then, you who know the truth, you hold that state steady even for a moment, since its nature never decays — in that very moment you fully reach that good state.
Or, dear one, if instead you simply settle your steadiness in the mere form of existence in general, then with a little more effort you reach that same state.
And if, faultless one, having fixed your meditation on the truth of pure awareness, you remain steady in it, then with even greater effort, more fully, you reach that same state.
yacchintayasi yadyāsi yattiṣṭhasi karoṣi ca| tatra tatra sthitā saṃvitsaṃvideva tadeva sā|| 8 ||
Whatever you think about, wherever you go, wherever you stand, whatever you do — in every one of these, awareness alone is present; it is nothing but awareness, and that awareness is itself that state.
As long as there is no true knowledge of reality, how can the mind find calm? And as long as the mind has not calmed down, there is no realizing of the truth.
tattvajñānaṃ manonāśo vāsanākṣaya eva ca | mithaḥ kāraṇatāṃ gatvāduḥsādhyāni sthitānyataḥ || 18 ||
Knowledge of the truth, destruction of the mind, and destruction of desire — since each is the cause of the other two, they stand as things hard to achieve.
cirakāloparacitā apyete sudhiyāpi ca | ekaśaḥ paramabhyetuṃ na śaktāḥ sainikā iva || 19 ||
Even when built up over a long time, and even by a wise mind, these three cannot reach the highest goal alone, one at a time — just as soldiers cannot, alone.
samamudyogamānītāḥ santa ete hi dhīmatā | saṃsārābdhiṃ nikṛntanti jalānyadritaṭāniva || 20 ||
When these three are brought together into one combined effort by a wise person, they cut through the ocean of worldly existence, as flowing water cuts through a mountain's slope.
vāsanākṣayavijñānamanonāśāḥ prayatnataḥ | samaṃ sevyāstava ciraṃ tena tāta na lipyase || 21 ||
Destroy desire, gain true knowledge, and destroy the mind — pursue these three together, with effort, for a long time, dear child; by this you will remain untouched.
When these three are practiced for a long time, the firm knots of the heart break completely, with nothing left, like the fibers of a lotus stalk breaking all at once when it is cut.
Rama, this state of worldly existence has been strengthened through hundreds of other births; it does not wear away anywhere without long, sustained practice.
Those who know the truth know that holding back the breath is equal to the complete giving up of desire; therefore, one should also take up breath-control in this way.
vāsanāsaṃparityāgācchittaṃ gacchatyacittatām | prāṇaspandanirodhācca yathecchasi tathā kuru || 26 ||
When desires are completely given up, the mind stops being a mind. The same happens when the movement of the breath is stopped. Do whichever of the two you wish.
prāṇāyāmacirābhyāsairyuktyā ca gurudattayā | āsanāśanayogena prāṇaspando niruddhyate || 27 ||
Through long practice of breath control, through the method taught by a guru, and through the right way of sitting and eating, the movement of the breath is stopped.
yathābhūtārthadarśitvādvāsanā na pravartate | ādāvante ca vastūnāmavisamvādi yatsthitam || 28 ||
When a person sees things exactly as they are, desire does not arise. In everything, from its beginning to its end, there is something that stays the same and never deceives.
That is the true form, and seeing it truly is knowledge. Through that knowledge desire wastes away, because a person now deals with the world without any attachment, and because every thought of becoming is given up.
śarīranāśadarśitvādvāsanā na pravartate | vāsanāvibhave naṣṭe na cittaṃ saṃpravartate || 30 ||
When a person sees that the body must perish, desire does not arise. And when this great mass of desires is destroyed, the mind itself stops working.
That is why dust rises in the world, as if from a rubbish heap. So a wise person should make a great, strong effort to conquer the movement of the breath.
One way is to sit down again and again, holding the mind on a single point, over and over. Or, instead, giving up this slow, step-by-step way, a person may choose to seize the mind directly.
aṅkuśena vinā mattam yathā duṣṭam mataṅgajam | adhyātmavidyādhigamaḥ sādhusaṅgama eva ca || 35 ||
A wild, vicious elephant in rut cannot be controlled without a goad. In the same way, the mind is mastered only by gaining true spiritual knowledge and by keeping the company of good people.
By these methods the mind is conquered quickly, just as streams of rain quickly settle the dust of the earth. Yet even when such true methods are at hand, there are some who instead try to force the mind under control.
Those foolish people who are bent on conquering the mind by force are like someone who throws away the lamp and tries to beat away the darkness with dark eye-salve.
They try to tie up a raging elephant with threads of lotus fiber. It is the same as trying to hold the mind, which is not far away at all, it sits right there in its own body.
sādhayanti samutsṛjya yuktiṃ ye tānhaṭhānviduḥ | bhayādbhayamupāyānti kleśātkleśaṃ vrajanti te || 40 ||
As for those who give up the right method and try to force it instead, know that this is only force. They go from one fear to another, and from one suffering to the next.
Their minds are utterly confused and frightened, like pitiful, timid deer. Their understanding becomes like a delicate woman whose limbs have been cut and left withered.
Their mind never trusts anything, like a doe that has wandered into a village. Their mind, tossed about by waves, is like the water of a dangerous, stormy pond.
Their mind is swept far away, tumbling helplessly, like a blade of grass in a mountain torrent, spending all its time on the empty round of sacrifices, penances, gifts, pilgrimages, and the worship of gods.
ciramādhiśatopetāḥ kṣapayanti mṛgā iva| ātmatattvaṃ vidhivaśātkadācitkecideva te || 45 ||
Long troubled by hundreds of mental worries, they waste themselves away like animals. Only a rare few among them, by the chance of fate, ever come to know the truth of the self.
duḥkhadoṣaśatādagdhā vidanti na vidanti vā| āgamāpāyino'nityā narakasvargamānuṣaiḥ || 46 ||
Burned by hundreds of sufferings and faults, they may know the truth, or they may not. Through births as beings of hell, of heaven, or as humans, everything keeps coming and going, nothing lasts.
Taking the shape of falling and rising, again and again, they wear themselves out like bouncing balls. These beings go to hell, then to heaven, then back here to this world.
Take refuge in pure awareness. Be free of all attachment, and stay steady. Only the person who has true knowledge is happy; only the person who has knowledge truly lives; only the person who has knowledge is strong. So become full of knowledge.
Great one, see without any division that single, first, highest state of pure awareness, the one that can never become an object to be known. Stay settled in your own heart, free of every thought and mental construct. Keep on acting, but act as one who is not the doer, and shine with the glow that peace brings.
