17.107.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | acetyacinmayaṃ viśvaṃ viṣvagābhāti cinnabhaḥ | atra cicetanaṃ cedaṃ cetayamapyevamātmakam || 1 ||

Shri Vasishtha said: The entire universe, which is a combination of the insentient and the conscious, shines everywhere as pure consciousness. Here, both the conscious and the insentient are of the same nature.

ato jīvannapi mṛta iva sarvo'vatiṣṭhate | asāvahaṃ ca tvaṃ ceti jīvanto'pi mṛtā iva || 2 ||

Therefore, even though alive, all beings appear as if dead. 'He is I, and you are,' even though alive, they appear as if dead.

kāṣṭhamauṇamṛtā eva vyavahāragatā api | khagamā eva vā sarve bhāvāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ || 3 ||

Even though engaged in worldly activities, all beings are like dead wood or birds. All entities, whether moving or stationary, are lifeless.

ākāśakācakacyātma yadidaṃ kiṃcidātatam | na kiṃcideva tadviddhi kiṃcidvyomni kuto bhavet || 4 ||

Whatever is spread out in this universe, which is of the nature of space and glass, know that it is nothing. How can anything exist in the void?

keśoṇḍrakanadīvāhadhūmālīmauktikādivat | yatnaṃ kacati tatrāsti nānubhūte'pi vastutā || 5 ||

Like the reflection of a city in a mirror, effort is seen there, even though there is no actual experience of reality.

tathaivāsmiñjagan nāmni cidvyomni kacane cite | anubhūte'pi niḥśūnye kāsthāsthābhāvakaśca kaḥ || 6 ||

In this world, which is known as the realm of consciousness, even when it is experienced as not empty, who is the one who has the sense of 'I'?

cidvālakalpanājāle śūnyātmani nirarthake | avastubhūte pṛthvyādau bhrāntimātrāmbarodaye || 7 ||

In the web of imagination of the realm of consciousness, which is essentially empty and meaningless, the earth and other elements appear as mere illusions.

kimāsthā bālakā brūta mamedamahamityalam | ā jñātaṃ ramate bālasaṅkalpe bāla eva ca || 8 ||

O children, why do you say 'This is mine, I am this'? The ignorant one delights in the imagination of a child.

pṛthvyādyasadvicārairvā vyarthaṃ yāsyati jīvitam | kiñcicca na jñāsyati bhorākāśakṣālanodyataḥ || 9 ||

By contemplating the non-existence of the earth and other elements, life becomes futile. One will not know anything, being engaged in cleansing the empty sky.

sahakāryādipūrvāṇāṃ kāraṇānāmabhāvataḥ | yadādāveva notpannaṃ tannāmādya bhavetkutaḥ || 10 ||

Due to the absence of causes such as cooperative action, what has not arisen at the beginning, how can that be named or exist?

ajātenāsatārtheṇa khena vyavaharanti ye | mūḍhā mṛtamajātaṃ vā tanayaṃ pālayanti te || 11 ||

Those who deal with the unborn and the non-existent as if they were real, they are fools who nurture a dead or unborn child.

kutaḥ pṛthvyādayaḥ kena ke nāma kathamutthitāḥ | cidvyometthamidaṃ śāntaṃ prakacatyātmanātmani || 12 ||

From where do the elements like earth arise, and by whom? What are their names and how do they originate? This peaceful consciousness shines forth in the self.

kāryakāraṇakālādikalpanākulacetasām | evaṃ pṛthvyādayaḥ santi tairbālairalamastu naḥ || 13 ||

For those whose minds are confused by the concepts of cause, effect, time, etc., the elements like earth exist in this way. Let us have no more of such childish notions.

apṛthvyādi jagannāma sapṛthvyādi ca khātmakam | kacatītthaṃ nabhorūpaṃ svapnādiṣviva cinmaṇiḥ || 14 ||

The world is named without elements like earth, and with elements like earth, it shines forth in the form of space, like a jewel of consciousness in dreams.

aṅgaṃ yadetasya cidambarasya nirākṛti svānubhavānumānam | tadetadābhāti mahītalādirūpeṇa vedytetikṛtābhidhānam || 15 ||

The limb of this consciousness, which is formless and known through direct experience and inference, appears in the form of the earth and other elements, described by the Vedas.
