Sri Vasishtha said: In this stretch of the forest that is the world, standing on the slope of the mountain of consciousness, what is this creeper called the ignorance behind creation, and when did it come into bloom?
Its stem has joints as big as great mountains, and it is wrapped in bark that is the shell of the cosmic egg. The three worlds are the very stalk of its body, visible to everyone.
sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo bhāvo jñānamajñānameva ca | atra etānyuruvṛttāni mūlāni ca phalāni ca || 3 ||
Pleasure and pain, becoming and being, knowledge and ignorance - all these are spread everywhere on this creeper; they are its roots, and they are its fruits.
sukhādavidyodetyuccaiḥstadevānte prayacchati | duḥkhādavidyodetyuccaiḥstadevaiṣā phalaty alam || 4 ||
From pleasure, ignorance rises up high, and in the end this same ignorance gives back that very pleasure. From pain, ignorance rises up high in just the same way, and this creeper yields that same pain as its fruit.
From becoming, this ignorance arises, and it clearly bears that same becoming as its fruit. From being, it gains existence, and in a moment it yields that same being as its fruit.
From ignorance it grows, and that same ignorance clearly becomes its fruit. Through knowledge, understanding arises, and in the end it gives back that same understanding.
Coming again and again, it sometimes falls upon the elephant of discernment; it is shaken off, its pollen scattered, and yet it returns once more to clinging.
The joints of its stem, where new life is born, are hollow all through. Its budding tips are restless openings where decay pours in. It is filled to overflowing with the sap of enjoyment, and it is eaten away only by the single woodworm of inquiry.
Its flowers are the round moon and sun, blooming everyday all around; its flowers are also the planets, trembling like blossoms in the wind of the sky.
The pollen of its flowers glows with the light of the moon, the sun, and fire; and because of this, this fair-bodied one draws the mind, just as a woman does.
It is shaken by the elephant that is the mind. It holds a cuckoo that is sweet-voiced intention. It is crowded with the snakes that are the senses. And it is dyed by the bark of craving.
By climbing the blue sky as if it were a dark tamala tree, it has grown very tall. Propped firmly on the knees of heaven and earth, it adorns the garden of the whole universe.
In the lower reaches of the universe she has been given her own watering basin, and into it has been poured the water of every ocean, and milk, and more besides.
The three Vedas are the restless bees that hover around her, beautiful women are the clusters of flowers on her, the stirring of consciousness is the wind that shakes her, and countless rituals are the ants that crawl over her.
Pythons of evil deeds coil through her, the splendour of heaven is the flowering bower she wears, she runs on unbroken through the whole life of every living thing, and she gives every kind of delight and every kind of intoxication.
She shines with flowers of every colour in every kind of stillness, she is covered with strings of every kind of fruit, and she blossoms through every kind of year.
She is ringed with watering basins of every kind, she holds birds of every kind, she is rough with pollen of every kind, and she is netted over with mountains of every kind.
She buds with every kind of art, she rises up out of every kind of forest, she climbs every kind of mountain slope, and she is thick with every kind of leaf.
jātā ca jāyamānā ca mriyamāṇā tathā mṛtā | ardhacchinnā tathā'cchinnā nityamacchedinī tathā || 23 ||
She is born, and she is being born, she is dying, and she is already dead. She is cut halfway through, and she is uncut too, and she is always the one no cut can touch.
sphīte'ntargalitā tasya ajñe'ntaḥ saṃsthitānvitā | ito jalamitaḥ śailā ito nāgāḥ surā itaḥ || 26 ||
She has melted into that vastness, and she stays fixed within the unknown. From her comes water on this side, mountains on that side, serpents on this side, gods on that side.
Here she is darkness, here she is light, here she is space, here she is fertile land. Here she is scripture, here she is the Vedas, and here she is beyond both.
Somewhere she is Vishnu, somewhere Brahma, somewhere Rudra, somewhere the sun. Somewhere she is fire, somewhere wind, somewhere the moon, somewhere Yama.
Whatever there is in the worlds, dear one, whether it fills them with great glory or has shrunk down to a scrap of withered grass, this whole visible world shining before us, Hara and the other gods included, know it to be ignorance, headed for destruction. Only by rising above it does one gain the true self.
