Vasistha said: Just as the names of day and night are used for practical purposes, similarly, the states of waking and dreaming are used for practical purposes.
In reality, there is no difference between the two, just as there is no difference between two waters. Both are indeed one, pure consciousness, the clear sky.
Just as the clear sky remains unaffected by the attraction of the sap from a tree, so too the pure consciousness remains unaffected by the states of waking and dreaming.
For the person who has renounced all desires and has a peaceful mind, the state of equanimity is considered to be the same as the state of pure consciousness.
yadetadāsanaṃ sṛṣṭaṃ kāṣṭhapāṣāṇabhūbhṛtām | cetanānāṃ ca sattātma cidākāśaḥ sa ucyate || 10 ||
That which is the foundation of the created world, including wood, stone, and earth, and the essence of all conscious beings, is called the space of consciousness.
The rise of the three—the seer, the seeing, and the seen—is from that which is the abode of consciousness, free from decay. Know that to be free from impurity.
In which everything exists, from which everything arises, which is everything and everywhere, and which is eternally pervading everything, that is called the space of consciousness.
divi bhūmau bahiścāntastathānyasya samābhidhaḥ | yo vibhātyavabhāsātmā cidākāśaḥ sa ucyate || 14 ||
That which shines as the self-luminous essence in the sky, on earth, outside, inside, and in all other places, that is called the space of consciousness.
In the eternal, firm thread, the universe, which is a mixture of existence and non-existence, stands like a garland. That is the garment of consciousness.
By the opening and closing of whose eyes, the world appears and disappears. Know that to be the supreme consciousness, which is experienced within oneself.
In the transition from one place to another, the form of consciousness that exists in the middle is known as the form of pure consciousness, which is realized in half a blink of an eye from a distance.
This entire universe is pervaded by That (Brahman) alone, as it exists and as it is established | Even though it is endowed with forms, perceptions, and mental impressions, it is still of this nature
Due to a slight awakening, this (universe) appears to be different | Although it is of a non-dual nature, it is the pure form of existence, consciousness, and bliss
Even while seeing objects with the senses, one should have the intention of renunciation | Being awake, one should remain established in the state of deep sleep, being one with the non-dual reality
That alone is the supreme, peaceful, and pure consciousness, which is established in its own nature, unchanging, calm, and benevolent, as if the world is spoken of.
Sri Rama said: If it is so, then explain, O Brahman, the manifestation of the perceiver and the perceived. What is this and how does it appear? Please explain further, O best of speakers.
Sri Vasistha said: Due to the lack of cause, the perceived, which is of an unreal nature, is always non-existent. Even the indication of its perception is highly impossible.
Whatever appears here is an illusion of the perceiver and the perceived. Know that to be the supreme form of the Paramatman, the origin of the universe.
Know this to be the reflection of consciousness, dense with ultimate reality | Thus established, it appears by itself, consisting of the seer, the seen, and the act of seeing
vastutastu dvayābhāvānnābhāsi na ca bhāsanam | kimapīdamanirdeśyaṃ sadvā'sadveti vetti kaḥ || 41 ||
In reality, there is no duality; neither is there any appearance nor any manifestation. What is this indescribable thing? Who knows whether it is real or unreal?
Sri Rama said: If this is so, O Brahman, how does the distinction of cause and effect arise? How does difference come about, and how does truthfulness arise?
In the transition from one state to another, the form of consciousness is the very sky of consciousness. That alone is everything, and there is nothing else.
By the light of the consciousness-space, the mind appears like a ghost, a demon, a vampire, or a child, and the enlightened one appears as if present though absent.
When moving from one place to another, in the middle of the journey, the form of consciousness is perceived. What is this visible world but an illusion of duality and unity?
Thus, the shadow of consciousness shines brilliantly, infinite and radiant. Even without limbs, the emptiness within the visible is like the blueness of the sky.
Diverse experiences do not occur without the presence of aiding causes. Just as in the beginning of creation, the first consciousness is the visible, like in a dream.
