nāhaṃ merurna me merurjagannāhaṃ na me jagatnāhaṃ śailā na me śailā dharā nāhaṃ na me dharā || 3 ||
I am not Mount Meru, nor is Meru mine. I am not the world, nor is the world mine. I am not the mountains, nor are the mountains mine. I am not the earth, nor is the earth mine.
patākāvanapaṅktyāḍhyā bhṛtyopavanasaṃkulāgajāśvasāmantayutā purī nāhaṃ na me purī || 6 ||
The city, rich with rows of flag-decked groves, crowded with servants and gardens, furnished with elephants, horses and vassal chiefs, I am not that city, and the city is not mine.
vyarthasaṃketasaṃbandhaṃ saṃketavigame kṣatambhogavṛndaṃ kalatraṃ ca nāhaṃ naitanmamākhilam || 7 ||
The whole mass of pleasures and the wife, their bond is only an empty naming, broken the moment that naming ends. I am not these, and none of this is mine.
evaṃ sabhṛtyaṃ sabalaṃ savāhanapurāntaramnāhaṃ rājyaṃ na me rājyaṃ saṃketo hyayamākulaḥ || 8 ||
So the kingdom, with its servants, its army, its mounts and its cities, I am not the kingdom, and the kingdom is not mine. This too is only a confused naming.
karmendriyāṇi naivāhaṃ na ca karmendriyāṇi mejaḍaṃ yatkila dehe'smiṃstadahaṃ naiva cetanaḥ || 12 ||
I am surely not the organs of action, and the organs of action are not mine. Whatever is lifeless in this body, that I, the conscious one, am certainly not.
nāhaṃ bhogā na me bhogā na me buddhīndriyāṇi cajaḍānyasatsvarūpāṇi na ca buddhīndriyāṇyaham || 13 ||
I am not the pleasures I enjoy, and they are not mine. The organs of perception are not mine either, they are lifeless, with no true being of their own, and I am not the organs of perception.
mūlaṃ saṃsṛtidoṣasya mano nāhaṃ jaḍaṃ hi tatatha buddhirahaṃkāra iti dṛṣṭirmanomayī || 14 ||
The mind is the root of all the trouble of worldly life. I am not the mind, it too is lifeless. So too are the intellect and the sense of I. This whole way of seeing things is made only of mind.
This whole chain, from mind, intellect and the senses, down to this moving body made of the elements, I am not this body and the rest. I look at what remains beyond it.
What remains, then, is the conscious living self. But if this self is conscious only through some object it knows, and is lit up by something other than itself, then it is not yet the true form of the real Self.
So I give up the object known, the perceivable, for I am surely not that. What remains, free of all thought and division, is pure consciousness alone, standing as I.
How wondrous, this is what I am: one who has found the Self, born in time, engaged in action, yet this very I is the infinite Self. This supreme Self has no end.
That same glorious Self dwells in Brahma, in Indra, in Yama, in Vayu, and likewise in every multitude of beings, abiding in them the way a thread runs through pearls.
This same pure power of awareness has no sickness of being just an object to know. It fills every corner of every direction, and it carries a form that is vast and fearsome.
This same power is present in every kind of being; it is subtle, and it is free from both existing and not existing. It stands inside everything, all the way up to the world of Brahma, and it is the box that holds every power within it.
It is beautiful with every kind of beauty; it is the lamp that lights up everything that appears. Among all who are freed from the round of rebirth, it is the thread stretched through them.
It is rich with the changes of every form, yet it is free of every form. It has become the whole flood of every being, and at all times it has become everything.
This same power holds the beings of fourteen kinds inside the belly of the world. This whole waking world, made from that same power, is nothing but feeling.
mithyāvabhāsamātraṃ tu sukhaduḥkhadaśāgatiḥ | nānākāramayābhāsaḥ sarvamātmaiva citparā || 25 ||
The coming of states of pleasure and pain is nothing but a false appearance. This appearance, made of many forms, is nothing else at all; everything is only the Self, the highest consciousness.
This same Self of mine pervades everything; this same thing is what we call awareness. This same one, wearing the glow of a body, creates the illusion of a king.
This dance, woven out of the net of the world, is spread out by dancers that are only the mind. It is seen by this one single awareness alone, the way something is seen by the light of a lamp.
kaṣṭaṃ mudhai va me cintā nigrahānugrahasthitau | babhūva dehanisthteha na kiṃcidapi dehakam || 30 ||
How painful; my worry about being punished and being favored was useless. It was fixed on this body, but here there is no such body at all, in truth.
Everything that is seen here, whatever in this world appears, is seen as only a small piece of the still, unmoving part of consciousness. Nothing else at all is everlasting.
kva tau kīdṛgvidhau vāpi kiṃniṣṭhau vā kimātmakau | nigrahānugrahau loke harṣāmarṣakramau tathā || 33 ||
Where are they, what are they like, what do they rest on, what are they really; this punishment and this favor in the world, and this joy and this anger too?
What is pleasure, and what is pain? All this is Brahman, spread through everything. I was a fool for no reason; and by good fortune, I remain a fool, just as I am.
Something like this, merely called this, shines in the sky of consciousness. Salutations, salutations to you, who are beyond all essence; by good fortune, I have seen you, O beautiful one.
Oh, indeed I am fully awake; I have understood everything rightly and completely. Salutation to myself, the infinite one, and to this rising of true knowledge.
All coloring and all desire are gone from me; I hold on to no object at all. I am free from the confusion of this world, for even the coloring of that confusion has left me. I have reached a stillness as steady as deep, dreamless sleep, and now I live, calm and unchanging, in the Self.
