16.57.1

śrībhagavānuvācaidaṃ viddhi mahāścaryamarjuneha hi yatkilapūrvaṃ saṃjāyate citraṃ paścādbhittirudeti hi || 1 ||

The Supreme Lord said: Know this to be a great wonder, O Arjuna, that something extraordinary arises first, and then a wall rises afterward.

abhittāvutthite citre dṛśyate bhittirātatāaho vicitrā māyeyaṃ magnaṃ tumbaṃ śilā plutā || 2 ||

When the extraordinary arises without the wall, the wall is seen as extended. Oh, this magical illusion is wonderful, the gourd is submerged, the stone is floating.

cittasthacitrasadṛśe vyomātmani jagattrayevyomātmanaste kimiyamahantāvyomatoditā || 3 ||

In the self, which is like a picture in the mind, the three worlds are like the self. What is this greatness that arises from the self?

sarvaṃ vyomakṛtaṃ vyomnā vyomni vyoma vilīyatebhujyate vyomani vyoma vyoma vyomani cātatam || 4 ||

Everything is created by the sky, in the sky, the sky dissolves, the sky is enjoyed in the sky, the sky is the sky in the sky.

veṣṭitaṃ vāsanārajjvā dīrghasaṃsṛti dāmavatvāsanodveṣṭanenaiva tadihodveṣṭyate'rjuna || 5 ||

Bound by the rope of desires, like a long-lasting bond, by the hatred of desires, it is hated here, O Arjuna.

pratibimbaṃ yathādarśe tathedaṃ brahmaṇi svayam | agamyaṃ chedabhedāderādhārānanyatāvaśāt || 6 ||

Just as a reflection in a mirror, so is this in Brahman itself | It is inaccessible due to the indivisibility of the substratum

ananyacchedabhedādi brahmaṇi brahmaṇāmbaram | kiṃ kathaṃ kasya kenaiva cchidyate vā kva bhidyate || 7 ||

The indivisible and non-different Brahman is the garment of Brahman | How, by whom, and where is it divided or differentiated?

Therefore, here, the absence of desires is indeed attained through knowledge | One who is not free from desires, even if devoted to all duties, is certainly not free

sarvajño’pyatibaddhātmā pañjarastho yathā hariḥ | yasyāsti vāsanābījamatyalpaṃ citibhūmigam || 9 ||

Even the omniscient one, whose self is greatly bound, is like a bird in a cage | One who has even a small seed of desire reaches the realm of consciousness

bṛhatsaṃjāyate tasya punaḥ saṃsṛtikānanam | abhyāsāddhṛdi rūḍhena satyasaṃbodhavahninā | nirdagdhaṃ vāsanābījaṃ na bhūyaḥ parirohati || 10 ||

For him, the vast forest of transmigration arises again | By the fire of true awakening, firmly established in the heart through practice, the seed of desire is burned and does not sprout again

dagdhaṃ tu vāsanābījaṃ na nimajjati vastuṣu | sukhaduḥkhādiṣu svacchaṃ padmapatramivāmbhasi || 11 ||

The seed of desire, once burnt, does not immerse itself in objects, remaining pure like a lotus leaf in water amidst pleasure and pain.

śāntātmā vigatabhayojjhitāmitāśo nirvāṇo galitamahāmanovimohaḥ | samyaktvaṃ śrutamavagamya pāvanaṃ tattiṣṭhātmanyapahatirekaśāntirūpaḥ || 12 ||

One who is peaceful, free from fear, devoid of desires, and liberated from the great delusion of the mind, having understood the true nature of the self, abides in the pure form of single peace.
