13.26.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti te varavarṇinyau tato brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalāt | nirgatya anyadanuprāpte yatra tadbrāhmaṇāspadam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: In this way the two beautiful women left the sphere of the cosmic egg, and reaching another place, arrived where that home of the Brahmin was.

tato dadṛśatuḥ sadma svamevaṃ siddhayoṣitau | adṛśye eva lokasya maṇḍapaṃ brāhmaṇāspadam || 2 ||

Then the two Siddha women saw their own home - a hall in the Brahmin's house, invisible to ordinary people.

33.26.3

cintāvidhuradāsīkaṃ bāṣpaklinnāṅganāmukham | vidhvastaprāyavadanaṃ śīrṇaparṇāmbujopamam || 3 ||

Its maids were troubled with worry, the women's faces were wet with tears, their faces looked almost destroyed, like withered lotus leaves.

naṣṭotsavapuraprāyam agastyāttamivārṇavam | grīṣmadagdhamivodyānaṃ vidyuddagdhamivadrumam || 4 ||

It was like a city whose festivals had ended, like the ocean swallowed up by the sage Agastya, like a garden scorched by summer heat, like a tree burnt by lightning.

53.26.5

vātacchinnamivāmbhodaṃ himadagdhamivāmbujam | alpasnehadśaṃ dīpamivālokanabhedanam || 5 ||

It was like a cloud torn apart by the wind, like a lotus burnt by frost, like a lamp whose wick has almost no oil left in it - painful to look at.

āsannamṛtyukaruṇākulavaktrakāntisaṃśīrṇajīrṇataruparṇavanopamānam | vṛṣṭivyapāyaparidhūsaradeśarūkṣaṃ jātaṃ gṛheśvaraviyogahataṃ gṛhaṃ tat || 6 ||

That house, struck down by separation from its master, had become like a forest of old withered leaves - its beauty faded with the sorrow of approaching death - dry and dust-grey like land after the rains have stopped.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha sā nirmalajñānacirābhyāsena sundarī | sampannā satyasaṃkalpā satyakāmā ca devavat || 7 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Then, through long practice of pure knowledge, that beautiful woman gained the power that whatever she willed came true and whatever she wished for came true, just like a god.

cintayāmāsa māmete devīṃ cemāṃ svabandhavaḥ | paśyantu tāvatsāmānyalalanārūpadhāraṇīm || 8 ||

She thought: "Let these kinsmen of mine see me, and this goddess with me, for now only in the form of ordinary women."

tato gṛhajanas tatra sa dadarśāṅganādvayam | lakṣmīgauryoryugamiva samudbhāsitamandiram || 9 ||

Then the people of that house saw the two women there, shining like the pair of goddesses Lakshmi and Gauri, lighting up the whole house.

103.26.10

āpādavividhāmlānamālāvasanasundaram | vasantalakṣmyoryugalamivāmoditakānanam || 10 ||

They were beautiful, wearing garlands of many kinds that had not wilted and robes that reached down to their feet, like a pair of Spring's own goddesses filling a grove with delight.

sarvauṣadhivana grāmaṃ pūrayantyau rasāyanaiḥ | śītalāhlādasukhadaṃ candradvayamivoditam || 11 ||

They filled every herb, forest and village around with their nectar-like essence, giving cool and joyful comfort, like two moons risen together.

123.26.12

lambālakalatālolalocanālivilokanaiḥ | kiratkavalayonmiśramālatīkusumotkarān || 12 ||

With their hanging curls like tendrils, and eyes that glanced about restlessly like bees, they scattered heaps of blue-lotus flowers mixed with jasmine blossoms.

133.26.13

drutahēmarasāpūrasaritsaraṇahāriṇā | dēhaprabhāpravāhēṇa kanakīkṛtakānanam || 13 ||

And with the stream of light from their bodies - as charming as a river flowing full of molten gold - they turned the whole grove golden.

sahajāyā vapurlakṣmyā līlādolāvilāsinaḥ | ta ete ca taraṅgāḍhyā nijalāvaṇyavāridhēḥ || 14 ||

These charms of theirs, playful like swings in sport, born of their bodies' natural beauty, were like abundant waves rising from the ocean of their own loveliness.

vilolabāhulatikāyugēnāruṇapāṇinā | kirannavanavaṃ haimaṃ kalpavṛkṣalatāvanam || 15 ||

With her pair of restless, vine-like arms and her rosy hands, she scattered ever-fresh gold - like a grove of wish-fulfilling-tree creepers.

163.26.16

pādairamṛditāmlānapuṣpakomalapallavaiḥ | sthalābjadalamālābhairaspṛśadbhūtalaṃ punaḥ || 16 ||

With her feet, soft as unbruised and unwithered young flower buds, and looking like garlands of land-lotus petals, she touched the ground once more.

tālītamālakhaṇḍānāṃ śuṣkāṇāṃ śuciscochiṣām | ālokanāmṛtāsekairjanayadbālapallavān || 17 ||

With just the nectar of her glance sprinkled upon them, she made fresh young shoots sprout on withered clusters of tali and tamala trees, whose radiance had once been pure and bright.

namo'stu vanadevībhyāmityuktvā kusumāñjalim | tatyāja jyeṣṭhaśarmātha sārdhaṃ gṛhajanena saḥ || 18 ||

Saying, "Salutations to these two forest goddesses," Jyeshthasharma, together with the household, then offered them a handful of flowers.

papāta pādayorgēhē tayorvai kusumāñjaliḥ | prālēyasīkarāsāraḥ padminyā iva padmayoḥ || 19 ||

That handful of flowers fell at their feet in the house, like a shower of frost-drops falling on the two lotuses of a lotus plant.

jyeṣṭhaśarmādaya ūcuḥ | jayataṃ vanadevyau no duḥkhanāśārthamāgate | prāyaḥ paraparitrāṇameva karma nijaṃ satām || 20 ||

Jyeshthasharma and the others said, "Glory to you, O forest goddesses, who have come to end our sorrow. Truly, the natural work of good people is mostly just this - to save others."

iti tadvacanānte te devyāvūcaturādarāt | ākhyāta duḥkhaṃ yenāyaṃ lakṣyate duḥkhito janaḥ || 21 ||

After hearing these words, the two goddesses said respectfully, "Tell us what sorrow it is that has made these people appear so grief-stricken."

jyeṣṭhaśarmādayaste te devyau prati yathākramam | nijaṃ taddhuḥkhamācakhyurdampativyasanātmakam || 22 ||

Jyeshthasharma and the others then told the two goddesses, one after another, about their own sorrow - the calamity that had befallen the husband and wife.

jyeṣṭhaśarmādaya ūcuḥ | devyāvabhavatāṃ snigdhāviha brāhmaṇadampatī | sarvātithī kulakarau stambhābhūtau dvijasthiteḥ || 23 ||

Jyeshthasharma and the others said, "O goddesses, here there lived a loving Brahmin couple. They welcomed every guest, they were the builders of this family, and they were the very pillars holding up the life of the Brahmins here."

tāvadya gṛhamutsṛjya saputrapaśubāndhavam | svargaṃ gatau naḥ pitarau tena śūnyaṃ jagattrayam || 24 ||

Today, leaving behind this house with its sons, cattle and kinsmen, our two parents have gone to heaven - and because of that, all three worlds feel empty to us.

pakṣiṇo gṛhamāruhya vikṣipantaḥ pratikṣaṇam | dehaṃ śūnye mṛtaṃ bhaktyā śocanti madhuraiḥ svaraiḥ || 25 ||

The birds sit on the roof of the house, moving restlessly every moment, and out of love they mourn the dead body lying in the empty house, crying in sweet voices.

guhāgurugurārāvapralāpalapanākulaḥ | saritsthūlāśrudhārābhiḥ pariroditi parvataḥ || 26 ||

The mountain is full of deep groaning and muttering echoing in its caves, and it weeps all around, its rivers falling like thick streams of tears.

nirjarākrandakāriṇyo mukāmbarapayodharāḥ | taptaḥniḥśvāsavidhvastāḥ paraṃ kārśyamitā diśaḥ || 27 ||

The directions of the sky look like women whose upper cloth has slipped loose from their breasts; they make even the gods cry out, and burning sighs have left them terribly thin.

kṣatavikṣatasarvāṅgaḥ karuṇākrandakarkaśaḥ | upavāsarato grāmo dīno mṛtiparaḥ sthitaḥ || 28 ||

The village, wounded and torn in every part, is harsh with pitiful crying; it has taken to fasting, and stands wretched, waiting for death.

divasaṃ prati vṛkṣāṇāmavaśyāyāśrubindavaḥ | gucchalocanakośebhyastāpoṣṇāni patantyadhaḥ || 29 ||

Every day, from the bud-clusters of the trees that look like eyes, drops fall down like tears, hot with grief.

praśāntajanasaṃcārā rathyā kṣāravidthūsarā | vidhavāvigatānandā saṃśūnyahṛdayā sthitā || 30 ||

The street, where people no longer walk, is grey with ash-dust; it stands like a widow who has lost all joy, her heart completely empty.

kokilālipralāpinyo vṛṣṭibāṣpahatā latāḥ| uṣṇoṣṇaśvasanā dehaṃ ghanti pallavapāṇibhiḥ || 31 ||

The creeper plants, made to wail by the voices of cuckoos and bees, beaten by rain like tears, breathe hot sigh after hot sigh, and beat their own bodies with their leaves as if with hands.

ātmānaṃ śatadhā kartuṃ bṛhacchvabhraśilātale| nirjharāḥ prapatantyete tāpataptasharīrakāḥ || 32 ||

The waterfalls, their bodies burning with grief, fall down onto the great rocky pit as if trying to break themselves into a hundred pieces.

niḥśaṅkayā gataśrīkā mūkā vilulitāśayāḥ| andhena tamasā pūrṇā gṛhā gahanatāṃ gatāḥ || 33 ||

The houses have lost their beauty without any doubt; they are silent, their belongings scattered and disturbed, filled with a blind darkness, and have turned as dense and hard to enter as a thicket.

udyānapuṣpakhaṇḍebhyo rudadbhyo bhramarāravaiḥ| pūtigandho viniryāti svāmodāparanāmakaḥ || 34 ||

From the flower clusters in the garden, weeping with the humming of bees, a foul smell now comes out, though that same thing is otherwise called sweet fragrance.

caitradrumavilāsinyo virasāḥ prativāsaram| latāḥ kṛśā vilīyante sakucadgucchalocanāḥ || 35 ||

The creeper plants, which used to bloom playfully on the trees in spring, now turn dull and joyless day after day; they grow thin and waste away, their cluster-buds, like eyes, shrinking shut.

prakṣeptumambudhau dehaṃ pravṛttā gantumākulāḥ | kulyāḥ kalakalālolaṃ dolayantyastanuṃ bhuvi || 36 ||

The water channels, set out to throw their own body into the ocean, restless to go, sway their thin form on the ground with a rushing, babbling sound.

aśaṅkamaśakāpātaspandamapyaticāpalam | kalayantyaḥ sthitā vāpyo nispandānandamātmani || 37 ||

The step-wells notice without fail even the very slight, unsteady tremor caused by a falling mosquito, yet they themselves stay still, their own joy frozen motionless inside them.

gāyatkinnaragandharvavidyādharasurāṅganam | nūnamadya nabho jātamasmatttātābhylankṛtam || 38 ||

Surely today the sky, echoing with the songs of kinnaras, gandharvas, vidyadharas, and the wives of the gods, has been adorned by our father.

taddevyau kriyatāṃ tāvadasmākaṃ śokanāśanam | mahatāṃ darśanaṃ nāma na kadācana niṣphalam || 39 ||

So, O two goddesses, please now remove our sorrow; the sight of great beings, indeed, is never without result.

ityuktavantaṃ sā putraṃ mūrdhni pasparśa pāṇinā | pallavenānatā namraṃ mūlagranthimivābjinī || 40 ||

When he had said this, she touched her son's head with her hand, bending low with her shoot, like a lotus plant touching its own bent root-knot.

tasyāḥ sparśena tenāsau duḥkhadaurbhāgyasaṅkaṭam | jahau prāvṛḍghanāsaṅgādgrīṣmatāpamivācalaḥ || 41 ||

By that touch of hers, he threw off his crisis of sorrow and misfortune, just as a mountain loses the summer heat when the rain clouds of the monsoon touch it.

sarvo gṛhajanaḥ so'tha tayordevyorvilokanāt | lakṣmīvānduḥkhanirmukto babhūvāmṛtapo yathā || 42 ||

Then all the people of the household, by seeing those two goddesses, became prosperous and free from sorrow, like someone who has drunk nectar.

śrīrāma uvāca | tayāsya līlayā mātrā putrasya jyeṣṭhaśarmaṇaḥ | kasmānna darśanaṃ dattaṃ mohaṃ tāvannirākuru || 43 ||

Sri Rama said: Why did that mother not give a real sight of herself, so easily, to her son Jyeshthasharma? Please clear this confusion of mine.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | buddhaḥ pṛthvyādibodhena yena pṛthvyādisaṅghakaḥ | tasya piṇḍātmatāṃ dhatte vyomaivānyasya kevalam || 44 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: The one who knows the mass made of earth and the rest through the awareness of earth and the rest, for him that mass takes on the nature of a solid lump; for another, it is nothing but empty space.

asadevāṅga sadiva bhāti pṛthvyādivedanāt | yathā bālasya vetālo nābhāti tadavedanāt || 45 ||

Dear one, what is truly unreal appears as if it were real, because of the sense of earth and the rest, just as a ghost does not appear to a child who has no idea of it.

yathā pṛthvyādinā bhātamapṛthvyādi bhavetkṣaṇāt| svapne svapnapariñānāttathā jāgratyapi sphuṭam || 46 ||

Just as what appears as earth and the rest can, in a dream, turn into something other than earth and the rest the moment one realises within the dream that it is a dream, so too, clearly, this happens even in the waking state.

pṛthvyādi khatayā buddhaṃ khamityevānubhūyate| tathāhi kṣubdhadhātūnāṃ kuḍyeṣu kha ivodyamaḥ || 47 ||

Earth and the rest, once understood as being space, is experienced as nothing but space, just as, for someone whose bodily humors are disturbed, a shape seems to rise on the walls, as if out of empty air.

svapne nagaramurvīṃ vā śūnyaṃ khātaṃ ca budhyate| svaprāṅganā ca kurute śūnyāpyarthakriyāṃ nṛṇām || 48 ||

In a dream one sees a city, or the earth, or an empty dug pit; and one's own dream-wife too, though she is nothing real, does real work for the man.

khaṃ pṛthvyāditayā buddhaṃ pṛthvyādi bhavati kṣaṇāt| mūrcchāyāṃ paraloko'pi pratyakṣamanubhūyate || 49 ||

Empty space, when grasped as earth and other elements, turns into earth and the rest in an instant. Even during a fainting spell, a person directly experiences the other world, as if it were right in front of them.

bālo vyomaiva vetālaṃ mriyamāṇo'mbare vanam| keśoṇḍrakaṃ khamanyastu khamanyo vetti mauktikam || 50 ||

A child sees a ghost in the bare sky. A dying man sees a forest in the sky. One person sees a strand of hair floating in empty space, while another sees a pearl in that very same empty space.

trastakṣībārdhanidrāśca nauyānāśca sadaiva sye | vetālavanavṛkṣādi paśyantyanubhavanti ca || 51 ||

Frightened people, drunk people, those who are half-asleep, and travelers on boats always see and experience, in the same way, ghosts, forests, trees, and such things.

yathābhāvitameteṣāṃ padārthānāmato vapuḥ | abhyāsajanitaṃ bhāti nāstyekaṃ paramārthatḥ || 52 ||

Just as these things are imagined, that is the form in which they appear - this happens only out of habit. In ultimate truth, not even one of them truly exists.

līlayā tu yathāvastu buddhvā pṛthvyādināstitā | ākāśameva saṃvittyā bhāti bhrāntitayoditam || 53 ||

But once a person understands, as though it were a game, the true nature of things - that earth and the rest do not really exist - then it becomes clear that it is space alone which, through consciousness, appears and has arisen as an illusion.

brahmātmaikacidākāśamātrabodhavato muneḥ | putramitra kalatrāṇi kathaṃ kāni kadā kutaḥ || 54 ||

For the sage who knows only the single consciousness-space that is Brahman, the self, sons, friends, and wives - how could they exist, which ones, when, and from where?

dṛśyamādāvanutpannaṃ yacca bhātyajameva tat | samyagjñānavatāmeva rāgadveṣadṛśo kṛtaḥ || 55 ||

The visible world was never born at the start, and whatever appears is itself unborn. Only people of true, complete knowledge see this; others see the world shaped by their own attachment and aversion.

hastaḥ śirasi yaddatto līlayā jyeṣṭhaśarmaṇaḥ| tatprabhāvasthitārambhasaṃbodhāyāściteḥ phalaṃ || 56 ||

The hand that was playfully placed on the head of Jyeshthasharman - that is the fruit of the awakened consciousness whose power stood behind that very beginning.

bodho hi cetati yathaiva tathā śubhāni sūkṣmastu khādapi tathātitatarāṃ viśuddhaḥ| sarvatra rāghava sa eva padārthajālaṃ svapneṣu kalpitapureṣvanubhūtametat || 57 ||

Awareness knows things exactly as they are; in the same way it also knows pure and subtle things - and that subtlety is even purer than empty space itself, far more so. Everywhere, Raghava, it is that same awareness which is this whole web of objects - and this is experienced just as things are experienced in dreams, in cities imagined in the mind.
