16.99.1

śikhidhvaja uvāca | naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtirlabdhā tvatprasādānmahāmune | sthito'smi gatasaṃdeho viśrāntamatirātmavān || 1 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: My delusion is destroyed, and my memory is regained by your grace, O great sage. I am now established, free from doubts, and my mind is at peace, being self-possessed.

jñātajñeyo mahāmaunī tīrṇamāyāmahārṇavaḥ | śānto'hamanahaṃrūpo jñāḥ sthito'smi nirāmayaḥ || 2 ||

I am a knower of the known, a great silent one, having crossed the great ocean of illusion. I am peaceful, devoid of ego, a knower, established, and free from ailments.

aho nu suciraṃ kālaṃ prabhrānto'haṃ bhavāmbudhau | sthānamakṣayamakṣubdhamadhunā prāptavānaham || 3 ||

Alas, for a very long time, I have been wandering in the ocean of existence. Now, I have attained an eternal, undisturbed state.

evaṃ sthite mune nāsti sāhaṃtādijagattrayam | mūrkhabuddhamidaṃ bhāti yattadbrahmeti vedmyaham || 4 ||

Thus, O sage, there is no world of ego and other dualities. This is a foolish notion; I know that which is Brahman.

kumbha uvāca | jagadeva na yatrāste tatrāhaṃtvaṃvibhāsanam | itthamambarasaṃsāraḥ kva kutaḥ kīdṛśaḥ katham || 5 ||

Kumbha said: Where the world does not exist, there is the manifestation of the ego. Thus, the worldly cycle is like the sky; where, how, and what kind of?

yathāsthitavyavahṛtirmauṇī śāntamanā muniḥ | saumyārṇavodarāvartaparispandavadāsva bho || 6 ||

The sage, who is silent and calm, should remain in his natural state like the gentle waves of the ocean.

brahmarūpamidaṃ śāntamitthamasti yathāsthitam | ahaṃ jagadidaṃ ceti śabdārthātma nabhomayam || 7 ||

This calm Brahman is in its natural state. I am this world, and this world is the essence of sound and meaning, pervading the sky.

idamādyantarahitaṃ sarvaṃ saṃsāranāmakam | ciccamatkṛtināmātma nabhaḥ kacakacāyate || 8 ||

This entire world, devoid of beginning and end, is called samsara. The self, which is the wonder of consciousness, shines in the sky.

saṃniveśadṛśaḥ śāntau tadasti kanakaṃ yathā | jagadādyarthasaṃśāntau brahmedaṃ vidyate tathā || 9 ||

Just as gold exists in a calm state in its natural form, so does Brahman exist in the calm state of the world's essence.

yathā svayaṃbhūḥ saṃkalpaḥ svayaṃ nāma tathaiva hi | etau svavedanāyattau bandhamokṣau vyavasthitau || 10 ||

Just as the self-born resolve is named as such, so are bondage and liberation dependent on self-realization.

ahamityeva saṃkalpo bandhāyātivināśine | nāhamityeva saṃkalpo mokṣāya vimalātmane || 11 ||

The resolve 'I am' leads to bondage which is highly destructive | The resolve 'I am not' leads to liberation for the pure self

yadbandhamokṣasaṃkalpaśabdārthānāṃ sadā satām | svarūpavedanaṃ tatsatkevalatvaṃ ca kathyate || 12 ||

The true nature of the words and meanings of bondage and liberation resolves is always known to the wise | That is called the pure and absolute truth

anahaṃvedanaṃ siddhirahaṃvedanamāpadaḥ | so'hamevānahamiti śuddhabodho bhavātmavān || 13 ||

The realization 'I am not' is perfection | The realization 'I am' is calamity | Therefore, 'I am indeed not I' is the pure knowledge of the self

asaṃkalpanamātreṇa samyagjñānodayātmanā | saṃkalpaḥ kṣīyate siddhyai svayamevāsadātmakaḥ || 14 ||

By mere absence of resolve, through the rise of true knowledge | The resolve dissolves for the sake of perfection, spontaneously becoming non-existent

apratarkye svarūpe hi nāsti kāraṇatā śive | kāraṇābhāvataḥ kāryapadārtho'pi na vidyate || 15 ||

In the unthinkable true nature, there is no causality in Shiva | Due to the absence of cause, even the effect does not exist

padārthābhāvasaṃsiddhau vedanaṃ nopapadyate | kāraṇābhāvato nityamahaṃbhāvasya nodayaḥ || 16 ||

In the absence of objects, perception does not arise | Without a cause, the sense of 'I' does not arise

ahaṃbhāvānudayataḥ saṃsāraḥ kasya kīdṛśaḥ | saṃsārābhāvataḥ sarvaṃ paramevāvaśiṣyate || 17 ||

From the non-arising of the sense of 'I', what kind of world is there? | In the absence of the world, everything remains in the Supreme

yadidaṃ bhāsate tatsatparamevātmani sthitam | paraṃ pare parāpūrṇaṃ samameva vijṛmbhate || 18 ||

Whatever shines here, that is the Supreme Truth established in the Self | The Supreme, in the Supreme, fully complete, shines equally

tena nistimitaṃ sarvaṃ śilākīrṇamivācalam | viddhi raśmimayākāramiva brahma jagatsthitam || 19 ||

Therefore, know that everything is pervaded by the Supreme, like a mountain filled with stones | Know that Brahman is present in the world like the form of rays

puraḥ saṃkalpake naṣṭe saṃkalpanagarasya yat | rūpaṃ tadviddhi jagataḥ khādacchaṃ sadasanmayam || 20 ||

Know that the form of the world is like the form of a city of imagination when the imagination is destroyed | It is like space, both real and unreal

chāyāpuruṣavatspandi śāntaṃ nirmananaṃ jagatjagacchabdārtharahitaṃ yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati || 21 ||

He who sees the world as calm, free from thought, devoid of the meaning of words and objects, like a reflection in a mirror, truly sees.

rūpālokamanaskārā nīrasāgamabhāvanā| samyajjñānāvabodhasya nirvāṇaṃ vai vidurbudhāḥ || 22 ||

The wise know that the cessation of the perception of forms, the world, and mental impressions, along with the absence of attachment, is the true realization of knowledge.

yathāsti vāto niḥspando yathāsti khagatopi vā| yathā hemāsaṃniveśamasti brahma jagattathā || 23 ||

Just as the wind is motionless, just as the sky is motionless, so too is Brahman motionless in the world.

nīrasā asadābhāsā jagatpratyayakāriṇaḥ| rūpālokamanaskārāḥ santīme brahmarūpiṇaḥ || 24 ||

These forms, perceptions, and mental impressions, which are tasteless and appear as unreal, cause the notion of the world and are of the nature of Brahman.

ūrmiśabdārtharahitaṃ yādṛgambu bahūnyapi| sargaśabdārtharahitaṃ tādṛgbrahma nisargavat || 25 ||

Just as water, devoid of the meaning of the word 'wave,' remains the same despite many waves, so too is Brahman devoid of the meaning of the word 'creation.'

sarga eva paraṃ brahma paraṃ brahmaiva sargadṛk | sargaśabdārtharahito vākyārthastveṣa śāśvataḥ || 26 ||

Creation itself is the supreme Brahman, and the supreme Brahman is the witness of creation. The meaning of the word 'creation' is devoid of meaning; this eternal meaning of the sentence is.

brahmaśabdārthasaṃpattau sargaśabdārthadhīḥ kṛtā | sargaśabdārthasaṃsiddhau brahmaśabdārthadhīḥ kṛtā || 27 ||

When the meaning of the word 'Brahman' is realized, the understanding of the word 'creation' is made. When the meaning of the word 'creation' is established, the understanding of the word 'Brahman' is made.

samastśabdaśabdārthabhāvanābhāvanodayam | śuddhaṃ tiṣṭhati cidvyoma brahmaśabdena kathyate || 28 ||

The rise of the contemplation and non-contemplation of the meaning of all words and their meanings, the pure consciousness, the sky of consciousness, is described by the word 'Brahman'.

samyagdarśanasansiddhāvubhayorapyavedane | yacchiṣṭamajaraṃ śāntaṃ tato vāgvinivartate || 29 ||

In the realization of correct vision, when both are known, that which remains, eternal and peaceful, from that speech returns.

saṃśāntasarvātmakavedanaughamastīdamekātmakasvasvarūpam | yathāsthitaṃ sarvajagatsvarūpaṃ pāṣāṇarūpaṃ ca paraṃ jñarūpam || 30 ||

This peaceful, all-encompassing knowledge is the essence of the self. As it is, the nature of the entire universe is like a stone, and it is the supreme knowledge.
