16.47.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | cittattvasya phalasyeva cittaḥ svāpāparakramāt | svasattāsaṃniveśena yaḥ sa sarga iti sthitaḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Consciousness is real the way a fruit is real. It does not come into being step by step, the way sleep changes into some further state. Whatever stands here stands only because consciousness has arranged its own being within itself. That is what we call creation.

deśakālakriyādīnāmapi tanmayarūpataḥ | idamanyadidaṃ cānyaditi nātropapadyate || 2 ||

Even place, time and action, and everything else like them, are made of that same consciousness. So no one can rightly say, this is one thing and this is another.

samastśabdaśabdārthavāsanākalanāvidaḥ | ekātmatvādasaccetamiti saṃkathyate katham || 3 ||

For one who understands how every word carries its meaning, all this is one single self. So how can anyone say this world is unreal?

phalasyāntaḥsaṃniveśo nāmānukramato yathā | cittaḥ svasattāghanatā'nānā nānā sthitā tathā || 4 ||

Just as a fruit has its own parts arranged inside it, each in its own place, the solid mass that is consciousness's own being is really one, yet it stands as many things.

anānaivāpi nānaivā kṣubdhevākṣubhitaiva ca | yathā phalāntaḥ svāsattā cidantaḥ siddhayas tathā || 5 ||

It is not many, yet it appears as many. It is as if stirred, yet it is never really stirred. Just as a fruit's own being stays inside the fruit, the things that appear inside consciousness stay inside consciousness in the same way.

jagannagaramādarśe cittaḥ svaṃ pratibimbamitaṃ | kacatīvā'kacadapi śilāntaḥsaṃniveśavat || 6 ||

The world is a city seen reflected in the mirror of consciousness. It seems to shine, though nothing there truly shines, the way a picture seems to appear inside a stone.

parame cinmaṇau santi jagatkoṭiśatānyapi | cintāmaṇāvanantāni phalānīvārpitānyalam || 7 ||

In the highest gem, which is consciousness, there are hundreds of millions of worlds, held inside it completely, the way countless fruits are held inside a jewel that grants every wish.

citsamudgaka evedaṃ tadaṅgotkīrṇamātatam | jagannmauktikamābhāti tadaṃśamayamanyavat || 8 ||

This is nothing but the jewel box of consciousness, its surface carved all over and spread out wide. Inside it shines the pearl called the world, made of a mere part of that box, yet it looks like something separate.

ahorātraṃ vikarayanvedanāvedanānyalam | cidādityaḥ sthito bhāsvāñjagaddravyāṇi darśayan || 9 ||

Making day and night, giving rise to every kind of feeling and every kind of not-feeling, the sun of consciousness stands there shining, showing all the things of the world.

samudrakoṭarāvartapayaḥspandavilāsavat | anānaiva ca nānā ciścilāntaḥsaṃniveśavat || 10 ||

It is like the play of pulsing water in the hollows and whirlpools of the ocean. It is one thing, yet it stands as many, the way a pattern stands inside the stone of consciousness.

yadasti tacciti śilāśarīre śālabhañjikā yannāsti tacciti śilāśarīre śālabhañjikā || 11 ||

Whatever exists is, inside consciousness, a figure carved in the body of a stone. Whatever does not exist is also, inside consciousness, a figure carved in the body of a stone.

bhāvābhāveṣu yatsatyaṃ cinmajjākalpameva tat majjāsārā padārthashrīstanmayaṃ syāttadeva hi || 12 ||

Whatever is real amid existing and not existing is like the very core of consciousness. And the glory of any thing, whose heart is that core, is made of that core alone.

padmanānādiśabdārthastyaktvā yadvacchilodaram nānā tadvadidaṃ nānā tadetanmayamadvayam || 13 ||

Set aside the meanings of words like lotus and the rest, and what stays inside a stone is only stone. In the same way, set aside the many names of this world, and it is made of this one thing alone, without a second.

nānāpyekatayā'nānā padmabimbaṃ śilodaram yathā tadavibhāgātma tathaidam ciddhanāntaram || 14 ||

Though they look like many things, by being one they are not really many. The carved lotus and the inside of the stone are, in their nature, undivided. In the same way, this inner mass of consciousness is undivided.

yathā'malapayaḥkośaḥ sthaladhiyāṃ tu bhānubhāḥ sannivāsanivaiavaṃ cinnaitvaṃ sadasadvapuḥ || 15 ||

Just as sunlight, over what is really solid ground, looks to those watching like a sheet of clear water that seems to be there though it is not, in the same way you, who are consciousness itself, are not a body made of existing or not existing.

yathā samyak payorāśiḥ koṭare kalanonmukham | dravatvātspandate'spandaṃ tathedaṃ ciddhanāntaram || 16 ||

Just as a full body of water lying in a hollow seems to stir, because it is liquid, though nothing in it truly moves, in the same way is this inner mass of consciousness.

cicchilāśaṅkhapadmaughastanmayatve'pyatanmayaḥ | jagadviddhi sapadmādipadārthaṃ cicchilāntaram || 17 ||

The many conches and lotuses carved on the stone of consciousness are made of that very stone, yet they look like something else. Know that the world too, with its lotuses and every other thing in it, is nothing but the substance of that stone of consciousness.

mahāśilāghano'pyeṣa ciddhanasthaṃ śilodaram | arandhronirdvayo'ccho'jaḥ saṃśāntaḥsaṃniveśavat || 18 ||

This, though it looks like a great solid mass of stone, is only the inside of that stone resting within the mass of consciousness, without a crack, without a second thing, clear, never born, completely at peace within itself.

tapatīdaṃ jagadbrahma śaratkāla ivāmalam | sphuratīdaṃ jagadbrahma saumyaḥ soma iva drutaḥ || 19 ||

This world, which is Brahman, shines pure and bright, like the clear sky of autumn. This world, which is Brahman, shimmers soft and flowing, like the gentle moon.

brahmaṇīdaṃ suṣuptābhaṃ nāstyānāśaṃ śilābjavat | brahmatvaṃ brahmaṇi yathā tathaivedaṃ jagatsthitam || 20 ||

In Brahman, this world is like a deep sleep - it does not last forever, the way a lotus carved in stone does. Even so, this world exists within Brahman exactly the way Brahman's own nature exists within Brahman.

nānayorvidyate medastarupādapayoriva | yānīmāni jagantīha nānyattāni cidākṛteḥ || 21 ||

Between these two there is no difference, just as there is no difference between two names for a tree. Whatever these worlds are, here, they are nothing but the shape of consciousness.

bhāvābhāvādi nāstyēṣāṃ tasyā iva kadācana | brahmaiva jagadābhāsaṃ marutāpo yathā jalam || 22 ||

These worlds are never touched by being or non-being, or anything like that - no more than that consciousness is. Brahman alone appears as the world, the way desert heat appears as water.

brahmaiva lōkanācchuddhaṃ bhavatyambu yathātapaḥ | mervādēstṛṇagulmādēścittādērjagatō'pi ca || 23 ||

Brahman alone becomes clear through being seen, the way water becomes clear in sunlight - true of Meru and the rest, of grass and bushes and the rest, of the mind and the rest, and of the world too.

paramāmbuvibhāgēna yadrūpaṃ tatparaṃ viduḥ | tatsamūhastadēvōccaiścittaṃ mērutṛṇādikam || 24 ||

Whatever shape comes from a portion of that highest water, the wise know as the Highest itself. That same whole is truly called mind - appearing as Meru, as grass, and as everything else.

yatsaukṣmyē'pi hi sārātma sthaulyē sārataraṃ hi tat | yathā rasātmikā śaktiḥ paramāṇutayā'nagha || 25 ||

Whatever has the nature of essence even in its finest, smallest state has that same essence even more fully in its largest, grossest state - just as the essence that is sap, O sinless one, shows itself even in its smallest, atomic form.

sthitā jagatpadārtheṣu pāyasī brahmatā tathā | rasaśaktiryathā nānātṛṇagulmalatāmbhasām || 26 ||

Brahman's nature, like milk, is present in every thing of this world - just as the power of sap is present in all the different grasses, shrubs, vines, and waters.

tathā nānātayodeti saivāsaiveva brahmatā | yaiṣā rūpavilāsānāmālokaparamāṇutā || 27 ||

In this same way, Brahman's nature rises up as many things - it is itself, and yet not itself. This is the finest, smallest point of light within the play of forms.

guṇaguṇyarthasattātmarūpiṇyāsāṃ parātmatā | citi citte'sti mervādi tadabhivyañjanātmani || 28 ||

These many forms show themselves as a quality and the thing that carries the quality, but their highest, true nature is consciousness itself. Meru and the rest exist in the mind - the mind that gives that consciousness its expression.

picchapakṣaughakāṭhinyaṃ mayūrāṇḍarase yathā | citi tattve'sti nānātā tadabhivyañjanātmani || 29 ||

Just as the hardness of feathers and wings is present in the fluid inside a peacock's egg, diversity is present in the reality of consciousness in the very same way - present only in what gives it expression.

vicitrapicchikāpuñjo mayūrāṇḍarase yathā | yathā nānātmike hyeva barhyaṇḍarasabarhite || 30 ||

Just as the many-colored bundle of feathers exists in the fluid of a peacock's egg, so too, in that same fluid, the many-natured peacock itself already exists.

vivekadṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭe te tathā brahma jagatsthitam | sanānāto'pyanānāto yathā'ṇḍarasabarhiṇaḥ || 31 ||

When these two are seen with the eye that tells things apart, Brahman and the world stand just so - many, and yet not many, the way the egg's fluid and the peacock are.

advaitadvaitasattātmā tathā brahmajagadbhramaḥ | yathā sadasatoḥ sattā samatāyāmavasthitiḥ || 32 ||

The apparent difference between Brahman and the world is, in its very being, both one thing and two - just as being itself, whether of what is real or what is not real, comes to rest in sameness.

yataḥ sadasato rūpaṃ bhāvasthaṃ viddhi taṃ param | nānā'nānātmakamidaṃ tv anubhūtaṃ nasaṃbhavam || 33 ||

Know this as the Supreme: the one place where the forms of the real and the unreal come to rest. It is both many and not many, yet it is something we actually experience, not something that was ever born.

cijjagadvālaṇaṃ paśya barhyaṇḍe rasabarhiṇam | yathā jagati cittattvaṃ cittattve yajjagattathā | nānā'nānātmakaikaṃ ca mayūrāṇḍaraso yathā || 34 ||

See how consciousness turns into the world, the way a peacock lies within the fluid of its egg. Just as the reality of consciousness is present in the world, so the world is present in the reality of consciousness - one single thing, both many and not many, like the fluid inside a peacock's egg.

nānāpadārthabhramapicchāpūrṇā jagatmayūrāṇḍarasaścidādyā | mayūrarūpaṃ tvamayūramantaḥ sattāpadaṃ viddhi kuto'sti bhedaḥ || 35 ||

This world is like the fluid inside a peacock's egg, full of feathers that are the illusion of many separate things, and its source is consciousness. The shape of a peacock is there, yet inside it there is no peacock yet - know this simply as the state of pure being. So how could there be any real difference?
