Sri Vasishtha said: Like the ocean holding within it the many waves still to rise, the awareness that carries countless worlds — O sinless one, that awareness is you.
bhava bhāvanayā mukto bhāvābhāvavivarjitaḥ | cidātmansaṃsthitāḥ keva vada te vāsanādayaḥ || 2 ||
Be free through right understanding, beyond both what exists and what does not. Tell me — resting in the self which is consciousness, what are your impressions and habits really like?
Consciousness itself, by its own nature, shines forth as this is a living being, and these are its impressions and so on. Dear one, what real connection is there here between that other statement and its meaning? Explain it.
You are an ocean of consciousness, deep and shining with great waves, yet the wave called Rama in you has grown still. You are calm and gentle like the sky.
Heat is not separate from fire. Fragrance is not separate from the lotus. Blackness is not separate from soot. Whiteness is not separate from snow. Sweetness is not separate from sugarcane.
Light is not separate from what shines, and felt experience is not separate from consciousness. Just as a wave is not separate from water, so the world is not separate from the nature of consciousness.
cito na bhinno'nubhavo bhinno nānubhavādaham | na matto bhidyate jīvo na jīvādbhidyate manaḥ || 7 ||
Felt experience is not separate from consciousness, and I am not separate from felt experience. The individual self is not separate from me, and the mind is not separate from the individual self.
manaso nendriyaṃ bhinnaṃ pṛthagdehaśca nendriyāt | na śarīrājjagadbhinnaṃ jagato nānyadasti hi || 8 ||
The senses are not separate from the mind, and the body is not separate from the senses. The world is not separate from the body, and nothing else exists apart from the world.
evaṃ pravartitamidaṃ mahaccakramidaṃ ciram | naca pravartitaṃ kiñcinna ca śīghraṃ ca no ciram || 9 ||
So this great wheel has kept turning for a long age. Yet nothing has really been set moving at all — there is no fastness in it and no long time either.
svavedanamanantaṃ ca sarvamevamakhṇḍitam | vidyate vyomani vyoma na kasmiṃścinnakiṃcana || 10 ||
One's own awareness is endless, and everything, in this way, is whole and undivided. It is like sky resting within sky — it is not located in anything, and it is not any separate thing.
rūpālokamanaskārānkurvannapi na kiṃcana | jñāḥ karotyanupādeyānna jñasyaiva hi kartṛtā || 12 ||
Even while giving rise to forms, sights and thoughts, the knowing self does nothing at all. These things are not really its own to hold, for the knowing self has no true doership.
yadupādeyabuddhyā ca tadduduḥkhāya sukhāya te | bhāvābhāvena nādeyamakartṛ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ || 13 ||
Whatever you regard as something to hold onto becomes a cause of your pain or your pleasure. But whether it exists or not, it is truly nothing to hold onto — and one who does nothing has no share in pleasure and pain.
Just as the words sky, in the sky, and skies seem to be many but are really not different — a set of words that, though meaningful, point to something with no real division in it — so it is with the relation between the self and the world.
Within, he is as pure as clear space. Outwardly, he is active and moves correctly through his duties. Amid the changes of joy and anger, he stays as still as a piece of wood or a clod of earth.
samūlakāṣaṃ kaṣati nadītaṭa iva drumaṃ | yaḥ sauhṛdaṃ matsaraṃ ca sa harṣāmarṣadoṣahā || 17 ||
As a riverbank erodes a tree, roots and all, so the one who wears away both fondness and envy destroys the faults of joy and anger.
If you do not dwell on the true nature of the disturbances of liking and disliking, then even though they are present, they are as good as unreal, and even though you act on them, it is as if you never did.
The one who has no sense of I am the doer, whose intellect is never stained — even if he kills these people, he does not really kill, and he is not bound by it.
Taking something that does not exist to be real is called illusion. This illusion is destroyed by right understanding alone — there is no doubt about it.
niḥsnehadīpavacchānto yasyāntarvāsanābharaḥ| tena citrakṛteneva jitaṃ jñenāvikāriṇā || 21 ||
The one whose inner burden of desires has become quiet, like a lamp that has run out of oil — that unchanging knower, motionless as a painted figure, has achieved victory.
yasyānupādeyamidaṃ samastaṃ padārthajātaṃ sadasaddaśāsu| na duḥkhadāhāya sukhāya naiva vimukta eveha sajīva eva || 22 ||
The one for whom this whole mass of things, whether they seem real or unreal, is nothing to hold on to — for whom it brings neither the burning pain of sorrow nor pleasure — he is truly liberated while still alive, he alone is such.
