16.58.1

arjuna uvāca | naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtirlabdhā tvatprasādānmayācyuta | sthito'smi gatasaṃdehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava || 1 ||

Arjuna said: My delusion is destroyed, and I have regained my memory through Your grace, O Achyuta. I stand here with all my doubts dispelled. I will act according to Your word.

śrībhagavānuvāca | vṛttayo yadi bodhena saṃśāntā hṛdaye sphuṭam | taccittaṃ śāntamevāntarviddhi sattvamupāgatam || 2 ||

The Supreme Lord said: If the mental modifications are completely pacified by knowledge in the heart, then know that the mind has attained tranquility and is endowed with the quality of sattva.

atra taccetyarahitaṃ pratyakcetananāmakam | yattvaśeṣavinirmuktaṃ yatsarvaṃ sarvataśca yat || 3 ||

Here, that which is devoid of the concept of 'this' and 'that' is called the inner consciousness. It is free from all limitations and is all-pervading.

na kecana vidantyete tatpadaṃ jāgatādayaḥ | bhūtalādgaganoḍḍīnaṃ vihaṃgamamivonnatam || 4 ||

None of the worldly beings know that state, which is elevated like a bird flying high in the sky from the earth.

pratyakcetanamābhāsaṃ śuddhaṃ saṃkalpavarjitam | agamyamenamātmānaṃ viddhi dūraṃ dṛśāmiva || 5 ||

Know that inner consciousness, which is pure, free from desires, and unreachable, as distant like the sight of the eyes.

sarvātītaṃ yadatyacchaṃ vinā śuddhaṃ svavāsanā | na śaknoti padaṃ draṣṭuṃ janadṛṣṭiraṇūniva || 6 ||

That which transcends everything cannot be seen without pure self-impressions, just as the vision of people cannot see it.

yatprāptau sarva evaime kṣīṇā ghaṭapaṭādayaḥ | varākī vāsanā tatra kiṃ karotu pare pade || 7 ||

When that state is attained, all these disputes and doubts are destroyed. What can the desires of the senses do there in the supreme state?

yathānalagiriṃ prāpya himaleśo vilīyate | śuddhamāsādya cittatattvamavidyā līyate tathā || 8 ||

Just as snow melts upon reaching a mountain of fire, so does ignorance dissolve upon attaining the pure essence of consciousness.

kva varākī rajastucchā vāsanā bhogabandhanam | kva pūritajagajjālaścittatattvavipulānilaḥ || 9 ||

Where are the insignificant desires of the senses that bind through enjoyment? Where is the vast wind of the pure essence of consciousness that pervades the entire universe?

tāvatsphuratyavidyeyaṃ nānākāravikāriṇī | yāvanna saṃparijñātaḥ śuddhaḥ svātmāyamātmanā || 10 ||

Until the pure self is fully realized by oneself, this ignorance continues to manifest in various forms.

sarvā dṛśyadṛśaḥ kṣīṇāḥ svacchatāivoditā tathā | nabhasīva pade tasmin svātmanyakhilapūraṇe || 11 ||

All perceptions and perceivers are exhausted, and only pure clarity remains in that state of complete fulfillment of the self.

samagrākārarūpaṃ tat samagrākāravarjitam | vāgatītaṃ paraṃ vastu kena nāmopamīyate || 12 ||

That which has the form of the whole and yet is devoid of the whole form, which is beyond words and is the supreme reality, how can it be compared to anything?

viṣayaviṣaviṣūcikāmatastvaṃ nipuṇamahaṃsthitivāsanāmapāsya | abhimataparihāramantrayuktyā bhava vibhavo bhagavānbhiyāmabhūmiḥ || 13 ||

O you who are like the scorpion of worldly desires, abandon the subtle ego-centric tendencies. By the mantra of renunciation, become the wealth of the divine, the fearless ground.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti gaditavati trilokanāthe kṣaṇamiva maunamupasthite purastāt | atha madhupa ivā'sitābjakhaṇḍe vacanamupaiṣyati tatra pāṇḍuputraḥ || 14 ||

Vasishtha said: Having spoken thus, the lord of the three worlds remained silent for a moment. Then, like a bee on a blue lotus petal, Arjuna spoke there.

arjuna uvāca | parigalitasmastśokabhārā paramudayaṃ bhagavanmatirgateyam | mama tava vacanena lokabharturdinapatinā paribodhitābjinīva || 15 ||

Arjuna said: O Lord, my mind has attained supreme bliss, and all my sorrows have melted away. By your words, the supporter of the world, the sun, has enlightened me like a blooming lotus.

ityuktvotthāya gāṇḍīvadhanvā sa harisārathiḥ | arjuno gatasaṃdeho raṇalīlāṃ kariṣyati || 16 ||

Having said this, Arjuna, the wielder of the Gandiva bow, rose up with his charioteer Hari (Krishna), free from doubt, and will perform the sport of battle.

kariṣyati kṣatagajavājisārathidrutakṣaradrudhiramahānadīṃ bhuvam | śarotkaraprasaramahārajaḥsthalītirohitadyumaṇivilocanāṃ divam || 17 ||

He will create a great river of blood flowing from the wounded elephants, horses, charioteers, and swift arrows, covering the earth. The sky will be adorned with the brilliance of weapons, resembling the sun's rays obscuring the firmament.
