16.24.1

bhushuṇḍa uvāca | ekaiva kevalā dṛṣṭirnirāpāyā gatabhramā | vidyate sarvavittveṣu sarvaśreṣṭhā samunnatā || 1 ||

Bhushunda said: There is only one true insight. It is pure, safe from all harm, and free of all confusion. Among every kind of knowing, it is the best of all, the highest.

ātmacintā samastānāṃ duḥkhānāmantakāriṇī | cirasaṃbhṛtaduḥsvapnasamsārabhramahāriṇī || 2 ||

Thought about oneself ends all sorrows. It removes the confusion of the world, which is a bad dream held on to for a long time.

niṣkalaṅkamanomārgavipulāṅgaṇacāriṇī | tathā samastaduḥkhānāṃ cintānarthavināśinī || 3 ||

It moves freely through the wide, clear space of the mind. It also destroys the harmful worry that lies behind every sorrow.

jyotsnayevāndhakārāṇāmalamantaḥ prajāyate | sā svātmacintā bhagavansarvasaṅkalpavarjitā || 4 ||

It arises within, like moonlight, strong enough to drive away the darkness. Venerable one, this thought about oneself is free of all wishing and imagining.

yuṣmadādiṣu suprāpā duṣprāpaivāsmadādiṣu | samastakalanātītaṃ parāṃ koṭimupāgatam || 5 ||

This is easy to reach for you and those like you, but hard to reach for us and those like us. It goes beyond all reckoning; it has reached the highest point.

padamāsādayantyetatkathaṃ sāmānyabuddhayaḥ | ātmacintāvilāsinyāstasyāḥ sakhyo mahāmune || 6 ||

How can ordinary minds reach this state? Great sage, hear now about the friends of that playful thought about oneself.

kiṃcitsāmyamupāyātā vijñānaśaśiśītalāḥ | ātmacintāsamānānāṃ vividhānāṃ munīśvara || 7 ||

Among the many things that are like thought about oneself, lord of sages, a few have come a little close to it, cool like the moon of true knowledge.

ātmacintāvayasyānāṃ madhyādekatamā mayā | sarvaduḥkhakṣayakarī sarvasaubhāgyavardhinī || 8 ||

Among the friends of thought about oneself, I count one above the rest. She ends every sorrow and increases every good fortune.

kāraṇaṃ jīvitasyeha prāṇacintā samāśritā | śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktavantaṃ vihagaṃ bhuśuṇḍaṃ punarapyaham | jānannapīdamavyagraḥ pṛṣṭavānkrīḍayā munim || 9 ||

Here, the cause of life rests on concern for the vital breath. Sri Vasishtha said: The bird Bhushunda had said this. Even so, I asked the sage again. I already knew the answer and felt no unease; I asked only in play.

sarvasaṃśayavicchedinnatyantacirajīvita | yathārtham brūhi me sādho prāṇacintā kimucyate || 10 ||

You cut through every doubt, and your life is exceedingly long. Tell me truly, good sage, what is meant by concern for the vital breath.

bhūśuṇḍa uvāca sarvavedāntavettāsi sarvasaṃśayanāśakaḥ māmetatparihāsārthaṃ mune pṛcchasi vāyasam || 11 ||

Bhushunda said: You know all of Vedanta; you destroy every doubt. Sage, you ask me, a crow, only in jest.

athavā bhavatāmeva bhagavanpariśikṣitum punaḥ pratyuttarāṇīdaṃ kā me kṣatirupasthitā || 12 ||

Or perhaps, venerable one, you ask only to sharpen your own understanding. Even so, what do I lose by answering you again?

bhūśuṇḍajīvitakaraṃ bhūśuṇḍasvātmalābhadam śṛṇu prāṇasamādhānaṃ vakṣyamāṇamidaṃ mayā || 13 ||

Listen now to this settling of the vital breath, which I am about to explain. It is what keeps Bhushunda alive; it is what has brought Bhushunda to his own true self.

paśyedaṃ bhagavansarvaṃ dehagehaṃ manoramam tripakāramahāsthūṇaṃ navadvārasamāvṛtam || 14 ||

Venerable one, see all of this: the pleasant house that is the body. It is held up by one great three-part pillar, and enclosed by nine doors.

puryaṣṭakakalatreṇa tanmātrasvajanena ca ahaṃkāragṛhasthana sarvataḥ paripālitam || 15 ||

On every side, this house is kept up: its wife is the subtle body, its kinfolk are the subtle elements, and its householder is the ego.

antaḥ paśyasi satkarṇaśaṣkulīcandraśālikam | śiroruhācchādanavadvipulākṣigavākṣakam || 16 ||

Inside, you see: the two ears are its rooftop turrets, the hair is its roof-covering, and the large eyes are its windows.

176.24.17

āsyapradhānasudvāra bhujapārśvopamandiram | dantālikeśarasragbhirbhūṣitadvārakoṭaram || 17 ||

The mouth is the house's main door. The arms on either side are like halls built onto it. Its gateway is decorated with garlands made of teeth, delicate like garlands of flowers.

186.24.18

anārataṃ rūparasasparśanadvārapālavat | saṃkulālokavalitaṃ tārālindakṛtasthiti || 18 ||

Sight, taste and touch stand as its doorkeepers, always on watch. It is crowded with sights on every side, and the pupils of its eyes form its terrace.

raktamāṃsavasādigdhaṃ snāyusaṃtativeṣṭitam | sthūlāsthikāṣṭhasaṃbaddhaṃ sukudayaṃ susamāhitam || 19 ||

It is coated with blood, flesh and fat, and wrapped in a network of sinews. Thick bones serve as its timber, holding it together. Its walls are strong, and it is well put together.

iḍā ca piṅgalā cāsya dehasya munināyaka | susthite komale madhye pārśvakoṣṭhe nimīlite || 20 ||

Ida and pingala, O chief of sages, are the two channels of this body; they rest well in the soft middle part, hidden away in the closed chambers on its two sides.

padmayugmatrayaṃ yantramasthimāṃsamayaṃ mṛduūrdhvādhonālamanyonyamilatkomalasaddalam || 21 ||

This machine is made of three pairs of lotuses, formed of bone and flesh, soft to the touch, with stalks running upward and downward, its soft petals touching one another.

sekena vikasatpatraṃ sakalākāśacāriṇācalanti tasya patrāṇi mṛdu vyāptāni vāyunā || 22 ||

Sprinkled with moisture its petals open, the way they would from a breeze moving through the whole sky; its petals stir, softly filled with that air.

calatsu teṣu patreṣu sa marutparivardhatevātāhate latāpatrajāle bahirivābhitaḥ || 23 ||

When those petals move, the breath inside grows greater, the way a web of vine leaves struck by the wind spreads and stirs all around, as though it were outside the body.

vṛddhiṃ nītaḥ sa nāḍīṣu kṛtvā sthānamanekadhāūrdhvādhovartamānāsu dehe'sminprasaratyatha || 24 ||

Once grown in this way, it settles in many places among the channels running upward and downward, and then spreads through this whole body.

prāṇāpānasamānādyaistataḥ sa hṛdayānilaḥsaṃketaiḥ procyate tajjñairvicitrācāraceṣṭitaiḥ || 25 ||

Then those who understand this call this breath of the heart by names such as prana, apana and samana, names given for its many different actions and movements.

hṛtpadmayantratritaye samastāḥ prāṇaśaktayaḥ ūrdhvādhaḥ prasṛtā dehe candra bimbādivāṃśavaḥ || 26 ||

In the three machines of the heart lotus, all the powers of breath spread upward and downward through the body, like rays spreading out from the disk of the moon.

yāntyāyānti vikarṣanti haranti viharanti ca utpatanti patantyāśu tā etāḥ prāṇaśaktayaḥ || 27 ||

These powers of breath go out and come back, they pull, they carry things away, they move about, they fly up and quickly fall down again, such are these powers of breath.

sa eṣa hṛtpadmagataḥ prāṇa ityucyate budhaiḥ asya kācinmune śaktiḥ praspandayati locane || 28 ||

This power, seated in the lotus of the heart, is the one the wise call prana. One part of it, O sage, makes the eyes blink and move.

kācispṛśamupādatte kācidvahati nāsayā kācidannaṃ jarayati kācidvakti vacāṃsi ca || 29 ||

One part takes hold of the sense of touch, one part moves through the nose, one part digests the food eaten, and one part speaks out words.

bahunātra kimuktena sarvameva śarīrake karoti bhagavānvāyuryantrehāmiva yāntrikaḥ || 30 ||

What use is there in saying more about this? The lord Vayu does everything in the body, the way a mechanic works a machine.

tatror-dhvādhodvisaṅketau prasṛtāvanilau mune | prāṇāpānāviti khyātau prakaṭau dvau varānilau || 31 ||

There, O sage, two winds spread out, one going upward and one going downward; these two well known and excellent winds are called prana and apana.

tayoranusarannityaṃ mune gatimahaṃ sthitaḥ | śītoṣṇavapuṣornityaṃ nityamambarapānthayoḥ || 32 ||

O sage, I always stand following the movement of these two; they are forever cold and hot in body, forever travelers of the sky.

336.24.33

kalevaramahāyantravāhayoḥ śramahīnayoḥ | hṛdākāśārkaśaśinos tvagnīṣomasvarūpayoḥ || 33 ||

They are the two that drive the great machine of the body without ever growing tired, the sun and moon of the heart's sky, whose true forms are fire and soma.

śarīrapurapālasya manaso rathacakrayoḥ | ahaṃkāranṛpasya asya praśasyeṣṭaturangayoḥ || 34 ||

They are the two wheels of the chariot of the mind, the mind that guards the city of the body; they are also the two fine and favorite horses of this king, the ego.

356.24.35

tayormamānusarataḥ prāṇāpānābhidhānayoḥ | gatiṃ śarīramarutorāśarīramaruddhayoḥ || 35 ||

Following the movement of these two named prana and apana, these two winds of the body go on without stopping for as long as the body lasts.

jāgratsvapnasuṣupteṣu sadaiva samarūpayoḥ| suṣuptasaṃsthitasyeva brahman gacchanti vāsarāḥ || 36 ||

They stay the same in waking, in dream, and in deep sleep, O Brahmin; my days pass as though I were one resting in deep sleep.

sahasravinikṛttāṅgādbisatantulavādapi| durlakṣyā vidyamānāpi gatiḥ sūkṣmatarā'nayoḥ || 37 ||

The movement of these two is finer even than a strand of lotus fiber cut into a thousand pieces; though it is real and present, it is hard to see.

aviratagatayorgatiṃ viditvā hṛdi marutoranusṛtya coditāṃ tām| na punariha hi jāyate mahātmanmuditamanāḥ puruṣaḥ praṇaṣṭapāśaḥ || 38 ||

A man who comes to know the movement of these two winds that move without stopping in the heart, and who follows that moving movement, becomes glad in mind and has his bonds destroyed; such a man, O great soul, is not born again in this world.
