15.51.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | paridīrghāsu tanvīṣu sutīkṣṇāsu sitāsu ca | kṣuradhāropamānāsu cittavṛttiṣu tiṣṭha mā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Do not dwell in thoughts that are long, thin, very sharp and bright, like the edge of a razor.

kālena mahatā kṣetre jāteyaṃ buddhivallarī | vṛddhiṃ vivekasekena naya tāṃ nayakovida || 2 ||

This creeper of understanding has grown, over a long time, in this field. Water it with discernment and make it grow taller, you who know the right way.

yāvanmlāyati no kāyalatikā kālabhāsvatā | bhūtale'patitāṃ tāvadenāmuddhṛtya dhāraya || 3 ||

Before the sun of time withers this creeper that is your body, before it falls to the ground, lift it up and hold it.

45.51.4

madvākyārthaiakatattvajña madvākyārthaiakabhāvanāt | sukhamāpnoṣi sarpāriryathābhraravabhāvanāt || 4 ||

You know the one truth that is the meaning of my words. By dwelling only on the meaning of my words, you will find happiness, just as the peacock, the killer of snakes, finds joy at the sound of thunder.

uddālakavadālūnaṃ viśīrṇaṃ bhūtapañcakam | kṛtvā kṛtvā dhiyā dhīradhīrayāntarvicāraya || 5 ||

Cut apart and scatter the five elements again and again with your mind, as Uddalaka did, and quietly look within, calmly and steadily.

śrīrāma uvāca | kena krameṇa bhagavanmuninoddālakena tat | bhūtapañcakamālūnaṃ kṛtvāntaḥ pravicāritam || 6 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, by what method did the sage Uddalaka cut apart the five elements and look at them closely within himself?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | śṛṇu rāma yathāpūrvaṃ bhūtavṛndavicāraṇāt | uddālakena saṃprāptā paramā dṛṣṭirakṣatā || 7 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Listen, Rama, to how, long ago, Uddalaka gained the highest, unbroken insight by examining the collection of elements.

jagajjīrṇagṛhasyāsya koṇe kasmiṃścidātate | bhūmeraniladignāmni bhūbhṛdbhāṇḍasamākule || 8 ||

In a certain broad corner of this old house that is the world lies a region of the earth called the direction of the wind, crowded with many mountains.

gandhamādanaśailendranāmni kācitkila sthalī | vidyate kīrṇakusumā drumakarpūrakesarā || 9 ||

There is indeed a place named Gandhamadana, the king of mountains. It is covered with flowers, and its camphor trees are full of fragrant blossoms.

105.51.10

vicitravarṇavihagā nānāvallīvilāsinī | vanecaravyāptataṭī puṣpakesarabhāsinī || 10 ||

It has birds of many colours, and is lovely with all kinds of vines. Wild forest creatures fill its slopes, and it shines with the pollen of flowers.

kvacitsphītamahāratnā kvacillolāmbujotpalā | kvacinnīhārakabarī sarasīdarpaṇā kvacit || 11 ||

In one part it is rich with great jewels, in another its lotuses and blue lotuses sway in the water, in another it is streaked with mist, and in another its lakes are like mirrors.

tatra kasmiṃścidudite sānau saralapādape | āgulphākīrṇakusume snigdhachChāyamahādrume || 12 ||

There, on a certain hill, stood a great tree with cool, thick shade. Pine trees covered the hill, and flowers lay heaped up to the ankle.

uddālako nāma munirmauṇī mānī mahāmatiḥ | aprāptayauvanaḥ pūrvamuvāsodddāmatāpasaḥ || 13 ||

A sage named Uddalaka lived there. He was silent, dignified, and of great wisdom. In earlier days, before he had come of age, he practiced fierce austerities.

prathamaṃ tu babhūvāsāvalpaprajño vicāravān | aprāptapadaviśrāntiraprabuddhaḥ śubhāśayaḥ || 14 ||

At first he had little understanding, though he was thoughtful. He had not yet found the resting place of truth, and had not yet awakened, but his heart was good.

tataḥ krameṇa tapasā śāstrārthaniyamaiḥ kramaiḥ | viveka ājagāmainaṃ navarturiva bhūtalam || 15 ||

Then, step by step, through austerity and through following the rules and meaning of the scriptures, discernment came to him, the way a new season comes to the earth.

athemaṃ cintayāmāsa saṃsārāmayabhīrudhīḥ | ekānta eva nivasankadācitkāntamānasaḥ || 16 ||

Then one day, living alone, his mind afraid of the sickness that is worldly life, his heart serene, he began to think:

kiṃ tatprāpyaṃ pradhānaṃ syādyadvicrāntau na śocyate | yatprāpya janmanā bhūyaḥ saṃbandho nopajāyate || 17 ||

What is that one great thing to gain, which once found leaves nothing to grieve over, which once gained means no more connection with being born again?

kadāhaṃ tyaktamanane pade parmapāvane | ciraṃ viśrāntimeṣyāmi meruśrṛṅga ivāmbudaḥ || 18 ||

When will I reach that supremely pure state, beyond all thinking, and rest there for a long time, like a cloud resting on the peak of Mount Meru?

kadā śamamupaiṣyanti mamāntarbhogasaṃvidaḥ | ālolakallolaravā ūrmayo'mbunidhāviva || 19 ||

When will the feelings and thoughts stirring inside me become calm, the way restless, roaring waves grow still in the ocean?

idaṃ kṛtvedamapyanyatkartavyamiti kalpanām | kadāntarvihasiṣyāmi padaviśrāntayā dhiyā || 20 ||

When will I, with a mind that has come to rest, laugh inside at this endless idea that says: having done this, there is still that other thing to do?

kadā vikalpajālaṃ me na lagiṣyati cetasi | sthitamapyujjhitāsaṅgaṃ payaḥ padmadale yathā || 21 ||

When will the tangle of restless thoughts stop clinging to my mind, staying near it, yet not sticking, the way water sits on a lotus leaf without wetting it?

kadā bahulakallolāṃ nāvā paramayā dhiyā | paritīrṇo bhaviṣyāmi mattāṃ tṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇīm || 22 ||

When, in the boat of the highest wisdom, will I cross over the wild river of craving, with all its many waves?

kademāṃ jāgatairbhūtaiḥ kriyamāṇāmasanmayīm | kriyāmapahasiṣyāmi bālalīlāmivākulām || 23 ||

When will I laugh at all this activity done by worldly beings, unreal in its nature, as confused as a child's game?

kadā vikalpaparyastaṃ mano dolāvadolanam | śamameṣyati me śāntavātaujas iva bhramaḥ || 24 ||

When will my mind, swinging back and forth like a swing, tossed by one notion after another, become still, the way a whirling eddy stills when the force of the wind dies down?

kadoditavapurbhāsā vihasañjāgatīrgatīḥ | antaḥ saṃtoṣameṣyāmi virāḍātmeve pūrṇadhīḥ || 25 ||

When will I laugh at the ways of the world, my true light risen within me, and find contentment inside myself, my mind whole and full, like Virat, the cosmic being?

antaḥ samasamākāraḥ saumyaḥ sarvārthanispṛhaḥ | kadopaśamameṣyāmi manthamuktāmṛtābdhivat || 26 ||

When, calm within, gentle, wanting nothing at all, will I come to perfect peace, like the ocean of nectar once the churning has stopped?

275.51.27

kademāmacalāṃ dṛśyaśriyamāśāśatātmikām | sarvāṃ suṣuptavatpaśyanbhaviṣyāmyantarātatḥ || 27 ||

When will I see this whole unmoving glory of the visible world, made of a hundred hopes, as if it were nothing but a deep sleep, and come to be spread out within, everywhere?

sabāhyābhyantaraṃ sarva śāntakalpanayā dhiyā | paśyaṃścinmātramakhilaṃ bhāvayiṣyāmyahaṃ kadā || 28 ||

When will I see everything, outside and inside, with a mind whose thinking has gone completely still, and feel all of it as nothing but pure consciousness?

kadopaśāntacittātmā cittāmupagataḥ parām | paramālokameṣyāmi jātyandhavigamādiva || 29 ||

When, my mind and self grown calm, having reached that highest state, will I come to the supreme light - as someone born blind comes to sight when the blindness finally goes?

kadābhyāsopalabhyena citprakāśena cāruṇā | dūrādālokayiṣyāmi tanvīṃ kālakalāmimām || 30 ||

When, by the beautiful light of consciousness that practice alone brings, will I see, from far away, this slender sliver of time?

kadāśākauśikīkīrṇā jāḍyajīrṇahṛdambujā | kṣayameṣyati kṛṣṇeyaṃ kadā me doṣayāminī || 32 ||

When will this dark night of my faults come to an end - the night filled with owls of desire, that has withered the lotus of my heart with dullness?

īhitānīhitairmukto heyaopādeyavarjitaḥ | kadāntastoṣameṣyāmi svaprakāśapade sthitaḥ || 33 ||

When, free from wanting things and not wanting things, done with what to take and what to leave, standing in the place of my own self-shining light, will I feel content within?

kadā me mānamātaṅgaḥ svābhimānamahāmadaḥ | sattvāvabodhahariṇā hato nāśamupaiṣyati || 34 ||

When will the elephant of my pride, drunk with the great intoxication of self-conceit, be struck down by the lion of true understanding, and go to its end?

niraṃśadhyānaviśrānter mūkasya mama mūrdhani | kadā tārṇaṃ kariṣyanti kulāyaṃ vanaghūrṇikāḥ || 35 ||

When will forest birds build a nest of grass on my head, since I sit silent, resting in meditation that never breaks?

kadā niḥśaṅkamurasi dhyānadhīradhiyaḥ khagāḥ | mama viśrāntimeṣyanti śailasthāṇvacalasthiteḥ || 36 ||

When will birds, without any fear, come to rest on my chest, since I sit unmoving like a mountain or a tree-stump, my mind steady in meditation?

tṛṣṇākarañjajaṭilāṃ janmajarjaragulmikām | saṃsārāraṇyasarasīṃ tyaktvā yāsyāmyahaṃ kadā || 37 ||

When will I leave this pool in the forest of the world - choked with the thorny trees of craving, its bushes worn out by birth after birth - and go on?

iti cintāparavaśo vana uddālako dvijaḥ | punaḥ punastūpaviśandhyānābhyāsaṃ cakāra ha || 38 ||

Thinking these thoughts, Uddalaka the brahmin, overcome by worry, sat down again and again in the forest and practiced meditation.

But since his mind, restless as a monkey, was carried away by the objects of the senses, he did not find the joy-giving steadiness of concentration.

kadācibāhyasaṃsparśaparityāgādanantaram | tasyāgacchacittakapiḥ prodvegaṃ sattvasaṃsthitau || 40 ||

Sometimes, right after he had let go of contact with things outside, the monkey of his mind would grow restless even while resting in that calm state.

kadācidaāntarān sparśānparityajya manaḥkapiḥ | lolatvāttasya saṃyāto viṣayaṃ viṣadagdhavat || 41 ||

Sometimes, letting go of inner touches too, the monkey of his mind, out of its own restlessness, ran to the objects of the senses - like someone burned by poison.

kadāciduditārkābhaṃ tejo dṛṣṭvāntare manaḥ | viṣayonmukhatāṃ yātaṃ tasya tāmarasekṣaṇa || 42 ||

Sometimes, O lotus-eyed one, after seeing within a light like the rising sun, his mind would still turn again toward the senses.

āntarāndhyatamastyāgaṃ kṛtvā viṣayalampaṭam | tasyoḍḍīya mano yāti kadācitttrastapakṣivat || 43 ||

Sometimes, having cast off the inner darkness of blindness, his mind, greedy for the objects of the senses, would fly off - like a frightened bird.

bāhyānābhyantarānsparśāṃstyaktvā nidrāṃ ca tanmanaḥ | tamastejonantike lebhe kadāciścchāśvatīṃ sthitim || 44 ||

Sometimes, having given up contact with things outside and inside, and sleep as well, that mind of his would find a lasting stillness there, between darkness and light.

iti paryākulasyaantḥ sa khalu dhyānavṛttiṣu | darīṣvanvahamugrāsu vātamagna iva drumḥ || 45 ||

Caught up in confusion like this, he stayed on in the movements of meditation, day after day, in the harsh mountain caves - like a tree caught in a storm wind.

atiṣṭhaddhyānasaṃrūḍhamananaḥ saṃkaṭe yathā | dolāyitavapustucchatṛṣṇātīrataraṅgakaiḥ || 46 ||

He stayed there, his thinking fixed deep in meditation as if hemmed in, his body swaying under the small waves on the shore of his own petty craving.

atha paryākulamanā vijahāra munirgirau | pratyahaṃ divasādhīśo mahāmerāvivaikakaḥ || 47 ||

Then, his mind troubled, the sage wandered on the mountain day after day, alone - like the sun, the lord of the day, alone on the great mountain Meru.

samastabhūtaduṣprāpāmekadā prāpa kandarām | saṃśāntasarvasaṃcārāṃ munirmokṣadaśāmiva || 48 ||

One day the sage reached a mountain cave that no creature at all could reach - a cave where all movement had gone completely still, like the state of liberation itself.

aparyākulitāṃ vātairaprāptamṛgapakṣiṇīm | adṛṣṭāṃ devagandharvaiḥ paramākāśaśobhanām || 49 ||

That cave was undisturbed by winds, unreached by any deer or bird, unseen even by gods or gandharvas, and beautiful with the high open sky above it.

puṣpaprakarasaṃchannāṃ mṛduśādvalakomalām | jyotīrasāśmasaṃprotairmarakatairiva || 50 ||

It was covered over with heaps of flowers, soft with tender grass, looking as if it were built out of emeralds set with glowing gems.

susnigdhaśītalacchāyāṃ prakaṭāṃ ratnadīpakaiḥ | suguptāṃ vanadevīnāmantaḥpurakuṭīmiva || 51 ||

Its shade was cool and gentle, lit up by jewels that shone like lamps, and it was as well hidden as the private inner chamber of forest goddesses.

kulambanāhimālokāṃ nātyuṣṇāṃ nātiśītalām | śāradasyoditārkasya hemagauraṃ prabhāmiva || 52 ||

It was like a bank of water that never turned to ice, neither too hot nor too cold, like the pale golden light of the autumn sun just after it has risen.

bālālokaparimlānāṃ komalāśabdamārutām | mañjarījaṭilopetāṃ bālāṃ mālāvatīmiva || 53 ||

It was gently dimmed by the young morning light, its breeze soft and hushed, covered with tangled clusters of blossoms - like a young girl wearing a garland.

upaśamapadavīmivānurūpāṃ kamalajaviśramaṇāya yogyarūpām | kusumanikarakomalābhirāmāṃ sarasijakoṭarakomalāṃ samantāt || 54 ||

It fit, like the very path to peace; it was shaped just right for Brahma, the lotus-born, to rest in; it was lovely and soft with heaps of flowers, soft all around like the inside of a lotus.
