13.27.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tasmin giritaṭe grāme tasya maṇḍapakoṭare | antardhimāśvāyayatus tatras the eva te striyau || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: In that village on the mountain slope, inside the hollow of his pavilion, staying right there, the two women came out of hiding and appeared again.

asmākaṃ vanadevībhyāṃ prasādaḥ kṛta ityatha | śāntaduḥkhe gṛhajane svavyāpārapare sthite || 2 ||

Then they said, 'This is a favor done by us two, the forest goddesses,' while the people of the house, their sorrow now calmed, were busy with their own work.

maṇḍapākāśasaṃlīnāṃ līlāmāha sarasvatī | vyomarūpā vyomarūpāṃ smayāttūṣṇīmiva sthitām || 3 ||

Sarasvati, herself in the form of space, spoke to Lila, who was also merged into the space inside the pavilion and was also in the form of space, standing silent as though smiling in wonder.

saṃkalpasvapnayoryeṣāṃ yatra saṃkathanaṃ mithaḥ | yathehārthakriyāṃ dhatte tayoḥ sā saṃkathā tathā || 4 ||

Whatever mutual talk happens between two things that exist only in imagination and in a dream, it brings about a real effect there, just as this conversation of ours does here.

pṛthvyādināḍīprāṇādirte'pyabhyuditā tayoḥ | sā saṃkathanasamvittiḥ svapnasamkalpayoriva || 5 ||

Even without earth and the rest, without the body's channels or breath, that awareness of talking to each other arises between the two, just as it arises between a dream and an imagined thing.

śrīsarasvatyuvāca | jñeyaṃ jñātamaśeṣeṇa dṛṣṭādṛṣṭārthasaṃvidaḥ | īdṛśīyaṃ brahmasattā kimanyadvada pṛcchasi || 6 ||

Sri Sarasvati said: Everything that is to be known has been known completely, through the awareness of things seen and unseen. Such is this reality that is Brahman. What else are you asking? Tell me.

līlovāca | mṛtasya bharturjovo'sau yatra rājyaṃ karoti me | tatrāhaṃ kiṃ na taddṛṣṭā dṛṣṭāsmīha sutena kim || 7 ||

Lila said: That soul of my dead husband, who is now ruling a kingdom for me — have I not seen that with my own eyes? And am I seen here only through my son, or what?

śrīsarasvatyuvāca | abhyāsena vinā vatse tadā te dvaitaniścayaḥ | nūnamastaṃgato nābhūnniḥśeṣaṃ varavarṇini || 8 ||

Sri Sarasvati said: Child, without practice, your conviction that the two were separate had surely not completely gone away yet, O beautiful one.

advaitaṃ yo na yāto'sau kathamadvaitakarmabhiḥ | yujyate tāpasaṃsthasya cchāyāṅgānubhavaḥ kutaḥ || 9 ||

One who has not reached oneness, how can he be joined to it through actions meant for oneness? For someone still caught up in suffering, how can there be any experience of a shadow-body at all?

līlāsmīti vinābhyāsaṃ tava nāstagato'bhavatyadā bhāvastadā satyasaṃkalpatvamabhūnna te || 10 ||

As long as your sense 'I am Lila' had not faded away, even without practice, the power to make your wishes come true had not yet come to you.

adyāsi satyasaṃkalpā saṃpannā tena māṃ sutaḥ | sapśyatvityabhimataṃ phalitaṃ tava sundari || 11 ||

Today you have become one whose wish comes true. Because of that, your wish — 'let my son see me' — has now come true, O lovely one.

idānīṃ tasya bhartustvaṃ samīpaṃ yadi gacchasi | tatteena vyavahāraste pūrvavatsaṃpravartate || 12 ||

Now, if you go near that husband of yours, then your dealings with him will go on just as before.

līlovāca | ihaiva mandirākāśe patirvipro mamābhavat | ihaiva sa mṛto bhūtvā saṃpanno vasudhādhipaḥ || 13 ||

Lila said: Right here, in the space of this house, my husband was a brahmin. Right here, after dying, he became a king, the lord of the earth.

ihaiva tasya saṃsāre tasminbhūmaṇḍalāntare | rājadhānīpure tasminpurandhryasmi vyavasthitā || 14 ||

Right here, in his new life in that world, in that other region of the earth, in that capital city, I am established there as his wife.

ihaivāntaḥpure tasmin sa mṛto mama bhūpatiḥ | ihaivāntaḥpurākāśe tasmineva pure nṛpaḥ || 15 ||

Right here, in that inner palace, that king of mine died. Right here, in the space of that same inner palace, in that same city, he became king again.

saṃpanno vasudhāpīṭhe nānājanapadeśvaraḥ | sarvārjavajavībhāva ihaivaiavaṃ vyavasthitaḥ || 16 ||

He became the ruler of many lands on the seat of the earth, of a nature completely straightforward, and he remains established right here, in this same way.

asminneva gṛhākāśe sarvā brahmāṇḍabhūmayaḥ | sthitāḥ samudgake manye yathāntaḥ sarṣapotkarāḥ || 17 ||

I think that in this very space of the house, all the worlds of the universe exist, like a heap of mustard seeds inside a small box.

sadā'dūramahaṃ manye tadbhartrurmama maṇḍalam | kvacitpārśve sthitamih yathā paśyāmi tatkuru || 18 ||

I always think that this kingdom of my husband is not far away. Somehow make it so that I see it as though it were right beside me, here.

śrīdevyuvāca | bhūtalārundhatisute bhartārastava saṃprati | trayo nāmāthavābhūvanbahavaḥ śatasaṃmatāḥ || 19 ||

Sri Devi said: O chaste daughter of the earth, how many husbands have you had until now — were there three by name, or were there many, counted in hundreds?

nedīyasāṃ trayāṇāṃ tu dvijaste bhasmatāṃ gataḥ | rājā mālyāntaragataḥ saṃsthito'ntaḥpure śavaḥ || 20 ||

Of the three most recent, your brahmin husband has turned to ashes. Your king lies laid out among garlands, a corpse in the inner palace.

saṃsāramaṇḍale hyasmiṃstṛtīyo vasudhādhipaḥ | mahāsaṃsārajaladhiṃ patito bhramamāgataḥ || 21 ||

In this wheel of worldly life, the third lord of the earth has fallen into the great ocean of this world and has begun to wander in confusion.

223.27.22

bhogakallolakalanāvikalo malacetanaḥ | jāḍyajarjaracidvṛttiḥ saṃsārāmbhodhikacchapaḥ || 22 ||

Shaken by the waves of pleasure, his awareness soiled, his mind worn out and dull, he is like a tortoise in the ocean of worldly life.

citrāṇi rājakāryāṇi kurvannapyākulānyapi | suptaḥ sthito jaḍatayā na jāgarti bhavabhrame || 23 ||

Even while doing all sorts of royal duties, and even while troubled by them, he stays asleep through dullness; he does not wake up amid the confusion of this world.

īśvaro'hamahaṃ bhogī siddho'haṃ balavānsukhī | ityanarthamahārajvā valito vaśatāṃ gataḥ || 24 ||

'I am the ruler, I am the enjoyer, I am accomplished, I am powerful, I am happy' — bound by this great rope of harm, he has come completely under its control.

'मैं मालिक हूँ, मैं भोगने वाला हूँ, मैं सिद्ध हूँ, मैं ताकतवर हूँ, मैं सुखी हूँ' - इस बड़ी नुकसानदायक रस्सी से बँधकर, वह पूरी तरह इसके काबू में आ गया है।

253.27.25

tatkasya vada bhartustvāṃ samīpaṃ varavarṇini | vātyā vanāntaraṃ gandhalekhāmiva vanānnaye || 25 ||

So tell me, fair one, whose husband's presence shall I take you to — like a whirlwind carrying a streak of fragrance from one forest into another forest?

anya eva hi saṃsāraḥ so'nyo brahmāṇḍamaṇḍapaḥ | anyā eva tatā vatse vyavahāraparamparāḥ || 26 ||

That world over there is a completely different world, child; that dome of the universe is different too; and different, and spread out far, is the whole chain of everyday dealings that goes on inside it.

saṃsāramaṇḍalānīha tāni pārśve sthitānyapi | dūraṃ yojanakoṭīnāṃ koṭayasteṣviha antaram || 27 ||

These worlds here, even though they stand right next to each other, are still far apart — the distance between them is crores upon crores of miles.

ākāśamātrameteṣāmidam paśya vapuḥ punaḥ | merumandarakoṭīnāṃ koṭayasteṣvavasthitāḥ || 28 ||

And look again — the body of these worlds is nothing but empty space, yet inside that space stand crores upon crores of Meru and Mandara mountains.

paramāṇau paramāṇau sarvavargānirargalam | mahāciteḥ sphurantyarkarucīva trasareṇavaḥ || 29 ||

In every single atom, without any limit, whole clusters of such worlds shine out from the great consciousness — like dust motes glittering in a ray of the sun.

mahārambhagurūṇyevamapi brahmāṇḍakāni hi | tulayā dhānakāmātramapi tāni bhavanti no || 30 ||

So even though these universes seem huge and heavy to begin with, when weighed on a scale they do not come to even the weight of a single grain of rice.

nānāratnāmalodyotō vanavadbhāti khē yathā | pṛthvyādibhūtarahitā jagaccidbhāti cintayā || 31 ||

Just as the pure shine of many gems can look like a forest hanging in the sky, so this world, which has no earth or other such elements in it at all, appears through thought as pure consciousness.

kacati jñaptirevedaṃ jagadityādi nātmani | natu pṛthvyādi saṃpannaṃ sargādāveva kiṃcana || 32 ||

This thing that shines as 'this is the world' and so on is only knowing itself, shining within the self; nothing made of earth and the other elements ever actually came into being, not even at the very start of creation.

yathā taraṅgaḥ sarasi bhūtvā bhūtvā punarbhavet | vicitrākārakālāṅgadeśājñaptāvalaṃ tathā || 33 ||

Just as a wave on a lake rises again and again, taking shape and then rising once more, in exactly that way varied shapes, times, bodies and places simply keep arising within awareness — that much is enough to say.

līlovāca | evametajjaganmātarmayā smṛtamihādhunā | mamedaṃ rājasaṃ janma na tamo na ca sāttvikam || 34 ||

Lila said: Mother of the world, I have just now remembered all this. This present birth of mine is a rajasic one — it is neither tamasic nor sattvic.

brahmaṇastvavatīrṇāyā aṣṭau janmaśatāni me | nānāyonīnyatītāni paśyāmīvādhunā punaḥ || 35 ||

Since I came down from Brahma, I have had eight hundred births in many different forms; now I see all of them again, as if right before my eyes.

saṃsāramanḍale devi kasmiṃścidabhavaṃ purā | lokāntarābjabhramarī vidyādharavarāṅganā || 36 ||

O goddess, once, in a certain world, I was a fine Vidyadhara woman who flitted like a bee over the lotuses of another world.

durvāsanākaluṣitā tato'haṃ mānuṣī sthitā | saṃsāramanḍale'nyasmipannageśvarakāminī || 37 ||

Then, stained by bad desires, I became a human woman; and in another world I was the beloved wife of a king of serpents.

kadambakundajambīrakarañjavanavāsinī | patrāmbaradharā śyāmā śabaryahamathābhavaṃ || 38 ||

After that I became a dark-skinned Shabari woman, living in a forest of kadamba, jasmine, citron and karanja trees, wearing clothes made of leaves.

vanavāsanayā mugdhā saṃpannāhamathoddhata | gulucchanayanā patrahastā vanavilāsinī || 39 ||

Charmed by my liking for forest life, I then grew wild and proud — my eyes like clusters of flowers, a branch of leaves in my hand, delighting in the forest.

puṇyāśramalatā sāhaṃ munisaṅgapavitritā | vanāgnidagdhā tasyaiva kanyābhūvaṃ mahāmuneḥ || 40 ||

I was a creeper in a holy hermitage, made pure by the company of sages; then, after being burned in a forest fire, I was born again as the daughter of that same great sage.

astrītvaphaladātṝṇāṃ karmaṇāṃ pariṇāmataḥ | rājāhamabhavaṃ śrīmān surāṣṭreṣu samāḥ śatam || 41 ||

As the fruit of deeds that ripened into the reward of not being a woman, I then became a wealthy king in Surashtra for a hundred years.

tālīnāṃ talakaccheṣu rājaduṣkṛtadoṣataḥ | nakulī navavarṣāṇi kuṣṭhanaṣṭāṅgikābhavaṃ || 42 ||

Because of the wrong I did as king, I then became a mongoose for nine years among the marshy palmyra groves, my limbs eaten away by leprosy.

varṣāṇyaṣṭau surāṣṭreṣu devi gotvaṃ kṛtaṃ mayā | mohāddurjanaduṣṭājñabālagopālalīlayā || 43 ||

O goddess, for eight years in Surashtra I lived as a cow — through delusion, by the evil order of a wicked man, and at the mercy of a young cowherd boy's whims.

vihangyā vairavinyastā vāgurā vipināvanau | kleśena mahatā cchinnā adhamā vāsanā iva || 44 ||

As a bird, I was caught in a net that hatred had set for me deep in a forest; with great suffering I tore free of it — just as one tears free of a low, base desire.

karṇikākroḍaśayyāsu viśrāntamalinā saha | padmakuḍmalakośeṣu bhuktakiṃjalkayā rahaḥ || 45 ||

As that bird, I rested with my mate on beds in the very heart of the lotus, and secretly feasted inside the closed lotus buds on their pollen.

bhraantamuttungashrngaasu harinyaa haarinetrayaa | vanasthaleeshu ramyaasu kiraataahatamarmayaa || 46 ||

As a lovely-eyed deer, I wandered over high mountain peaks and through beautiful forest glades — until a hunter's arrow struck me in a vital spot.

drshtam nashtaasu dikshvabdhikallolairuhyamaanayaa | matsyaambukacchapaacchode moghamananataadanam || 47 ||

Carried along by the ocean's waves, with the very directions lost from my sight, I lived among fish, water and turtles — uselessly opening and closing my mouth again and again.

peetam charmanvateeteeere gaayantyaa madhurasvaram | pulindyaa surataanteshu naalikerarasaasavam || 48 ||

As a Pulinda woman, singing in a sweet voice on the bank of the river Charmanvati, I drank coconut-juice wine after making love.

saaraseesarasaalinyaa seetkaaramadhurasvaram | saarasah surataih svairenam saamantashchaaruranjitah || 49 ||

As a female crane among the many cranes in the lake, I made a sweet sighing sound of passion, and a male crane nearby became joyful through our free lovemaking.

taaleetamaalakunjeshu taralaanananetrayaa | ksheebaprekshanavikshobhaih krutam kaantaavalokanam || 50 ||

In groves of palm and tamala trees, with restless eyes and a restless face, I gave my lover loving glances, stirred by looks heavy with passion.

kanakasyandasaṃdohasundarairaṅgapañjaraiḥ | svarge'psarombujinyāśu toṣitāḥ suraṣaṭpadāḥ || 51 ||

In heaven, I was one lotus among a whole pond of apsara-lotuses, our bodies beautiful like streams of flowing gold, and we quickly delighted the gods, who came to us like bees.

maṇikāñcanamāṇikyamuktānikarabhūtale | kalpadrumavane merau yūnā saha rataṃ kṛtam || 52 ||

On Mount Meru, in the forest of wish-granting trees, on ground covered with heaps of jewels, gold, rubies and pearls, I made love with a young man.

kallolākulakacchāsu lasadgucchalatāsu ca | velāvanaguhāsvabdheściraṃ kūrmatayā sthitam || 53 ||

On marshy shores crowded with waves, and among bright clusters of vines, in the caves of the forests along the ocean's edge, I stayed a long time as a tortoise.

tarattāratarāṅgāsu dolanaṃ sarasālinām | calacchadapaṭālīṣu rājahaṃsyaṃ mayā kṛtam || 54 ||

Among rows of lakes with their high rolling waves, amid rows of fluttering wings, I became a royal swan, swaying on the waves.

śālmalīdalalolānāmāndolandaridratām | maśakasya mayālokya dīnaṃ maśakayā smitam || 55 ||

Seeing the mosquito swinging feebly on a leaf of the silk-cotton tree, I, as a female mosquito, smiled at him sadly.

tarattārataraṅgāsu cañcadvīcyagracumbanaiḥ bhrāntaṁ śailasravantīṣu jalavañjulalīlayā || 56 ||

On high rolling waves, with kisses at the tips of trembling ripples, I wandered through mountain streams, playing like a creature of the water.

gandhamādanamandāramandire madanāturā pātitāḥ pādayoḥ pūrvaṁ vidyādharakumārakāḥ || 57 ||

In the grove of mandara trees on Mount Gandhamadana, tormented by desire, I once made young Vidyadhara princes fall at my feet.

karnikarpūrapūreṣu talpeṣu vyasanāturā ciraṁ vilulitāsmīndubimbeṣviva śaśiprabhā || 58 ||

On beds heaped with camphor pollen, tormented by longing, I tossed about for a long time, like moonlight trembling on the disk of the moon.

yoniṣvanekavidhaduḥkhaśatānvitāsu bhrāntaṁ mayonnamanasannamanākulātmā saṁsāradīrghasaritaścalayā laharyā durvāravātahariṇīsaraṇakrameṇa || 59 ||

I wandered through births filled with hundreds of kinds of suffering, my mind troubled by rising and falling, carried on the moving wave of the long river of transmigration, the way a doe runs, driven by an unstoppable wind, unable to stop.
