15.27.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | surāsurasabhājyeṣṭhe tasminbhṛgusute gate | manasā cintayāmāsa balirbuddhimatāṃ varaḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: in that great assembly of gods and demons, when the son of Bhrigu had gone away, Bali, the best of the wise, reflected in his mind.

yuktamuktaṃ bhagavatā cidevedaṃ jagattrayam | cidahaṃ cidime lokāścidāśāścidiyam kriyā || 2 ||

What the venerable one said is right: these three worlds are nothing but consciousness. I am consciousness, these worlds are consciousness, the directions are consciousness, this very action is consciousness.

sabāhyābhyantaraṃ sarvaṃ cideva paramārthatḥ | asti cidvyatirekeṇa neha kiñcana kutracit || 3 ||

In ultimate truth, everything, both outside and inside, is consciousness alone. Apart from consciousness, nothing exists anywhere at all.

This is the sun—but if consciousness did not perceive that sun, what difference would there be between the sun and darkness?

iyaṃ bhūriti bhūreṣā citā yadi na cetayate | bhūmeḥ kiṃ nāma bhūmitvaṃ tadbhavaye bhavatāṃ gatam || 5 ||

This is the earth—but if consciousness did not perceive this earth, what would its earthness be? It would remain a mere possibility, never becoming real.

imā diśo diśa iti cetyan te na citā yadi | tatkiṃ nāma diśāṃ diktvaṃ śailānāṃ cāpi kādritā || 6 ||

These are the directions—but if consciousness did not perceive the directions, would they still be directions? Would the mountains still be mountains?

idaṃ jagajjagaditi citā yadi na cetya te | tatkiṃ jagattvaṃ jagato nabhastvaṃ nabhaso'tha kim || 7 ||

This is the world—but if consciousness did not perceive it, would the world still be the world? Would the sky still be the sky?

This body, huge as a mountain—if consciousness did not perceive it, would an embodied being's body still be a body?

95.27.9

cindriyāṇi citkāyaścinmanaścittadeṣaṇā | cidantaścidbahiścitkhaṃ cidbhāvāścidbhavasthitiḥ || 9 ||

The senses are consciousness, the body is consciousness, the mind is consciousness, its longing is consciousness. Consciousness is inside, consciousness is outside, consciousness is space, consciousness is every existing thing, consciousness is the state of being.

citai vainamahaṃ sarvaṃ sparśanaiṣaṇapūrvakam | karomi mātrāsaṃsparśaṃ śarīreṇa na kiṃcana || 10 ||

By consciousness alone I do everything, starting from the wish to touch; through the body I make only the slightest contact, I do nothing at all by means of the body.

kimanena śarīreṇa kāṣṭhaloṣṭasamen me | aśeṣajagadekātmā cidahaṃ cetanātmakaḥ || 11 ||

What use is this body of mine—it is just like a piece of wood or a lump of clay. I am consciousness, the one self of the whole world, made of pure awareness.

ahaṃ cidambare bhānāvahaṃ cidbhūtapañjare | surāsureṣu cidahaṃ sthāvareṣu careṣu ca || 12 ||

I am consciousness in the sky, I am consciousness in the sun. I am consciousness in this cage of the elements. I am consciousness in gods and demons, in things that stand still and in things that move.

cidastīha dvitīyā hi kalpanaiava na vidyate | dvitvasyāsaṃbhavālloke kaḥ śatruḥ kaśca vā suhṛt || 13 ||

Here consciousness alone truly exists; a second thing is not even a real idea. Since there is no such thing as two, who in this world could be an enemy, and who a friend?

balināmnaḥ śarīrasya cchinne śirasi bhāsure | citaḥ kiṃ tadbhavecchinnaṃ sarvalokāvapūraṇāt || 14 ||

If the shining head of this body named Bali were cut off, would consciousness itself be cut—when it fills every world completely?

citā saṃcetito dveṣo dveṣo bhavati nānyathā | tasmāddveṣādayaḥ sarve bhāvābhāvāścidātmakāḥ || 15 ||

Hatred becomes hatred only when consciousness perceives it as such, not otherwise. So hatred and everything else, all things that exist and all that do not, are nothing but consciousness.

na cito vyatirekeṇa pravicāryāpi kiṃcana | āsādyate kila sphārādasmāttribhuvanodarāt || 16 ||

Even after the closest examination, indeed nothing at all is found apart from consciousness, anywhere in this vast expanse that is the inside of the three worlds.

na dveṣo'sti na rāgo'sti na mano nāsya vṛttayaḥ | cinmātrasyātiśuddhasya vikalpakalanā kutaḥ || 17 ||

There is no hatred, there is no attachment, there is no mind, and no workings of the mind. For consciousness alone, utterly pure, how could there be any making of distinctions?

cidahaṃ sarvago vyāpī nityānandamayātmakaḥ | vikalpakalanātīto dvitīyāṃśavivarjitaḥ || 18 ||

I am consciousness, present everywhere, all-pervading, made of everlasting bliss. I am beyond every distinction, without a trace of anything second to me.

citaścidiyannāma nirnāmāyā na nāma tat | śabdātmikaiṣā cicchaktiḥ parisphurati sarvagā || 19 ||

The name we give it, consciousness, is not its true name, for it has no name at all. Yet this power of consciousness, which takes the form of words, shines forth everywhere.

dṛśyadarśananirmuktakevalāmalarūpavān | nityodito nirābhāso draṣṭāsmi parameśvaraḥ || 20 ||

My form is pure and stainless alone, free from both the seen and the act of seeing. Ever shining, without any reflected image, I am the seer, the highest lord.

215.27.21

kalpanāvikalākāraḥ kālakāntakalāmayaḥ | ābhāsamātramudito nityābhāsavivarjitaḥ || 21 ||

My form leaves no room for imagination; I am made of the very phases that bring time to its end. I arise only as an appearance, yet I am free from any lasting appearance.

bhārūpaikasvarūpe'smin svarūpeṇa jayāmyaham | cetyarañjanariktāya vimuktāya mahātmane || 22 ||

I stand victorious, in my own true nature, within this single form that is pure light -- I, the great self, free of every trace of the knowable, wholly liberated.

pratyakcetanarūpāya svarūpāya namo'stu te | citaye cetynamuktāya yuktyā yuktāya yogyayā || 23 ||

Salutations to you, whose true form is consciousness turned inward, whose nature is your own true self. Salutations to that consciousness, free from anything known as an object, established through fitting reason.

sarvāvabhāsadīpāya mahyameva namo'stu te | cetyanirmuktacidrūpaṃ viṣvagviśvāvapūrakam || 24 ||

Salutations to you, the lamp that lights up every appearance -- to you, who are none other than myself. You are consciousness free from anything known as an object, filling this whole universe on every side.

saṃśāntasarvasaṃvedyaṃ saccinmātramahaṃ mahat | ākāśavadananto'hamapyaṇoraṇurātataḥ || 25 ||

I am the great reality in which everything knowable has fully come to rest -- pure being and consciousness alone. Like space, I am without end; yet I am also smaller than the smallest, while spreading through everything.

nāsādayanti māmetāḥ sukhaduḥkhadaśā dṛśaḥ| saṃvedanamasavedyamacetyaṃ cetanaṃ tatam || 26 ||

These states of pleasure and pain that come with seeing do not touch me. I am awareness itself -- never an object to be known, never a thing to be thought of, yet conscious, and spread through everything.

na śaktā māṃ paricchettuṃ bhāvābhāvā jagadgatāḥ| atha caite jagadbhāvāḥ paricchindantu māmimam || 27 ||

The states of existence and non-existence found in the world cannot limit me. Then let these worldly states limit this very self.

yathābhimatamevaite mattona vyatirekiṇaḥ| yadi svabhāvabhūtena vastunā vastu nīyate || 28 ||

However one may imagine them, these are not separate from me -- even supposing one real thing could be produced by another thing that exists in its own right.

hriyate dīyate vāpi tatkiṃ kasya kila kṣatam| sarvadā sarvamevāhaṃ sarvakṛtsarvasaṃgataḥ || 29 ||

Whether such a thing is taken away or given, what indeed is lost, and to whom? I am, always, everything itself -- the doer of all, joined with all.

cetyamasmyahamevaitannakiṃcidapi coditam| kiṃ saṃkalpavikalpābhyāṃ citaṃ cidiyamekikā || 30 ||

I myself am the very thing to be known; this world is nothing that has come about apart from me. So what use are the mind's yes and no, its resolve and doubt? Once known, this consciousness stands alone, without a second.

saṃkṣobhayāmyahaṃ tāvacchāmyāmyātmani pāvane | iti saṃcintayanneva baliḥ paramakovidaḥ || 31 ||

I stir myself into activity, yet I remain at peace within this purifying self. Thinking in this way, Bali, the wisest of the wise,

325.27.32

oṃkārādardhamātrārthaṃ bhāvayanmaunamāsthitaḥ | saṃśāntasarvasaṃkalpaḥ praśāntakalanāgaṇaḥ || 32 ||

He meditated on the meaning of the half-measure of the sound Om, and settled into silence. Every intention in his mind had come to rest; the whole working of his thoughts had grown calm.

niḥśaṅkamapi dūrāstacetyacintakacintanaḥ | dhyātṛdhyeyadhyānahīno nirmalaḥ śāntavāsanaḥ || 33 ||

Without any doubt, even the very thought of a thinker directed at some object had faded far off, like the sun going down. He was free of the meditator, the object meditated on, and the act of meditating itself -- pure, with every inner tendency now calmed,

babhūvāvātadīpābho baliḥ prāptamahāpadaḥ | upaśāntamanāstatra ratnavātāyane baliḥ | avasadbahukālaṃ sa samutkīrṇa ivopale || 34 ||

Bali, who had fallen into a great disaster, became still like a lamp's flame in a windless place. His mind now fully at peace, Bali stayed there at a jewelled window, remaining for a long time like a figure carved into stone.

praśamitaiṣaṇayā paripūrṇayā mananadoṣadaśojjhitayaitayā | balirarājata nirmalasattayā vighnamacchhatayeva śarannabhaḥ || 35 ||

With his craving now stilled, made whole, having cast off the faulty state of restless thinking, Bali shone with a pure, stainless being -- like the autumn sky, free of clouds, shining through its own clearness.
