śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ye hi rājasasāttvikyā jātā bhuvi mahāguṇāḥ | te nityameva muditāḥ prakāśāḥ kha ivendavaḥ || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: people born on this earth with great qualities, out of a nature that blends energy and clarity, are always joyful and shining, like moons in the sky.
They do not reach for anything beyond their own nature, just as a fixed thing does not move toward anything else. They find their joy in their own good conduct, just as trees are content with only what is their own.
Rama, just as the moon, lovely with nectar, always moves toward becoming full, so one whose nature blends energy and clarity always moves toward freedom.
Even in misfortune they do not lose their nature, just as the moon does not lose its coolness. By their own nature they shine, beautiful with qualities like kindness.
As forest trees are covered by a creeper about to burst into fresh clusters of flowers, the truly good are always equal to everyone, even in temper, and gentle.
Like the ocean, they have a wonderful limit they never cross, and they stay the same in every condition. So, mighty-armed one, misfortune leaves no mark on their state.
That path alone should always be followed, never the path into the ocean of misfortune. In just this way, one free of sorrow should live and act in this world.
Rama, their inner growth keeps increasing, as it does for those who have gone beyond energy and clarity, moving by a way that thought cannot reach, and reflecting again and again on true scripture.
One should quickly see, with one's own mind, in many ways, the plain truth of impermanence, that constant process, present at the start and at the end, which runs through all three worlds.
The wise should quickly see all things as touched by loss, and think of nothing else, giving up wrong seeing and the useless chain of ignorance.
Give up this body, even though it looks solid and lovely, for it does not last. Look instead only at pure consciousness, which has no parts strung together like beads on a thread.
In that one reality, which lasts forever, spreads everywhere, is present in everything, and is at peace, all this is strung together, the way beads are strung on one thread.
The same consciousness that fills the whole world, that shines in an ornament, in the sky, in the sun, and that lives in a hole in the ground, that very consciousness is also inside the belly of an insect.
kumbhavyomnāṃ na bhedo'sti yatheha paramārthatḥ | citau śarīrasaṃsthānāṃ na bhedo'sti tathānagha || 19 ||
Just as, in truth, there is no real difference between the space inside a pot and the space of the sky, so too, sinless one, there is no difference in the consciousness of those who live in different bodies.
All beings differ from one another, some bitter, some sharp, and so on, but since awareness itself is one, how could pure consciousness ever differ from one being to another?
Only one thing always stays the same, pure existence itself. The thought this one was born and this one has died is only an idea in your mind and theirs.
There is really no such thing that comes into being and then dissolves away. Raghava, all this is only appearance, it is neither fully real nor fully unreal.
kiṃ kilāsati rāmeha mohajāle samujjhati | yatkiṃcitsaṅgasaṅgatya vimoha kāraṇaṃ hi tat || 24 ||
Rama, what is there really to hold on to here, in this unreal net of confusion? Whatever it is that we cling to through attachment, that alone is the cause of this confusion.
asati jagati kiṃ kileha modaḥ sati ca kimanga vimohakāraṇaṃ tat | jananamaraṇasaṃsthitiṣvatastvaṃ bhava khamivātisamaḥ sadopaśāntaḥ || 25 ||
If this world does not really exist, what joy is there in it? And if it does exist, dear one, what use is there in being confused about it? So, through birth, death, and every state in between, be like the sky, completely even, always at peace.
