Sri Vasishtha said: When, through inquiry, the mind had become almost fully set to rest, then in Vitahavya there arose the qualities that begin with friendliness.
Sri Rama said: O sage, when the very nature of the mind had vanished through the rise of inquiry, you said that the qualities beginning with friendliness arose. What do you mean by this, lord?
brahmaṇyastaṃ gate citte kasya maitryādayo guṇāḥ | kva vā parisfurantīti vada me vadatāṃ vara || 3 ||
When the mind has set to rest in Brahman, whose are the qualities that begin with friendliness? Or where do they appear? Tell me this, best of speakers.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dvividhaścittanāśo'sti sarūpo'rūpa eva ca | jīvanmuktaḥ sarūpaḥ syād arūpo dehamuktijaḥ || 4 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: The destruction of the mind is of two kinds: with form and without form. The one with form is called liberation while still alive; the formless one is born when the body is given up.
Here, the mind's existing brings suffering; the mind's destruction brings happiness. Having worn away the mind's existence, one should bring the mind to its destruction.
duḥkhamūlamavaṣṭabdhamasminneva viniscalam | vidyamānaṃ mano viddhi duḥkhavṛkṣavanāṅkuram || 9 ||
Know that the mind, while it exists, is the root of suffering, held fast and unmoving right here - it is the seed of the whole forest of the tree of suffering.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | cetasaḥ kathitā sattā mayā raghukulodvaha | asya nāśamidānīṃ tvaṃ śrṇu praśnavidāṃ vara || 11 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: O best of the Raghu line, I have told you of the mind's existing. Now listen to its destruction, best of those who know how to ask.
The steady man whom the states of pleasure and pain, through his evenness, cannot shake - as mere breaths cannot move a great mountain - his mind, they say, is dead.
O good man, this is the destruction of the mind; here the mind is said to be destroyed. This state of the mind's destruction belongs to one who is liberated while still alive.
Rama, some people give the name 'mind' to this very thing: the joyful play of true being, the ending of the thinking mind, which is the true nature of one who is freed while still alive.
Sinless one, the mind of the person who is freed while still alive becomes full of the best tendencies, filled with good qualities such as friendliness, and it is set free from ever being born again.
Rama, this very being of the mind of one who is freed while still alive, when it is completely filled with a tendency that will never bring another birth, is called true being.
This destruction of the mind, the kind that still has a form, belongs to the person who is freed while still alive. It is felt right here, right now, reached by attaining true being while the body still remains.
Then, in the destruction of the mind of one who is freed while still alive, joyful qualities such as friendliness shine like moonlight, and stay there always, in every way.
In the destruction of the mind that is named true being, in one who is freed while still alive, it is like the Himalaya: riches of good qualities burst out like blossoms in spring.
But the destruction of the mind that has no form at all, Rama, the one I have already spoken of, exists only in the one who is freed without a body, and it has no parts at all.
Even true being, though it holds within it every fine quality there is, melts away completely in the state of being freed without a body, a state that is spotless and supremely pure.
In that state of being freed without a body, where true being itself has come to an end, in this destruction of the mind that is called formless, nothing at all exists.
na guṇā nāguṇāstatra na śrīrnaśrīrna lolatā | na codayo nāstamayo na harṣāmarṣasaṃvidaḥ || 26 ||
There, there are no good qualities and no bad ones, no glory and no lack of glory, no restlessness. There is no rising and no setting. There is no feeling of joy and no feeling of anger.
na tejo na tamaḥ kiñcinna saṃdhyā dinarātrayaḥ | na diśo na ca vākāśo nādho nānartharūpatā || 27 ||
There is no light, no darkness at all, no dusk, no day, no night. There are no directions and no sky. There is no below. There is not even meaninglessness.
na vāsanā na racanā nehānīhe na rañjanā | na sattā nāpi vā'sattā na ca sādhyaṃ hi tatpadam || 28 ||
There is no old tendency, no making of anything, no striving and no absence of striving, no trace of feeling. There is no existence, and there is no non-existence either. And that state cannot be reached by any effort.
That is like a sky whose brightness has no darkness in it, with no stars, no moon, no sun, no wind, just as clear as autumn, with no dusk, and a shine that carries no dust.
ye hi pāraṃ gatā buddheḥ saṃsārācaraṇasya ca | teṣāṃ tadāspadaṃ sphāraṃ pavanānāmivāmbaram || 30 ||
For those who have gone beyond the intellect and beyond acting in this cycle of birth and death, that vast resting place is like the sky is for the winds.
In that state, where all sorrow has come to rest, which is fully awake and never dull, quiet as sleep and heavy with bliss, free of all passion and darkness, there the great ones live, whose only covering is the sky itself, who have no body at all, and in whom even the last trace of the mind has melted away.
