15.79.1

śrīrāma uvāca | yogayuktasya cittasya śama eva nirūpitaḥ | samyagjñānamidānīṃ me kathayānugrahātprabho || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: You have told me about the calm of a mind joined to yoga. Now, out of kindness, my lord, tell me true and complete knowledge.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | anādyantāvabhāsātmā paramātmeha vidyate | ityeko niścayaḥ sphāraḥ samyagjñānaṃ vidurbudhāḥ || 2 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Here there exists a supreme self whose shining light has no beginning and no end. The wise call this one vast certainty true knowledge.

imā ghaṭapaṭākārāḥ padārthaśatapaṅktayaḥ | ātmaiva nānyadastīti niścayaḥ samyagīkṣaṇam || 3 ||

These shapes like a pot and a cloth, these rows of hundreds of things, are here. The certainty that the self alone exists, and nothing else, is true seeing.

asamyagvedanājjanma mokṣaḥ samyagavekṣaṇāt | asamyagvedanādrajjuḥ sarpo no samyagīkṣaṇāt || 4 ||

Wrong knowing brings birth; right seeing brings freedom. Wrong knowing turns a rope into a snake; right seeing does not.

saṃkalpāṃśavinirmuktā saṃvitsaṃvedyavarjitā | saṃvittyābhisamākhyātā muktāvastīha netarat || 5 ||

That awareness is free of every trace of thought, free of any split between the knower and the known. It is simply called awareness. In freedom, only this exists here; nothing else.

sā śuddharūpā vijñātā paramātmeti kathyate | śuddhā tvaśuddharūpāntaravidyetyucyate budhaiḥ || 6 ||

That same awareness, known in its pure form, is called the supreme self. But the wise call it ignorance when it takes another, impure form.

saṃvittireva saṃvedyaṃ nānayordvitvakalpanā | cinotyātmānamātmaiva rāmaivaṃ nānyadasti hi || 7 ||

Awareness alone is the thing known; there is no true difference between the two. The self alone knows the self. Rama, nothing else exists at all.

yathābhūtātmadarśitvametāvadbhuvanatraye | yadātmaiva jagatsarvamiti niścitya pūrṇatā || 8 ||

In the three worlds, seeing the self as it truly is means only this: knowing for certain that the self alone is the whole world. That is fullness.

sarvamātmaiva kau diṣṭau bhāvābhāvau kva ca sthitau | kva bandhamokṣakalane kimanyadrāma śocyate || 9 ||

Everything is the self alone. Then where are these two, existence and non-existence? Where do they stand? Where is bondage, where is freedom? Rama, what else is there left to grieve for?

There is nothing else to know, no separate mind at all. This is Brahman alone, spreading out as everything. All is one, the highest space. Then what is freedom, and whose is bondage?

brahmedaṃ bṛṃhitākāraṃ vṛhadbṛhadavasthitam | jñānādastamitadvitvaṃ bhavātmaiva tvamātmanā || 11 ||

This same Brahman is vast in form; it stands ever greater and greater. Through knowledge, the sense of two disappears. You, yourself, become the self alone, by your own self.

samyagālokite rūpe kāṣṭhapāṣaṇavāsasām | manāgapi na bhedo'sti kvāsi saṃkalponmukhaḥ || 12 ||

When the shape of wood, stone, and cloth is truly seen, there is not even the slightest difference between them. Then where are you, so eager to imagine things?

ādāvante ca saṃśāntaṃ svarūpamavināśi yat | vastu nāmātmanaścaiva tanmayo bhava rāghava || 13 ||

That true nature which is at peace at the beginning and at the end, which is never destroyed, that reality belongs to the self alone. Raghava, become that.

paraṃ vyomeda makhilaṃ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam | sukhaduḥkhakramaḥ kutra vijvaro bhava rāghava || 14 ||

This whole world, all that moves and all that does not move, is the highest space itself. Then where is pleasure, where is pain? Raghava, be free of fever.

dvaitādvaitasamudbhūtairjarāmaraṇavibhramaiḥ | sphuratyātmabhirātmaiva citrairambviva vīcibhiḥ || 15 ||

The self alone appears as countless selves, full of the confusions of old age and death, arising from both duality and oneness, the way water appears through its many different waves.

śuddhamātmānamāliṅgya nityamantasthayā dhiyāyaḥ sthitastaṃ ka ātmehaṃ bhogā bandhayituṃ kṣamāḥ || 16 ||

One who always holds on to the pure self with a mind turned inward, what pleasures could ever bind that self?

kṛtasphāravicārasya manobhogādayo'rayaḥmanāgapi na bhindanti śailaṃ mandānilā iva || 17 ||

For one who has looked deeply and widely, enemies like the mind and its pleasures cannot pierce him even a little, just as gentle winds cannot break a mountain.

avicāriṇamajñānaṃ mūḍhamāśāparāyaṇamnigirantīha duḥkhāni bakā matsyamivājalam || 18 ||

Sorrows swallow the person who does not reflect, who is ignorant, foolish, and lives on hope alone, just as herons swallow a fish left stranded without water.

jagadātmaiva sakalamavidyā nāsti kutracititi dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya samyagrūpaḥ sthiro bhava || 19 ||

The whole world, entirely, is the self alone; ignorance exists nowhere. Hold firmly to this view, and stand steady in your true form.

nānātvamasti kalanāsu na vastuto'ntarnānāvidhāsu sarasīṣu jalādi nānyatityekaniścayamayaḥ puruṣo vimukta ityucyate samavalokitasamyagarthaḥ || 20 ||

Difference exists only in how things are perceived, not in reality, at their core, just as in many different lakes the water is nothing but the same water. The person whose mind rests in this one certainty, who has clearly seen the true meaning, is called free.
