Vasishtha said: Whatever is imagined by someone, that person sees it exactly as imagined. Imagination itself would not be otherwise, as it is not devoid of such a cause.
As this visible world is imagined by the mind of someone, that person knows it exactly so. Whatever is imagined by anyone, that person knows it exactly so.
That which is the essence of imagination and the imagined is Brahman by nature. Just as a being has hair, nails, etc., it is of the nature of imagination.
Where everything, from beginning to end, appears as diverse and manifold, there Brahman alone is the peaceful, single essence. What then is the cause of anything?
neha śūnyaṃ na vā śūnyaṃ na sannāsanna madhyatā | vidyate na mahāśūnye na neti na na neti ca || 11 ||
Here, it is neither void nor non-void, neither real nor unreal, nor a middle state | It does not exist in the great void, neither this nor that nor not this nor not that
śrīrāma uvāca | atajjñaviṣaye brahmannkārye kāraṇasaṃbhave | kimakāraṇatātma syātkathaṃ veti vada prabho || 13 ||
Sri Rama said: In the realm of the unknowable, O Brahman, in the cause and effect, what is the nature of the uncaused? How is it so? Please tell me, O Lord.
Sri Vasistha said: The unknowable, by name, does not exist at all, as far as the knower of the knowable is concerned | What kind of inquiry is there about the non-existent sky-flower?
Those who are of the nature of single awareness, peaceful, and of the form of condensed knowledge | How can there be inquiry into non-existent matters for them?
In the experience of dream-earth and so on, what is the cause of the unenlightened? Tell me, except for the nature of consciousness, what kind of dream-object is it?
svapnārtho hyaparijñāto mahāmohabharapradaḥ | parijñāto na mohāya yathā sargāstathaiva ca || 23 ||
The dream-object, indeed, when not fully known, causes great delusion. When fully known, it does not cause delusion, just as creations do not.
kiṃ dhyātṛśatalabdhasya dhyeyasyaiakasya kāraṇam | kiṃ ca gandharvanagare pure bhittiṣu kāraṇam || 26 ||
What is the cause of the single object of meditation obtained by hundreds of meditators? And what is the cause of the paintings in the city of Gandharvas?
Dharma and other virtues are not the cause of the embodied form, as they are formless. What then is the cause of the body for those who experience creation and other activities?
Therefore, the illusion of causelessness arises, and all things appear to have a cause. In both the ignorant and the wise, all actions arise from a cause.
yadvatsvapnapariñānātsvapne dravyāpahāribhiḥ | na duḥkhākaraṇaṃ tadvajjīvitaṃ tattvadarśanāt || 31 ||
Just as the knowledge of a dream prevents the suffering caused by the theft of objects in the dream, similarly, the knowledge of the truth prevents the suffering of life.
This visible universe, which is the sky of consciousness, was not created at the beginning of creation. It appears like a dream, and nothing else is appropriate here.
Just as the infinite, subtle, and empty nature exists in the great sky, similarly, the creation is both transcendent and immanent, embodying the essence of existence and non-existence.
The states of creation, dissolution, and preservation are thus in the pure, conscious self, just as dream and deep sleep states are in the pure, dense sleep.
Though devoid of earth and other elements, this Brahman, the infinite space, is free from defects. It appears as if it is not itself, just like in dream experiences.
What is the use of scriptures and discussions? Liberation is simply the removal of ignorance. In the creation, there is no cause, no truth, no name, nothing at all.
eṣā ca siddheha hi vāsaneti sā bodhasattaiava nirantaraikā | nānātvanānārahitaiva bhāti svapne cideveha purādirūpā || 44 ||
This is indeed the realization of the true nature of consciousness, which is eternal and uninterrupted. It appears as various forms in dreams, but in reality, it is pure consciousness itself.
