श्रीराम उवाच । वज्राङ्गसाराद्ब्रह्माण्डकुड्यान्निबिडमण्डलात् । कोटियोजनसंपुष्टात्कथं ते निर्गतेऽबले ॥ १ ॥

śrīrāma uvāca | vajrāṅgasārādbrahmāṇḍakuḍyānniḍamaṇḍalāt | koṭiyojanasaṃpuṣṭātkathaṃ te nirgate'bale || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: O frail woman, the wall of the cosmic egg is hard as solid diamond, thick and dense, a hundred million yojanas thick — how did you get out of it?

श्रीराम ने कहा: हे कोमल स्त्री, ब्रह्माण्ड की दीवार हीरे जैसी कठोर, घनी और मोटी है, करोड़ों योजन मोटी है — तुम इसमें से बाहर कैसे निकलीं?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । क्व ब्रह्माण्डं क्व तद्भित्तिः क्वात्रासौ वज्रसारता । किलावश्यं स्थिते देव्यावन्तःपुरवराम्बरे ॥ २ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kva brahmāṇḍaṃ kva tadbhittiḥ kvātrāsau vajrasāratā | kilāvaśyaṃ sthite devyāvantḥpuravarāmbare || 2 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Where is the cosmic egg, where is its wall, where is this diamond hardness here? All this surely holds only so long as the queen is taken to be standing in the open space of her fine inner chamber.

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा: कहाँ है ब्रह्माण्ड, कहाँ है उसकी दीवार, कहाँ है यह हीरे जैसी कठोरता? यह सब तभी तक सच मानी जाती है जब तक रानी अपने सुंदर अंतःपुर के आकाश में खड़ी मानी जाती है।

तस्मिन्नेव गिरिग्रामे तस्मिन्नेवालयाम्बरे । ब्राह्मणः स वसिष्ठाख्य आस्वादयति राजताम् ॥ ३ ॥

tasminneva girigrāme tasminnevālayāmbare | brāhmaṇaḥ sa vasiṣṭhākhya āsvādayati rājatām || 3 ||

In that same mountain village, in the space of that same house, the brahmin named Vasishtha is tasting the life of a king.

उसी पहाड़ी गाँव में, उसी घर के भीतर के आकाश में, वसिष्ठ नाम का वह ब्राह्मण राजा होने का सुख भोग रहा है।

तमेव मण्डपाकाशकोणकं शून्यमात्रकम् । चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तं भूतलं सोऽनुभूतवान् ॥ ४ ॥

tameva maṇḍapākāśakoṇakaṃ śūnyamātrakam | caturḥsamudraparyantaṃ bhūtalaṃ so'nubhūtavān || 4 ||

That same empty corner of space in the pavilion — mere emptiness — he experienced as the whole earth stretching to the four oceans.

मंडप के आकाश का वही खाली कोना, जो केवल शून्य था, उसने ऐसा अनुभव किया मानो वह चारों समुद्रों तक फैली हुई सारी पृथ्वी हो।

आकाशात्मनि भूपीठं तस्मिंस्तद्राजपत्तनम् । राजसद्मानुभवति स च सा चाप्यरुन्धती ॥ ५ ॥

ākāśātmani bhūpīṭhaṃ tasmins tadrājapattanaṃ | rājasadmānubhavati sa ca sā cāpyarundhatī || 5 ||

Within that same space, he sees the surface of the earth, and in it that royal city; he and Arundhati both experience themselves living in the royal palace.

उसी आकाश के भीतर उसे पृथ्वी की सतह दिखती है, और उसमें वह राजधानी नगर; वह और अरुन्धती दोनों राजमहल में रहने का अनुभव करते हैं।

लीलाभिधाना सा जाता तया च ज्ञप्तिरर्चिताज्ञप्त्या सह समुल्लङ्घ्य खमाश्चर्यमनोहरम् ॥ ६ ॥

līlābhidhānā sā jātā tayā ca jñaptirarcitājñaptyā saha samullaṅghya khamāścaryamanoharam || 6 ||

She came to be called Lila, and together with her went Awareness itself, honoured Awareness, the two of them crossing the wonderful, charming sky.

वह लीला नाम से जानी गई, और उसके साथ स्वयं चेतना भी थी, पूजनीय चेतना, दोनों उस अद्भुत, मनोहर आकाश को पार करते हुए।

प्रादेशमात्रे नभसि सा तत्रैवगृहोदरेब्रह्माण्डान्तरमासाद्य गिरिग्रामकमन्दिरे ॥ ७ ॥

prādeśamātre nabhasi sā tatraivagṛhodarebrahmāṇḍāntaramāsādya girigrāmakamandire || 7 ||

In a space no bigger than a hand's span, right there inside that same house, she reached another universe, within the shrine of that mountain village.

आकाश के एक बित्ते-भर हिस्से में, उसी घर के भीतर, उसने पहाड़ी गाँव के उस मंदिर में एक दूसरा ब्रह्माण्ड पा लिया।

ब्रह्माण्डात्परिनिर्गत्य स्वगृहे स्थितिमाययौस्वप्नात्स्वप्नान्तरं प्राप्य यथा तल्पगतः पुमान् ॥ ८ ॥

brahmāṇḍātparinirgatya svagṛhe sthitimāyayausvapnātsvapnāntaraṃ prāpya yathā talpagataḥ pumān || 8 ||

Coming all the way out of that universe, she came back to standing in her own house, like a man lying in bed who passes from one dream into another dream.

उस ब्रह्माण्ड से पूरी तरह बाहर निकलकर वह फिर अपने घर में खड़ी हो गई, जैसे बिस्तर पर लेटा हुआ आदमी एक सपने से दूसरे सपने में चला जाता है।

प्रतिभामात्रमेवैतत्सर्वमाकाशमात्रकम्न ब्रह्माण्डं न संसारो न कुड्यादि न दूरता ॥ ९ ॥

pratibhāmātramevaitatsarvamākāśamātrakamna brahmāṇḍaṃ na saṃsāro na kuḍyādi na dūratā || 9 ||

All this is only a mere appearance, only space itself. There is no cosmic egg, no world, no wall or anything like it, and no distance.

यह सब केवल एक प्रतीति मात्र है, केवल आकाश मात्र है। न कोई ब्रह्माण्ड है, न संसार है, न कोई दीवार वगैरह है, न कोई दूरी है।

स्वचित्तमेव कचति तयोस्तादृङ्मनोहरम्वासनामात्रसोल्लेखं क्व ब्रह्माण्डं क्व संसृतिः ॥ १० ॥

svacittameva kacati tayostādṛṅmanoharamvāsanāmātrasollekhaṃ kva brahmāṇḍaṃ kva saṃsṛtiḥ || 10 ||

It is only their own mind shining as this charming scene, sketched out of nothing but mental impressions — where, then, is the cosmic egg, where is the round of birth and death?

यह उन दोनों का अपना ही मन है जो इतने मनोहर दृश्य के रूप में चमक रहा है, जो केवल पुराने संस्कारों से बना है — तो कहाँ है ब्रह्माण्ड, कहाँ है संसार-चक्र?

निरावरणमेवेदं ज्ञप्त्याकाशमनन्तकम् । किंचित्स्वचित्तेनोन्नीतं स्पन्दयुक्त्येव मारुतः ॥ ११ ॥

nirāvaraṇamevedaṃ jñaptyākāśamanantakam | kiṃcitsvacittenonnītaṃ spandayuktyeva mārutaḥ || 11 ||

This is nothing but the unveiled, endless space of pure awareness. Something is lifted up out of it by one's own mind, the way wind appears only through its own movement.

यह और कुछ नहीं, केवल चेतना का अनावृत, अनंत आकाश है। इसी में से अपने मन द्वारा कुछ उभार दिया जाता है, जैसे हवा अपनी हलचल से ही प्रकट होती है।

चिदाकाशमजं शान्तं सर्वत्रैव हि सर्वदा । चित्त्वाज्जगदिवाभाति स्वयमेवात्मनात्मनि ॥ १२ ॥

cidākāśamajaṃ śāntaṃ sarvatraiva hi sarvadā | cittvājjagadivābhāti svayamevātmanātmani || 12 ||

The space of pure consciousness is unborn and at peace, everywhere and always. Because it is consciousness, it shines by itself, within itself, as if it were a world.

चेतना का आकाश अजन्मा और शांत है, हर जगह और हमेशा। चेतन होने के कारण वह अपने आप में, अपने द्वारा ही, मानो एक जगत बनकर चमक उठता है।

येन बुद्धं तु तस्यैतदाकाशादप शून्यकम् । न बुद्धं येन तस्यैतद्वज्रसाराचलोपमम् ॥ १३ ॥

yena buddhaṃ tu tasyaitadākāśādap śūnyakam | na buddhaṃ yena tasyaitadvajrasārācalopamam || 13 ||

For the one who understands this rightly, this world is emptier than empty space itself. For the one who does not understand it, this same world seems as solid as a mountain of diamond.

जिसने इसे सही तरह समझ लिया है, उसके लिए यह जगत आकाश से भी अधिक खाली है। जिसने इसे नहीं समझा, उसके लिए यही जगत हीरे जैसे ठोस पहाड़ के समान है।

गृह एव यथा स्वप्ने नगरं भाति भासुरम् । तथैतदसदेवान्तश्चिद्धातौ भाति भास्वरम् ॥ १४ ॥

gṛha eva yathā svapne nagaraṃ bhāti bhāsuram | tathaitadasadevāntaściddhātau bhāti bhāsvaraṃ || 14 ||

Just as in a dream a mere house can appear as a shining city, so too this world, though unreal, shines brightly within the very substance of consciousness.

जैसे सपने में एक साधारण घर भी चमकते हुए नगर जैसा दिखने लगता है, वैसे ही यह जगत, असत् होते हुए भी, चेतना के भीतर ही चमकीला दिखाई देता है।

यथा मरौ जलं बुद्धं कटकत्वं च हेमनि । असत्सदिव भातीदं तथा दृश्यत्वमात्मनि ॥ १५ ॥

yathā marau jalaṃ buddhaṃ kaṭakatvaṃ ca hemani | asatsadiva bhātīdaṃ tathā dṛśyatvamātmani || 15 ||

Just as water is seen where there is only a desert, and a bangle is seen in a lump of gold, an unreal thing appears as if it were real — in the same way, this visible world appears within the Self.

जैसे रेगिस्तान में पानी दिखाई देता है और सोने में कंगन का रूप दिखाई देता है, असत् चीज़ भी सत् जैसी दिखने लगती है — उसी तरह यह दिखने वाला जगत आत्मा में ही दिखाई देता है।

एवमाकथयन्त्यौ ते ललने ललिताकृती । गृहान्निर्ययतुर्बाह्यं चारुचक्रमणक्रमैः ॥ १६ ॥

evamākathayantyau te lalane lalitākṛtī | gṛhānniryayaturbāhyam cārucakramaṇakramaiḥ || 16 ||

Talking like this, the two graceful women, lovely in form, walked out of the house, moving outside with charming, easy steps.

इस तरह बातें करती हुई वे दोनों सुंदर स्त्रियाँ, जिनका रूप मनोहर था, घर से बाहर निकलीं, अपने सुंदर, इत्मीनान भरे कदमों से चलती हुईं।

आदृश्ये ग्रामलोकेन प्रेक्षमाणे पुरोगिरिम् । चुम्बिताकाशकुहरं संस्पृष्टादित्यमण्डलम् ॥ १७ ॥

ādṛśye grāmalokena prekṣamāṇe purogirim | cumbitākāśakuharaṃ saṃspṛṣṭādityamaṇḍalam || 17 ||

Now visible to the people of the village, the two women gazed at the mountain ahead of them, a mountain so tall it kissed the hollow of the sky and touched the very disc of the sun.

अब गाँव वालों को दिखाई देते हुए, दोनों स्त्रियाँ आगे खड़े उस पहाड़ को देख रही थीं, जो इतना ऊँचा था कि आकाश के खोखले हिस्से को चूमता था और सूरज के गोले को छूता था।

नानावर्णाखिलोत्फुल्लविचित्रवननिर्मलम् । नानानिर्झरनिर्ह्रादकूजद्वनविहंगमम् ॥ १८ ॥

nānāvarṇākhilotphullavicitravana nirmalam | nānānirjharanirhrādakūjadvanavihaṅgamam || 18 ||

The mountain was pure with its whole forest in bloom, colourful and varied, and its forest birds sang amid the roar of many waterfalls.

वह पहाड़ अपने रंग-बिरंगे, पूरी तरह खिले हुए विविध जंगल से स्वच्छ था, और उसके जंगली पक्षी कई झरनों की गड़गड़ाहट के बीच चहचहा रहे थे।

विचित्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जपिञ्जराम्बुदमण्डलम् । स्वभ्रमच्छगुलुच्छाग्रविश्रान्तखगसारसम् ॥ १९ ॥

vicitramañjarīpuñjapiñjarāmbudamaṇḍalam | svabhramacchagulucchāgraviśrāntakhagasārasam || 19 ||

Its clouds were tinged tawny by clusters of strange, colourful blossoms, and cranes and other birds rested on the tips of clusters near its drifting peaks.

वहाँ के बादलों के झुंड विचित्र, रंगीन फूलों के गुच्छों से पीलापन लिए हुए थे, और सारस व अन्य पक्षी उसकी घूमती चोटियों के पास के गुच्छों की नोक पर विश्राम कर रहे थे।

सारवञ्जुलविस्तारगुप्ताखिलसरित्तटम् । असमाप्तशिलाश्वभ्रलतावर्तनमारुतम् ॥ २० ॥

sāravañjulavistāraguptākhilasarittaṭam | asamāptaśilāśvabhralatāvartanamārutam || 20 ||

All its riverbanks were hidden under thick, spreading vanjula trees, and the wind swirled endlessly around its rocks, hollows, and creepers.

उसके सभी नदी-किनारे घने, फैले हुए वंजुल वृक्षों से ढके थे, और हवा उसकी चट्टानों, गुफाओं और बेलों के बीच लगातार घूमती रहती थी।

पुष्पाग्रपिहिताकाशकोशकुड्यकवारिदम्। पतद्दीर्घसरित्स्रोतः स्फुरन्मुक्ताकलापकम् ॥ २१ ॥

puṣpāgropihitākāśakośakuḍyakavāridam| pataddīrghasaritsrotaḥ sphuranmuktākalāpakam || 21 ||

Flower-tips covered its rock walls like clouds hiding the empty space between them, and its long streams of falling water looked like flashing strings of pearls.

फूलों की नोकों ने उसकी चट्टानी दीवारों के बीच के खाली स्थान को बादलों की तरह ढक रखा था, और उसकी लंबी गिरती जलधाराएँ चमकते मोतियों की मालाओं जैसी लगती थीं।

चलद्वृक्षवनव्यूहवातवेल्लिसरित्तटम्। नानावनाकुलोपान्तच्छायासततशीतलम् ॥ २२ ॥

caladvṛkṣavanavyūhavātavellisarittataṃ| nānāvanākulopāntachchāyāsatataśītalam || 22 ||

Its riverbanks had rows of trees swaying in the wind, and the shade at the edge of its many crowded forests kept it always cool.

उसके नदी-किनारों पर पेड़ों की कतारें हवा में झूम रही थीं, और उसके घने जंगलों के किनारों की छाया उसे हमेशा ठंडा रखती थी।

अथ ते ललने तत्र तदा ददृशतुः स्वयम्। तं गिरिग्रामकं व्योम्नः स्वर्गखण्डमिव च्युतम् ॥ २३ ॥

atha te lalane tatra tadā dadṛśatuḥ svayam| taṃ girigrāmakaṃ vyomnaḥ svargakhaṇḍamiva cyutam || 23 ||

Then, at that time and place, the two women themselves saw that mountain village, as if it were a piece of heaven that had fallen from the sky.

फिर उस समय और उस जगह, दोनों स्त्रियों ने स्वयं उस पहाड़ी गाँव को देखा, मानो वह आकाश से गिरा हुआ स्वर्ग का एक टुकड़ा हो।

रटत्प्रणालीपटलं पूर्णपुष्करिणीगणम्। द्विजैः कुचकुचैः कूजत्स्वलीलाश्वभ्रकच्छकम् ॥ २४ ॥

raṭatpraṇālīpaṭalaṃ pūrṇapuṣkariṇīgaṇam| dvijaiḥ kucakucaiḥ kūjatsvalīlāśvabhrakacchakam || 24 ||

It had rows of water-channels murmuring and clusters of full lotus-ponds, and its little playful pools were cooing with the kuch-kuch calls of birds.

वहाँ पानी की नालियों की कतारें बड़बड़ाती थीं और भरे हुए कमल-तालाबों के झुंड थे, और उसके छोटे-छोटे खेलते तालाबों में पक्षी 'कुच-कुच' की बोली बोल रहे थे।

गच्छद्गोवृन्दहुंकारकरालाखिलकुञ्जकम्। कुञ्जगुल्मकखण्डाढ्यं सच्छायघनशाद्वलम् ॥ २५ ॥

gacchadgovṛndahuṃkārakarālākhilakuñjakam| kuñjagulmakakhaṇḍāḍhyaṃ sacchāyaghanashādvalam || 25 ||

All its groves echoed with the moaning of cattle-herds walking by. It was rich with clusters of bushes and thickets, and its meadows were thick and cool with shade.

उसके सारे बाग़-बगीचे वहाँ से गुज़रते गाय-बैलों के झुंड की रँभाहट से गूंज रहे थे। वहाँ झाड़ियों और झुरमुटों के गुच्छे बहुत थे, और घास के मैदान घनी छाया से ठंडे थे।

दुष्प्रवेशार्ककिरणं दृशन्नीहारधूसरम् । उदग्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जजटालं विशिखान्तरम् ॥ २६ ॥

duṣpraveśārkakiraṇaṃ dṛśannīhāradhūsaram | udagramañjarīpuñjajaṭālaṃ viśikhāntaram || 26 ||

The sun's rays could barely enter there; it looked grey with mist. The lanes between the houses were thick and tangled with clusters of tall flower-sprays.

वहाँ सूरज की किरणें मुश्किल से पहुँच पाती थीं; कोहरे की वजह से सब कुछ धुंधला-सा भूरा दिखता था। घरों के बीच की गलियाँ ऊँचे फूलों के गुच्छों से घनी और उलझी हुई थीं।

शिलाकुहरवाःस्फालप्रोच्चलन्मुक्तनिर्झरैः । स्मारिताचलनिर्धूत्क्षीरोदकजलश्रियम् ॥ २७ ॥

śilākuharavāḥsphālaprocchalanmuktanirjharaiḥ | smāritācalanirdhūtkṣīroda kajalaśriyam || 27 ||

With waterfalls leaping up and splashing from the hollows of the rocks, it brought to mind the beauty of the Ocean of Milk when it was churned by the mountain.

चट्टानों की खोहों से झरने उछल-उछल कर बह रहे थे, और यह देखकर उस क्षीरसागर की सुंदरता याद आती थी जब उसे पर्वत से मथा गया था।

फलमाल्यमहाभारभासुरैरजिरद्रुमैः । आनीय पुष्पसंभारं तिष्ठद्भिरिव संकुलम् ॥ २८ ॥

phalamālyamahābhārabhāsurairajiradrumaiḥ | ānīya puṣpasambhāraṃ tiṣṭhadbhiriva saṅkulam || 28 ||

The trees in the courtyards shone, loaded heavily with fruit and flower garlands, crowded together as if they stood there having brought a heap of flowers as a gift.

आँगन के पेड़ फलों और फूलों की मालाओं के भारी बोझ से चमक रहे थे, और ऐसे भीड़ में खड़े थे मानो फूलों का ढेर भेंट लेकर आए हों।

तरत्तरङ्गझांकारकारिमारुतकम्पितैः । कीर्णपुष्पसमावृष्टं द्रुमैरपि रसाकुलैः ॥ २९ ॥

tarattaraṅgajhāṅkārakārimārutakampitaiḥ | kīrṇapuṣpasamāvṛṣṭaṃ drumairapi rasākulaiḥ || 29 ||

The place was showered all over with scattered flowers from trees full of sap, trees shaken by a wind that made a tinkling sound as it crossed the rippling waves.

वह जगह चारों ओर बिखरे फूलों से ढकी थी, जो रस से भरे पेड़ों से गिरते थे; ये पेड़ उस हवा से हिलते थे जो लहरों को पार करते हुए हल्की झनकार पैदा करती थी।

अशङ्कितशिलाकूटस्रवदब्बिन्दुटंकृतैः । किंचित्कृतरवं गुप्तैरशङ्कैः शङ्कितैः खगैः ॥ ३० ॥

aśaṅkitaśilākūṭasravadabbinduṭaṅkṛtaiḥ | kiñcitkṛtaravaṃ guptairaśaṅkaiḥ śaṅkitaiḥ khagaiḥ || 30 ||

Drops of water fell unnoticed from the rocky peaks, tapping softly, and birds made a little sound too - some hidden and unafraid, others timid and on guard.

चट्टानों की चोटियों से पानी की बूँदें बिना किसी की नज़र में आए धीरे-धीरे टपक रही थीं। पक्षी भी थोड़ी-बहुत आवाज़ कर रहे थे - कुछ छिपे हुए और निडर, और कुछ डरे हुए और सतर्क।

उत्फाललहरीश्रान्तसीकरास्वादनाकुलैः । नद्यामुडुपरावर्तवृत्तिभिर्विहगैर्वृतम् ॥ ३१ ॥

utphālalaharīśrāntasīkarāsvādanākulaiḥ | nadyāmuḍuparāvartavṛttibhirvihagairvṛtam || 31 ||

The place was surrounded by birds on the river, circling round and round like little boats, eager to taste the cool spray flung up by the tired, leaping waves.

वह जगह नदी पर मौजूद पक्षियों से घिरी थी, जो छोटी नावों की तरह गोल-गोल घूम रहे थे और थकी हुई उछलती लहरों से उड़ती फुहार चखने को बेताब थे।

उत्तालतालविश्रान्तकाकालोकनशङ्कितैः । बालैः प्रगोपितामिक्षाखण्डं जीर्णस्वभुक्तकैः ॥ ३२ ॥

uttālatālaviśrāntakākālokanaśaṅkitaiḥ | bālaiḥ pragopitāmikṣākhaṇḍaṃ jīrṇasvabhuktakaiḥ || 32 ||

There were children who, wary and watchful of the crows resting on the tall palm trees, had hidden away pieces of curd-cheese after already eating their own share.

वहाँ कुछ बच्चे थे जो ऊँचे ताड़ के पेड़ों पर बैठे कौवों से सतर्क और चौकन्ने थे; उन्होंने अपना हिस्सा खा लेने के बाद बचे हुए दही-पनीर के टुकड़े छिपा रखे थे।

पुष्पशेखरसंभारवसनग्रामबालकम् । खर्जूरनिम्बजम्बीरगहनोपान्तशीतलम् ॥ ३३ ॥

puṣpaśekharasaṃbhāravasanagrāmabālakam | kharjūranimba jambīragahanopāntaśītalam || 33 ||

The village children wore heaps of flowers as crowns, and the place was cool near the edges of thick groves of date-palms, neem, and citron trees.

गाँव के बच्चों ने फूलों के ढेर से बने मुकुट पहन रखे थे, और खजूर, नीम और नींबू के घने पेड़ों के किनारे की जगह ठंडी थी।

क्षौमाग्रहस्ताम्बरया मञ्जरीपूर्णकर्णया । क्षुत्क्षीणयाक्रान्तरथ्यं ग्रामकीटककान्तया ॥ ३४ ॥

kṣaumāgrahastāmbarayā mañjarīpūrṇakarṇayā | kṣutkṣīṇayākrāntarathyaṃ grāmakīṭakakāntayā || 34 ||

The village street was crossed by a girl holding the hem of her linen dress in her hand, her ears full of flower-sprays, weak with hunger - the village boy's sweetheart.

गाँव की गली से एक लड़की गुज़र रही थी जो अपने मलमल के कपड़े का किनारा हाथ में पकड़े थी, उसके कानों में फूलों के गुच्छे भरे थे, वह भूख से कमज़ोर थी - और गाँव के लड़के की प्रिय थी।

सरित्तरङ्गसंघट्टसंरावाश्रुतसंकथम् । कर्मजाड्यघनत्रासवाञ्छितैकान्तसंस्थितम् ॥ ३५ ॥

sarittaraṅgasamghaṭṭasaṃrāvāśrutasaṅkatham | karmajāḍyaghanatrāsavāñchitaikāntasaṃsthitam || 35 ||

There, conversation was drowned out by the crash of river waves colliding with each other. People sought out this quiet, solitary place to escape the heavy fear that comes from dull, wearisome work.

वहाँ नदी की लहरों के आपस में टकराने की गड़गड़ाहट में बातचीत दब जाती थी। थकाऊ और उबाऊ काम से पैदा हुए भारी डर से बचने के लिए लोग इस शांत, एकांत जगह को ढूँढ़ते थे।

दधिलिप्तास्यहस्तांसैः स्निग्धपुष्पलताधरैः । नग्नैर्गोमयपङ्काङ्कैर्बालैराकुलचत्वरम् ॥ ३६ ॥

dadhiliptāsyahastāṃsaiḥ snigdhapuṣpalatādharaiḥ | nagnairgomayapaṅkāṅkairbālairākulacatvaram || 36 ||

The village square was crowded with naked children, their faces, hands, and shoulders smeared with curd, wearing soft flower-vines, and marked with patches of cow-dung mud.

गाँव का चौक नंगे बच्चों से भरा था, जिनके चेहरे, हाथ और कंधे दही से सने थे, जो कोमल फूलों की बेलें पहने थे, और जिन पर गोबर के कीचड़ के निशान लगे थे।

तीरशाद्वलवल्लीनां दोलान्दोलनकारिभिः । तरङ्गैर्वाह्यमानस्य लेखिकाङ्कितसैकतम् ॥ ३७ ॥

tīraśādvalavallīnāṃ dolāndolakāribhiḥ | taraṅgairvāhyamānasya lekhikāṅkitasaikatam || 37 ||

Waves rocked the creepers on the grassy bank back and forth like a swing, and as they moved along, they left the sandbank marked with streaks like lines of writing.

लहरें किनारे की घास पर उगी बेलों को झूले की तरह आगे-पीछे झुला रही थीं, और बहते-बहते उन्होंने रेत के किनारे पर लिखावट की लकीरों जैसे निशान छोड़ दिए थे।

दधिक्षीरघनामोदमत्तमन्थरमक्षिकम् । कामभुक्तार्थतोद्वाष्पजर्जराबलबालकम् ॥ ३८ ॥

dadhikṣīraghanāmodamattamantharamakṣikam | kāmabhuktārthatodvāṣpajarjarābalabālakam || 38 ||

The flies were sluggish and drowsy, drunk on the thick smell of curd and milk, and a weak child stood there, worn out and in tears because he could not get the food he wanted.

मक्खियाँ दही और दूध की गहरी खुशबू से मानो नशे में सुस्त पड़ी थीं, और एक कमज़ोर बच्चा वहाँ खड़ा था, थका हुआ और रोता हुआ, क्योंकि उसे मनचाहा खाना नहीं मिला था।

गोमयासिक्तवलयकरनारीकृतक्रुधम् । धम्मिल्लवलनाव्यग्रत्रस्तस्त्रीविहसज्जनम् ॥ ३९ ॥

gomayāsiktavalayakaranārīkṛtakrudham | dhammillavalanāvyagratrastastrīvihasajjanam || 39 ||

There a woman grew angry when her bangled hand was splashed with cow-dung water, while people laughed at another woman, flustered and startled, busy retying her hair.

वहाँ एक स्त्री को गुस्सा आ गया जब उसके चूड़ियों वाले हाथ पर गोबर का पानी छिड़क गया, जबकि लोग एक और स्त्री पर हँस रहे थे जो घबराई और चौंकी हुई अपने बाल फिर से बाँधने में व्यस्त थी।

दान्तपुष्पच्छदोत्सन्नपतत्ककुदवायसम् । गृहरथ्यागणद्वारकीर्णक्रूरकुरण्टकम् ॥ ४० ॥

dāntapuṣpacchadotsannapatatkakudavāyasam | gṛharathyāgaṇadvārakīrṇakrūrakuraṇṭakam || 40 ||

Crows settled on heaps of fallen white petals, and the doorways along the rows of houses were scattered with the sharp, thorny kuranta flowers.

कौवे गिरी हुई सफ़ेद पंखुड़ियों के ढेर पर बैठे थे, और घरों की कतारों के दरवाज़ों पर काँटेदार कुरंट के फूल बिखरे थे।

गृहपार्श्वस्थितश्वभ्रकुञ्जैः कुसुमितप्रभैः । प्रत्यहं प्रातरागुल्फमाकीर्णकुसुमाजिरम् ॥ ४१ ॥

gṛhapārśvasthitaśvabhrakuñjaiḥ kusumitaprabhaiḥ | pratyahaṃ prātarāgulphamākīrṇakusumājiram || 41 ||

Beside the houses stood flowering groves in the hollows, bright with blossoms, and every morning the courtyard was scattered with fallen flowers up to the ankle.

घरों के पास गड्ढों में फूलों से लदे बाग़ खड़े थे, जो खिले हुए फूलों से चमकते थे, और हर सुबह आँगन में टखनों तक फूल बिखरे रहते थे।

चरच्चमरसारङ्गजालजङ्गलखण्डकम् । गुञ्जानिकुञ्जसंजातशष्पसुप्तमृगार्भकम् ॥ ४२ ॥

caraccamarasāraṅgajālajaṅgalakhaṇḍakam | guñjānikuñjasañjātaśaṣpasuptamṛgārbhakam || 42 ||

There was a stretch of wild land where herds of yaks and deer wandered about, and fawns lay asleep on the grass that grew in the murmuring thickets.

वहाँ जंगल का एक टुकड़ा था जहाँ याक और हिरणों के झुंड घूमते-फिरते थे, और हिरन के बच्चे उस घास पर सोए रहते थे जो गुनगुनाते झुरमुटों में उगी थी।

एकान्तसुप्तवत्सैककर्णस्पन्दास्तमक्षिकम् । गोपोच्छिष्टीकृतदधिखसृक्किस्पन्दिमक्षिकम् ॥ ४३ ॥

ekāntasuptavatsaikakarṇaspandāstamakṣikam | gopocchiṣṭīkṛtadadhikhasṛkkispandimakṣikam || 43 ||

Flies were driven off with just a single twitch of the ear of a calf sleeping alone, and flies also hovered, quivering, at the mouth over curd left over from the cowherd's meal.

अकेले सोए बछड़े के कान की एक ही फड़कन से मक्खियाँ उड़ जाती थीं, और ग्वाले के खाने से बचे दही पर मुँह के कोने में मक्खियाँ फड़फड़ाती रहती थीं।

समस्तसद्मसंक्षीणमक्षिकाक्षिप्तमाक्षिकम् । फुल्लाशोकद्रुमोद्यानकृतलाक्षिकमन्दिरम् ॥ ४४ ॥

samastasadmasaṅkṣīṇamakṣikākṣiptamākṣikam | phullāśokadrumodyānakṛtalākṣikamandiram || 44 ||

Honey lay scattered about, spread by bees grown weary from visiting every house, and the houses looked red as lac from the gardens of blooming ashoka trees nearby.

हर घर में जाकर थकी हुई मधुमक्खियों ने शहद जगह-जगह बिखेर दिया था, और पास के खिले हुए अशोक के पेड़ों के बागों से घर लाख जैसे लाल दिखते थे।

सीकरासारमरुता नित्यार्द्रविकचद्रुमम् । कदम्बमुकुलप्रोतसमस्तच्छादनतृणम् ॥ ४५ ॥

sīkarāsāramarutā nityārdhavikacadrumam | kadambamukulaprotasamastacchādanatṛṇam || 45 ||

A breeze carrying showers of fine spray kept the trees always moist and in bloom, and every thatched roof was strung with kadamba buds.

बारीक फुहार लिए हवा पेड़ों को हमेशा नम और खिला हुआ रखती थी, और हर छप्पर की घास में कदंब की कलियाँ गुँथी हुई थीं।

प्रतिकृत्तलताफुल्लकेतकोत्करपाण्डुरम् । वहत्प्राणालपटलीरणद्गुरुगुरारवम् ॥ ४६ ॥

pratikṛttalatāphullaketakotkarapāṇḍuram | vahatprāṇālapaṭalīraṇadgurugurāravam || 46 ||

It looked pale white with heaps of blooming ketaki flowers on trimmed creepers, and rows of water-channels flowed with a deep gurgling sound.

काटी गई बेलों पर खिले केतकी के फूलों के ढेर से जगह सफ़ेद-सी दिखती थी, और पानी की नालियाँ गहरी गुड़गुड़ाहट की आवाज़ के साथ बह रही थीं।

वातायनगुहानिर्यत्सोधविश्रान्तवारिदम् । पूर्णपुष्करिणीपङ्क्तिपूर्णराजपृथूत्तरम् ॥ ४७ ॥

vātāyanaguhaniryatsodhaviśrāntavāridam | pūrṇapuṣkariṇīpaṅktipūrṇarājapṛthūttaram || 47 ||

Clouds rose from the windows and hollows of the hills and settled to rest on the terraces of the mansions; rows of brimming lotus-ponds filled the land, along with broad, grand royal buildings.

बादल पहाड़ों की खिड़कियों और गुफाओं से निकलकर महलों की छतों पर आराम करने लगते थे; भरे हुए कमल-तालाबों की कतारें और बड़े शानदार राजसी भवन उस जगह को भरे हुए थे।

नीरन्ध्रविटपिच्छायाशीतलामलशाद्वलम् । सर्वशष्पाग्रवार्बिन्दुप्रतिबिम्बिततारकम् ॥ ४८ ॥

nīrandhraviṭapicchāyāśītalāmalśādvalam | sarvaśaṣpāgravārbindupratibimbitatārakam || 48 ||

The meadows were cool and clean in the unbroken shade of the trees, and the stars were reflected in the drops of water on the tip of every blade of grass.

पेड़ों की घनी, अटूट छाया में घास के मैदान ठंडे और साफ़ थे, और हर तिनके की नोक पर पानी की बूँद में तारे झलकते थे।

अनारतपतत्फुल्लहिमवर्षसितालयम् । विचित्रमञ्जरीपुष्पपत्रसत्फलपादपम् ॥ ४९ ॥

anāratapatatphullahimavarṣasitālayam | vicitramañjarīpuṣpapatrasatphalapādapam || 49 ||

The dwelling was white with an endless falling shower of blossoming snow, and its trees were full of strange flower-clusters, leaves, and good fruit.

वह घर बिना रुके गिरती हुई खिली बर्फ की बौछार से सफ़ेद था, और उसके पेड़ों में तरह-तरह के फूलों के गुच्छे, पत्ते और अच्छे फल भरे हुए थे।

गृहकक्षान्तरालीनमेघसुप्तचिरण्टिकम् । सौधस्थमेघविद्युद्भिरनादेयप्रदीपकम् ॥ ५० ॥

gṛhakakṣāntarālīnameghasuptaciraṇṭikam | saudhasthameghavidyudbhiranādeyapradīpakam || 50 ||

Inside the rooms of the house, clouds had settled and lay there like sleeping fireflies, and the lightning from the clouds resting on the mansion made lamps unnecessary.

घर के कमरों के भीतर बादल जा बसे थे और सोए हुए जुगनुओं की तरह पड़े रहते थे, और महल पर टिके बादलों की बिजली की चमक से दीये जलाने की ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ती थी।

कन्दरानिलभांकारघनघुंघुममण्डपम् । चरच्चकोरहारीतहरिणीहारिमन्दिरम् ॥ ५१ ॥

kandarānilabhāṃkāraghanaghuṃghumamaṇḍapam | caraccakorahārītahariṇīhārimandiram || 51 ||

Its pavilions were filled with the deep droning sound of the wind blowing out of the mountain caves, and the mansion was made beautiful by cakora birds, green pigeons, and does moving about freely.

उसके मंडपों में पहाड़ी गुफाओं से आती हवा की गहरी गूँजती आवाज़ भरी रहती थी, और उस भवन की शोभा घूमते हुए चकोर पक्षियों, हरे कबूतरों और हिरणियों से बढ़ जाती थी।

उन्निद्रकन्दलोद्वान्तमांसलामोदमन्थरैः । मरुद्भिर्मन्दमायातुमारब्धैर्लोलपल्लवम् ॥ ५२ ॥

unnidrakandalodvāntamāṃsalāmodamantharaiḥ | marudbhirmandamāyātumārabdhairlolapallavam || 52 ||

Breezes grew slow and heavy with the rich scent breathed out by freshly opened buds; as these breezes began to blow softly, the young leaves trembled.

ताज़ी खिली कलियों से निकली गहरी सुगंध से हवाएँ भारी और धीमी हो गई थीं; जब ये हवाएँ धीरे-धीरे बहने लगीं, तो कोमल पत्तियाँ काँपने लगीं।

लावकालापलीलायामालीनललनागणम् । कोककोकिलकाकोलकोलाहलसमाकुलम् ॥ ५३ ॥

lāvakālāpalīlāyāmālīnalalanāgaṇam | kokakokilakākolakolāhalasamākulam || 53 ||

Groups of women stayed absorbed in watching the playful sport of quails and peacocks, while the place was full of the mixed cries of cakravaka birds, cuckoos, and crows.

स्त्रियों के समूह बटेरों और मोरों की चंचल क्रीड़ा देखने में मगन रहते थे, और वह स्थान चकवा पक्षियों, कोयलों और कौवों की मिली-जुली बोली से भरा रहता था।

शालतालतमालाब्जनीलतत्फलमालिनम् । वल्लीवलयविन्यासविलासवलितद्रुमम् ॥ ५४ ॥

śālatālatamālābjanīlatatphalamālinam | vallīvalayavinyāsavilāsavalitadrumnam || 54 ||

The sala, tala-palm, tamala, and abja trees were garlanded with their own dark fruit, and the trees were wound about gracefully with rings of creepers, like bangles.

शाल, ताल, तमाल और अब्ज वृक्ष अपने ही गहरे नीले फलों की माला पहने खड़े थे, और उन पेड़ों के चारों ओर लताएँ कंगन की तरह सुंदर ढंग से लिपटी हुई थीं।

आलोलपल्लवलतावलितायनानामुत्फुल्लकन्दलशिलीन्ध्रसुगन्धितानाम् । तालीतमालदलताण्डवमण्डपानामारामफुल्लकुसुमद्रुमशीतलानाम् ॥ ५५ ॥

ālolapallavalatāvalitāyanānāmutphullakandalasilīndhrasugandhitānām | tālītamāladalatāṇḍavamaṇḍapānāmārāmaphullakusumadrumashītalānām || 55 ||

Their pathways were wound about with trembling, tender-leaved creepers, fragrant with fresh buds and mushrooms; their pavilions were places where the leaves of palm and tamala trees danced wildly in the wind, and they were kept cool by garden trees full of blooming flowers.

उनके रास्ते काँपती हुई कोमल पत्तों वाली लताओं से घिरे थे, ताज़ी कलियों और कुकुरमुत्तों की सुगंध से महकते थे; उनके मंडप ऐसी जगहें थीं जहाँ ताल और तमाल के पत्ते हवा में जोर से नाचते थे, और वे बगीचे के खिले हुए फूलों वाले पेड़ों से ठंडे रहते थे।

साराववारिचलनाकुलगोकुलानामानीलसस्यकुसुमस्थलशोभितानाम्तीरद्रुमप्रकरगुप्तसरिद्रयाणां नीरन्ध्रपुष्पितलताग्रवितानकानाम् ॥ ५६ ॥

sārāvavāricalanākulagokulānāmānīlasasyakusumasthalaśobhitānāmtīradrumaprakaraguptasaridrayāṇāṃ nīrandhrapuṣpitalatāgravitānakānām || 56 ||

Their herds of cattle stirred at the sound of flowing water; the ground shone with dark green crops and flowers; the rushing streams were hidden by thick rows of trees along the banks; and their tops were covered over by dense, flowering creepers.

वहाँ की गायों के झुंड बहते पानी की आवाज़ सुनकर हलचल में आ जाते थे; ज़मीन गहरे हरे खेतों और फूलों से चमकती थी; तेज़ बहती नदियाँ किनारे के घने पेड़ों की कतारों में छिपी रहती थीं; और उनके ऊपर घनी फूलों वाली लताओं की छतरी बनी रहती थी।

उद्यानकुन्दमकरन्दसुगन्धितानां गन्धान्धषट्पदकुलान्तरिताम्बुजानाम्सौन्दर्यतर्जितपुरन्दरमन्दिराणां राजीवराजिरजसारुणिताम्बराणाम् ॥ ५७ ॥

udyānakundamakarandasugandhitānāṃ gandhāndhaṣaṭpadakulāntaritāmbujānāmsaundaryatarjitapurandaramandirāṇāṃ rājīvarājirajasāruṇitāmbarāṇām || 57 ||

They were fragrant with the honey of jasmine flowers in their gardens; their lotuses were hidden under swarms of bees blinded by the sweet smell; their beauty put even Indra's palace to shame; and their skies turned red with the pollen dust rising from rows of lotuses.

वे बगीचों की चमेली के फूलों के मधु की सुगंध से महकते थे; उनके कमल सुगंध से मतवाले भौंरों के झुंड के नीचे छिप जाते थे; उनकी सुंदरता के आगे इंद्र का महल भी फीका पड़ जाता था; और कमलों की पंक्तियों से उड़ती पराग-धूल से वहाँ का आकाश लाल हो जाता था।

रँहोवहद्गिरिनदीरवघर्घराणां कुन्दावदातजलदद्युतिभासुराणाम्सौधस्थितोल्लसितफुल्ललतालयानां लीलावलोलकलकण्ठविहङ्गमानाम् ॥ ५८ ॥

raṃhovahadgirinadīravaghargharāṇāṃ kundāvadātajaladadyutibhāsurāṇāmsaudhasthitollasitaphullalatālayānāṃ līlāvalolakalakaṇṭhavihaṅgamānām || 58 ||

They rang with the gurgling roar of swift mountain rivers; they shone with the brightness of clouds white as jasmine flowers; on their terraces the flowering creepers grew bright and lush; and sweet-voiced birds moved about there playfully.

वहाँ तेज़ बहती पहाड़ी नदियों की गड़गड़ाती आवाज़ गूँजती थी; वे चमेली जैसे सफ़ेद बादलों की चमक से दमकते थे; उनकी छतों पर खिली हुई लताएँ हरी-भरी चमकती थीं; और वहाँ मीठी आवाज़ वाले पक्षी अठखेलियाँ करते हुए घूमते थे।

उल्लासिकौसुमदलास्तरणस्थयूनामापादमावलितमाल्यविलासिनीनांसर्वत्र सुन्दरनवाङ्कुरदन्तुराणां शोभोल्लसद्वरलताकुलमार्गणानाम् ॥ ५९ ॥

ullāsikausumadalāstaraṇasthayūnāmāpādamāvalitamālyavilāsinīnāmsarvatra sundaranavāṅkuradanturāṇāṃ śobhollasadvaralatākulamārgaṇānām || 59 ||

There, young lovers rested on beds spread with bright flower petals; lovely women wore garlands hanging down to their feet; everywhere the ground was studded with beautiful fresh sprouts; and the pathways were crowded with fine, brightly shining creepers.

वहाँ युवा प्रेमी-युगल चमकीली फूलों की पंखुड़ियों से बिछे बिस्तरों पर विश्राम करते थे; सुंदर स्त्रियाँ पैरों तक लटकती मालाएँ पहने रहती थीं; हर जगह ज़मीन सुंदर नई कोंपलों से भरी रहती थी; और रास्ते सुंदर, चमकती हुई लताओं से भरे रहते थे।

संजातकोमललतोत्पलसंकुलानांतिष्ठत्पयोदपटसंवलितालयानाम्नीहारहारहरितस्थलविश्रुतानां सौधस्थमेघतडिदाकुलिताङ्गनानाम् ॥ ६० ॥

saṃjātakomalalatotpalasaṃkulānāṃtiṣṭhatpayodapaṭasaṃvalitālayānāmnīhārahāraharitasthalaviśrutānāṃ saudhasthameghataḍidākulitāṅganānām || 60 ||

They were crowded with newly sprung, tender creepers and lotuses; their dwellings were wrapped as if in a cloth of resting clouds; they were known for ground as green as a garland of dew; and their courtyards flickered with the lightning of clouds resting on the mansions.

वहाँ नई उगी कोमल लताएँ और कमल भरे रहते थे; उनके घर मानो टिके हुए बादलों की चादर में लिपटे रहते थे; वे ओस की माला जैसी हरी ज़मीन के लिए जाने जाते थे; और उनके आँगन महल पर टिके बादलों की बिजली से जगमगाते रहते थे।

नीलोत्पलोल्लसितसौरभसुन्दराणां हुंकारहारिहीरतोन्मुखगोकुलानाम् । विश्रब्धमुग्धमृगसारगृहाजिराणामुन्नृत्यबर्हिघनसीकरनिर्झराणाम् ॥ ६१ ॥

nīlotpalollasitasaurabhasundarāṇāṃ huṃkārahārihīratonmukhagokulānām | viśrabdhamugdhamṛgasāragṛhājirāṇāmunnṛtyabarhighanasīkaranirjharāṇām || 61 ||

They were beautiful with the sweet fragrance rising from blue lotuses; their herds of cattle turned eagerly toward the charming sound of lowing; trusting, innocent deer wandered freely in their courtyards; and their waterfalls threw up such thick spray that peacocks danced in it.

वे नीले कमलों से उठती मीठी सुगंध से सुंदर लगते थे; वहाँ की गायों के झुंड मधुर रँभाने की आवाज़ की ओर उत्सुकता से मुड़ जाते थे; निडर, भोले हिरण उनके आँगनों में स्वतंत्र घूमते थे; और वहाँ के झरनों की इतनी घनी फुहार उठती थी कि उसमें मोर नाचने लगते थे।

सौगन्ध्यमत्तपवनाहतविक्लवानां वप्रौषधिज्वलनविस्मृतदीपकानाम् । कोलाहलाकुलकुलायकुलाकुलानां कुल्याकुलाकलकलाश्रुतसंकथानाम् ॥ ६२ ॥

saugandhyamattapavanāhataviklavānāṃ vaprauṣadhijvalanavismṛtadīpakānām | kolāhalākulakulāyakulākulānāṃ kulyākulākalakalāśrutasaṃkathānām || 62 ||

They were stirred by breezes made wild with fragrance striking against them; on their embankments, glowing herbs made lamps unnecessary and forgotten; the nests and their flocks of birds were thrown into noisy confusion; and the babbling sound of the streams was heard like an unending conversation.

सुगंध से मतवाली हवाओं के थपेड़ों से वहाँ हलचल मची रहती थी; वहाँ की मेड़ों पर चमकती जड़ी-बूटियों की रोशनी से दीये जलाना भूल जाते थे; पक्षियों के घोंसले और झुंड शोर-शराबे में डूबे रहते थे; और नहरों की कलकल आवाज़ ऐसे सुनाई देती थी मानो कोई बातचीत चल रही हो।

मुक्ताफलप्रकरसुन्दरबिन्दुपातशीताखिलद्रुमलतातृणपल्लवानाम् । लक्ष्मीमनस्तमितपुष्पविकासभाजां शक्नोति कः कलयितुं गिरिमन्दिराणाम् ॥ ६३ ॥

muktāphalaprakarasundarabindupātaśītākhiladrumalatātṛṇapallavānām | lakṣmīmanastamitapuṣpavikāsabhājāṃ śaknoti kaḥ kalayituṃ girimandirāṇām || 63 ||

In them, all the trees, creepers, grass, and young leaves were cooled by the fall of beautiful dewdrops like scattered pearls, and their blooming flowers were so lovely they dimmed the very mind of the goddess Lakshmi. Who indeed can fully describe such mountain dwellings?

वहाँ सारे पेड़, लताएँ, घास और नई पत्तियाँ बिखरे मोतियों जैसी सुंदर ओस की बूँदों से ठंडी रहती थीं, और वहाँ खिले फूल इतने सुंदर थे कि लक्ष्मी का मन भी उनके आगे फीका पड़ जाता। ऐसे पर्वत-निवासों का पूरा वर्णन भला कौन कर सकता है?
