15.84.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti nirṇīya sa munirvītahavyo vivāsanaḥ | āsītsamādhāvacalo vindhyakandarakoṭare || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having settled this in his mind, that sage Vitahavya, who lived apart from all others, remained still in deep meditation, in a hollow of a Vindhya ravine.

25.84.2

aparispanditāśeṣasaṃvidānandasundaraḥ | babhāvastagatamanāḥ stimiāmbhodhiśobhanaḥ || 2 ||

He shone with a beauty that came from a whole, unstirring awareness and bliss; his mind had come to rest, and he was lovely like a calm, still ocean.

antareva śaśāmāsya krameṇa prāṇasaṃtatiḥ | jvālājālaparispando dagdhendhana ivānalaḥ || 3 ||

Inside him, little by little, the flow of his breath grew still, the way a fire's flickering flames die down once the fuel has burned away.

anantarniṣṭhatāṃ yāte bāhyārthe cāpyasaṃsthite | śeṣe'ntarlabdhasaṃsthāne tasyāsphuritapakṣmaṇī || 4 ||

By then the world outside had stopped reaching him and had lost its footing, and what was left had settled inward; his eyelids became still, without a flutter.

ghrāṇaprāntagatālpālpasamāloke ivekṣaṇe | ardhakuḍmalitaiḥ padmaiḥ śriyamāyayatuḥ samām || 5 ||

His two eyes, turned toward the tip of his nose, seemed to hold the very faintest gaze, and, like two half-opened lotuses, they took on a calm, even beauty.

65.84.6

samakāyaśirogrīvasthānakaḥ sa mahāmatiḥ | āsīcchailādivotkīrṇaścitrārpite ivāthavā || 6 ||

That great sage, holding his body, head and neck perfectly level and still, seemed carved out of rock, or like a figure set in a painting.

tathābhitiṣṭhatastasya saṃvatsarśatatrayam | koṭare vindhyakacchasya yayāvardhamuhūrtavat || 7 ||

As he stayed like that, three hundred years went by in the hollow of that Vindhya woodland, passing like half a moment.

etāvantamasau kālaṃ nābuddhyata kilātmavān | jīvanmuktatayā dhyānī na ca tatyāja tāṃ tanum || 8 ||

That self-possessed man, it is said, did not even notice that so much time had passed. Being freed while still alive, the meditator did not give up his body.

tāvatkālaṃ sa subhago na prābuddhyata yogavit | udārairambudārāvairāsārabharaghargharaiḥ || 9 ||

That fortunate sage, skilled in yoga, did not wake for all that time, not at the deep rumble of storm clouds, not at the heavy gurgling roar of rain,

105.84.10

paryantamaṇḍalādhīśamṛgayānatabṛṃhitaiḥ | pakṣivānaranirhrādairmātaṅgāsphoṭanisvanaiḥ || 10 ||

not at the trumpeting of elephants that cowered before a neighboring king's hunt, not at the loud cries of birds and monkeys, not at the crashing trumpet-sounds of elephants,

115.84.11

siṃhasaṃrambharṭitairnirjharārāvasītkṛtaiḥ viṣamāśanisampātairjanakolāhalairghanaiḥ || 11 ||

not at the furious roars of lions, not at the roaring hiss of waterfalls, not at the fierce crash of thunderbolts, not at the loud clamor of crowds of people,

125.84.12

pramattaśarabhāsphoṭairbhūkampataṭaghaṭṭanaiḥ vanadāhadhamadhvānairjalaughāhativalganaiḥ || 12 ||

not at the crashing of maddened sharabhas, not at the shaking crash of riverbanks in an earthquake, not at the roaring sound of forest fires, not at the surging clash of floodwaters,

135.84.13

mahopalataṭāghātairdharṇītalamṛjjalaiḥ jalaughāndolanāyātaistāpairanalakarkaśaiḥ || 13 ||

not at the pounding blows of huge boulders on the slopes, not at the waters scouring the face of the earth, not at the rocking sway of the oncoming floods, not at heat as harsh as fire.

kevalaṃ vahati svairaṃ kāle galitakāraṇam pariyāntīṣu varṣāsu laharīṣviv vāriṇi || 14 ||

Only it went on quietly, by itself, as time passed, its cause now gone, the way waves in water keep moving even as the rain is passing away.

svalpenaiva hi kālena tasminparvatakandare prāvṛḍoghavinunnenapankenorvītale kṛtaḥ || 15 ||

In just a short time, in that mountain cave, mud carried along by the monsoon floods fixed him into the ground.

tatrāsāvavasadbhūmaukoṭare saṃkaṭodare | paṅkasaṃpīḍitaskandhaḥ parvateṣu śilā yathā || 16 ||

There he stayed, in the earth, inside a hollow with a narrow inner space, his shoulders gripped tight by the mud, like a rock lodged among the mountains.

śatatraye sa varṣāṇāmatha yāte svayaṃprabhuḥ | vyabudhyatātmarūpātmā dharākoṭarapīḍitaḥ || 17 ||

Then, when three hundred years had passed, he awoke as his own master, his very self one with the true Self, still pressed in by the hollow of the earth.

saṃvidevāsya taṃ dehaṃ jagrahōrvīnipīḍitam | tanuḥ prāṇamayaspandaḥ prāṇasaṃsaraṇaṃ vinā || 18 ||

His awareness alone took hold again of that body, pressed down by the earth, a body that pulsed with the mere presence of the life-breath, though the breath itself was not moving through it.

utpattiprauḍhimāsādya kalanā hṛdayāntare | svamanorūpiṇī tasya hṛdyevānubabhūva sā || 19 ||

The stirring of thought, growing to full strength as it rose within his heart, appeared right there in his heart, taking the shape of his own mind.

kailāsakānane kānte kadambasya tarostale | munitvaṃ śatamabdānāṃ jīvanmuktātmanirmalam || 20 ||

In the lovely Kailasa forest, under a kadamba tree, for a hundred years he lived as a sage, pure and free like one who is liberated while still alive.

vidyādharatvaṃ varṣāṇāṃ śatamādhivivarjitam | yugapañcakamindratvaṃ praṇataṃ suracāraṇaiḥ || 21 ||

For a hundred years he was a Vidyadhara, free of all inner trouble, and for five ages he was Indra, honored by gods and celestial singers.

śrīrāma uvāca | śakratvādiṣu teṣvasyapratibhāseṣu bho mune | niyamo'niyamaścaiva dikkālaniyateḥ katham || 22 ||

Sri Rama said: O sage, in these different forms of his, such as becoming Indra, how is it that the fixed order of place and time is sometimes kept and sometimes not kept?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sarvātmikaiṣā cicchaktiryatrodeti yathā yathā | tathā tatrāśu bhavati tathātmaikasvabhāvataḥ || 23 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: This power of awareness is present in everything. Wherever it arises, and in whatever way, it quickly becomes that very thing there, because its whole nature is to be one with itself.

yathā yatra yadā buddhau niyamaḥ sa tadā sthitaḥ | deśakālādiniyamakramāṇāṃ tanmayātmatā || 24 ||

In whatever way, place, and time a rule is fixed in the mind, that rule stands firm there and then. The self takes on exactly the form of these fixed patterns of place, time, and the rest.

tena nānāvidhānyeṣa jaganti paradṛṣṭavān | hṛdi saṃvedanākāśe vītahavyo vivāsanaḥ || 25 ||

Through that power, Vitahavya, free of desires, has seen these many kinds of worlds in the open space of awareness within his heart.

samyagbodhavatāmeṣā vāsanaiava na vāsanā | jñānāgnidagdhā'dagdhasya kaiva bījasya bījatā || 26 ||

For those who have full understanding, this tendency of the mind is not really a tendency at all. A seed burnt by the fire of knowledge, even if it looks unburnt, what power does it still have to grow?

kalpamekaṃ gaṇatvaṃ sa candramauleścakāra ha | samastavidyānipuṇaṃ trikālāmaladarśanam || 27 ||

For one whole cosmic age he became one of Shiva's attendants, skilled in every branch of knowledge, seeing past, present and future without any flaw.

yo yādṛgdṛḍhasaṃskāraḥ sa taṃ paśyati tādṛśam | jīvanmuktatayaiavaitadvītahavyo'nubhūtavān || 28 ||

Whatever firm impression a person carries, he sees things exactly according to that. Vitahavya experienced all this precisely as one who is free while still alive.

śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ sthite muniśreṣṭha jīvanmuktamaterapi | bandhamokṣadṛśaḥ santi vītahavyātmano yathā || 29 ||

Sri Rama said: Since this is so, best of sages, views of bondage and liberation exist even for a mind that is freed while living, just as they existed for Vitahavya's own self.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathāsthitamidaṃ viśvaṃ śāntamākāśanirmalam | brahmaiva jīvanmuktānāṃ bandhamokṣadṛśaḥ kutaḥ || 30 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: This universe, just as it stands, is peaceful and pure as the open sky, it is nothing but Brahman itself. For those who are free while living, how could there be any view of bondage or freedom?

etatsaṃvinnabho bhāti yatra yatra yathā yathā | tatra tatra tathā tāvattāvattadvindate tatam || 31 ||

This awareness, like an open sky, shines everywhere. Wherever it shines, and however it shines, there, in that same way and to that same degree, it spreads out and takes that form.

tenānubhūtāni bahūnyanubhūyanta eva ca | jaganti sarvātmatayā brahmarūpeṇa rāghava || 32 ||

Through that awareness, many worlds have been experienced, and are being experienced right now, all of them, as one single self, in the form of Brahman, O Raghava.

dharākoṭaranirmagnavītahavyacidātmasu | jagatsu teṣvasaṃkhyeṣu nīrūpeṣu mahātmasu || 33 ||

These are countless worlds, without any fixed form, vast in extent. They are the very consciousness of Vitahavya, who lies sunk deep in a hollow of the earth.

yaḥ śakro'navabuddhātmā so'dya dīneṣu pārthivaḥ | kartuṃ pravṛtto mṛgayāṃ kṣaṇe'sminnapi kānane || 34 ||

He who was Indra, his true self not awakened, is today a poor king, and at this very moment he has set out to hunt in the forest.

yo haṃso'navabuddhātmā pādme paitāmahe'bhavat | sthitaḥ sa eva dāśendraḥ kailāsavanakuñjake || 35 ||

He who was a swan, his true self not awakened, lived in the age of Padma, in the world of Pitamaha, that same one now stands as a chief of fishermen in a grove of the Kailasa forest.

yo rājānavabuddhātmā bhūmeḥ saurāṣṭramanḍale | sa eṣo'dya sthito'ndhrāṇāṃ grāme bahulapādape || 36 ||

He who was a king, his true self not awakened, in the Saurashtra region of the earth, that same one today stands in a village of the Andhras, thick with trees.

śrīrāma uvāca | mānasaḥ kila sargo'sau vītahavyasya tatra ye | dehino bhrāntipātraṃ cettaddhehākāriṇaḥ katham || 37 ||

Sri Rama said: That whole creation, they say, is only in Vitahavya's mind. If the embodied beings there are nothing but a case of illusion, then how do they come to have bodies at all?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadi bhrāntyekamātrātma vītahavyasya tajjagat | tadidaṃ nāma te rāma kiṃ bhūyaḥ paribhāsate || 38 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: If that world of Vitahavya's is, in truth, nothing but illusion, then tell me, Rama, does not this world of yours appear in exactly the same way, once again?

idamapyanga cinmātraṃ manomātrabhramopamam | tadapi vyoma cinmātraṃ manomātraṃ bhramopamam || 39 ||

This world too, dear one, is nothing but awareness itself, like an illusion made only of mind. And that world of his, like the open sky, is also nothing but awareness, only mind, like an illusion.

vastutastu na tadrāma jagannainaṃ na cetarat | tavāpi na jagatsattā brahmedaṃ bhāti kevalam || 40 ||

But in truth, Rama, neither that world nor this one truly exists. Even your own world has no real existence, only this one Brahman shines, alone.

bhāvi bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyacca yathedaṃ ca tathetarat | jagatsarvamidaṃ dṛśyaṃ saṃvinmātramanomayam || 41 ||

What is now, what was, and what will be, as this world is, so is that other one too. This whole visible world is made only of awareness, only of mind.

evaṃrūpamidaṃ yāvanna parijñātamīdṛśaṃ | vajrasāradṛḍhaṃ tāvajjñātaṃ satparamāmbaram || 42 ||

This world is, in truth, nothing but the vast pure sky of being. But as long as it is not known to be of that nature, it is known only as something solid, as hard as diamond.

ajñānānmana evedaṃitthaṃ saṃpravijṛmbhate | pratyullāsavilāsābhyāṃ jalamambunidhāviva || 43 ||

Out of ignorance, the mind alone swells up and takes this form, again and again rising and playing, like water rising and playing in the ocean.

yathāsthitenaiva cidambareṇa svacittamevaiti manobhidhānam | sphāraṃ kṛtaṃ tena jagacca dṛśyamevaṃ tataṃ naiva tataṃ ca kiṃcit || 44 ||

The sky of pure awareness, remaining just as it is, itself becomes what is called one's own mind. Through that mind, the visible world too has been spread out wide. In this way it seems spread out, yet nothing at all is truly spread out.
