17.191.1

śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ cet tanmuniśreṣṭha paramārthamayaṃ jagat | sarvadā sarvabhāvātmā nōdēti na ca śāmyati || 1 ||

Shri Rama said: If it is so, O best of sages, this world is of the nature of the highest truth. It always exists in all forms, neither arises nor ceases.

bhrāntireveyaṃ ābhāti jagadābhāsarūpiṇī | bhrāntirevāpi vā naiva brahmasattaiva kevalā || 2 ||

This world appears as a mere illusion, a reflection. It is indeed an illusion, or perhaps not even that, but only the pure existence of Brahman.

37.191.3

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kākatālīyavadbrahma yadbhātīvātmanātmani | sa tenaivātmanātmaiva jagadityavabudhyate || 3 ||

Vasistha said: Just as a crow sees a palm fruit as a reflection, similarly, Brahman appears as the self within the self. By that very self, it is realized as the world.

śrīrāma uvāca | kathaṃ tapatyaho'dikkaṃ sargasyādau paratra ca | kathaṃ bhittyā vinā bhāti vada dīpaprabhā mune || 4 ||

Shri Rama said: How does the sun shine at the beginning of creation and in the hereafter? How does the light of a lamp appear without a wall? Tell me, O sage.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | itthaṃrūpamidaṃ bhāti citirūpaprabhāprabhā | paśya saivātmanā'āste yatprakāśādibhireva ca || 5 ||

Vasistha said: This appears in such a form, the light of consciousness. See, it exists by itself, by the very means of illumination and so on.

bhittau prakāśo bhātīva tatkuḍyaṃ bhāsanaṃ ca tat dṛśyasyāsaṃbhavādādau vaktā draṣṭā pradṛśyatām || 6 ||

Light shines on the wall, and the wall itself is the illuminator. Initially, the seer and the speaker are to be seen, as the seen does not exist.

tasmāddraṣṭāsti no dṛśyaṃ naivāstīdamanāmayam cittaprabhaivātmanā bhittirbhavatyābhāsanaṃ tathā || 7 ||

Therefore, the seer exists, not the seen. This is not without flaw. The wall becomes the illuminator by the self-luminous consciousness.

draṣṭṛdṛśyātmikaikaiava svātmanaiva virājate svapnādiṣu yathehādya draṣṭṛdṛśyātmikā satī || 8 ||

The seer and the seen are one and the same, shining by their own self. In dreams and such, they are both the seer and the seen.

cidbhātyeva hi sargādau kacantī bhāti sargavat bhāsanīyaṃ ca bhānaṃ ca rūpaṃ yatra svayaṃprabhā || 9 ||

Consciousness alone shines at the beginning of creation, illuminating like the creation itself. It is the illuminator and the illuminated, the form where it is self-luminous.

ekaiva cittrtrayaṃ bhūtvā sargādau bhāti sargavat eṣa eva svabhāvo'syā yadevaṃ bhāti bhāsurā || 10 ||

Being one, consciousness appears as three at the beginning of creation, shining like the creation itself. This is its very nature, that it shines thus, luminous.

etattu svapnasaṃkalpanagareṣvanubhūyateitthaṃ nāma tapatyeṣā ciddīptiḥ prathamoditā || 11 ||

This is experienced in the cities of dream and imagination. This is called the first dawn of the light of consciousness.

nabhasyeva nabhorūpā yadidaṃ bhāsate jagatanādyantamidaṃ tasyāḥ sargāḥ sargātmabhāsanam || 12 ||

Like the sky, the world appears as the form of the sky. This, without beginning or end, is the creation and the manifestation of the self.

svabhāvabhūtamasmākaṃ tvidaṃ bhāti mahātmanāmbhāsyabhāsakasaṃvittirnaśyati pratibhāmitā || 13 ||

Our own nature appears as the great self. The consciousness that illuminates the illuminator does not perish, it is self-evident.

tadā tu nāma sargādau nāsīdbhāsyo na bhāsakaḥmithyājñānavaśādeva sthāṇau puṃspratyayo yathā || 14 ||

Then, at the beginning of creation, there was neither the illuminated nor the illuminator. Due to false knowledge, there was a notion of duality, like the notion of a man.

tathātmani dvitābhānāccitte dvaitavibhāsanamsargādau na ca bhāsyosti na ca vā nāsti bhāsakaḥ || 15 ||

Similarly, in the self, due to the appearance of duality in the mind, at the beginning of creation, there is neither the illuminated nor the illuminator.

kāraṇābhāvatodvaitaṃ cidvyomābhāti kevalam | kiṃ nāma kāraṇaṃ brūhi sargādau citi vastutaḥ || 16 ||

Due to the absence of a cause, only the non-dual consciousness shines | What is the cause, tell me, in reality, at the beginning of creation?

abhāvādarthadṛṣṭīnāṃ cidevetthaṃ prakāśate | jagadbhānamidaṃ yattanna jāgranna suṣuptakam || 17 ||

Due to the absence of objects, consciousness alone shines thus | This appearance of the world is neither waking nor deep sleep

na svapnosambhavāddṛśyaṃ kevalaṃ brahma bhāsate | cinmātravyomasargādāvitthaṃ kacakacāyate || 18 ||

Due to the impossibility of a dream, the seen is not real; only Brahman shines | Thus, in the beginning of the creation of the space of pure consciousness, it shines

yatsvameva vapurvetti jagadityajaganmayam | cinmātravyomasargādāvitthaṃ bhāti vikāsanam || 19 ||

That which knows its own form as the world, which is non-worldly | Thus, in the beginning of the creation of the space of pure consciousness, it shines as expansion

yadidaṃ jagadityeva śūnyatvāmbarayoriva || 20 ||

That which is this world is indeed like emptiness and space

buddhvā ca yāvatsvanubhūtiyuktaṃ sthātavyametena vikalpamuktam | pāṣāṇamaunaṃ kujanena tūktaṃ na grāhyamajñena hi bhukta muktam || 21 ||

Having understood, one should remain in the state of self-realization as much as possible | This alternative has been stated | Silence like a stone has been advised by the wicked | It should not be accepted by the ignorant, for it has been said to be enjoyed
