16.46.1

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavansarvasārajña tvayaishā bilvarūpiṇī | mahāciddhanasatteha kathiteti matirmama || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, you who know the essence of everything, I understand that you have just described this great dense reality of consciousness here in the form of a wood-apple.

cinmajjārūpamakhilamahantādīdamātatam | na manāgapi bhedo'sti dvaitaikyakalanātmakaḥ || 2 ||

All this, starting from the sense of 'I', extends as the very pulp of consciousness. There is not the slightest difference in it, none that could be counted as two-ness or one-ness.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathā brahmāṇḍakūśmāṇḍamajjāmervādisaṃsthitiḥ | tathā cidvilvamajjeyaṃ brahmāṇḍādijagatsthitiḥ || 3 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Just as, inside the pulp of that pumpkin which is itself like a cosmic egg, Mount Meru and everything else have their place, so inside this pulp of the wood-apple of consciousness, the cosmic egg and the whole world have their place.

sṛṣṭicidvilvamajjā syātsvādhārānyatvasaṃbhave | vināśaḥ sarvagasyāsya na caitatsaṃbhavyalam || 4 ||

Creation could be something other than this pulp of the wood-apple of consciousness only if it could become separate from its own ground. That would mean the destruction of this consciousness that pervades everything, and that simply cannot happen.

citeramarīcabījasya jagadākhyā camatkṛtiḥ | sthitā sauṣuptasauyāntaḥ śilāntaḥsanniveśavat || 5 ||

This wonder called the world is a tiny spark-seed of consciousness. It rests peacefully, as if in deep sleep, the way an arrangement rests inside a stone.

atremāminduvadana citrāṃ vismayakāriṇīm | varṇyamānāṃ mayā ramyāmanyāmākhyāyikāṃ śrṇu || 6 ||

Now listen, moon-faced one, to this other story, which I will tell, wondrous, astonishing and delightful.

snigdhā spaṣṭā mṛdusparśā mahāvistāraśālinī | niviḍā nityamakṣubdhā kvacidasti mahāśilā || 7 ||

Somewhere there is a great rock, smooth, clear, soft to the touch, vast in size, dense, and forever undisturbed.

tasyāmantaḥ praphullāni padmāni subahūnyapi | sarasyāmiva ramyāṇi tānyanantāni santi vai || 8 ||

Inside it there are countless fully-opened lotuses, delightful as if in a lake, endless in number.

anyonyaprotapatrāṇi mitho vighaṭitāni ca | mithaścopanigūḍhāni gūḍhāni prakaṭāni ca || 9 ||

Some have their petals threaded into one another, some are apart from one another. Some lie hidden close together, some are hidden, and some are plainly visible.

106.46.10

adhomukhānyūrdhvamukhānyapi tiryaṅmukhāni ca | mithomilitamūlāni mithaḥprotamukhānyapi || 10 ||

Some face downward, some face upward, and some face sideways. Some have their roots joined together, and some have their faces threaded into one another.

116.46.11

karṇikājālamūlāni mūlāntaḥkarṇikāni ca | ūrdhvamūlānyadhomūlānyamūlānītarāṇi ca || 11 ||

Some have a whole cluster of seed-pods at their roots, and some have the seed-pod inside the root itself. Some are rooted upward, some rooted downward, and others have no roots at all.

teṣāṃ ca nikṭe santi śaṅkhāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ | cakraughāśca mahākārāḥ padmavatsanniveśinaḥ || 12 ||

Near them are hundreds of thousands of conch shells, and great masses of discs, arranged just like the lotuses.

śrīrāma uvāca | satyametanmayā dṛṣṭā tādṛśī sā mahāśilā | śālagrāme harerdhāmni vidyate parivāriṇī || 13 ||

Sri Rama said: This is true, I have seen just such a great rock. At Shalagrama, the abode of Hari, there is one like that, complete with its whole array.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evametadvijānāsi dṛṣṭavānasi tāṃ śilām | yo yaśca tatra vai prāṇaḥ samastādṛganantaraḥ || 14 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Yes, you understand this correctly, you have indeed seen that rock. And whatever life there is in it, of every kind, is never separate from it.

mayā tviyamapūrvaiva śileha kathitā tava | yasyāmantarmahākukṣau sarvamasti ca nāsti ca || 15 ||

But I have told you here of a rock unlike any other, inside whose vast belly everything both exists and does not exist.

cicchilaiṣā mayoktā te yasyāmantarjaganti vai | ghanatvaikātmakatvādivaśādeṣā śilaiva cit || 16 ||

This is the rock of consciousness that I have told you of, inside which are all the worlds. Because it is dense and one single self, this very rock is consciousness itself.

apyatyantaghanāṅgāyāḥ sunīrandhrākṛterapi | vidyate'ntarjagadvṛndaṃ vyomnīva vipulānilaḥ || 17 ||

Even though its form is extremely dense, entirely without a single hole in it, the whole multitude of worlds exists inside it, like the vast wind existing inside the sky.

dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ | santi tasyāṃ śilāyāṃ ca suṣiraṃ na manāgapi || 18 ||

Heaven, earth, wind, space, mountains, rivers and the directions, all exist inside that rock, and yet there is not the slightest hollow in it.

asyāmeva ghanāṅgātma jagatpadmaṃ vijṛmbhate | etasmādvastuto nānyadanyaścchuddhātmakaṃ ca vā || 19 ||

Inside this very dense rock, the lotus of the world unfolds. In reality, nothing exists apart from it, there is no other separate thing with a nature of its own.

śaṅkhapadmādikaṃ lokaṃ pāṣāṇe likhyate yathā | bhūtaṃ bhavadbhaviṣyacca śilāyāṃ śālabhañjikā || 20 ||

The way a whole world of conches and lotuses can be carved on a stone, the past, the present and the future exist on that rock in just the same way, like a figure carved in stone.

tathāsti tatra tatsarvaṃ saṃsthānaṃ vastuto yathā | upalāntaḥ saṃniveśo nānātmāpyekapiṇḍatām || 21 ||

In that same way, everything there truly exists just as it looks. The pattern inside the stone seems like many different things, but it is really just one solid piece.

yathādatte tathaiṣā citpiṇḍākāraikikāṃ ghanām | yathā padmaḥ śilākośādabhinnastadvapurmayaḥ || 22 ||

Just as the stone takes on that shape, so this consciousness takes on one dense, single form; and just as the lotus is not different from the stone's own substance, but is made of that same stuff.

tathā sargaścito rūpādabhinnopi vapurmayaḥ | suṣuptāvasthayā cakrapadmalekhāḥ śilodare || 23 ||

In the same way, creation, though not different from the form of consciousness, is made of that same substance — like the lines of a wheel or a lotus lying asleep inside a stone.

yathā sthitāściterantastatheyaṃ jagadāvalī | śilāntaḥ padmalekhālī maricāntaścamatkṛtiḥ || 24 ||

As these stand within consciousness, so does this whole row of worlds — like a row of lotus lines inside a stone, like a marvel hidden inside a peppercorn.

nodayeti nāstamāyāti yathā sargastathā citau | yathā purandhryāṃ martyo'ntarmajjā vā bilvagā yathā || 25 ||

Creation does not rise and does not set, and neither does it in consciousness, like a child lying hidden inside its mother, or like a seed hidden inside a bilva fruit.

tathā'nantavikārāḍhyā citau brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalī | vikārādi tadeveti mudhaivoktiranarthikā || 26 ||

In that way, the whole array of universes, full of endless changes, exists within consciousness. To say that this change is something separate is an empty statement, without any real meaning.

tattāṃ samupayātyāśu jalabindurivāmbhasi | anantatvācciteretadvikārādi citeriti || 27 ||

It quickly merges into that oneness, like a drop of water into water. Because consciousness is without limit, this change and all the rest belong to consciousness alone.

uktyā saṃpadyate yacca tallayena vilīyate | brahmaivedaṃ vikārādi vikārādyarthavarjitam || 28 ||

And whatever comes into being only through being spoken of, dissolves away when that dissolution comes. This whole show of change is Brahman alone, and it holds nothing of the reality of change.

varjanāvarjane'rthasya brahmaivānantatāvaśāt | brahma sthitaṃ vikārādi brahmaivotpāditaṃ kramāt || 29 ||

Whether we deny this thing or accept it, it is Brahman alone, because Brahman has no limit. Change and all the rest stand as Brahman; it is Brahman itself that has come forth, step by step.

atrānyārthamidaṃ viddhi mṛgatṛṣṇāmbhasā samam | bījaṃ puṣpaphalāntasthaṃ bījāntarnānyadātmakam || 30 ||

Know that, taken as something separate, this world is just like the water of a mirage. The seed that lies inside the flower and the fruit is not, within the seed, made of anything else.

yādṛśī bījasattā sā bhavantī yātyathottaram | ciddhane ciddhanatvaṃ yatsa eva trijagatkramḥ || 31 ||

Whatever the seed's own being is, that same being, unfolding, moves further onward. In the dense mass of consciousness, what is the very thickness of consciousness, that alone is the unfolding of the three worlds.

ekatvametayordvitvamekābhāve dvayoḥ kṣatiḥ | jagadanyabhavodbhūtirna kadācittadīdṛśam || 32 ||

These two are really one; to call them two, if either one were missing, both would be lost. The world coming to be as something separate never happens like that, not ever.

cidacinna kadācicca dvayamantarmitho'dvyam | mahāśilāntare bhedo lekhātmāsti yathā bahuḥ | tadanyānanyamajjādi ciddhane trijagattathā || 33 ||

Consciousness and matter are never truly two, even though they seem like two, deep within, they are not separate. Just as a single great rock seems to hold many different markings, so the three worlds lie hidden inside the dense mass of consciousness, seeming both different from it and not different, sunk within it.

rekhoparekhāvalitā yathaikā pīvarī śilā | tathā trailokyavalitaṃ brahmaikamiti dṛśyate || 34 ||

As one solid rock is covered with line upon line, so Brahman, wrapped in the three worlds, is seen as one.

etacchilāntarabījādi yathā nityaṃ suṣuptakam | nāstameti na codeti tathā'haṃtā jagadgatiḥ || 35 ||

As the lotus and the rest inside the stone lie forever asleep, neither setting nor rising, so the sense of I and the way of the world neither rise nor set.

yathā śilāntarlekhādi bhidyate na śilāntarāt tatsāratvājjagatkartṛ kartṛtvādijagaccitiḥ || 36 ||

As the markings inside a stone are never separate from the stone itself, so, because of that same inner substance, the doer of the world, its power to act, and the world itself are all consciousness.

yathā śilāntarabjānāṃ spandāspandabhavābhavaḥ viṣayatvaṃ na gacchanti kartāro jagatastathā || 37 ||

As the lotuses inside the stone, whether stirring or still, whether coming to be or not, never become outward things, so the doers of the world never become outward things either.

nedaṃ kadācitkriyate na kadācana naśyati adrivatprabhavollāsavilāsāvedanātmakam || 38 ||

This is never created, and it is never destroyed. Like a rock, its coming into being, its brightening, its play, are never really felt happening.

yathā yatra yadākāraṃ tathā tatra tadeva hi brahmasattātmakaṃ sarvaṃ suṣuptasthamiva sthitam || 39 ||

Wherever a shape appears, and whatever shape it is, that alone is truly there. Everything, being nothing but the existence of Brahman, remains as if lying in deep sleep.

bhūribhāvavikārāḍhyo yo'yaṃ jagadurubhramaḥ suṣuptameva tadviddhi śilāntaḥ paṅkajādivat || 40 ||

This vast illusion of the world, full of so many states and changes, know it to be nothing but a deep sleep, like the lotus and the rest lying inside a stone.

nityaṃ suṣuptapadameva jagadvilāsaḥ samyakpraśāntasamaciddhanakhātmakatvāt | padmāḥ śilāntariva sargadaśāstvasārā dṛṣṭā na dehamupayānti kadācideva || 41 ||

The world's whole play is forever nothing but a state of deep sleep, because in truth it is the calm, even, dense mass of consciousness, like open space. As lotuses stay inside a stone, the states of creation have no real substance, seen, yet they never truly take on a body, not ever.
