥

akleśenaiva te tasmānnirgate gaganādivaniścayasthaṃ hi yadvastu tadvajraguru netarat || 54 ||

The two of them passed out through it easily, without any strain, as if it were only open sky. For a thing that stands firm in certainty is as unbreakable as a diamond; nothing else is.

वे दोनों बिना किसी मेहनत या रुकावट के उसमें से यूँ निकल गईं, जैसे वह केवल खुला आकाश हो। क्योंकि जो चीज़ पक्के निश्चय पर टिकी होती है, वह हीरे जितनी अटूट होती है, कोई और चीज़ इतनी अटूट नहीं होती।

निरावरणविज्ञाना सा ददर्श ततस्ततम्जलाद्यावरणं पारे ब्रह्माण्डस्यातिभासुरम् ॥ ५५ ॥

nirāvaraṇavijñānā sā dadarśa tatastatamjalādyāvaraṇaṃ pāre brahmāṇḍasyātibhāsuram || 55 ||

Her knowledge now free of every covering, she looked around on every side and saw, beyond the cosmic egg, the very bright layers of covering that begin with water.

उसका ज्ञान अब हर परदे से मुक्त हो चुका था, उसने चारों ओर देखा और ब्रह्मांड रूपी अंडे के पार, पानी से शुरू होने वाली बहुत चमकीली परतें देखीं।

ब्रह्माण्डाद्दशगुणतस्तोयं तत्र व्यवस्थितमास्थितं वेष्टयित्वा तु त्वगिवाक्षोटपृष्ठगा ॥ ५६ ॥

brahmāṇḍāddaśaguṇatastoyaṃ tatra vyavasthitamāsthitaṃ veṣṭayitvā tu tvagivākṣoṭapṛṣṭhagā || 56 ||

There, water ten times the size of the cosmic egg stood wrapped around it, covering it completely, like the shell on the outside of a walnut.

वहाँ, ब्रह्मांड रूपी अंडे से दस गुना बड़ा पानी उसे चारों ओर से लपेटकर पूरी तरह ढके हुए खड़ा था, जैसे अखरोट के ऊपर उसका छिलका होता है।

तस्माद्दशगुणो वह्निस्तस्माद्दशगुणोऽनिलःततो दशगुणं व्योम ततः परममम्बरम् ॥ ५७ ॥

tasmāddaśaguṇo vahnistasmāddaśaguṇo'nilaḥtato daśaguṇaṃ vyoma tataḥ paramamambaram || 57 ||

Beyond that water, fire is ten times as large. Beyond that fire, air is ten times as large. Beyond that air, space is ten times as large. And beyond that space is the highest sky of all.

उस पानी से आगे, आग उससे दस गुनी बड़ी है। उस आग से आगे, हवा दस गुनी बड़ी है। उस हवा से आगे, आकाश दस गुना बड़ा है। और उस आकाश से आगे सबसे ऊँचा आकाश है।

तस्माद्दशगुणो वह्निस्तस्माद्दशगुणोऽनिलःततो दशगुणं व्योम ततः परममम्बरम् ॥ ५८ ॥

tasmāddaśaguṇo vahnistasmāddaśaguṇo'nilaḥtato daśaguṇaṃ vyoma tataḥ paramamambaram || 58 ||

Beyond that water, fire is ten times as large. Beyond that fire, air is ten times as large. Beyond that air, space is ten times as large. And beyond that space is the highest sky of all.

उस पानी से आगे, आग उससे दस गुनी बड़ी है। उस आग से आगे, हवा दस गुनी बड़ी है। उस हवा से आगे, आकाश दस गुना बड़ा है। और उस आकाश से आगे सबसे ऊँचा आकाश है।

तस्मिन्परमके व्योम्नि मध्याद्यन्तविकल्पनाःन काश्चन समुद्यन्ति वन्ध्यापुत्रकथा इव ॥ ५९ ॥

tasminparamake vyomni madhyādyantavikalpanāḥna kāścana samudyanti vandhyāputrakathā iva || 59 ||

In that highest sky, no idea of a middle, a beginning, or an end ever arises at all, just like there can be no story about the son of a woman who cannot bear children.

उस सबसे ऊँचे आकाश में, न बीच का, न शुरुआत का, न अंत का कोई खयाल कभी उठता है, जैसे किसी बाँझ स्त्री के बेटे की कोई कहानी नहीं हो सकती।

केवलं विततं शान्तं तदनादि गतभ्रममाद्यन्तमध्यरहितं महत्यात्मनि तिष्ठति ॥ ६० ॥

kevalaṃ vitataṃ śāntaṃ tadanādi gatabhramamādyantamadhyarahitaṃ mahatyātmani tiṣṭhati || 60 ||

That alone remains, spread out everywhere, at peace, without a beginning, free of all confusion, without a start, an end, or a middle. It rests in the great Self.

बस वही बचता है, हर जगह फैला हुआ, शांत, बिना किसी शुरुआत के, हर भ्रम से मुक्त, बिना आदि, अंत या बीच के। वह महान आत्मा में टिका रहता है।
