It is the home of Shiva, who wears the moon on his head — as dear to him as the Ocean of Milk is to Vishnu, as heaven is to the king of gods, as the lotus of the navel is to the lotus-born Brahma.
saṃcaranśaṃkaro dikṣu bhṛguṣvindumaṇidravaiḥnivartante pravartante yatrājasraṃ ca nirjharāḥ || 7 ||
There Shankara wanders over the cliffs in every direction, amid streams flowing from moonstones, and there the waterfalls endlessly stop and start again.
yo latāvṛkṣagulmaughavāpīhṛdanadīnadaiḥ | mṛgairmṛgagaṇairbhūtairbrahmāṇḍavadivāvṛtaḥ || 8 ||
Covered with creepers, trees, shrubs, torrents, pools, lakes, rivers and streams, with deer, herds of deer, and living creatures, it looks as if it were wrapped around like the whole universe itself.
Named Suraghu, he was mighty, a destroyer of the pride of the gods' terrible enemies, like the sun in his valor, like the wind-god given a body.
jito vai rājyavibhavairdhanairguhyakanāyakaḥ | śatakratugururbodhaiḥ kāvyairasuradeśikaḥ || 13 ||
In the wealth and splendor of his kingdom, he outdid Kubera, the lord of the Guhyakas; in wisdom he outdid Brihaspati, the teacher of Indra; in eloquence he outdid Shukra, the teacher of the demons.
Alas, how hard this is — this man must be punished, and yet he is one I must always protect. Luckily, today I am happy; and yet, today I am also in pain.
So the king's mind swung back and forth and found no rest, whirling in one spot like a creature, long thirsty, caught spinning in a great whirlpool of water.
Worries born from my own acts of punishment and favor, worries that live in the persons of my servants, tear at me badly, the way a lion's claws tear at an elephant.
tadyathā samatodeti sūryāṃśuriva sarvadā | matau mama mune nānyā tathā karuṇayā kuru || 28 ||
So do this with compassion, sage: make an evenness rise in my mind always, the way the sun's rays rise evenly. I have no other way.
For you, once you have fully understood your true nature through this inquiry, moods of joy and anger will no longer shake your mind, it will stay unmoved.
Once the mind casts off its darkness, it will come to a peace free of fever, becoming, for you, only a shape it once had, the way a wave is only a shape water once took.
anukampyā bhaviṣyanti śrīmantaḥ sarva eva te | dṛṣṭatattvasya tuṣṭasya janāḥ piturivāvanau || 36 ||
Once you have seen the truth and are content, even all these prosperous people will become fit for your compassion, and people will look to you as they would to a father on earth.
With the lamp of discernment showing you your true self, you will rise above even Mount Meru, the ocean, and the sky, king, reaching a greatness that grants the highest good.
mahattāmāgate cetastava saṃsāravṛttiṣu | na nimajjati he sādho goṣpadeṣviva vāraṇaḥ || 38 ||
Once your mind reaches this greatness, good man, it will no longer sink into the affairs of worldly life, just as an elephant does not sink in a puddle the size of a cow's hoof-print.
Because of your mind's own clinging desires, you sink into the mud like a worm, through this pitiful weakness of yours that clings only to what can be seen.
Everyone, using an understanding that embraces everything, gives up all things completely, everywhere, always, in every way, and so finds the Self through the self alone.
yāvadanyaṃ na saṃtyaktaṃ tāvatsāmānyameva hi | vastu nāsādyate sādho svātmalābhe tu kā kathā || 45 ||
As long as you have not given up other things, good man, you cannot even get hold of an ordinary object, so what is there to say about attaining your own Self!
When you strive with your whole being, entirely on your own, only for reaching the Self, having given up every other task, you attain exactly that, king, nothing else.
Cast fully aside this expansion of the mind, made up of the whole chain of causes and effects tied to worldly things, and then let go even of your own bodily form. Whatever you reach after that, that alone is the Absolute.
