16.38.1

īśvara uvāca | eṣa devaḥ sa paramaḥ pūjya eṣa sadā satām | cinmātramanubhūtyātmā sarvagaḥ sarvasaṃśrayaḥ || 1 ||

Ishvara said: This is the god, the supreme one, worthy of worship; the good always worship him. His nature is pure consciousness and direct experience; he is present everywhere, the refuge of everything.

ghaṭe paṭe vaṭe kuḍye śakaṭe vānare sthitaḥ | śivo haro harirbrahmā śakro vaiśravaṇo yamaḥ || 2 ||

He dwells in a pot, in cloth, in a banyan tree, in a wall, in a cart, in a monkey. He is Shiva, Hara, Hari, Brahma, Shakra, Vaishravana, and Yama.

bahirantaśca sarvātmā sadā svātmā subuddhibhiḥ | vividhena krameneva bhagavānparipūjyate || 3 ||

He is outside and inside, the self of everything, always one's own true self. Wise people worship this Lord in many different ways.

bahistāvanmahābuddhe kramena paripūjyate | yena tacchṛṇu tattvajña śroṣyasyantḥkramam tataḥ || 4 ||

First, O wise one, listen to how he is worshipped outwardly, step by step. O knower of truth, after that you will hear the inward way of worship.

pūjākrameṣu sarveṣu dehagehaṃ pavitrakam | tyājyaṃ dehāvabodhātma paraṃ yatnātpavitrakam || 5 ||

In every kind of worship, people use the purity of the body and the house. But that should be given up. The self that has gone beyond body-consciousness reaches, through effort, the higher, the truly pure.

pūjanam dhyānam evāntarnānyad asty asya pūjanam | tasmāt tribhuvanādhāram nityam dhyānena pūjayet || 6 ||

The only true worship is meditation, done within; there is no other way to worship him. So one should always worship, through meditation, the one who supports the three worlds.

cidrūpam sūryalakṣābham samastābhāsabhāsanam | antasthacitprakāśam svamahamtāsāram āśrayet || 7 ||

He is pure consciousness, shining like a hundred thousand suns, the light that makes everything else shine. One should take refuge in this inner light of consciousness, the very essence of one's own sense of 'I'.

86.38.8

apāraparamākāśavipulābhogakandharam | anantādhasthanākāśakośapādasaroruham || 8 ||

His neck is the vast, boundless highest sky; his lotus feet rest in the endless sky below.

96.38.9

anantadiktatābhogabhujamaṇḍalamaṇḍitam | nānāvidhamahālogagṛhītaparamāyudham || 9 ||

He is adorned with a circle of arms that reach to the edges of the endless directions, holding supreme weapons taken from the many great worlds.

106.38.10

hṛtkosakoṇaviśrāntabrahmaṇḍaughaparamparam | prakāśaparamākāśapāragāpāravigraham || 10 ||

In a corner of his heart rest, one after another, countless multitudes of universes. His form is boundless, going beyond even the highest sky of light.

adha ūrdhvaṃ caturdikṣu vidikṣu ca nirantaram brahmendraharirudreśapramukhāmaramaṇḍitam || 11 ||

Below, above, in the four directions and the directions between, without a gap, he is surrounded by gods headed by Brahma, Indra, Hari, Rudra, and Isha.

imāṃ bhūtaśriyaṃ tasya romāliṃ pravicintayetvividhārambhakāriṇyastrijagadyantrarajjavaḥ || 12 ||

One should meditate on this: his row of body-hairs, the splendor of all created beings, which are the ropes working the machine of the three worlds, setting all its various activities going.

icchādyāḥ śaktayastasya cintanīyāḥ śarīragāḥeṣa devaḥ sa paramaḥ pūjya eṣa sadā satām || 13 ||

One should meditate on his powers, beginning with will, that dwell in his body. This is the god, the supreme one, worthy of worship; the good always worship him.

cinmātramanubhūtyātmā sarvagaḥ sarvasaṃśrayaḥghaṭe paṭe vaṭe kuḍye śakaṭe vānare sthitaḥ || 14 ||

His nature is pure consciousness and direct experience; he is present everywhere, the refuge of everything. He dwells in a pot, in cloth, in a banyan tree, in a wall, in a cart, in a monkey.

śivo haro harirbrahmā śakro vaiśravaṇo yamaḥanantaikapadādhārasattāmātraikavigrahaḥ || 15 ||

He is Shiva, Hara, Hari, Brahma, Shakra, Vaishravana, and Yama. His only form is pure existence itself, the one support of that single, endless state.

vivartitajagajjālaḥ kālo'sya dvārapālakaḥ | saśailabhuvanābhogamidaṃ brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalam || 16 ||

By him the web of the world is unfolded; Time is his gatekeeper. This is the sphere of the universe together with its mountains and the vast expanse of worlds.

dehakoṇo'sya kasmiṃścitsvāṅgāvayavatāṃ gatam | vicintayenmahādevaṃ sahasraśravaṇekṣaṇam || 17 ||

A corner of its body, in some place, has become one of his own limbs. One should meditate on this great god, who has a thousand ears and a thousand eyes.

sahasraśirasaṃ śāntaṃ sahasrabhujabhūṣaṇam | sarvatrekṣaṇaśaktyāḍhyaṃ sarvato ghrāṇaśaktikam || 18 ||

He has a thousand heads and is at peace; he is adorned with a thousand arms. He has the power to see in every direction, and the power to smell in every direction.

sarvataḥ sparśanamayaṃ sarvato rasanānvitam | sarvatra śravaṇākīrṇaṃ sarvatra mananānvitam || 19 ||

He feels touch on every side, and he tastes on every side; he hears on every side, and he thinks on every side.

sarvato mananātītaṃ sarvataḥ paramaṃ śivam | sarvadā sarvakartāraṃ sarvasaṃkalpitārthadam || 20 ||

He is beyond thought on every side, and he is the highest good on every side; he always does everything, and he gives whatever anyone wishes for.

sarvabhūtāntarāvasthaṃ sarvaṃ sarvaikasādhanam iti saṃcintya deveśamarcayedvidhivattataḥ || 21 ||

He lives inside every being; he is everything, and he alone is the means to everything. Thinking of the lord of the gods in this way, one should then worship him according to the rule.

vidhānamarcasyedaṃ śrṇu brahmavidāṃ vara svasaṃvidātmā devo'yaṃ nopahāreṇa pūjyate || 22 ||

Listen now, best of those who know Brahman, to this rule of worship. This god, whose very self is his own awareness, is not worshipped by any offering.

na dīpena na dhūpena na puṣpavibhavārpaṇaiḥ nānnadānādidānena na candanavilepanaiḥ || 23 ||

Not by a lamp, not by incense, not by lavish offerings of flowers; not by giving food and other gifts, not by smearing on sandal paste.

na ca kuṅkumakarpūrabhogaiścitraiḥ na cetaraiḥ nityamakleśalabhyena śītalenā'vināśinā || 24 ||

Not by offerings of saffron and camphor either, special or ordinary; he is worshipped only by what is always gained without hardship, what is cool, and what never dies.

ekenaivā'mṛtenaiṣa bodhena svena pūjyate etadeva paraṃ dhyānaṃ pūjaiṣaiva parā smṛtā || 25 ||

This god is worshipped by one thing alone: the undying nectar that is his own awareness. This alone is the highest meditation, and this alone is remembered as the highest worship.

266.38.26

yadanāratamantasthaśuddhacinmātravedanam | paśyañśṛṇvanspṛśañjighrannannagacchan svapañśvasan || 26 ||

This is the ceaseless inner experience of pure awareness alone, present while a person sees, hears, touches, smells, eats, walks, sleeps, and breathes,

pralapanvisṛjan gṛhṇan śuddhasaṃvinmayo bhavet | dhyānāmṛtena saṃpūjya svayamātmānamīśvaram || 27 ||

while he speaks, excretes, and holds things, let him become one with pure awareness. Worshipping his own self, the lord, all by himself, with the nectar of meditation,

paramāsvādayuktena muktena kusumehitaiḥ | dhyānopahāra evātmā dhyānaṃ hyasy samīhitam || 28 ||

joined with the highest delight, set free, and with the flowers he longs for, this offering of meditation is the self itself; meditation truly is what he longs for.

dhyānamarghyaṃ ca pādyaṃ ca śuddhasaṃvedanātmakam | dhyānasaṃvedanaṃ puṣpaṃ sarvaṃ dhyānaparaṃ viduḥ || 29 ||

Meditation is the water offered to a guest, and the water for washing the feet, made entirely of pure awareness. The felt experience of meditation is the flower. They know that everything here centers on meditation.

vinā tenetareṇāyamātmā labhyata eva no | dhyānātprasādamāyāti sarvabhogasukhaśriyaḥ || 30 ||

Except by that, by nothing else, can this self ever be reached. Through meditation, one comes to a grace that is the glory of every pleasure and happiness.

ayamātmā mune bhuṅkte deharūpo gṛhe yathā | dhyānenānena sumate nimeṣāṃstu trayodaśa || 31 ||

O sage, this self enjoys, in the shape of the body, just as one does in a house. O wise one, by this meditation, for thirteen blinks of an eye,

mūḍho'pi pūjayitveśaṃ gopradānaphalaṃ labhet pūjayitvā nimeṣāṇāṃ śatamekamiti prabhum || 32 ||

even a fool, having worshipped the lord for that long, gets the reward of the gift of a cow. Having worshipped the lord thus for a hundred blinks of an eye,

aśvamedhasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ | pūjayitvā svamātmānaṃ ghaṭikārdhamiti prabhum || 33 ||

a man gets the reward of the horse-sacrifice. Having worshipped his own self, the lord, for half a ghatika,

aśvamedhasahasrasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ | dhyānavalyupahāreṇa svayamātmānamātmanā || 34 ||

a man gets the reward of a thousand horse-sacrifices, worshipping the self by the self, with the offering of meditation.

ghaṭikāṃ pūjayedyastu rājasūyaṃ labhet saḥ | madhyāhnpūjanādithaṃ rājasūyaikalakṣabhāk || 35 ||

Whoever worships for a whole ghatika gets the reward of the rajasuya sacrifice. Worshipping thus at midday, he shares in a hundred thousand rajasuya sacrifices.

divasaṃ pūjayitvaiavaṃ pare dhāmni vasennaraḥ eṣo'sau paramo yoga eṣā sā paramā kriyā bāhyasaṃpūjanaṃ proktametaduttamamātmanaḥ || 36 ||

Having worshipped in this way for a whole day, a man comes to dwell in the highest abode. This is the highest yoga; this is the highest act. This has been called the outward worship, the highest worship there is of the self.

etatpavitramakhilāghavighātahetuṃ yastvācariṣyati naraḥ kṣaṇamapyakhinnāḥ taṃ vandayiṣyati surāsuralokapūgaḥ prāptāspadaṃ jagati māmiva muktamātman || 37 ||

Whatever man practices this pure rite, the cause that destroys all sin, even for a single moment, without growing weary, him the crowds of the worlds of gods and demons will honor, as one who has won his place in the world, freed like me, dear one.
